This game is gorgeous. I describe it as X-Men meets Call of Duty. I think there's amazing characters, powers and balancing going on. The idea that you have to change character just to counter another one is so basic and ridiculous. Seriously, most of the time the game is just stupid, like skeet shooting. In fact, I had a little fun 5-10 minutes on sessions of 2 or 3 hours... I will not have played more than 10 hours if I did not pay the game. Added to this is the fact that it looks like a rigged game, because the probability of making streaks of 20 games lost, 20 games won, which many players have noticed, must be close to absolute zero in a random draw. I do not see how the matches can other than intentionally be unbalanced to have such series. Very frustrating. I finally uninstalled it. 2 point for the graphism. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Anyone writing a review this late in the life of this game has probably played a very large amount of the competitive play list, which is great fun when played with friends, but kind of discredits their super negative response to this game. The competitive experience for me, as a player who grinded to the heights of Master rank, was ultimately was caused me to dislike the game. The nuanced bugs and issues in terms of interactions between heroes is hardly noticeable to a player who isn't taking the game seriously.

My friends who played casually enjoyed the game for a long time and moved on not because they started to hate this game but moved on because they found a new game they loved as well. The fact that I took this game seriously by playing the competitive modes made me more aware of the issues that existed. Those issues usually revolved around hero balance or interactions and bugs that made competitive moments feel out of my own control at times.

I truly believe that if someone were to pick this game up for the first time today, not taking it seriously and trying to be competitive with it, they would completely enjoy the robust roster of heroes and the plethora of abilities/modes/maps that are available to play around with and have fun.

I will say before ending that this game shines with friends when you're messing around and joking together. When played alone it can get a bit draining as it's very intense and high action.

The Gameplay is amazing. In every Mode there is a moment an intense battle starts and Communication with your Teammates is key! This Game is a game to play with a Team, and it is totally worth it because of the Teamwork. All of the Modes are fun to play with a team. The Matchmaking is ridicilously long in Quick Play, but you thankfully can play Practice Range or do some other things while waiting. In Overall I would not recommend playing it alone, it is way more fun playing with a team.
The Story of Overwatch is interesting, but I wish Blizzard will make a campaign for Overwatch 2 so we can learn more about the Overwatch World.
BUT. I think this game gets more credit than it actually deserves. I don't think that the Game is worth 60$ just for Teamwork and Multiplayer; It is fun, of course but it still is not worth 60 bucks. If there was a Campaign, this would be one of the best 60 Bucks I have ever spent.

Verdict; 8/10. While it might not feel like it is worth 60 Bucks, it is worth getting the game because the big amount of fun Teamwork, just not full priced.

2020 Edit: It now goes often on sale for 20$ and Bllizzard released a lot of new free content. Buy it!
Edit: IGN just posted an Ad and gave the game a 10/10.

All players know that each map has a specific character to be used in a strategy, that without exaggeration, all players repeat the same thing. For example Hanamura, who uses wrecking ball to spin and knock everyone down. In this type of map, which one team attacks and the other defends, it is much more difficult to attack, because the game is unbalanced because of Bastion, Torbjorn, Wrecking Ball, and others. I play on Xbox, and it takes thirty minutes to find a competitive match. And even taking a long time to find the match, it’s not because it’s more difficult to find the match, because they separate people by level and ranking, because if you’re level 100, you’ll play against level 1000 players, when I play with a full team pre formed by friends of mine, the opposing team is harmed, because my friends and I are talking to each other and we know how to communicate well. In a game like this, communication is very important, they should only be players from pre-formed teams, against other pre-formed teams. Even though it takes a long time, a bronze person plays against a platinum or diamond, all this proves that the delay is not because it is separated by platform, level and skill, it is just that there is no one playing. It is impossible to play twenty-four competitive matches in one day, because you will only be in the queue for twelve hours. The game has no updates, all year round are the same events, Christmas, birthday, archives, Chinese New Year, Halloween and summer games. The only difference each year is that it launches some new outfits that cost three times the price of others, and if you don't have points to buy them, and the event will end, you can't buy the item you want, the only way is buying loot boxes, which are very expensive and you will never win what you want in them. The most relevant updates they had was the launch of a new character, but they haven't released a new one in seven months. There are so few players that in each game there are at least two people on the enemy team that I have seen before, because they are always the same players. The competitive ones are very bad, it only serves to make you angry, get points to buy a golden weapon. Expand

Most people don’t remember when they talked about this but they said themselves that they were moving over to a 50/50 win loss ratio system, where matchmaking will always try to keep you at a 50/50 win loss ratio to improve matchmaking times. After this the game became just a headache to play in my opinion. You either get stomped on or do the stomping (9 times out of 10 you’re the one getting stomped) hero’s are unbalanced, there is no real “matchmaking” anywhere when you as a level 60 can be paired up with 200-300+ level players. Honestly if you played overwatch before, remember it for what it used to be, maybe come back from time to time to play a game or two but move on, if you’re thinking about buying this game I can’t suggest it, I loved and love overwatch but I just can’t recommend the headache it will give you getting into a game where most the time the balancing feels unfair. Another problem is sometimes spawn killing and how theirs no defense against it games like Siege has it where you can pick where you spawn and i suggest overwatch follow suit cause its annoying to be leaving your spawn as a mercy then BAM widow-maker shoots you and your dead or a bastion hiding in a corner waiting for you to leave. like i stated this is a great game and if you could get it for 50$ or less ill say take it maybe even 55$ cause unlike most game like this its not a PAY TO WIN all new characters that drop are free skins voice lines and spray paint you cant earn with money you have to get on the game around that time and earn it by grinding loot boxes ik most people arent a fan of it but the lootboxes are free the only thing i suggest is Blizzard allowing you to buy skins with the in game currency like the Halloween editions not just the basic ones but this is a nice fresh game i love watching the MLG and i cant say that for a lot of games i play. I enjoy the characters and their interactions I mean for a shooter type game to give their characters stories that are fresh and can even challenge LOL its amazing most of these negative reviews are from 2016 the game has evolved hugely since then and they've added a lot more game modes so ill pick it up for 50$ since the community is still alive and they gaming Blizzard working on this game Expand

It was released on May 24, 2016 but since then many improvements have been made. Comparable to TF2, it has made a big impact in the eSports scene and made shooters more kid-friendly, with blood and gore being minimal. Blizzard is known to be a great game maker and despite this being their first multiplayer shooter, it has been a success.
I played six months after the game came out and as soon as you get the game, you realise that it is very PvP orientated with little PvE gameplay apart from rare events that happen every few months. It is a hero shooter, with a wide range of characters with very diverse power sets. This allows every game to be different and make each game feel fresh. Instead of the cliché, "how many people each team can kill", Overwatch is very team based which allows for a very teamwork focused element in the game. There are three main game modes, with a custom game feature which allows you to change how the game is played and adds variety.

    Main body

The story in Overwatch is what brought many people over to it, with exciting cinematics being produced every so often and a very diverse set of characters that bring a lot of different cultures to the game. From assassins to cyborg ninjas to talking gorillas, the story has it all to bring a range of people over to the game. This game is very accessible, even for new FPS players. With skill based match-making putting you with people of your skill level, anybody can play this game and have fun as the game continues to make games harder as you get better. The mechanics in Overwatch are very good in my opinion. The controls are very accessible and easy to learn, which is very important for a game with 28 heroes to choose from. With the so called "meta" always changing, there is no wrong hero to pick which makes you feel freedom when playing. The graphics in Overwatch have a cartoony feel, which allows the game to be for all ages as the blood is very minimal. These kind of graphics are perfect for a game like Overwatch because you would not want perfectly realistic graphics for a very action packed game like this.
As said before, there are a variety of game modes which means you will never run out of things to play and adds longevity, a very important feature for a game like a first person shooter.
Sounds and music are very good in Overwatch. With its own soundtracks, and particular characters having conversations with other characters in game, this not only makes the game more immersing but also adds lore to the game while playing. Every few months, more and more voice lines and sound feature are added to the game so there is no shortage of voice lines for players to enjoy.
Overwatch is not pay to win, which makes it a very good game to pick up if you do not spend money in games. There are microtransactions, such as buying loot boxes and aesthetics, but these are by no means necessary to help you play. Often skins that are brought out for heroes are good, but can be earned without buying skins too as you get a loot box every time you level up, which does not take very long (from experience).

    Conclusion

This leads me to give the score of 9/10. I definitely think this game is worth picking up as it is not very expensive due to it being out for just more than 2 years now. The one thing that lets down this game is the community (so not anything in the game). The community can be extremely toxic but this is easily avoided by staying away from these players and muting anyone like this.

Honestly, I'm wasting my time telling you the lore because you won't find it in the game. This game is solely multiplayer and has no campaign, which is unacceptable for the price you need to pay to play this game. Sure there are events regarding lore but this is once a year! If you into the lore of this game, wait until they release a campaign or permanent PVE mode because you might as well read the comics.
This game gets repetitive very quickly and most of the heroes remain unbalanced, which can be unfair and annoying to play with as some heroes are stupidly overpowered and some are completely useless. This game is too overrated and didn't deserve any awards.
    Also Lootboxes...
    This game has positives however...
The game looks really nice and the controls are really good. The Heroes are very unique and control differently. But that's it...
If you want to play a multiplayer online game, play Team Fortress 2, you get more content, play styles, maps, balance, A PVE MODE!!!! and enjoyment... ALL FOR FREE might I add.

I had lost all hope for Blizzard in the WoW-centric era of their development. Finally releasing non-MMO sequels (Starcraft II, Diablo III) couldn't restore my love of their brand. But, one day, I learned they were attempting a new IP for the first time in 13 years AND a new genre. That game was Overwatch.

Overwatch was once a fun game. The characters are all visually well designed, and I love almost all of them. I was also a fan of how each character had a set loadout, and had only cosmetic unlocks to be earned over time. Plus, the objective based play made the game feel different than your average CoD or Halo title. Throw in a fun seasonal game mode every once in awhile to keep things fresh, and you had a halfway decent multiplayer title. Not to mention the graphics were very crisp for its cartoony style.

Unfortunately, Blizzard has absolutely no idea what they're doing. Their questionable balance changes, being knee-jerk reactions to high/low usage of certain characters, are never subtle. They'll take a seldom used character, and make them broken to the point of being the meta (Bastion, Junkrat), or make a character unusable for a season or two (d.Va, Roadhog, Lucio, ect). They'll even defy their "logic" and do a unneeded character rework when the character already was in heavy use (Mercy). The game will likely never see an actual balanced state at any point in its lifetime, so enjoy having your favorite heroes randomly become unusable.

Their matchmaking and skill distribution is subpar at best, as well. I am hard pressed to find a game where skill ratings seemed to mean as little as in Overwatch. Simply put, at almost any level of play, there is an extreme gap between actual skill of players; you'll have guys that are superstars and guys that definitely belong multiple tiers lower, with almost nothing in between. Just finding a match that feels good, outside of you unfairly stomping the opposition, is a rarity.

Unfortunately, as a multiplayer-only title, the game is woefully incomplete. Considering the price tag, multiplayer should have been treated as an afterthought to a story rich campaign. The story is there, and is rich... but aside from a short cut-scene at the beginning of the game/at the start of a seasonal game mode, none of it is presented in-game. Considering Blizzard forced console players to buy the more expensive Origins Edition (which only included a few cosmetics, for an additional $20 at launch), there is a clear lack of value presented in the title.

    2) It's functional. Seriously, the game works. It works well. The balance is carefully curated, and the meta, while constantly shifting, always does feel balanced. The game-modes aren't monotonous, even though they are objective oriented which can be problematic sometimes.
    3) It's *supported.* Jeff Kaplan and the overwatch team Support the game and remain engaged with the community. They're constantly adding heroes and adding new modes and maps to make the game fun. They're adjusting abilities to move the meta towards an essentially impossible goal of perfect balance. They're working to make sure that the players, who support the game through loot-box purchases, remain happy, and that's amazing. And rare. And it should be emphasized.

Certain developers could take some hints from Blizzard on this one (I'm looking at you, EA.)

The lack of content and maps is a huge problem. How it won GOTY surprises me. I'm not gonna deny it's a great game and I think it can be a game even better than TF2 in the future. But it's stage right now,
even after one year, is still lacking. Blizzard is still making these "Cinematics" which I really hate. Their effort for trying to make a story off of videos just has to stop.

When playing any of the game modes i promise you that you will be entertained due to the pace being perfect to keep your attention and at the same time not overload your hands so that you can't play the game, in other words its definitely a game made for many different people.

Altogether i believe that Overwatch is a very fun to play game for many ages and everything about it is pretty spot on, there isn't much that i would change about this game other than maybe adding a campaign because i believe it could be very fun if they did it right.

Blizzard’s newest game, Overwatch, has won over 100 awards including Game of the Year 2016, leading us to believe it’s a one of a kind game for a wide audience. With a choice from 25 characters and a variety of gameplay to experience, Overwatch is definitely a game to try out.
A crucial part of the game is the cartoon styled characters which are categorised into 4 different groups: Offence, Defence, Tank and Support. Within the groups, each character has their own unique abilities to ultimately win the match. My personal favourite characters from each category would be, Tracer, Mei, Zarya and Lucio. Each of these characters have very different gameplay; Tracer is agile and quick as she can teleport around the map and go back in time to regain health, while Mei is typically used for stealth as she can freeze enemies and kill them with a headshot afterwards.
Not only are their skills diverse but their backgrounds are too, Blizzard really outdid themselves when it came to the characters, animated shorts have been released for certain characters further explaining how they came to be a member of Overwatch.
When playing online they are three different game modes; Quick Play, Arcade and Competitive. You can choose which mode best suits you. However, the objective within matches in Quick Play or Competitive is to either push the payload as far through the map as you can or to capture an objective and hold it till the percentage equals 100%. Be warned, if you’re playing the same character on every map, attack and defence, you’re going to get bored eventually which is why the vast selection of heroes is so important. It keeps the game fresh.
Competitive is my preferred game mode. Once a new season starts you participate in 10 placement matches and are placed into a tier based on your skill within games. Your skill rating changes depending on how many medals you achieved in game but mainly if you won or lost. At the end of the season, you win a collection of competitive points dependant on what tier you’re in, which can be used to buy golden guns for any character along with other rewards. The idea of a Competitive game mode is really fun, it can help you find how good of an Overwatch player you are, but in all honesty unless you are placed in a high tier there’s not much hope. Many other online players often cause havoc on teams as they aren’t picking the heroes that are potentially needed to win the game.
Within the world of Overwatch sound plays a huge part in fully immersing yourself in the gameplay, each hero has their own voice actor based on the country the character originated from. Mei for example is Chinese, therefore so is her voice actor which is an amazing extra. They all have their own voice lines, in English and their native language. While in a game, if an enemy uses their ultimate ability the hero will say so in game using his/her unique voice line to alert every player that this is taking place. The use of sound is super fun and helpful in game.
As the developers of this game is Blizzard, they are constantly working on how the game could be improved and listening to what the players themselves have to say. Videos are often published online from the Lead Developer of Overwatch, Jeff Kaplan, who explains what they are adding to the game and what that means for us. Characters are constantly being buffed or nerfed depending on players’ remarks of them and how popular each character is. Every 3 months, a new hero is added to the game which always seems to cause a wave of excitement as another animated short will be released to go along with the new addition. The updates are frequent and the majority of bugs are quickly found and corrected.
Another huge part of Overwatch is the customisation of the characters as well as the events that are held. Each character has their original outfit along with other skins, maybe in a different colour or even following a specific theme; these can be obtained by opening loot boxes which can be bought with real money or receive one after levelling up, or using the in-game currency. After having a whole year of Overwatch, the following events are likely to take place every year now; Summer Games, Halloween Terror, Winter Wonderland, Lunar New Year, Uprising and Anniversary. When these events are active extra game modes are added keeping to the theme, now it may just be me but I find these events really fun and do nothing but add to the already wonderful game.
Finally, the price of Overwatch constantly varies from £25-£50. Overall Overwatch is a fun game suitable for anyone, particularly those who are already fans of Blizzard. There is such a wide variety within the game and there's guaranteed to be a character that suits the gameplay you're looking for. In my opinion, it is more of a social game, to play with friends is better than by yourself but that doesn't mean you don't have a good time. To put it plain and simple, it's worth every penny.

The maps and their level design are visually appealing and their obstacles encourage different ways to approach a situation. Graphics aren't realistic compared to games like Battlefield, but the art style is an absolute charm to look at, making it differ from other first-person shooter out there. Sound design and the soundtrack itself is stellar and iconic; it blends in very well with whatever part of the game you are in (main menu, map themes, gameplay, after-game etc.) The gameplay is diverse, versatile, and innovative, presenting players to think carefully on how to handle enemy players. Team work is essential in Overwatch and communication is key, and after joining up with my friends we had a blast playing together, conversing on how we will handle objectives and such. I must say though that some heroes perform better than others, meaning that the diversity of who to choose from decreases. This is especially evident in competititve mode, where for most games, I had come across very similar team builds, making the gameplay experience slightly repetitive and stale. Of course, Blizzard can buff and nerf certain heroes to improve the balance of the multiplayer. The major issue I have with the game tends to be more based around community than gameplay, this game draws arrogant solo "carriers" to it like moths to the flame, a character trait which is detrimental to a game that relies so heavily on calculated and effective team work and cooperation. So often you play with abusive players who claim to be carrying teams and blame their player ratings on others rather than acknowledging that there may in fact be a skill deficit between confidence and ability. I think these sore losers are probably responsible for a large quantity of the negative reviews. (don't get me wrong I lose plenty. I just accept my limitations)

    - addressing peoples concerns about lack of story, this game is developed around the idea of an interactive community the story content related to character depth is often in the form of external media which you can chose to access or not, some of the movie shorts created for characters are really entertaining and some of the character lines and interactions in waiting rooms leave you wondering what is going there.
-game depth, this is achieved through a large character class counter system which works remarkably well with constant free updates and patches to work on balancing.

At least on xbox one the matchmaking takes a lot of time. The characters are not balanced at all. Low player base on consoles. Bought this game and regret it.

People also say it can get boring, which is a personal thing. I have been playing overwatch ever since it has released with the lack of content, and not getting bored. Also people who keep saying that this is a team fortress 2 ripoff, just stop. It isn't all that much like team fortress. The variety of characters in overwatch is much better and more different than TF2, and story behind these characters are much better. The gameplay in overwatch is amazing, and much more fun than any other shooter I played. The animated shorts that Blizzard makes are awesome. Overall I have rated Overwatch as my #1 game of all time. I haven't spent as much time on any other game as i have overwatch. The fun and joy overwatch brings me is just amazing and no other game has given me that. Like I said, overwatch isn't for everyone. If you don't like games that are repetitive, then that's fine. There is only one thing that I hate about overwatch. The community. In the first 3 months of Overwatch's release the community was great. I didn't come across one toxic player ever. But after that the toxicity you would find in overwatch is nearly 100%. There is a hero that I play all the time (still today as well) that if i played him in the first 3 months, no one would get mad, but now if i choose him, i get reported, called a troll, told to switch, or even they would throw matches. This game is great if you can deal with a over-toxic community. Expand

Every team is faced with decisions and the small individual can do great things to sway the tide of battle. Team balance and cohesion is everything. You can take this game as seriously as you want to. There are professional MLG level players and there are very laid back fun matches. Literally every character is enjoyable to play.

Does the game lack content? Kinda... There are two basic objectives- capture a point, and escort a payload that are used and sometimes combined in mostly asymmetric matches. There are a number of maps that do feel similar at times. However, the characters are each different enough that the lack of single-player campaign can be overlooked if you take the time to learn most of them.

If you are the type to only play with 1 or 2 characters this game might seem lacking at $60.

For those willing to learn the various toons in the game this is easily 8 out of 10.

If not, this is a strong 6- above average, buy used.

So, I give it a 9, because is funny and enjoyable, but, with the thinking that it costed more than it really costs. Anyway, if a game gives you the fun you are looking, and you spend some hours in it... Who cares of how much it costs?

    3. It's the rock, paper, scissors the video game. Certain characters have an almost unwinnable handicap in certain areas, and it sucks to turn a corner and by no fault of your own, get hooked in by Roadhog, then immediately killed. Or, be in a building, get flashbanged by McRee, then immediately killed by his alternate fire, unless you have about 300+ health. In short; players are rewarded and punished essentially at random and can simply not respond to certain characters.

    4. Ultimate's that are definitely not equal in power are all unlocked at seemingly the same rate. It is stupid that McRee's ultimate, which can potentially wipe out an entire team, is unlocked just at fast as Soldier 76's dramatically worse Tactical Vision.

    5. Microtransactions. If I only play Reaper, please let me only buy stuff for Reaper. No player wants to drop $20 for the CHANCE to get gear for their favourite character.

Different does not mean good. Overwatch is bad.

You have a nice selection to choose from and each of them have their own abilities that set them apart from one another. They do lack true personality, but their different roles on the battlefield allow you to pick the ones that suit your play style.

Even better is that you can change which character you're using either upon death or back at the spawn point. This ensures that you aren't locked into one character type for the entire match and allows you to change up your approach in order to combat whatever the other team is throwing at you. Each character is effective in their own way, with their own strengths and weaknesses to ensure that the entire thing is fairly balanced.

The depth definitely comes from the characters. Figuring how best to use them and what scenarios they can help you overcome is a blast. Utilizing their different powers makes for frantic, exciting combat. The overall package is missing the potential for true depth though. That is due to the lack of modes.

While what's here is fun and works, the lack of options in the mode department keep it from reaching the true depths of it's tactical potential. With a more diverse selection of match types, the sheer variety of potential situations mixed with the already diverse cast of characters and abilities on display, could have taken this to true heights of depth and strategy, on the fly, in cooperative multiplayer. As Overwatch expands, which is hopefully going to happen, the potential here could be reached and gamers could have another masterpiece on their hands. As of right now though, there are only two modes and an option for custom games. Something that may actually bore gamers after a while.

This is also a multiplayer-only shooter. There's no campaign or single-player content of any kind. That alone could lead gamers to feel like they just got ripped off. Especially since that as of right now the game is still pretty close to that $60 price tag it launched with.

Yet, even if it's a little bare bones in some areas, Overwatch can still provide hours of entertainment. Matches are fun and the characters are great. There's also a great system that lets players pat the person they think did the best in the match, be it on their team or the other, on the back. With a little fleshing out of the modes and personality, Overwatch has the potential to soar to the tops of multiplayer gameplay. As of right now, it's still a great game.

I stopped playing the game because after a couple weeks I felt like things just got too repetitive and it was always the same thing and I would always just switch between 3 or 4 different character. I suppose that it would have retained more replay value if I was playing with friends but this is a game that I would mostly play by myself.

Like one of our favourite table top RPG games, it's fast, furious, and fun. It doesn't necessarily tax the braincells but co-op play is fun and with the absence of on screen loot drops, it doesn't mean you are left cursing as someone beats you to a weapons upgrade or ammo cache, and that makes a welcome change.

Oh and camping? Not much of an issue here I've found, even with the new DLC character Ana, who is clearly a sniper, camping is not encouraged because if you stay in one spot you will soon find yourself having to play 'catch up' with the rest of your unit.

This is also a factor when you die, and is a minus point against it. There are times when you re-spawn some distance away from your comrades, so you have to run like the clappers to catch them up. Sometimes the fight can end before you can get there, especially in the dying seconds of the match making you feel, 'heck I missed mop up!' which can cost you some XP.

All in all it's fun. Is it a must buy? CoD players and Destiny players will probably think not. People who like their sessions to be relatively quick without a mission based grind however may find this more appealing. It all depends on what you are looking for and for some time, I admit the coin was up in the air. I say worth getting but the coin almost fell on the side of must buy.

I also appreciate that Blizzard is following through with their promise for long term support of this game. Having already released a new hero and a surprise Olympics event, I feel certain that there is much more to come for this game, promised at no extra cost. The only real problem with the launch of this game, is that there is not enough Overwatch. Looking at the game on release compared to the beta, I personally fail to see much difference other than some balancing. We didn't see any new maps, new characters, or any new modes. I think that while it is good that they did a "balance" test while also doing a stress test, it really took away from that "new game" wonder when you play a game for the first time. Another problem with this game is that everyone can choose the same character, unless in competitive mode which is a mess too, at the start which tends to cause pickup teams to lose and just wastes player's time.
You also can't just play this game solo and join a random team with any sort of success which makes this game a waste of time and isn't fun.
Lastly the constant nerfing of characters by Blizzard due to pressure from players with no skill is really annoying. The game hasn't been out long and so to nerf all the characters they have has either cause those characters or others to become unbalanced which is annoying.
