    Odallus: The Dark Call on Xbox One is a promising retro title that is hamstrung by woolly controls and a stupidly massive hitbox for your character.

    Odallus: The Dark Call is an 8bit 2D Side-Scrolling Metroidvania-Lite Action Adventure. You are Haggus, you've lost your son, and your villageOdallus: The Dark Call is an 8bit 2D Side-Scrolling Metroidvania-Lite Action Adventure. You are Haggus, you've lost your son, and your village has been burned down by monsters. You now set out to destroy the monsters and whatever may be leading them. The gameplay is done on a variety of open exploration 2D maps with multiple paths and a Secret exit that's required to find to defeat the game. After you've defeated a level you can return to it at any time, allowing you to gain new abilities and search for the secrets, including the real Exit. The Graphics are dark and moody, bringing back the feel of the game's spiritual predecessors. The game features an incredible bit-chip midi soundtrack that keeps the mood of each area. The control is smooth and precise, making the experience even more enjoyable. The monsters have a great variety, and the Bosses are challenging, forcing players to memorize patterns, and test their reflexes. I only encountered one control issue, as you can have a hard time mantling up an edge, which causes a frustrating time with the boat that moves along by itself. Once and a while I'd fall off the screen in a secret area, but the way the game keeps your progression, these were but minor annoyances. Overall this is an incredible game, and it feels like an old NES title done right, the default visual settings even look like your playing on an old 4x3 tube television.… Full Review »
