All in all, this is another Ratalaika Game, with all the baggage that name carries. The achievements are too easy, but the price is low, and if you are an achievement hunter then picking Radio Squid up is a no-brainer. For the rest of us, it’s better news than usual, as even when the achievements have been rinsed, the charm and personality of the characters on display here does make a good argument for continuing to play.

I do like the Gameboy-style visuals, and the music is somewhat enjoyable to listen to, it’s just that it really isn’t fun or rewarding to play along to. Crowded rooms lead to death after death, and the lack of control over our own shooting only compounds the issue. Another easy 1000G is about the only redeeming feature here, if you care about that sort of thing.

You are a Squid looking for theRadio Squid is an 8bit Room Based Shoot-Em-Up developed by Pixelteriyaki and published by Ratalaika Games. You are a Squid looking for the Sirens Song, and must collect all of the pieces to obtain it. You will move room to room shooting enemies, and collecting the various parts after defeating all of the enemies. Your shots are timed with the beat of the music and ricochet off of walls. This all sounds like a great recipe for a fun shooter, but it ends up being a cacophony of frustration. Once your shots hit a wall they become dangerous to you as well. This would be OK if you controlled the timing of the bullets, but they are tied to the rhythm of the music. This can lend to Lula in you shots, then bursts of bullets when the beat picks up, making dodging the many sprites on the screen from your enemies and yourself nearly impossible. Health is few and far between lending to a difficult that just feels hard, not a fun challenge. This game is simply cramped, if it didn't feel like you were on a Game Boy screen it wouldn't be as bad. If you enjoy brutally difficult games this may be a title for you. Expand
