Pillar’s drawback is that whatever message it’s trying to relay, is completely undermined by its overly basic puzzle design. I commend the developer for creating something unique and somewhat various, but in the face of its sheer simplicity and its vagueness, boredom strikes far sooner than intrigue. The end result makes for a game that seems as though it has a lot to say, but ends up saying very little at all.

I loved the art style they went with in the game because it draws you into the gameplay ever so well and it stays that way at all times. TheI loved the art style they went with in the game because it draws you into the gameplay ever so well and it stays that way at all times. The puzzles in the game always feel rewarding and worthwhile even if some of them can be a little frustrating due to the difficulty. There’s a variety of interesting and unique mechanics in play during your time with the game and each one plays an important part overall. Some may not enjoy the lack of tutorials I actually enjoyed finding out what to do on my own because it made completing puzzles even more rewarding. When played for long periods the game can become quite repetetive and frustrating so it’s best to enjoy this game in short bursts. The gameplay doesn’t have a huge amount of depth to it which can make things become a little tedious every now and then. Sometimes the game’s fun factor dwindles a little bit and this can make the immersiveness dwindle a little bit as well. It’s hard to get excited about a puzzle game nowadays because there’s just so many of them about and that for me has kinda took the shine off the genre. That being said there is still some game’s that catch my eye in this genre every now and then and without a doubt that’s what Pillar did and whilst it may not be the best puzzle game I’ve ever played before it ticks a lot of boxes for me in a number of areas. Obviously the main aspect of a puzzle game is its puzzles and thankfully I’m pleased to say that the puzzles present in this game are creative and fun at the same time. Despite this I would still recommend that you play the game in short bursts though because the gameplay doesn’t have much in terms of depth which does make things become repetetive quite quickly. That being said when you play the game in short bursts you do notice that the game has a variety of interesting and unique mechanics and whilst Pillar has a few shortcomings these mechanics make the game stand out and that means that the game does enough to get a solid recommendation from me.
