There's no two ways about it. I absolutely LOVE this game! I've only been playing for about 3 hours but I have to work tomorrow yet I cannot stop playing Shadow of Mordor. I love everything about this game and gladly look forward to sinking several hours into it.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a very fun game. The combat is addicting and balanced, allowing you to feel at times invincible and at other times completely overwhelmed. It is rarely unfair or frustrating, but you can easily get in over your head if you try to take on too much too early.

Mordor takes the gameplay of the Batman: Arkham series and steps it up a notch. While it is a bit more forgiving than Arkham (you can press Counter at any time to cancel your current action, as opposed to being trapped into an attack once you start it) it is more challenging from the onset. Unlike Arkham, you can't just dive into a horde of men and start kicking ass. In the early onset, stealth is highly recommended as you will get overwhelmed. Where Arkham added new gadgets that added some depth to the gameplay, Mordor adds skills that are almost a necessity to survive, which I found far more rewarding.

The story is fairly good, though I feel they settled for this instead of pushing for fantastic. The voice acting is superb, and I have a feeling that is why I felt emotionally vested in the experience. Like many games released these days, the story feels like it was cut short in favor of hitting a launch date. There are hints of backstory that are never fleshed out, enemies whose motives are almost entirely left to speculation, and the boss fights for the Tower and the Black Hand were an absolute wasted opportunity. There also wasn't much behind Talion discovering he was a resurrected with powers. He came to terms with it almost immediately "I'm cursed? How do I break this curse? Okay lets go then."

The character models are very good, and I for one was very impressed with how varied the enemies looked. While their actions and motives were almost all the exact same, I did appreciate having to approach enemies in a different way to take them out, especially later in the game when enemies become immune to most things that aren't their weakness.

The world is pretty, but after the first few hours I couldn't help but feel that it was utterly abandoned. I understand this is Mordor, but nothing but plains, ruins and Uruk strongholds loses appeal rather quickly. There are Outcast hideouts and Queen Marwen's stronghold, but these are only able to be visited in cutscenes. I feel that the game would have been greatly improved by being able to walk the streets of a city, allowing some respite from the near constant combat of the rest of the world.

I'm not a huge Tolkien fantatic, but even I knew that this game basically threw out the lore book and just did its own thing. That's okay, I suppose, but considering this is one of the most beloved fantasies of all time I'm surprised there wasn't more care taken to stick to canon.

As for my personal rating, I'm giving this a firm 8 out of 10. This is, in my opinion, worth owning though depending on how much you enjoy the genre you may want to wait for a price cut.

SoM's combat systemOverall, us gamers have never really gotten a Lord of the Rings game that has truly blown us away in the best ways. If you have been in a coma waiting for one like that, WAKE UP. NOW. IT'S HERE. Middle-Earth Shadow of Mordor (SoM) is an amazing experience that should not be overlooked. It will definitely be in my Top 10 games for the year. Let's start with gameplay. SoM's combat system takes inspiration from games like Rocksteady's Batman games, but as its own, it is a damned good one. You will slash, shoot (arrows), throw (daggers), decapitate, and other awesome attack your devastating way through orcs. Early in the game, you will unlock executions, and to use them, you must get to a certain number in your combo. They are extremely satisfying with their brutal gore, and I always loved to see it happen. All the other combat animations were also spot-on. The story follows Talion as his family is murdered right at the beginning along with him, but he is risen by the wraith he will team up with. The story does get slighly deeper from there. In my opinion, the campaign missions definitely aren't the most enjoyable part of the game, but they were fun. The REAL entertainment is the nemesis system. To unlock more tiers in the skill tree, which also has neat and cool upgrades, you must gain power points. To get these, you must take down orc captains. The nemesis system has an interesting hierarchy that compels you to go out and take down these powerful beasts. With the nemesis system, every single death feels meaningful, so it rarely feels frustrating (more on that later). Here are the many outcomes of death: captain gets promoted, new captain is brought into the mix, one captain takes another captain down, and many more. I adored this nemesis system in every way. The graphics are very good and fit the universe of LotR. Early in the game, it can get occasionally frustrating. Another flaw I noticed is that the areas or environments aren't exactly unique, even though the second area of the game is slightly cool. Come on, this is LotR here. SoM is pure gaming entertainment to the fullest. It is worth at full price. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A surprisingly good "Ubisoft-open-world-style" game in the Middle Earth setting.
Nice Batman like combat system that getting way too easy at the second half of the game because of different skills and runes.
Also the "Wraith Stun" attack (B) is too powerful and most ork bosses get down in less then a minute after three combos.

Nevertheless the fighting is quite entertaining thanks to the excellent animations, the badass-swagger-ork-bosses and the final decapitation of them.

    badass-swagger-ork-bosses?
yeah, the first time you face a "Warchief" surrounded by his loyal "Captain" and "Grunt" coming on stage in a slowmotion with his own war choir repeatedly shouting his name - you know **** is getting real.
The new "Nemesis" system with the three different rankings plus personal ork level is a quite interesting feature.
Its a big atmosphere bonus and the first time you get right in the social environment of the orks.
So the ork leaders are permanently fighting against their selfs to become a warchief.
The player is able to interrupt or manipulate those fights but sadly this whole nemesis system doesnt nearly reach its full potential.
Thats a real shame because you can force bosses to work for you in the second half of the game and help him to rank up.
But in the end its just some exp bonus.
An example: a friend of mine only killed 8 warchiefs and controlled the 5 needed warchiefs to continue story in his whole playthrough.
Myself killed 29 and i captured every warchief and grunt in the second map and it didn't change a thing in economics or game world.
But I had still a lot of fun with the system.

Story is way too short, and the game ends when you think its growing momentum - but again i had a lot of fun and you can easily spend 30 hours when you also look for the collectibles or do the short fighting side missions (dagger sneak / sword fight / bow shoot)

Graphics are great and sound is epic without an excuse. Nothing more to say about that.

Neither is the pakour climbing as good as in assassins creed nor is the fighting as solid and challanging as in Batman but the control of Shadow of Mordor fits good.

I dont like the fact the game is getting too easy in the end and the nemesis system could be a lot bigger.
(own a area and get ressources and defend it in a big battle with 30vs30 orks and stuff like that)

8/10 for a fun ork shredder that missed the full potential to be more than assassins creed middle earth.

This game is awesome. It's like a perfect mixture of Batman latest games, inFamous and AC series.
There are a lot of quests, achievements, skills, etc. A lot of things to do, all different and non-repetitive imo.
The combat gameplay is awesome, quite similar to Batman's but better for me thanks to brutal executions and sound FX.
    Totally recommended :D

Depending on the ending (i'll let u know) i might even say it's Witcher good (although the witcher's story is far more expansive and emotional, and the only game i've ever seen where the romance and eros isn't...just frkn ridiculous) and that's high praise.

If i HAD to make a complaint, it would be that they didn't take their lore from the Silmarillion. No one has ever made the Sil' palatable to a mass media market, probably because it's not so much a collection of stories as it is a collection of grand historical essays about a fictional world, but that's precisely why it's absolutely perfect for an action/rpg videogame.

Hell, a well executed Silmarillion game might even make hordes of new gamers, the way The Legend of Zelda, FF7, or Oblivion did. Some experiences are just...medium transcendent. They show non-gamers, in a clear and unimpeachable way that video games have grown WAY past whatever they previously believed games to be.

Kinda like the first time your mom saw a back-up parking camera in a car. :) "zOMFGBs, i don't hafta turn around!"

Tolkeinian scholars and hXc Middle Earth fans, even those without a passing interest in videogames, would be absolutely floored to see that a full-blood Silmarillion game is even possible.

Granted, where Shadow of Mordor is one game, the Silmarillion would probably have to be a trilogy, at minimum. But hey, many of gaming's best stories come in 3's.

The combat is similar to the arkham series, which is a good thing, and the game encourages you to take a different approach to every situation. When you simultaneously combine superb button mashing and stealth combat set in a gratuitously violent version of Middle Earth, it’s going to be tough for me not to fall in love with that game. Shadow of Mordor delivers as one of the best games of the year.

    WHAT THE GAME DOES WELL
The game chains together stealth, hand-to-hand and long range attacks to combine fast, fun and seamless button mashing action as good as any game I've ever played. Any of the 3 combat categories would be fun by itself, but the fact that the game pulls of all 3 unique fighting styles simultaneously is what makes it a great game. The combat flows very well (similar to that in the Arkham Batman series) and while the fighting can get challenging, it is never due to the stiff controls or difficult combos to execute.
The RPG system works well and reigns supreme in the realm of button mashers and will keep you feverishly invested in leveling your character up. Your abilities break down into 2 categories, Ranger and Wraith. Both ability types play well together and are essential to taking on the more and more enemies the game throws your way.
You also level up your weapons by killing Chief Uruks that appear all over the map and collecting the runes they leave when defeated. The more difficult the chief, the better the rune and the more chiefs you kill also unlocks new tiers of Abilities you can purchase.
There’s a little bit of a mini-game component called Sauron’s Army and it allows you to move Chiefs that you have turned into spies up the hierarchy to becoming a war chief. If that sounds a little confusing, that’s because it initially is. The good news is that the game does eventually walk you through exactly what you need to do and it’s a lot easier then it initially sounds. Sauron’s Army is at least something different to do in an action game and it ends up being a moderately enjoyable feature.

WHAT THE GAME DOES EVEN BETTER
One of the bad guys you can defeat in the game is named Kaka.
You can stealth kill an Uruk in the face while he visibly takes a pee.
It is a good thing for your character to consume brightly colored mushrooms and pipe weed. You know, just like in real life.

    WHAT THE GAME COULD IMPROVE
The overall story is a little disappointing especially with the LOTR/Hobbit pedigree. The story starts off in muddled and confusing fashion and does very little to pique my interest of where this tale is taking me. Combine that story with a gruff and emotionally bland protagonist and it creates a character I never get emotionally invested in and that’s a shame for a game of this stature.
While the main character is quite handy with the sword, bow and dagger, he must not have had any more time in his schedule for developing his ability to ascent buildings. Just like in the Assassins Creed series, you can scale all the buildings in the game, and also just like in the Assassins Creed series you will want to swear and throw your controller at the screen because of the sudden brain farts your character develops when he is confronted by his biggest challenge in the game, climbing. Thankfully this doesn’t happen enough during the play through to ruin the experience.
While the graphics aren’t bad, there’s also nothing amazing about them. Specifically the backgrounds leave much to be desired. On the Xbox One version I was hoping for visuals that would rival the movies, but this must be the part of Middle Earth that they refer to as “fly over country”.
    OVERALL
This game does the Action-RPG genre proud. Rarely do button mashing games feel this rewarding to play. The game easily survives its few minor issues because they never come close to affecting how fun it is to play. The best game I've played so far on Xbox One and one of the best Action RPG games ever. Shadow of Mordor is a must play and has earned the title of My Precious.

PROS: 1. Solid and fun fighting mechanics. 2. Nemesis system makes fights with bosses memorable and personal. When I got taken out by some of the Uruks I was all "Uh uh, not coo! I'm coming for you when I respawn!" Taking out the guy that killed you is so satisfying.

    3. The branding system. Making Uruks and monsters fight for you is awesome.
    4. The wide variety amongst the Uruks keeps things fresh. There are many different physical appearances and several different fighting types/units.
    5. The graphics are great. What you'd hope too see on a next-gen console. I thought the foliage in particular was well done.
    6. The story is intriguing and makes me want to delve further into the "Middle Earth" universe.
    7. There is plenty of lore included with the game.
    8. Gaining new abilities and upgrades has a satisfying pace to it. Getting the next ability/upgrade never feels impossible or too easy.

    CONS
    1. Lack of variety in prisoners and monsters, talking about the physical appearances here. You'll be liberating prisoners a lot in this game and unfortunately every prisoner looks the same which I think is a major oversight. As far as the appearances of the monsters it's the same story as the prisoners but they move around so fast that you hardly notice, but it would be great if the devs went the extra mile to change this in any new games they add to this franchise.
    2. The story develops a bit too quickly in the beginning of the game giving you no time to gain any sort of emotional connection to Talion's wife and son.
    3. Occasionally I got stuck on some ledges I should of been able to walk on. This didn't happen very often.
    4. You don't really get to fight the last two main story bosses which is a bit of a let down. I was really looking forward to a straight up fight with them but that didn't happen.
    5. The camera can work against you when fighting in narrow corridors.

For the people coming to this game thinking it's an RPG, well it isn't. There are some RPG elements in the game sure, but it's very much more of an action adventure game.

If there is a sequel in the future it would be great if the nemesis system was expanded to include monsters. Hunting down the beast that took you out would be oh so satisfying.

Every second I play this game, I'm surprised and impressed by how it feels. I think this is a must own title for anyone who is a fan of Lord of the Rings, or Action/RPGs. The only times I put this game down is when I have to go to work, or to sleep. I'm hooked.

If you like the batman games, or Assasins games... Toss in the Lore of LotR... All you get is a perfect game!

The game is wonderful. No issues with playability, and the land you are in just comes to life. Enjoy LotR fans, it is finally worth it to play a game based on the lore. (Besides the lego games)

As for replay-ability, it seems as though this game will be ever evolving and continuing to change, I have invested some solid hours into it and do not feel as though I am even close to finishing with it. It plays so smoothly, I have had no issues with frame rates or anything similar and considering that it is quite a vast world I think that's pretty impressive.

There is a couple of downsides though, for example the game seemed to get stupidly hard, very quickly. This isn't exactly a problem because the nemesis system (which is down right awesome) means that the enemies you are fighting constantly change.. So should one absolutely tear you apart, a new gap will be formed with a slightly easier enemy who you can go and charge after. And don't forget, running away is definitely the best option in some cases. But, sometimes I have noticed that the AI seem a little.. stupid. Now I know that they are Orcs etc but sometimes they do not notice you from a mere few yards away.. Obviously, Not a game-breaking problem though.

All in all, this has to be my favourite release on Next-Gen so far. I was so excited to pick up this game and it has duly delivered on everything it claimed to be, if not surpassed what I was expecting.

The nemesis system makes this game. It feels like a very nice mash-up of Assassin's Creed and Batman but it wasn't until I got sloppy and got myself killed a couple times that I was able to really appreciate the unique experience here. After being killed by a lowly archer who ranked up by killing me, I immediately made a beeline for him. Bad idea. He killed me again and now is even tougher. I realize I need to find out his strengths and weaknesses by getting intel to avoid any more deaths but I find out the guy is a bad ass who I'm not even going near again until I find a good way to deal with him. He was just a lowly archer who I could have easily back stabbed and now I don't like him at all and there's nothing I can do about it. For now. Anyways, the game does some existing things like combat really well and adds some unique ideas that clearly took a ton of work. The map is well populated with things to do and the story is interesting enough to want to see it through. Highly recommended.

While getting a feel of the game in the beginning i attacked what i thought to be a single orc only to realize that he had friends nearby. Being new and a bit cocky i was overwhelm and said no named grunt was able to strike me in the back ending my life. Thanks to the nemesis system though thats not the last i'll see of him the grunt was then elevated in power challenging a captain for power and taking his place while i respawned. Alright time to kill the orc for revenge finding him on my map i proceeded to hunt him down little did i know however the nemesis system didn't just make him tougher it gave him special traits one of which being resistant to stealth. so as i stuck up for what i thought was an easy kill the orc blocked it and even better as our blades crossed remembered our earlier encounter bragging how he bested me. Caught unaware of his traits i was quickly killed again. The orc received another power increase and killed another higher ranking orc growing in power. Finally though careful planning and using the wraith's interrogation powers i found out this orcs weakness deathly fear of caragors mounting up i hunted him down again his earlier curses at my death now turning into sequels of fear as he swore vengeance upon me but i didnt give him the chance running him down i finished him with my blade. This is just one story in many that can be crafted with enemies remembering when you ran from them or injured them (had one even return after i thought i killed him with a large gash upon his face). I even had 4 veterans captains team up in an ambush to stop my reign of terror among their ranks. It's something that you think is too good to be true until you play it.

Shadows isn't without fault though and it makes me wish this game got a bigger budget. The graphics while good are no mean ground breaking or breathtaking while the environments look good its not something that the 360 couldn't have handled. Another issue it's no small but it's certainly not big either and minus the campaign minus there not a terrible lot to do around it. Don't get me wrong there's still plenty of side missions and collectibles i just wish there was more.

As far as combat goes it's very much like the batman games of being combo heavy. When your health goes down you'll go into a last stand to get a quick time event to try and save your life. If you save you get a tiny bit of health back fail and you die. If your hit again the quick time will be a little harder and the 3rd time you'll die.

You keep your same weapons throughout the game but you level up to get new abilities and captains drop runes to power up your weapons more powerful the enemy more powerful the rune.

The story is intriguing with you being pair with the creator of the rings i haven't quite finished it yet but i'm enjoying it enough to keep me playing even if i'm not loving it. The main missions are short and to the point but fun. I think the issue i have with the cut-scenes is more they don't go too deep into the relationship of the tailon and the wraith. You get enough to know whats going on and your never lost just feel like more could have been done.

It really is one of the best LOTR games I've played and a amazing action adventure game. This is a breakthrough game for Monolith and if rumor are true and this is the start of a new franchise this is an amazing start the Nemesis system should be renowned as a ground breaking achievement for gaming

It's a game that wears its inspiration prominently on its sleeve, and has managed to cobble key elements of other franchises together into a tasty dish of its own. The open world exploration of the Assassin's Creed franchise, the timed combo combat system from the Batman: Arkham series, mixed in with a standard set of RPG leveling systems make for a compelling and visceral experience.

The real icing on the cake though has to be the 'Nemesis System', a feature not liberally borrowed from anywhere else in gaming. You're tasked with traveling Mordor and killing Sauron's minions, Orcs and Uruk-Hai, predominately.

As you kill your way through the ranks, you'll invariably be tasked with taking down a Warchief or Captain in Sauron's dark legion. Should you succeed, a lesser Uruk-Hai will fill the vacuum, becoming a Captain or Warchief themselves and earning a title. You you be bested by an Uruk Captain and slain, they gain status amongst their peers and will both become higher level (and more difficult to slay) and recall your last encounter, taunting you with your failure.

This creates a very distinct adversarial relationship between you and a Warchief that has managed to best you a couple of times. Very rarely before in my gaming life have I wanted to kill a character in the game as much as I have a couple of the Uruk-Hai. You combine their taunts with a distinct personality and visual aesthetic, and they become targets in their own right, regardless of their bearing on the story proper.

The game receives an 8 out of 10 from me, because there have been a few AI/graphical issues in my many hours with the game so far. It's definitely got an excellent depth and immense replay value, but it does still fall short of gaming perfection.

On the whole, this is my current 'Game of the Year' contender, though I do expect it to be dethroned by something or another in the glut of Holiday releases coming down the pipe. I definitely recommend the title for fans of Middle Earth, Assassin's Creed or the Batman titles, as it combines the three into a flashy bit of swordplay and decapitated Uruk-Hai.

If you don't care for the titles referenced or the universe, and don't feel inspired by the 'Nemesis System', you'll probably be a bit more on the fence about it than I am. I do feel comfortable giving it a healthy recommendation for all other (mature) gamers.

The game allows you to be tactical and choose how you want a fight to begin, you can take out enemy's using stealth, you can pick off enemy's from afar with your bow or you can run in head on with your sword, the controls in these scenarios are all very responsive. The game has an element of free running and allows you to climb and run over roof tops, this gives more angles to approach any sort of situation from. The game is split into two different free roam areas, both which are relatively small but suit the games well. The game also contains lots of skills and upgrades and practically all of them are useful.

The game contains a new feature called the 'nemesis system', this has around 20 captains that are harder to kill than the regular enemy's, each of these enemy's have various strengths and weaknesses that you can find out by interrogating special enemies, not knowing an enemies weakness can ruin a well though out plan that you have made. Every captain that you kill will give you a rune to put on a weapon to aid you in battle and give you the edge on the enemies. All of the side quests are worth doing whether you are improving your weapons, freeing slaves or collecting artefacts that help you learn about the world around you.
The game does however have some problems, the story is by far the weakest part of the game and was quite disappointing. The game is obviously setting up a sequel. Also the game has seemingly pointless missions that are completely disconnected from the main story, there is very little character development for any of the characters and there is only one character that I can remember well other than the protagonist.
Over all the game is very impressive, there are hours of fun to be had and even with the few problems it has the game is defiantly worth picking up even if you aren't a lord of the rings fan.

My only nitpick with this game was that it would have been nice to visit some locations in middle earth. Now I know this is a game about mordor, but maybe in the next one give us some variety? There's plenty of places in middle earth we would LOVE to go. Game-play- The game play is great here and the combat is very fluid and fun, and although simplistic, there are a solid variety of skills to use during combat. The beginning and middle parts if the game feel challenging which is good but towards the end you might feel overpowered but its so fun to lob off heads it doesn't matter. Also the amount of content in the game is great with hunting/survival challenges to complete, collectibles to uncover, slaves/legends missions to do, and the pieces of the ilithin to obtain. What i love the most about the extra stuff is that the collectibles and illithin give great amount of lore to dive into for big time LOTR fans such as myself.

Story- The story was surprisingly good in this game and i found myself invested in the multiple characters within it and also as the overall plot progressed nicely and had a LOTR vibe to it. on top of that the voice acting was spot on. the only gripe i have is the ending was a let down to be honest.

Presentation- the graphics are very smooth and although they arent next gen looking graphics they don't do the game a disservice or ruin the experience. the music score is good to and featured themes that sounded like it belonged in a LOTR setting and really adds intensity to the experience

Despite I am not a big LOTR fan, I decided to try Shadow of Mordor because of the high scores it received from a lot of reviews across the Internet. If can describe it in simple terms, I would say this game is AWESOME !!!. From the gameplay, music, sound effects, graphics, to the battles and gore. This game deserves a 9.8 but I will give it a 10 because of the haters who give it a low score.

If you want a game that gives you a lot of fun, a good challenge and a great value for your money, try Shadow of Mordor, you won´t be disappointed.

    When Batman meets Assassins Creed
Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor is an action adventure game where you play as Talion, going after the black hand after he does something in the beginning of the game that I wont spoil…
But part of that something is killing you..
    That’s right.. youre dead… sort of…
Youre stuck in limbo and seeking revenge.. but you soon find out youre attached to Elf Lord Celebrimbor who is also after the black hand… and with his power you turn into an assassins creed fans dream…
You can hop from these towers and really any location without taking damage leap of faith style..
The game is set in an open world takes place on 2 maps
and you can unlock fast travel points on the maps by climbing towers like assassins creed..
Climbing in this game is automatic, done by just holding down a button which can make for some frustrating getaway moments during combat as expected..
not as smoth as the later installments of assassins creed has become..
but these maps are crawling with side missions power struggles and collectables…
And there is actual incentive to star aside from the main story thanks to the different skill trees and leveling system in this game..
You of course aqquire skills by leveling up from killing orcs and completing quests… this lets you unlock new skilsl in your skill tree..
But to unlock more tiers in your skill tree you need more power..
power is acquired by taking out orcs in saurans army..
The first half of the game is all about climbing your way through the orc ranks and taking out the 5 warchiefs..
you do this by grabbing orcs, enetering their brains,, and getting intel on your target..
this intel will tell you their location, their strengths, power and their weaknesses…
And once you feel youre prepared to take them down you can go into a power struggle to eliminate them..
But you have to be sure youre ready because of the games nemesis system…
the combat here is fairly simple and plays like the batman arkham games and the ps3 assassins creed games…
you can stealth kill enemies from bushes, ledges, behind, or from above.. use your bow to head shot or zip through thin air for a devastating blow.. ride in on the back of an animal or monster you’ve taimed in the wild..
or you can go in batman style countering attacks and going for annoying finishers that take 20 years to pull off and are nearly impossible to pull off outside of a main mission…
This is my biggest complaint with the entire game…
These missions to dethrone orcs are extremely frustrating because the game expects you to be able to take on 30 at a time while in the story they only ask you to deal with like 5 or 6 at a time..
The variety here is a lot like the arkham games where you eventually have to stun enemies or jump over their shields just to make things more frustrating…
but every time you go to do a ground finisher itss get broken up because it takes so long to pull off, thankfully you are eventually able to pull of moves like executions once you get a hit streak going of 8 and later 5, but this doesn’t help these encounters from feeling cheap…
if you do get knocked down,. You will.. a lot.. you have the opportunity to do a quick time event to get up again 2 or 3 times.. but eventually you will just die or if you mess up youll just die,,
And dying makes things even worse as the orc that kills you will remember you, they get promoted in the ranks, and their power ioncreases making them even harder to take care of the next time…
And then there are the collectibles and sidemissions that increase your attribvutes like health as well as open rune slots for your sword, bow, and dagger, these runes are picked up off of warchiefs and captains…
    Who also act as bodyguards…
so its important to take out a targets bodyguards before you attack them to make your encounter easier…
during the 2nd half of this 12 hours game.. you have to go through the same system..
this time however youre tasked with making your own army out of these orcs so you can challenge the black hand.. and you do this by your new ability to brand them..
Your goal is to now find a target and get them on your side..
you can either go right to a bodybuard or help your newly owed orc captain prove himself and become a bodybuard..

They need to expand the story line and make the missions have more variety, for once you level up high, all combat is essentially the same and the game gets too easy. GREAT GAME Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has to be one of the best games I have played in a long time!

I bought this on the Xbox One simply because it has the better and comfortable controller, and boy was it fun.

The gameplay is very easy to get into and once you master all the tricks and abilities everything becomes a breeze. The only thing that gets annoying is that in the beginning when you first start the game, it can be difficult to get used to the combat and mechanics. Also coming from games like Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed, the controls were hard to get used to, as they use A to run and RT to stealth. Apart from that the game is very fun indeed.

The combat system is also very good. Although can be frustrating at times as you have to plan your attacks in detail. The similarity to Batman and Assassin's Creed games is definately there. The counter popups are similar to that of the Batman games. A downside which I think should have been changed is the climbing animations are very very similar to that of the Creed games. This is why people are comparing it. Had Monolith gone with another style of climbing animations, this game would have been perfect! Still not a bad thing.

The nemesis system is very interesting, and I love how each enemy has their own voice and personality.

The storyline, although not as deep as it could have been, is still interesting. We also get to learn about the origins of the rings and see some familiar faces which is nice.

Music is also very nice. Every sound in the game feels so immersive.

Last but not least, the graphics are amazing in the game. This game truly feels like its a next-gen game! If you stand on the ground and just admire how much detail the developers put into it, you will get to appreciate it even more. From moving grass, to rain drops bouncing off your shoulders, every little details just feels so nice in the game.

And having played both PS4 and Xone verysions, I can happily say they are both the same in terms of graphics and frames. Infact the Xbox One version seemed more smoother for me. That combined with a more ergonomic controller, I would recommend the Xbox One version of the game.

In total there are 20 missions in the game. When you get to half-way in the game you get some nice powers which allow you to control other uruks. At level 19 there is a bit of annoyance in the game, as the only way to progress to the last mission you have to brand (control) 5 warchiefs. At first I was running around without knowing what to do. But then I located the Intel symbols and got intel on the remaining warchiefs, which then unlocked 4 mini-missions that you should complete. When defeating these warchiefs make sure to brand them and not kill them! This will allow you to play the last missions which I must admit are so epic its movie-like epicness!

Overall a fantastic game! Worth the purchase!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a great game and well worth the price of admission. There is enough in this game to easily push you into the 30 hour range of game play. It's addictive and hard to put down. The nemesis system adds an awesome dynamic to the "take down" genre. This game takes the best of games like Assassins Creed, Batman AA/AC/O, and Splinter Cell adds the Nemesis and creates awesome.

I don't know if the story is "middle earth" canon, but the back story of Celebrimbor (spelling) was intriguing and a lot of fun to get into some background of the Ring.

Why I gave this game a 9 and not a 10 is that the ending feels like they ran out of time and just ... ended it. The story wraps up, sure. But the last boss isn't even a fight but just a 4 click Quick Time Event. Sad... there was so much they could have done for the third act, but it was just not there. What was there was good (The Tower, The Hands Talons)... just so little of it. It really felt as if they ran out of time. That having been said, the rest of the game is so good, a weak ending was only strong enough to drop it one point.

If you are a fan of take down games you have to play this.

I had one uruk whom I had been constantly chasing across merry Mordor due to his innate capacity for retreating. By the hundredth retreat he had garnered so much power that he was now an unstoppable machine. But in the end he fell at the hand of my blade and to see his cowardly reign come crashing down after we had such a rich and lengthy rivalry was actually kinda sad - I'll never forget you, Feldush the Poet.

There's obviously some crap points to the game. The story doesn't deviate from your run-of-the mill grimdark fantasy and the characters are so stilted that you would think they were crafted from actual pine-wood. There's also not much variety in it's gameplay because while the combat is a sadists wet dream, the mechanics barely deviate from killing uruks. So if that aspect of this game doesn't interest you, then not much else will.

When I got bored of Middle Earth, I was initially disappointed and intending to give it a 7 because I guess I had expected to pull more out of it. That was until I checked my game time. Unbeknownst to me I had spent fifty hours (not in one sitting, of course) slashing uruk throats and branding future war-kings. Fifty goddamn hours! How time flies in Mordor. The fact that fifty hours passed me by without a second thought is enough to recommend a purchase - especially if you're a fan of Arkham or Assassins Creed.

Luckily, the game makes this incredibly fun. I have played for near on thirty hours, finished the campaign and most of the main side activities and can safely say the game is excellent but decreases towards the end when the power to manipulate the enemies becomes available.

An interesting concept, it actually plays off against the - as far as my gaming experience goes - nemesis system as it is too easy to reduce the difficulty massively by simply gaining control of a few powerful Orc chiefs and though the obvious argument not to do it exists, the game will be played as presented. It takes discipline from the player not to trivialise the remaining fifth and the culmination of the campaign is vastly underwhelming. The campaign as a whole leaves much to be desired with elements still being tutorialised half way through and mismatched story elements of characters introduced and thrown away without any grounding or context making them glaringly obvious as story contrivances. However the story seems nothing more than a way to develop the skills and abilities in an organic fashion to grant absolute chaotic freedom in the core gameplay.

The gameplay itself is standard timed counters, attacks, special attacks and careful manoeuvres to strategically position against enormous hoards of enemies but for me the fun came earliest when, grossly underpowered the emergence of a second or third powerful Orc chief or captain into the fight made it a case of either flee or see how long until death occurs. Usually the latter. Death itself as a purpose and regeneration is explained adding a nice degree of levity to the 'gaminess' and further allows organic development of the game world which can also occur through power struggles.

This - and the nemesis system that supports it - is easily the best element of the game, finding a particularly annoying Orc who kills you over and over again allowing his friends to power level is frustrating and engaging in equal step. The variance of enemy types and abilities in terms of traits is enough to keep it interesting and the high number of orcs constantly on screen is a joyous combat experience as they level through the ranks. The nice thing is each person will have a unique experience.

In conclusion, a great game with some small issues that lets itself down with a brief and unfulfilling story that rushes towards an underwhelming climax and a difficulty curve that is inverse to what it should be with the branding ability far too overpowered with the Orcs having no chance to break free and equally the player having limited control over how their minions handle the situation selecting at random from a rather too small suite of events without any context or sense. But despite these niggles and small complaints, the game holds attention with a reasonable sandbox and interesting environment design but crucially the one facet that everything is based upon - the combat - has been done excellently.

The game is great because combine the best things of two games like Assassin's Creed and Batman's games. The history is great and graphically is awesome. The first problem of this game is the amount of movements that the character has and the game is not to short but no to large that one player can expect in a single player game.

Just keep in mind the end of the game is quite easy and not all that tough, that said this actually makes a lot of sense due to all the building you've done throughout the game.

The mechanics are solid and enjoyable and the progress system is rewarding and well paced. However imo the rewards for side missions are lacking (skins, custom runes - not seen anything like that yet). The main negatives with this game to me are that the maps could be bigger / more varied (although in this age we are spoilt and many games have maps that are far far too big for my tastes) and the game also lacks variety. However that's a criticism you can level at most games. At least this game is very good at what it does at its core !! Also given how big the LOT cannon seems to be even in the films, It would have been nice to have a few more creatures, some missions as the Elven lord (just one taster included free then the rest in DLC would have been great) So yeah, all in all a really enjoyable game that can easily go up a point with some original DLC, As many have pointed out the subject matter could also be used to elevate this game if they dare to tackle it a little bit more. To Talions Credit he does at least pause for thought....before bending thousands of Orcs to his will to suit his own ends ! [I also really liked all the characters in this. The game places you in the footsteps of Ranger named Talion, whose family is ritually sacrificed by The Black Hand of Sauron. Talion seeks revenge gaining Wraith-like abilities from an Elf Lord of the past. While on his mission, he crosses path with Gollum who is seeking one of the Power Rings made by the elves. This prequel of LOTR packs in lots of bloody action with some stealth segments, and while it can get a tad bit repetitive, it's still a lot of fun. Along with the usual side-quests, optional challenges and scattered icons, "Mordor" also includes the Nemesis System which can be used to distribute power through the ranks of the Orc armies by strategically engaging enemies or interrupting their duels. You'll also constantly run into Orc Captains who you'll either kill or be killed by. Every time you die, their power increases making the game increasingly difficult. Like in plenty of other modern action titles, you'll gain different combat abilities as you progress which helps keep the action fresh. The engaging cutscenes, solid graphics and strong voice acting add to the cinematic flair. Overall, "Shadow of Mordor" is a solid actioner and will certainly please fans of the franchise. 8.4 out of 10. Expand

A great game! It blends things from open world classics like infamous and Assassins Creed with Arkham series like combat. The nemesis system is great. Some of the enemies really rank up into beasts that are tough to take down so you better be tactical and smart about going at them.

Incredible game, a lesson in how to do things right. It has original ideas, nice graphics, a ton of lore and a good solid plot. DLC is coming thick and fast and is well worth grabbing a season pass for. Only downside is the controls can be a bit clunky at first and the system for restoring health in my opinion is a bit lame, over than that a strong candidate for GOTY

A real surprise. The way you use orcs to fight against each other is genius, and there's a real sense of development in the game. I felt like the story could have been more captivating, and the ending felt a bit weak to me. But the amount of fun I've spent slaughtering orcs make it a must-play for me.

Shadow of Mordor has a great story, but you feel tired after killing thousands of enemies, It`s not a bad game but i expected more lord of the rings..

One of the best games ever, works smoothly. Great features GTA creators should learn how to use movement with obstacles in the game.
I expect more worlds and missions in the near future.

This is a 10 game so far.

Each world is partitioned into sections and is medium sized in whole. You are able to freely move around each word and pursue various types of quests in your own order. You can also simply freelance around exploring. The hostile NPCs will re-spawn fairly quickly meaning you never have trouble looking for a fight, but you may also run back into them if you back track through an area. You can employ stealth and frontal assault on your enemies or a mixture. The enemies do not have a very long range of sight so it is fairly easier to sneak around undetected which can seem a little unrealistic but in spite of this it is still enjoyable. The hierarchy system for the captains and warlords is likely a little simpler than you might expect however considering the limitations of today's systems it is still a very innovative and enjoyable experience to bend them to your will or acquire intelligence on other another adversary. The graphics are quite nice unless this is your first game you will likely not be blown away however they are very enjoyable and decently detailed. The different buttons and combinations of using the buttons will seem very complex and daunting at first but as you play they will become easier and more fluid in your usage of them. The story line is very good. The NPCs are very reminiscent of the game Skyrim and have lots of random voice overs that can give you something interesting to listen to as you covertly navigate a castle or roam the wild with NPCs near about. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys cinematic quality like battle sequences, open world layout of medium size, quest like system, innovation, good story line, skill systems, and non-linear game play. Great game! It looks great, It plays great, the story is interesting and keeps you wanting to play.
Combat is fun and stealth is not that hard to turn to your game style of playing. It was very easy to pick this game up and start having fun right from the start. I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a fun and easy to use hack and slash game

This is a very good game, there are bugs and issues but none that are game breaking. I found the biggest issues with the game are the camera and the ability to get Talion stuck because of either the climbing animation or simply not being able to move past a pillar because for some reason the game decided to derp out. I found the biggest issues with the game are the camera and the ability to get Talion stuck because of either the climbing animation or simply not being able to move past a pillar because for some reason the game decided to derp out. My other issue is with how the game ends and the way it plays out. I won't spoil anything in terms of story or anything, I'll just say that because of how well the rest of the story is told it just feels like a disappointment. There are other reasons why the ending was not great, but again I don't want to spoil anything. The combat and flow of the game is exactly like Assassins Creed, from the way Talion moves, climbs, attacks, and parries it all feels like Assassins Creed with a Lord of the RIngs skin on it. In no ways is that a bad thing, but in my opinion it holds the game back because of the similarity. The story of this version of Lord of the Rings is fantastic, it's well written and voice acted everyone from the main characters to the Uruks, it's all well done. I 100% this game simply because I found that all the collectibles in this game helped add to the story of Talion and Celebrimbor. Also doing all the weapons challenges is fun, and frustrating at the same time. As you get further into the challenges they get harder and one dagger mission in particular (where you have to brand archers) is a pain in the ass. I don't think the challenges add anything to the weapons, in terms of damage up or anything like that. Again the collectibles are there to help add to the story, the hunting and survivalist challenges don't give you any reward either other then a achievement / trophy. Now moving on the the fighting, simply put it's so much fun to go around and kill Uruks, whether you're sneaking up on them and cutting their throat, picking them off one by one with the bow and arrow, or charging in with your sword drawn ready to send heads flying, it's all good. One of the best things in the game is when an Uruk kills you they level up. So if they were just some run of the mill Uruk he now becomes a Captain. If a Uruk with a title kills you they move up the ladder of command all the way up to Warchief, or they level up and get stronger. The more abilities you unlock in the skills tree the better and more fun combat becomes. Overall this is a very well made game, there are a few things that hold it back from being perfect, most notably the camera and certain animations, but besides that I've had one hell of a time in Middle Earth. If you're on the fence about this game I'll say this. If you like Assassins Creed but are tired of the same old locations from that franchise give this game a go, you won't be disappointed. Last thing length of the game. I've played 32 hours finished the story, completed all the weapons challenges, all the hunting and survival challenges and found all the collectibles Expand

When your defeated by any of these enemies the individuals grow more powerful and move up in rank. I did not realize the impact to the game until I started getting killed by these enemies. The other appeal of game is the LOTR themed. From reading the books it is pretty accurate. This game is close to Assassins Creed(AC) play wise. Personally AC was boring for me after 5 hours of play. I have done 15 hours and I am still totally hooked. I actually stopped playing Destiny for this game. the game is a pleasant surprise and high recommend. Expand

The game engine is incredible!! Finally, something new and has delivery! The game does become a little slow after you master attack strategy. The upgrades of your weapons (runes) is interesting at first but you soon realize this almost has no bearing on your performance. Stick to the character upgrades and you will become unstoppable shortly into the game.

One of the most enjoyable game I've played in a long time. Probably since Skyrim, three years ago. If you are a fan of Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, The Batman Arkham series and games in general you will love this I promise you.

For the first few hours I was hooked to this games sandbox style action. Fun anc challenging gameplay along with the constant Orc ranking system as you slash your weigh to the top of the foodchain. Story really is nothing special but the only thing that I believe held this games back was the repetitive objectives.

I have been addicted to this game since I bought it. I was hoping to have some great battle with the Black Hand but *SPOILER* it ended up being a quick time event *END of SPOILER* This may be because I unlocked the entire skill tree and the special sword and knife abilities before beating the game but I imagine most people will do that. There were some low level captains that put up better and more interesting fights than any of the boss battles. This game would be a 10 if the story was more memorable and the boss fights were challenging but they aren't. Expand

It was the first game that felt Next-Gen to me, and one of the best I've played on the Xbox one so far. Incredible experience the first time through, Beautiful graphics, Non-stop action packed fun, I haven't run through it a second time, so it hasn't been pulling me to play it again. That's the only reason I'm not giving it a 10, but I would say it more of a 9.5
    P.S. The unquestioned best

Everything is great! Well most things were. Combat is fun and fluid. The brutal execution moves are always a joy. Although hard the game is still fair.... Usually. The control scheme and camera can be terrible sometimes. But other than that it's a decent game. It's proof that not all movie titles are bad.

The much talked-about Nemesis System also plays a big role in injecting personality and connecting the player to the game world.
