It may not be as expansive or inspire as much creativity as its namesake may lead you to believe but Minecraft Dungeons is certainly a solid and enjoyable isometric action game with character progression that'll keep you hooked.

Minecraft Dungeons on Xbox One is a fun but flawed dungeon crawler. Mojang has done a pretty good job adapting the franchise to the dungeon-crawler style. However, in their attempt to streamline the more niche genre to reach the broader Minecraft fandom, they have somewhat lost sight of some of what makes those titles so endearing.

Minecraft Dungeons offers a very Diablo-like dungeon-crawling experience without the gore and grimdark atmosphere.

Minecraft Dungeons is missing conspicuous parts of what gave the namesake its identity--most noticeably, breaking through walls to explore underground caverns and using the found materials to craft. But because it's such a successful departure from its predecessor, Dungeons shows how flexible the franchise has become. Rather than shift our expectations of what games can be, it's banking on its own popularity to introduce younger players to a classic genre and serves as a short-but-sweet treat for looter vets. It scratches the dungeon-crawler itch with a sense of goofy charm and expands what Minecraft can be.

Minecraft Dungeons has a solid core, and I’d love to see where it goes from here. Hopefully, Mojang recognizes the fact that games with grinding don’t have to be as much of a grind. It would be great to have some kind of way to experience levels in a remixed format, similar to how Diablo III has rifts or Torchlight and Path of Exile offer more randomized maps to encourage replays. But Minecraft Dungeons’ current approach is simply replaying the same stuff over again, and just isn’t enough.

Minecraft Dungeons does provide a level of ease and accessibility and proves to be a fun romp in small doses. However, there are a few sticking points that prevent it from standing out as anything special. By the end, I couldn't help but feel like it was overly simplistic and somewhat restrictive. And that hurts coming from something with the name "Minecraft" on it.

Minecraft Dungeons is incredibly accessible and offers a - to a certain degree - fun challenge for experienced gamers. The game is fairly short and here and there a little shallow, but find a co-op buddy and you’ll guaranteed have a great time.

A modern day alternative to Gauntlet, whose innate shallowness and overreliance on random generation is balanced out by some fun combat and great co-op action.

Minecraft Dungeons is a solid dungeon crawler that will work wonders with younger audiences taking their first step into the genre, although will leave experienced players wanting something more significant. A brief campaign and underdeveloped hub world prevent it from achieving greatness, yet I can’t help but be impressed by the foundation Mojang Studios has built here.

Minecraft Dungeons is fun if a bit flawed and is one of those games best spent playing online with friends so you have something to do while shooting the shit with each other.

An oddly brief experience that feels unfinished to an extent. The fact that there are already two paid DLC packs on the way and Mojang is promising a number of free updates suggest that it expects players to stick with it and keep playing as new content is added.

With only the blocky aesthetic and familiar monsters to show for its heritage, whether you're here for the Minecraft or the Dungeons, you'll feel that much more could have been excavated from both. [Issue#347, p.96]

You can build anything in Minecraft, something this fun dungeon-crawler from Mojang ably proves.
  2. May 26, 2020
Microsoft and Mojang have created a game where you’re hitting endless minions and boss characters with all sorts of pointy weapons, but they did so in such a way that playing still feels creative, and freeing. That’s a very welcome magic trick from a series trying something this new, this confidently.

The most apt way to describe Minecraft Dungeons is “comfort food.” It takes two things many players probably already know well, mashes them together into a surprisingly cohesive whole, and then streamlines the experience so that almost anyone can pick it up and have some fun. It’s not especially deep or innovative. For the most part, it doesn’t do things that haven’t been seen before — but in the case of Minecraft Dungeons, that’s its biggest strength.

And you've come to the aid of the villagers, as the Evil Arch-Illager has declared all free people to be the enemies of the Illagers, and started to take the villagers captive, forcing them into labor to further his own means. You'll travel across this corner of the Minecraft Universe facing off against all the standard Minecraft Mobs, with a few new faces to add to the list. You can play as Steve? or Alex! as well as a bunch of new character skins. There are no defined classes in Dungeons, as what you can do is decided by what you equip. You wear armor and carry both a Melee and Missile weapon as well as three artifacts. There is a ton of weapons, both Melee and Missile to find, and more enchantments than you can shake a stick at. All of the different armor is geared towards a specific play-style, and I feel kind of shapes how you're building your character. There are nine main stages, five unlockable dungeons, and a special stage that takes finding a certain secret on each stage to unlock, it's quite the homage to Diablo. The levels are randomly generated, creating a new map every time you enter. You will see a lot of the stage is similar, as there are needed landmarks on each one. There are also three overall difficulty levels, each unlocked by beating the game on each of the prior. On the surface, Minecraft Dungeons may just look like a hack and slash trying to be an RPG, but it's far deeper than that. Between playing around with item combinations and challenging yourself with higher difficulties and new characters Minecraft Dungeons can provide days on end of play-time. Full Review »
