Paladin is a poor take on the popular genre it adopts. There’s nowhere near enough innovation to allow this to stand out from the crowd of other twin-stick shooters on the market. The level design is poor, the gameplay is basic, and there’s not much of a challenge to soak up. It may well be a colourful blast with a good selection of upgrades to lean back on, but when you take into account that you can complete this entire game in just 90 minutes, it leaves a lot to be desired.

As far as twin-stick shooters go Paladin is far from being a classic, but it does have some enjoyable moments for you to get to grips with.As far as twin-stick shooters go Paladin is far from being a classic, but it does have some enjoyable moments for you to get to grips with. The main problem I see with this game is that it doesn’t offer enough and I can see it getting lost in the abyss of the many twin-stick shooters that offer you more. It’s not all doom and gloom though because the gameplay on the whole has been done really well. The controls are fluid and responsive throughout and most important of all it’s fun, but I do think the lack of challenge will put some people off. They balance this though by offering a number of difficulty settings, but I still don’t think this will be enough to satisfy the veterans. Something that really impressed me about the game was the upgrades that are on offer. You can upgrade both your ship and the cities you have to protect and the best thing is that each upgrade feels important and you can tell that it improves you, which is great. When it comes to the content in the game there simply is not enough to keep you invested and I think they could have combated that by including a multiplayer option, but unfortunately they don’t have one. The lack of content definitely hurts the game’s replay value and you will find that once you complete the game then you won’t feel the need to return to the game. The presentation side of the game surprised me and I must admit that I didn’t expect it to be that good. Visually the game looks great and is packed full of colour and the accompanying sound design is the perfect partner for the visuals and in a way this helps enhance the gameplay. At the end of the day Paladin could have been so much better and I would have given it a much higher score if it would have had more content. It’s a shame really because the content it does have is both fun and enjoyable, but there just isn’t enough of it and this means that the replay value is pretty much non-existent. The price at the moment is a little too expensive in my opinion and I wouldn’t recommend it until it reduces in price because there are quite a few twin-stick shooters that are better than Paladin out there.
