Fifth, the game promotes poking, which is super annoying and not fun. Sixth, the combos don’t come through as you enter them which is highly frustrating and pathetic on the game. The only good thing about this game are the graphics and brutalities. MkX outshines this game without even question. People want the gameplay to be fun and challenging. If someone beat you at MkX, they were generally better. On Mk11, you may get beat by a terrible player using simple moves. The game isn’t fun and is a huge let down given MK9 and MkX preceding it. 4 out of 10 and that is being nice. Expand

Alright, I was going to put a whole backstory of how my love for this franchise goes back all the way to 1992, when I was nine years old and how my childhood and teenage years can be defined by two words: Mortal Kombat. Alright, I was going to put a whole backstory of how my love for this franchise goes back all the way to 1992, when I was nine years old and how my childhood and teenage years can be defined by two words: Mortal Kombat. But then it got too long and I realized no one cares. Suffice to say, I've been playing the franchise since its debut.

Like most MK fans, I was hyped for MK11. Up until recently, I still was. That enthusiasm has subsided quickly once I actually started to play the game deeply. First, as you can see in a lot of bad reviews here, yes, a lot of fans do not like the political agenda that was injected around and into the game. No matter what your politics might be, keep them out of a product you intend to sell. It's common sense. You want to appeal to the largest number of people possible, not alienate a few, and then proceed to demonize them when they don't agree with your line of thinking. Whether you are a liberal or conservative, your message will upset roughly half the people either way. So avoid it. In the case of MK, the devs responded by saying "please, don't call them fans" when it was pointed out to them that some fans didn't agree with their ideologies seeping into the game.

Well, I own Mortal Kombat 11 on Steam, Xbox, PS4, and Switch, all last three being the Ultimate version. So yeah, I am a fan... but not a fanboy. Big difference. So you bet, I will review every port I own appropriately.

Graphics -They are absolutely fantastic, no doubt. This is the best looking fighting game at the moment and the best looking Mortal Kombat game ever made, by far. Yeah, lots of gear customization here, which seems to have become the focal point of this game. But once you start fighting red Scorpions or neon Sub-Zeros, along with some downright embarrassing and nonsensical costumes that are repulsive to look at, I wish the system disappeared forever. Preset skins like MK9 and MKX were the perfect compromise. This is MK, not Street Fighter or Injustice.

Story - Poorly written, but entertaining nevertheless. I think the visuals and familiarity we have with the characters mask that downside quite well. No? Well, put that plot in a movie with unfamiliar characters outside the MK universe and you got yourself a box office bomb and a laughing stock.

Sound and music - Sound effects are great. The music is boring, forgettable, and unmemorable, better suited in a superhero-themed game. Get rid of this orchestral garbage and bring back the East Asian undertones and kung-fu atmosphere that was part of the foundation of this franchise, please.

Gameplay - It's very deep, the tutorial is great, one of the best I have ever seen. Frame data, block advantage, man - it's really something to get into. Makes you appreciate fighting games and how technical they can be. That being said it is slower than MK9 and 10, which bothers some people. I really like the customization of abilities, you can really put your gameplay style and personality into your character.

Single-player - Making progress is nightmarish, demoralizing, ludicrous, an affront to nature, and everything that is good and decent. It's like EA and Konami got together to make something as greedy and as evil as possible. It's disgusting. I like to dive deep into games, especially Mortal Kombat, just really doing everything the game has to offer. Here, the only things being offered are frustration and despair. I'm talking about the grinding, of course. This should be called a "working for Netherrealm simulator" - a taste of what crunching might feel like, except you're paying, instead of getting paid. Let this sink in: people actually use a turbo controller exploit and the AI to play the game for them and make progress. It's the only way unless you abandon all life outside this game.

This game is like a greedy pig of a mobile game. It absolutely destroys an otherwise near perfect MK entry. I cannot begin to tell you how sad, hurt, and disappointed I am. For the first time in Mortal Kombat history, there are online requirements. You cannot even enter the Krypt if you are not connected to the MK11 servers. And it's all because the in-game currency can be purchased from them as "Time Krystals", with real money. That's what is all about. Despite the initial deception, this game is essentially a big loot box from hell and I despise it for it. Will I continue to play? Yes, I already spent all that money. But will I buy MK12? I highly doubt that things will revert to what they once were. In fact, it can only go worse from here. So most likely, no. This is probably the last MK game I will ever buy. Unless online requirements and grinding is gone, I'm out.

Xbox One X specific - This is the best console port as far as graphics, due to the more advanced hardware. It looks amazing and much closer to 4k than the PS4 Pro, even though I've been playing mainly on the latter, just because I bought that console first.

Unbalanced meta, horribly clunky mechanics, and a complete disregard for the competitive scene. The designers of MK11 clearly took all the worst aspects of MKX, which was a fun mess of a game, and Injustice 2, which was for the most part well balanced, and created a Frankenstein-esque monstrosity of a game designed to appeal to shallow idiots.

The game is still a complete 50/50 based mess, just like MKX, but with the execution barrier removed for the specific characters that the dev team finds most compelling design-wise. The new throw/stagger mechanics are poorly implemented, the Fatal Blow mechanic is poorly implemented, and the combo variety (which was a big appealing factor of the previous entry in the series) is significantly reduced. The variation system returns somehow even worse than in MKX: the characters feel like even more of a watered-down mess than in the last iteration. There is no reason to buy this game over MKX except for the artwork and visual design, which is admittedly beautiful and intricate. However, when you look at how the developers abused the artists responsible for this beautiful design, and when you look at how obstinately the developers have ignored the community requests for reasonable balance changes, you can understand how absurdly inept the team truly is.

**** this game, and **** the developers. They refuse to listen to criticism, and their corporatism has led a legion of idiots from constructing a pseudo-competent defense of this game's flawed systems to full-on defense of Netherrealm's predatory practices as well. I can only hope that their next game leads to such dismal profits that they are forced to confront their terrible work and progress critically from there to creating a game experience that is more nuanced and less insultingly shallow.

The towers are very confusing and the krypt makes you think it’s a shoalin monks type game but it’s not, it’s just a glorified place to open loot boxes with several currencies that sound like they came out of lucky charms. I am a life long fan but when I play a game that is basically a rebboot of a series that’s just been rebooted in the past 10 years, I don’t feel compelled to get attached to characters or their stories because within 4 years you can literally just undo it. A lot of the characters are just written out of character or they literally make you sit through an arc that character finished(I’m looking at you scorpion). I played the story once, the krypt once, and a tower and I have no desire to go back, which is sad because I was addicted to mk2. Nrs has their work cut out for them. Mk12 cut the sjw non sense, I shouldn’t feel like I’m doing a math problem to buy stuff that’s on the disk that I paid full price for, and really focus on the lore that you created.....we’ll wait you’ve undone that with the ending, so make a fresh start, new characters, make the scorpion specter a curse or something(have a new host) just a completely new game altogether. Use this as a learning experience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay in Mk 11 feels really bad and the game as a whole is terribly designed with the mobile game layout. The game has server crashes as well which I’ve never had to deal with in previous mortal kombat games and the krypt is a time consuming grind fest just to dress up the characters. The game has so many penalties that it does not warn you about like losing augments during re rolling for gear items. The game is inconsistent and frustrating making it not worth buying. Even when pulling off a flashy kombo it doesn’t feel as good as it does in the last game. I see many people constantly having to contact customer support from WB games with various issues ranging from bugs and glitches to getting gear items You already own when thats not supposed to happen. I went from telling everybody to get this game to please don’t waste your money or your time just because it’s better than the other fighting games on the market. This doesn’t give this game the right to be as unfinished as it is.happen Expand

    Cons
    - VERY grindy (talking P2W grindy)

    - Customization. almost all the "different" skins are the same thing with a different color scheme. Sure, objectification is a thing these days, but no one has to choose the revealing suit on the females, just like they don't have to have the men shirtless. Make it a choice. At least bring back the classic outfits. Make the different skins actually different. Color changes should not be an unlockable for a full price game and a game is not a place to force your political SJW beliefs on people.

    - amount of playable characters. In a game where the past meets the present, The opportunity to bring in ALL the bad ass characters in the MK universe was unprecedented. Instead most were left out. (and several of the fan favorites.) Unless they're going to show up as DLC. which is cool for the major players (Goro) but not so much for the regulars (Mileena, Reptile,....too many to list)

    - tower difficulty is stupid. Just stupid. Medium difficulty (the lowest I've seen so far) actually translates to absurd. Every battle has an opponent only modifier ranging from extra damage to a second opponent showing up to juggle you to infinity. Noob Saibot has a modifier where you go "blind" when hit.....Try playing MK with your TV turned off.......yeah, that stupid.

Basically is a beautiful game with a great storyline that seemed more concerned with a cash grab than giving players what they want. Everything they did right with Injustice 2 (costume customization, varying difficulty towers, char progression, etc.) they've abandoned here. I'm betting the MK fanbase is gonna shrink substantially after this one. The inevitable MK12 will be a "wait till it's on sale" buy for me.....if I bother at all.
Should have bought the PC version on Steam so I could have refunded it.

So I just played again after the update. Tripled the currency rewards, which allows you to grind chests faster, but still grindy. Tower difficulty has been very slightly adjusted, but most are still way too hard for average players like myself. Even after the update, I'd still refund it if I could.

First, the game play itself is actually fun. BUT it is so grindy, and not all the move s are available 24/7, you have to get gear to get slots to put moves in to have a good character. I don't care about the endings, (no matter how half assed they are with their painting endings) and the stupid damn Krypt to roam around in is dumb.

I haven't played online against people I assume that everyone runs the same top builds. Which is why I have avoided it.

A Komplaint I have not seen is that the Time Towers are too few in numbers. There is a daily set, an hourly set, and the rest that lasts longer than a day. If you grind at it you will find that you are out of towers you want to do pretty quickly. Also, tower sets repeat meaning fewer rewards from those towers if you already did them.

In some ways there are only marginal and cosmetic differences from Mortal Kombat XL. That’s no bad thing, as fans of the series as well as fans of NetherRealm’s last fighter, Injustice 2, will be comfortable with the feel and mechanics, but those tweaks and enhancements, as well as the excellent story mode, mean that with MK11, Mortal Kombat has pretty much now been perfected.
