A few of my friends who have been playing Next Up Hero since it came to early access on the PC have been giving me regular updates on the game’s progress and for the most part everything they said about it was mainly positive. This meant then when I found out it was coming to the Xbox One I was actually quite excited because it looked like a game that would tick a lot of boxes for me, and after playing it for a while I’m pleased to say that I’ve had nothing but enjoyable moments with it. Dungeon crawlers are my bread and butter and as far as dungeon crawlers go Next Up Hero is definitely a very good addition to the genre. In fact Next Up Hero kind of breaths new life into the genre because it features quite a few interesting and in some ways unique mechanics that never seem to get dull. This is a very good thing because in terms of content the game has more than enough to keep you satisfied and I can definitely see this being a game I sink a huge amount of hours into. The gameplay that the game delivers to you is simple to grasp but very difficult to master, so expect to die a lot. I didn’t find dying to be a problem though because I always wanted to jump into a new game straight away thanks to the gameplay’s addictive nature. That being said if you don’t like game’s that are too challenging then you’ll probably find that Next Up Hero isn’t for you. Thankfully I do love a nice challenging game because when you defeat a very difficult level you do get a great sense of achievement. I also found that I got a very rewarding feeling every time I defeated an enemy and this hasn’t dwindled in any way yet. Speaking about the enemies each enemy you face requires a different method to defeat them and the amount of variety that they have is quite high which in turn means things stay fresh and interesting for longer and ultimately it means the game has even more replayability because of this. A charming vibe seems to be present in all aspects of the game and that’s especially the case when it comes down to its presentation. Visually the game has a nice simple look to it and when you combine that with the very cute sound design you do end up having even more fun with the game. At the end of the day Next Up Hero may not be for everybody but even if you only have a slight interest in dungeon crawlers then I fully recommend that you give this game a try. It gets most things right and whilst it suffers with a few technichal issues you end up looking past these issues quite easily thanks to its fun and challenging gameplay. Expand

If you can get hold of Next Up Hero as part of Xbox Game Pass, then playing it is a no-brainer. It’s fast, fun, challenging and with the chance to build your own dungeons and test the world, it’s an enticing proposition. If you need to pay for the game with real actual money, then things get a bit trickier.

Between its fairly deep serving of content, its multi-tiered progression system and its innovative community death mechanic, Next Up Hero is certainly one of the better dungeon crawlers to release in recent memory. Its steep difficulty may not be for everyone, but if you relish a heavily challenging experience with heaps of replay value, this game should most certainly be on your radar.
