R.B.I. Baseball 19 is probably never going to match the polish of one of PlayStation’s flagship franchises. But, for the first time ever, it’s solid enough that baseball fans who just have an Xbox or a Switch don’t have to feel totally left out for yet another year. It may not be the greatest game ever, but neither is it anywhere close to being the worst — and seeing as some of its predecessors actually have a legitimate claim at that worst title, R.B.I. Baseball 19 represents an enjoyable and welcome step forward.

The problems with the series have reached legacy status, and although it’s clear Major League Baseball tried to make a better game, the efforts were not enough. The focus should be shoring up the gameplay first and foremost, not making sure some of the star players shake the bat the right way. For six years we’ve been saying “maybe this is the year,” and the result is once again “maybe next year.”

If you really want the real players and ballparks, just know that while there are some fun moments, R.B.I. Baseball 19 will likely leave you frustrated and wondering when a good licensed baseball game will finally arrive on the Xbox One.

Comparing it to other baseball games on the market is silly, because it's an ARCADE game, not a simulation, though the team at MLBPA has obviously tried to really step it up the past two years.

There are some bugs, but overall, it's a really fun game, and we get weekly roster updates, every Friday during the season!

When you combine that with the awkward controls you just end up asking yourself what went wrong here? The A.I. doesn’t help matters either as it feels cheap. The R.B.I. Baseball series has delivered a number of disappointing games during its existence, but despite this I still have fond memories of the original retro RBI games and hope they improve in all the areas it needs to improve in (bring us a modern day baseball stars from the NES era). Unfortunately their new release R.B.I. Baseball 19 once again falls short of my expectations, and even though there is some improvements it still just has too much of the enjoyment factor missing on the whole. I will however start off with the slight improvements and these improvements come in the form of a more realistic and immersive presentation which in turn delivers a true MLB experience. The Franchise mode also feels slightly improved as well but you tend to forget about that thanks to the pitching and batting mechanics which are once again not what I was hoping for. Again the A.I. doesn’t help matters either and when you combine these problems with the technical issues, the the fun factor just isn't there like I has hoped for. In terms of content the game doesn’t have really anything new and this doesn't really break anything but something new would have been a nice addition. R.B.I. shines the most when played against another human opponent. Recommending R.B.I. Baseball 19 to you is a difficult proposition because if you aren't a huge fan of the franchise or baseball in general you will likely not get the fun you are looking for. I would love the R.B.I. Baseball series to succeed and bring us back to the glory days, but I can’t see that happening anytime soon because as each year passes the same problems persist, with only minor improvements. Maybe next year we will see a full blown overhaul and a brand new experience for the 2020 rendition. Expand
