One of the best Lord of the Rings games with great gameplay and really good ideas. Even if you're not a fan of the franchise, it's a funny game from start to finish. Overall rating: 8.9.

"Shadow of Mordor" is an open-world action title that borrows much from the "Assassin's Creed" and "Batman: Arkham" games. Based on the Middle-Earth film adaptions by Peter Jackson, it takes place between the "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" trilogies. In the prologue, the Ranger Talion and his family are ritualistically murdered by The Black Hand of Sauron. Shortly after, he is resurrected and his soul is merged with a Wraith named Celebrimbor. As a result, Talion gains the Wraith's supernatural abilities and goes on a quest to avenge the death of his loved ones.

The game's innovative feature is the Nemesis system which affects the Orc armies in several different ways. So if you kill a Captain, power upheavals occur; other Orcs rise in rank and fight for promotions. But if the Captain survives your attacks, they’ll increase in power and change in appearance (to reflect their wounds). The Nemesis system leads to all sorts of unpredictable scenarios and that's what makes it unique. The game's progression system is more conventional. It is represented by a “tree branch” chart with different abilities you can unlock and upgrade. As you progress through the story, you'll also discover side-missions, weapon challenges, hidden artifacts and puzzle pieces.

Surprisingly, "Shadow" is a major gorefest. You’ll decapitate countless of Orcs as you advance in the game. Another surprise is the lack of lag during encounters with numerous on-screen enemies. The framerate never falters during these intense moments of battle. Overall, “Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor” is a fun action romp. A compelling story, fluid combat, the Nemesis system and impressive production values really make it shine. It’s one of the best video game adaptions of an existing property. I would rate it with an 8.6 out of 10.

Shadow of Mordor is a great adventure RPG game that feels like the perfect blend of Assassins Creed gameplay and The Lord of The Rings world. Relative short game but very enjoyable. A MUST play for Tolkien and Assasins Creed fans.

Shadow of Mordor is an fantastic game, the best about this game is the gameplay which is similar of the batman arkham series. The story starts strong which then become just avarage over time. There are many side missions to do and thanks to the nemesis every enemy doesnt look the same and is different variety is guaranteed.

The best way I can describe this game, it is a mix of Assassins Creed with the parkour/climbing and stealth, Batman Arkham with its combat, and Mortal Kombat with its brutal executions you can pull off. It has a great story that even someone like me could get into and understand, Somewhat open world as well and of course I HAVE to mention the Nemesis system.

In a nutshell, the orcs have leaders who you have to take down (Mini bosses if you will) and by killing them, you can get stronger...HOWEVER, if they kill you for whatever reason or you cannot kill them and they run away, they will remember you and the next time the fight ensures, it gives you more of a incentive to get your revenge. Even the dialogue changes.

Overall, fantastic game even coming from a LOTR noob like me!

Expand

I started the game again after a long time (had about 24 hours of playing time) and ended the whole thing after 35 hours today. A great game in the guise of Lord of the Rings, but not always convincing.

    story

Most of the time I had fun with the cutscenes and individual story sections, but none of that was outstanding now. The last two "fights" in the story are pretty lame.

    Gameplay

I finished the game because it was very repetitive but not quite as motivating at the same time.

But had my weapons fully armed except for the dagger. I just don't like stealth mechanics that much and what annoyed me even more was that you were forced to stealth during individual story quests.

In addition, the moment was when u could control a Uruk..very cool.. Unfortunately, this was not implemented that well in infight (friendly fire, etc. makes life difficult in the sometimes confusing fights).

The highlight is definitely the Nemesis system here there was one or the other almost godlike Uruk at the end: D.

    graphic

Looks okay even if the first area is very dreary. A bit of variety would have been good here (more areas). The opponents are presented really cool and are well synchronized, but unfortunately the voice repeats itself very often here.

    Conclusion

Good title in the Lord of the Rings setting, but with a few weaknesses. 7/10 severed heads.

anything less than a 9 is ridiculous. This game has done something never before seen in an action rpg. I named this game of the year the moment I made my first execution. If you haven't played it pick it up, its easy to pick up and get into it which is great for parents or people with busy lives and can't get involved in in depth story lines. The nemesis system is next generation.

It is arbitrarily grindy, and will pump up it's difficulty (after a couple of hours of playing). These unnecessary additions are just to get you to buy loot boxes. It's not as bad as EA's games on it's loot box greed. But not too far from it. Sad really, as it destroys an other wise great game.

And there is actual incentive to star aside from the main story thanks to the different skill trees and leveling system in this game..
You of course aqquire skills by leveling up from killing orcs and completing quests… this lets you unlock new skilsl in your skill tree..
But to unlock more tiers in your skill tree you need more power..
power is acquired by taking out orcs in saurans army..
The first half of the game is all about climbing your way through the orc ranks and taking out the 5 warchiefs..
you do this by grabbing orcs, enetering their brains,, and getting intel on your target..
this intel will tell you their location, their strengths, power and their weaknesses…
And once you feel youre prepared to take them down you can go into a power struggle to eliminate them..
But you have to be sure youre ready because of the games nemesis system…
the combat here is fairly simple and plays like the batman arkham games and the ps3 assassins creed games…
you can stealth kill enemies from bushes, ledges, behind, or from above.. use your bow to head shot or zip through thin air for a devastating blow.. ride in on the back of an animal or monster you’ve taimed in the wild..
or you can go in batman style countering attacks and going for annoying finishers that take 20 years to pull off and are nearly impossible to pull off outside of a main mission…
This is my biggest complaint with the entire game…
These missions to dethrone orcs are extremely frustrating because the game expects you to be able to take on 30 at a time while in the story they only ask you to deal with like 5 or 6 at a time..
The variety here is a lot like the arkham games where you eventually have to stun enemies or jump over their shields just to make things more frustrating…
but every time you go to do a ground finisher itss get broken up because it takes so long to pull off, thankfully you are eventually able to pull of moves like executions once you get a hit streak going of 8 and later 5, but this doesn’t help these encounters from feeling cheap…
if you do get knocked down,. You will.. a lot.. you have the opportunity to do a quick time event to get up again 2 or 3 times.. but eventually you will just die or if you mess up youll just die,,
And dying makes things even worse as the orc that kills you will remember you, they get promoted in the ranks, and their power ioncreases making them even harder to take care of the next time…
And then there are the collectibles and sidemissions that increase your attribvutes like health as well as open rune slots for your sword, bow, and dagger, these runes are picked up off of warchiefs and captains…
    Who also act as bodyguards…
so its important to take out a targets bodyguards before you attack them to make your encounter easier…
during the 2nd half of this 12 hours game.. you have to go through the same system..
this time however youre tasked with making your own army out of these orcs so you can challenge the black hand.. and you do this by your new ability to brand them..
Your goal is to now find a target and get them on your side..
you can either go right to a bodybuard or help your newly owed orc captain prove himself and become a bodybuard..

Außerdem fehlen mir persönlich Charaktere in der Spielewelt, die Tolkien´s Werke so ausgemacht haben. In a way, “Shadow of Mordor” is a quality title nearly as good as “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and “Assassin’s Creed II”. While the game borrows aspects from both, it also stands apart with its own innovative feature, the Nemesis system. While the game borrows aspects from both, it also stands apart with its own innovative feature, the Nemesis system. Based on the Middle Earth film adoptions by Peter Jackson, “Shadow of Mordor” acts as a bridge between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. It also introduces a new protagonist, a ranger named Talion. During the prologue, Talion and his family are ritualistically killed by The Black Hand of Sauron. However, Talion is merged with the wraith of an Elf Lord named Celebrimbor and gains wraith-like abilities. Shortly after, they embark on a quest to avenge the deaths of their loved ones. If it sounds a little like a Middle Earth version of “The Crow”, it really isn’t.

This is an open-world action game very similar to Ubi Soft’s “Assassin’s Creed” and “Far Cry 3” in terms of structure. It also features the intuitive combat system introduced in “Batman: Arkham Asylum”. What it brings to the table is the Nemesis system which affects the Orc armies in several different ways. For instance, if you kill a Captain, power shifts as the other Orcs rise in rank and fight for promotions. If a Captain survives your attacks, they’ll increase in power and change in appearance (to reflect their wounds). As you progress, you’ll eventually gain the ability to pit Orcs against each other. It’s a brilliant innovative feature that brings a sense of unpredictability to the battlefield.

The core gameplay of SOM is a hack n’ slash affair with plenty of side-missions and objects scattered throughout the map. The progression system is similar to the one featured in “Far Cry 3”. There is a “tree branch” chart that represents the different groups of abilities you can earn and upgrade. And just like in the 2013 reboot of “Tomb Raider”, you can discover hidden objects that reveal information about the past. Rated ‘M’ for bloody violence, this game is a major gorefest. You’ll decapitate countless of Orcs as you progress through the game. In fact, one of the most impressive features of SOM is the lack of lag during encounters with numerous enemies on-screen. The framerate never falters during these intense moments.

Overall, “Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor” is a near masterpiece of the hack n’ slash genre. The Nemesis system, a solid story, smooth combat mechanics and impressive production values really make it shine. It’s an example of how to make a really good action game based on an existing property. I’d rank it with a 9 out of 10.

The nemesis system is a great innovation but ii feels way to rushed, it doesn't has the impact that it could have had but it would be nice to see it again in the future.
The story is really simple, it doesn´t feels that great and has very chessy dialogue and the worst of all, the moment you really hope to happen is DLC. The side quests are very generic and don't bring the sensation of being interesting.
In terms of gameplay is very similar to the arkham knight series, the combat is very fluid, it tends to be a little repetitive but is cool when you start making combos. The only real problem is that at the end of the game you're like god and you're untouchable.
It would be nice to see a sequel if they improve the nemesis system (It has an amazing potential) and the story.

Pros: Nice graphics, Good controlls, interesting nemesis system

Cons: Story, Dialogue, Characters, Repetitive side quests, Unbalanced progression

This is a game about murdering orcs in various ways. The core combat and stealth mechanics are good, but it's a sandbox game with just a pretext of a story (making Assassin's Creed look like a literary achievement in comparison). After a little you've nothing new to do.
Adding insult to injury, the world is the ugliest place in Middle Earth, giving you very few incentives to explore it.

In short, after 5-6 hours, you will run out of interesting things to do, unless you really like brutality and orcs.
That said, the core mechanics are promising. I'd be interested in a sequel with more story and nicer setting.

A real surprise. The way you use orcs to fight against each other is genius, and there's a real sense of development in the game. I felt like the story could have been more captivating, and the ending felt a bit weak to me. But the amount of fun I've spent slaughtering orcs make it a must-play for me.

Interesting concept but grew quite boring rather quickly. I can't speculate on other reviews, but I can give an honest opinion based on not being a LOTR fanboy. The fighting mechanics are good, not great. The storyline didn't phase me and the hype over the integrated intelligence system was rather basic once indulged into a bit deeper. I probably won't go back to play seconds on this.

Have you played Batman: Arkham Asylum, City, Origins, or Knight? You have? Well guess what! You've played Shadow of Mordor as well!

What I found so incredibly disappointing about this game after all the the good things I'd read from fellow gamers (not media outlets), was how incredibly derivative this game was of the Arkham series (which I did indeed like). Sure I knew that it used a similar free-flow, attack and counter fighting system, but what I didn't know was that it would be the EXACT SAME system copied and pasted from the Arkham games.

Let me stress the point by saying that nearly every single button is mapped to the same exact move used in Arkham. X to attack, Y to counter, of course. But the B button will stun enemies with your cape, er, I mean ghost hand. A will allow you to jump up and over enemies carrying car doors and riot shields, er, I mean fierce orc-shields. Tapping left trigger will hit enemies with your batara-, I mean, knives. Tapping LB will engage detective mode, oh silly me, GHOST vision, so that you can see enemies through walls and other points of interest. Is your combo multiplier up? Well just hit Y+B to do a instant takedown, A+X to summon your bat(ghost)tornado and stun everyone around you, or use A+B to "disarm" your enemies by turning them to your side. Hold the right trigger to crouch and go stealthy using X for takedowns, etc etc etc.

And off course to accommodate the same combat system, you need the same enemy types. So don't expect to see any orcs that wouldn't fit right into the streets of Gotham. Just remember to dispose of them the same way you took them out a hundred times before with Batman. The only new features include a bow and the climbing system seen in games like Assassin's Creed or The Saboteur. You even synch the map with vantage points. It's not that there's anything wrong with the combat, in fact in works rather smoothly, (though some of the quicktime prompts seem unfairly short and/or unresponsive), it's just that I felt like I was playing a reskin-mod of Arkham rather than the first entry in a new franchise. This game is the definition of safe when it comes to creating a "new" IP.

The game looks decent considering it runs on last-gen consoles as well. The story has a cool premise but by the end it all just seemed kinda silly. The new characters are cliche and Gollum is thrown into the mix just for star-power and marketing. I didn't run into any glitches though, so that's always nice.

The one bright point is the Nemesis system, and while I didn't think it was nearly as revolutionary as everyone else seems to, it's at least SOMETHING to set it apart from Batman. It's neat seeing their different weakness and quirks based on your past meetings or outside events. And setting the orcs against one another in the latter half of the game is satisfying.

ME: Shadow of Mordor is not a bad game, but it's the most disappointing thing I've played since Destiny; another game that is actually pretty well put together, but fails spectacularly to meet the expectations it set forth. How people were praising this game as revolutionary and a GOTY contender is beyond me. Warner Brothers seems intent on running the free-flow combat "genre" it's created straight into the ground through over-exposure seeing as we now have 4 Batman games, Shadow of Mordor, and Mad Max. That's an average of one per year since 2009. So next time you want to (justifiably) critique other annual games such as COD, Madden and Assassin's Creed, think about Warner Brothers, too. Everybody's doing it. And while it makes sense from a business standpoint to stick to what works and what sells, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Talion seeks revenge gaining Wraith-like abilities from an Elf Lord of the past. While on his mission, he crosses path with Gollum who is seeking one of the Power Rings made by the elves. This prequel of LOTR packs in lots of bloody action with some stealth segments, and while it can get a tad bit repetitive, it's still a lot of fun. The nemesis system is the core to the whole game. How the nemesis system make this game awesome is unbelievable. The nemesis system is an awesome system that makes enemies strength, memory and fighting style completely random and a joy to test out. How your enemies remember your last encounter with them is just awesome and makes it even more exciting to fight them again.

The fights may or may not be rewarding considering everything is random. Loot and enemy in general are random. This is also a reason why the nemesis system can be a little bit stupid sometimes. If you die, your enemies gets stronger and may be awarded with captain status or worse at the beginning of the game which may also cause heavy frustration and hours of playing in one certain area because you can't kill the enemy that killed you before. Warning: TRY TO AVOID DEATH AT ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

The graphics are incredible and even better with rain. Cannot understand why some people say it's last gen graphics.

The side quest are useful to do, but damn it is boring sometimes and that made me avoid any of those until the end of the game.

The combat is awesome and final brutal kills are very satisfying (in the gaming sense of course). Nemesis system randomizes everything for you so no two players will have the same gameplay. Your dead empowers your opponents and you can make some enemies encounters very difficult if you do not plan your mission well. The stealth is very important and personal threats of your opponents are adding more layers to the game. If you like Assassin's Creed this game is for you. It is not as forgiving or easy as AC but this game will sink you in and in time you will master your combat skills making game much more enjoyable. My only beef with this game is that final two bosses fights were ridiculously easy to the point that I was surprised that the same devs who developed the 95% of game simply overlooked the final 5% of it to make the ending epic. There few bugs with camera but this game overall was great fun and worth every penny. I only could wish that Assassin's Creed could take Nemesis system and incorporate it there. I also hope for Shadow of Morder 2 to continue Tallion's adventurous fight against army of Sauron. Awesome job Monolith! Expand

I love the movies and really tried to like this game. What I could not handle is the monotony. Kill some dudes, go after a boss. Boss kills you gets promoted. You kill boss, you get a special item and another boss takes their place.

I really don't understand why people like this game and I am a fan of the fighting adventure games such as batman, tomb raider, and others.

A combination of the traversal/stealth of Assassin's Creed with the combat mechanics of the Arkham series brings us one of the best AAA titles of 2014. I'd even recommend this title to people who are not fans of the Middle Earth lore. Fans of stealth/ action games should not pass this one up.

A great game! It blends things from open world classics like infamous and Assassins Creed with Arkham series like combat. The nemesis system is great. Some of the enemies really rank up into beasts that are tough to take down so you better be tactical and smart about going at them.

I am really enjoying and addicted by this game.
They way you get involved with The hierarchy of Orcs, the side quests and the main quest it self.
The "Batman" fighting style is also very good.

For a long time I haven't been addicted by any game, and this one just broke the streak :)
    I do recommend this game.

Everything is great! Well most things were. Combat is fun and fluid. The brutal execution moves are always a joy. Although hard the game is still fair.... Usually. The control scheme and camera can be terrible sometimes. But other than that it's a decent game. It's proof that not all movie titles are bad.

Play this game if you want to put your controller through your TV screen. Terribly frustrating and "cheap" feeling. Button presses will occasionally not register, which matters quite a bit during the course of the game. The combat system is similar to Assassin's Creed, but not as polished. Avoid if you value your controller and/or TV.

A solid 52 hours worth of Uruk killing fun. Came away very impressed with the nemesis system and pretty interesting way they made the forging of the rings of power come to life on the screen. This was not the AAA game I was expecting to be playing this year, but I loved the surprise and hope the company stays in this genre and moves on to bigger and better things in the future.

This game is incredibly fun. The combat is amazing, the map is beautiful, and some of the characters are EXCELLENT!!! However, the game can get a bit repetitive, because it is basically only about killing orcs, and the story is a bit lackluster. However, this is a phenomenal game that is tons of fun to play, and achingly beautiful.

It was the first game that felt Next-Gen to me, and one of the best I've played on the Xbox one so far. Incredible experience the first time through, Beautiful graphics, Non-stop action packed fun, I haven't run through it a second time, so it hasn't been pulling me to play it again. That's the only reason I'm not giving it a 10, but I would say it more of a 9.5
    P.S. The unquestioned best

Incredible game, a lesson in how to do things right. It has original ideas, nice graphics, a ton of lore and a good solid plot. DLC is coming thick and fast and is well worth grabbing a season pass for. Only downside is the controls can be a bit clunky at first and the system for restoring health in my opinion is a bit lame, over than that a strong candidate for GOTY

Awesome game with very fun combat. The "nemesis system" is what really put this game over the top for me and kept me coming back to it. The story isn't all that great but I really enjoyed playing as Talion. Definately the best LOTR game I've ever played with tons of Easter eggs and cool references for fans of the franchise. Do not overlook this game!!!

Not he best but not the worst. This is a game where to really enjoy it you have to be a huge fan of the 'Lord of the Rings'. The combat, stealth and climbing are on point and the nemesis system is really cool but other than that I personally didn't enjoy it that much.

I loved this game. The controls reminded me of assassins creed but this is ten times better. I love the upgrades and runes you can add to your ranger. But adding just the right runes can make the game a little too easy. I would easily recommend this game to anyone.

Good game, I enjoyed the lands of Mordor more than I thought, it's no DAI but it certainly delivers on the action and environment, but I can't help the feeling that the hero was trained by batman, or perhaps the other way around?

I had one uruk whom I had been constantly chasing across merry Mordor due to his innate capacity for retreating. By the hundredth retreat he had garnered so much power that he was now an unstoppable machine. But in the end he fell at the hand of my blade and to see his cowardly reign come crashing down after we had such a rich and lengthy rivalry was actually kinda sad - I'll never forget you, Feldush the Poet.

There's obviously some crap points to the game. The story doesn't deviate from your run-of-the mill grimdark fantasy and the characters are so stilted that you would think they were crafted from actual pine-wood. There's also not much variety in it's gameplay because while the combat is a sadists wet dream, the mechanics barely deviate from killing uruks. So if that aspect of this game doesn't interest you, then not much else will.

When I got bored of Middle Earth, I was initially disappointed and intending to give it a 7 because I guess I had expected to pull more out of it. That was until I checked my game time. Unbeknownst to me I had spent fifty hours (not in one sitting, of course) slashing uruk throats and branding future war-kings. Fifty goddamn hours! How time flies in Mordor. The fact that fifty hours passed me by without a second thought is enough to recommend a purchase - especially if you're a fan of Arkham or Assassins Creed.

I really really enjoyed this game - once I got into it. At the beginning it's really tough but as your Character builds his skills things get really fun. I loved the WarChief system. Just keep in mind the end of the game is quite easy and not all that tough, that said this actually makes a lot of sense due to all the building you've done throughout the game.

Great game. I was skeptical because of all the comparisons to assassin's creed but Shadow of Mordor is a triumph of its own. The combat is similar to the arkham series, which is a good thing, and the game encourages you to take a different approach to every situation. The nemesis system is my favorite part of the game, it makes every fight and mission feel unique and purposeful.

The game is great because combine the best things of two games like Assassin's Creed and Batman's games. The history is great and graphically is awesome. The first problem of this game is the amount of movements that the character has and the game is not to short but no to large that one player can expect in a single player game.

It's a little too sandbox-ey for its own sake, but the game is an expertly executed combination of Batman:Arkham Asylum's combat and Assassin's Creed's climbing/open-world style gameplay. The graphics are amazing, the voice acting is impressive, and the music is competent. Loved it as a whole.

This is the best Assassins Creed game i've ever played!! But with all seriousness this game was really fun. Only about 15 hours of main story missions but still fun. The VO was great and the music was good. The first half was slow to pick up but once the second act kicked in. It was great. Fans of true lore will be very disappointed.

I had not played the Batman games - But will go play Arkham City now because I have really enjoyed the combat in this game. The mechanics are solid and enjoyable and the progress system is rewarding and well paced. However imo the rewards for side missions are lacking (skins, custom runes - not seen anything like that yet). The main negatives with this game to me are that the maps could be bigger / more varied (although in this age we are spoilt and many games have maps that are far far too big for my tastes) and the game also lacks variety. However that's a criticism you can level at most games. At least this game is very good at what it does at its core !! Also given how big the LOT cannon seems to be even in the films, It would have been nice to have a few more creatures, some missions as the Elven lord (just one taster included free then the rest in DLC would have been great) So yeah, all in all a really enjoyable game that can easily go up a point with some original DLC, As many have pointed out the subject matter could also be used to elevate this game if they dare to tackle it a little bit more. To Talions Credit he does at least pause for thought....before bending thousands of Orcs to his will to suit his own ends ! [I also really liked all the characters in this. They all seemed to have personalities and motives and were well acted etc ] 8.5 out of 10 Expand
