    The title’s inaccessibility is its biggest problem. However, if you can look past that and come prepared by watching playthroughs or reading guides, Pixel Piracy will keep you hooked for dozens of hours.

    Pixel Piracy is difficult to get into: there is a lot to be learned and lots to remember; namely getting to grips with the vast inventory system and mastering how to keep the crew in check.

    A decent pirate RPG experience with a good amount of things to see and do. The upgrading and management systems are the highlight and core part of the game and kept me entertained for a good amount of time.

    Despite its good ideas, Pixel Piracy ends up being quite disappointing both on the technical level - with huge slowdowns when using too many pirates and building a too big ship - and the gameplay one, with lack of variety and contents.

    Pixel Piracy has a lot of untapped potential, but it's bogged down by shoddy AI and bugs, and a detrimental lack of in-game guidance.

    If you're lucky enough to avoid the bugs, Pixel Piracy will provide a couple of hours of enjoyment while you figure out its intricacies and perfect your crew, though we doubt there's enough variation to keep you hooked beyond your first play through.

The console version of this sandbox side scroller is a bust. 505 games either released a version that is not yet finished, or the game itself is not capable of running on Xbox 1. The core features are there, and they are quite fun. Customize your ship, and crew. Set sail for buried treasures in a unique experience with awesome artwork and euphoric pirate tunes.     The short version is that the game has tons of potential, but is so technically inept that one wonders how it made it through even 20 minutesThe short version is that the game has tons of potential, but is so technically inept that one wonders how it made it through even 20 minutes of testing. I will not get into the positives of the game--which do exist--because I do not want to fool anyone into thinking this may be a good purchase. It is not. The developers had no business releasing it, the publishers had no business publishing it, and Microsoft had no business accepting it. This is completely unprecedented in my 20 years of gaming--an absolute failure at every level. It is for that reason that I give it a 0, despite the promise it shows.

    Not convinced? Here are some examples from my hour or so of playtime:
    * My captain became incapable of attacking, yet my pirate minions ascended to godhood, slicing up every enemy on any ship with divine, telekinetic blades that send anyone/everyone flying into the ocean in a spray of blood.
    * Choosing to commandeer a conquered vessel, when prompted, is actually choosing to starve yourself and your crew to death. You remain free to wander both ships, but the game prevents you from sailing, telling you that you must choose to plunder or commandeer the enemy ship.
    * Periodically, attempting to pay my crew would result in the confirmation prompt refusing to go away. I was free to switch between "Yes" and "No" to my heart's content, but selecting either--or backing out--was not possible. The only solution is to kill the game, restart it, and then load my most recent save.
    * At one point, I was greeted with a black screen that refused to leave. Just endless, endless black. The sound still worked, though!
    * Trying to climb ladders is frustrating, because your captain will randomly decide he would rather jump down. It seems to climb *all the way* up the ladder, you must angle the joystick somewhat diagonally. Straight up will see him climb halfway up, only to jump back down.
    * If you teach your captain any skills like cleaning and such, he will fight your control over him to attend to those tasks. There's nothing quite like starting a battle with enemy pirates, only to have the unstable captain running back and forth trying to decide between supporting his men and removing feces from the deck.

    I probably encountered more than this, and I probably would have encountered even more if I had continued playing. But this is not how I want to spend one of my two precious days off from work, and it certainly was not worth the price tag. I have hope that these problems will eventually get fixed, but this is completely unacceptable at every level. The game is buggier and less playable than any early access title I have ever played, and this is meant to be a full release! Nobody involved in this release should have let it slip through.    … Full Review »
