Orangeblood certainly has the style to draw players in but it sadly lacks the engagement of gameplay to keep us there. Fans of JRPG’s might be more willing to put up with it’s nonsense, but even then I suspect many will expect better these days. Mid level saving would have gone a long way to improving the experience, but confusing menus, boring and random-luck based combat and a story that fell straight out of a teenagers sketchbook all add up to an underwhelming finished product.

Orangeblood on Xbox One is a game I wanted to adore. It looks stylish, feels nostalgic, and I’m in serious need of a great RPG to sink my teeth into. Unfortunately, its mediocre combat, slow-feeling story and cringe-inducing writing leaves me wishing I had spent my time on something with a little more substance.

Reservations aside, my love for indie RPGs pulled me through and I did have an appreciation for Orangeblood‘s pixel art and catchy soundtrack. It definitely has some personality and it’s worth a look as an oddity, but it’s just a shame that the combat doesn’t support the experience.

In an alternate 90's, somewhere near Okinawa gangs wage war for control of the area, Turf wars... You play as Vanilla, a slave caught up in the turf wars. In a very short story, you team up with three other girls to stop the turf wars. Each of the girls have their own unique abilities. Your AP and Ammo are one and the same, as each ability takes AP and you have to re-load to get your AP back. The game is a grind fest, but the combat itself is fun. The soundtrack feels like it was plucked from the 90's, and fits the near neon, cyberpunk, anime aesthetic. I wish the game had been longer due to story content not the need to grind to the extent you need to. The weapons are fun to mess around with, some having a high give and take ration, allowing to to seriously strengthen one stat while reducing another, adding an element of strategy to your equipment. Minus combat the entire narrative may run half a hour, and the plot goes in directions you wouldn't expect. Not on a Wow what a twist level, but more like a "WhAt?" moment. Orangeblood has a great combat system, but leans a bit to heavily on it for content, much much more could have been done, but what there is, is good. Expand
