  • Summary: From the creators of Hurdle Turtle comes this zany, tough-as-nails cartoon 2D Space Shooter with a plucky soundtrack featuring all new tracks by the incorrigible Parry Gripp (Nerf Herder).

Purple Chicken Spaceman is exactly the type of game that you'd expect it to be, if only a bit harder. It's a fun challenge, and the completely unique visual style makes it tough not to admire. Yes, it's mental, but it works.

Purple Chicken Spaceman is a difficult but hilarious ID@XBOX game from Holmade Games. The challenge is to survive all of the levels. The soundtrack will keep you laughing, and the levels keep upping the challenge. It's just great.

Purple Chicken Spaceman is a very hit and miss affair. Whilst it’s quite fun, easy to pick up and understand, and sports a vibrant presentation, it’s far too tempting to throw the controller down in the face of its overbearing difficulty and one horrendously annoying track. Bear with it though, because there’s much satisfaction to pull from success here, it’s just a shame that it takes a great deal of perseverance to get there.

So I got a review code for a game last night and I told myself well I'm going to play this a little bit then get to sleep because I have a lotSo I got a review code for a game last night and I told myself well I'm going to play this a little bit then get to sleep because I have a lot to do in the morning. Well it's officially morning now and I as I type out this review I can honestly say I didn't get to sleep until around 6 this morning. So all the adult things I have to do today will be done at a very slow pace. I just couldn't step away from "Purple Chicken Spaceman" I found myself addicted very quickly. I've always been a fan of bullet hell space shooters or should I say Bullet Heck? You'll have to play the game to gt that joke. I didn't think I'd see one this year I'd enjoy more then "Alien Cruise" which I played a few weeks back. I was really wrong because not only is this a better bullet hell space shooter, it's a really great Indie game overall. I can say without any question my favorite one so far in 2019. People will probably take a second look at my next comment , but I think it's up there with "CupHead" as Indie greatness that brings something fresh, and a challenge. Purple Chicken Spaceman isn't going to hold your hand, more than likely you'll find it kicks your ass. It does it fairly though, the controls are spot on, and you never feel cheated by the game. I found myself enjoying the butt kicking handed to me.
You play as a Purple chicken that finds out on the news Aliens have invaded Earth, and you go on a revenge mission against them. You fight your way through eight unique levels of Ice, Dessert, Space, Heck, and even under water.. Each level has a very unique and really radical boss fight. Cool battles against laser shooting cats and a abominable snowman really make you fall in love with the design of this game. There are plenty more amazing battles I won't spoil for you. Easy to say some of the coolest boss fights I've experienced in many years of gaming. Same can be said for the enemies, and levels as a whole. Really great video game designing here. There are 4 different upgrades you can get on each level Extra Man, Shield, Bomb, and maybe it really isn't a upgrade but a troll item since it is the only one that chases you down instead of you chasing it. A item that switches your controls on you making everything opposite. Up is down, left is right you get it you get it a real pain. Shield covers you from damage for around 15 seconds, Bomb destroys everything, and extra man I don't think I need to explain that. These will pile up if you don't use them so can be a easy mode if your struggling just save them up and use them all to get past a really difficult part. I really appreciate this element, because like I said it can be a pain, and it gives everyone a chance with patience to really enjoy the game to completion.
Another great thing about "Purple chicken Spaceman" is the amazing soundtrack. Parry Gripp from the Alternative band "Nerf Herder" really brings something special to the title as well as the "The Spin Wires" who have been on other great indies like "Super Toy Cars" there is a couple other great artists who have songs on the game, and they are all amazing. The music is so enjoyable, and never gets old no matter how many times you hear it as you struggle on a level. I have to say I'm a fan, and look forward to a physical release. Hoping it has a soundtrack included and a plush purple chicken and poster for my room as well. Without any question my favorite Indie this year, and an example of fresh and interesting video game design. Games like this pick you up when you start to feel video game repetitiveness as a reviewer. It's good to know there are still developers out there working on new and fresh ideas, and making gaming fun again. Thank you Holmade Games and thank you "Purple Chicken Spaceman" you have made a space in the section of my video game heart and mind that I'll cherish and remember forever.

Pros: Unique Level design and enemies
    Really Rad Bosses
    Amazing unforgettable soundtrack
    Addictive never ending fun
    Real Challenge

    Cons: None

Overall 9.8 The best Indie so far in 2019, and the best bullet hell 2D space shooter in this Generation of gaming. Do yourself a favor don't miss out on "Purple Chicken Spaceman".

Purple Chicken Spaceman captured my attention with it's tremendous soundtrack and presentation. The gameplay within Purple Chicken Spaceman is solid as the sound track and most of importantly it's fun as well. The difficulty in regards to the gameplay (as in most shooters) is unforgiving, so if you’re looking for easy gamer score here you're looking in the wrong place. The difficulty of the game is what shines, because as in all shooters its the satisfaction from defeating a difficult challenge. Purple Chicken Spaceman is a shmup and the main objective is to defeat the array of enemies and bosses are imaginative and styled that also flow nicely with the jamming tunes present in the game. Purple Chicken Spaceman doesn’t really suffer from any technical issues but a lack of options and high difficulty will dissappoint a lesser skilled gamer. Purple Chicken Spaceman gets the most important aspects right and if you’re looking for a challenging experience you can definitely do much worse in the genre of shooters. Nice work Holmade Games, looking forward to your next release for Xbox One. Expand
