Let me get straight to the point (first 2 games were solid, I really enjoyed playing them on ps4):
I was looking forward to this one, however I couldn’t push myself through it:
-It feels extremely clunky and heavy, I hate it in games, moving everywhere is a chore, you character is ridiculously slow, movement feels forced, input lag when sprinting is unacceptable. Picking up ammo, weapons

-It feels extremely clunky and heavy, I hate it in games, moving everywhere is a chore, you character is ridiculously slow, movement feels forced, input lag when sprinting is unacceptable. Picking up ammo, weapons is a nightmare and doesn’t fell right. I’m not sure how to explains this, but I was getting really tired just traversing everywhere, it felt extremely monotonous. 30 fps cap also doesn’t help, maybe if you place on PC this game feels more responsive
    - MAJOR FLAW – THE GAME CRASHES ON XBOX ONE AND XBOX ONE X CONTANTLY! THIS STILL HASN”T BEEN FIXED, MY X IS ALMOST BRAND NEW BTW. In addition, if you restart the game, the loading takes FOREVER!
    - Graphics are good, really good, impressive actually, but that’s it, this game got nothing going for it apart from great graphics and atmosphere which is quite good too.
Glad I didn’t pay full price for it as the game eventually ended up on GAME PASS (coincidence?)

    The good:
    1. The story in Exodus is fantastic and I think it's narrative is the best in the series.

    2. The open world in the game was the correct direction to go in I believe and it has brought some "Fallout" feelings to the game. Almost feels like Fallout: Russia. Almost.

    3. The graphics are amazing and honestly is in my top 5 best looking games on Xbox. (Xbox One X - 4k/HDR Monitor. Might look different on other systems/TVs)

    The Bad:

    1. The mechanics. When you first start the game, you'll automatically feel tanky. The movement is just so bad, I had to try and mess with the settings to make it feel better multiple times. (I never have to do that in any game so this is saying something)

    2. Gunplay. I can't tell you how many times I aimed my scoped silenced rifle at a thug's head from 50 yards away trying to be sneaky and I'd miss my shot probably 70% of the time. I shoot point blank and the bullet goes 5 inches to the right and I get slaughtered by the pack of enemies. The guns are not good no matter how much you improve them and the aiming is just as bad.

    3. Mission Directives. There is a good/bad karma balance in this game just like there have been in the previous 2. I've never been a fan of this because you will get a non canon ending depending on what you do. To kill the people trying to kill you or not. That is the story of the game. To get a good ending, you have to not kill and be merciless to enemies that would chop your head off at first sight. I had to save my game multiple times just to get the missions right and not get spotted. I reloaded my game multiple times because the sneaky system is not good. Just my opinion as some people may enjoy that, but I feel it takes away the fun from the game. (Games are supposed to be fun)

Great game for people who have played the previous games and want to continue the story. As I said, the Metro series is a good story and hope there are movies in the future, but I feel like the game could've been so much better than what it was. It's not a game I would come back to after beating it unless a new Metro game comes out and I want to play through it one more time.

There frankly aren't any other shooters out there like this one and I love it when I get the chance to play a new one. Unfortunately, the decision to make the game open world for some of the levels has led to a ton of issues, both with the gameplay and story itself as well as the technical side of things.
First the good: the games narrative is still very good. While it losses a little focus in the open world segments, its still very well done. The combat is also very good and the weapons are very fun to use. Their look and feel is so haphazardly done, which fits the overall feel to the world. They've always done a very good job at making you feel invested in the world. This game also does give the player a good sense of what happened to the world after the end of the war, as opposed to it just being set in the original Metro itself.
However, there are some major problems with this game and the first of which is the horrific game crashing bugs that followed me everywhere I went. My game crashed at least 8 times throughout my first playthrough, and once I feel into an infinite looping bug that made me have to restart one of the extremely long open-world levels from the beginning. The load times are absolutely awful too. Loading into one of the open-world levels took me almost 5 minutes each time it happened and I was playing on a One X. It's frankly inexcusable because the game crashed so much I was loading levels quite a bit and it was so frustrating to know that everytime I turned the game on, I might as well went to make some food because it was going to take so long to load into the game.
Technical issues aside, the open-world stuff makes no sense for this series and for the narrative it was trying to tell. The open world stuff itself was not done very well at all. It felt extremely linear in where it wanted you to go at all times. It never really gave you the motivation to just go off and explore because the enemies are notoriously difficult to deal with and supplies are very hard to come by and the side quests were very few and far between. It felt necessary to complete all the side quests, and you have too to get the "good" ending, but there really wasn't enough to justify the size of some of the maps when you don't have to visit the majority of the places on it. The game is truly at its best when the in-between chapters happen that were very reminiscent of the first two games.
Metro Exodus is easily the worst game in the Metro franchise so far. The strong narrative and storyline takes a major hit when having to deal with this open-world stuff that it was clearly not designed around in the first place. That's not even considering the MASSIVE bugs that plague the game right now. The story was designed to go back and play through it again after you beat it, but my motivation to play such a bug ridden game again is almost null at this point. Without the bugs, I'd have given this game a solid 7. With the bugs that make it almost unplayable, I would tell everyone to stay far away from this until its fixed. You just never know when the game will decide to stop working on you completely.

The worst Metro. I feel like it is an approach to STALKER but it a poor one. The semi-open world only means you go to buildings looking for equipment improvements. The world is beautiful but you don't have a reason to explore appart from what I said earlier. The atmosphere is great in the night ( sometimes during the day, but it gets much better when everything is dark). So many BUGS :The worst Metro. The world is beautiful but you don't have a reason to explore appart from what I said earlier. The atmosphere is great in the night ( sometimes during the day, but it gets much better when everything is dark). So many BUGS : sound bugs ( when you look at a river you can hear the water flowing, but if you are literally a meter next to it and you don't look at the river you won't hear the water // When you walk it sounds like you're running , NPC's keep talking when they are already dead...), stealth bugs ( nobody has seen you ,you've walked sooo slowly that you didn't make any noise and you are behind a wall... but NPC's turn out to be Superman and can see through surfaces), texture loading bugs... and the ridiculously long loadings... The face animations look like last generation's, the chemistry and mechanical components are broken mechanics... you never run out of aid kits or ammunition.
People talk about the last level like it was the most tense level ever made and I think it's a laugh compared to the librarian's level in Metro 2033 ( I think they tried to use the same mechanics here but making the gorillas blinded).
The ending doesn't feel like a good one for this saga, which I won't discuss, it's my opinion.
The only good thing I can say is that the atmosphere is perfect sometimes, but it's truly the only good thing in this game.
Metro 2033 was a 9 , Last Light a 10, but this one isn't even the half of those two...
I feel like 4A GAMES had to rush to make this videogame, they had more employees and money... but less talent with this game.
I loved this company, now I doubt about them.
I'm really sorry, I can only pass it, a 5.

Game mechanics that keep you on your toes and thinking about the best approach to various situations. This is not to say that the game is without flaws. While Metro Exodus released in a good state it still had various bugs and glitches, that while not game breaking were at times annoying and immersion breaking. Floating cans, clothing clipping and npc's getting stuck running into walls. Not to mention just some overall design elements like how clunky it looks when humanimals (ghoulish creatures) would run when on all fours or how weird the main characters shadow looks when walking. These both are examples of little details that set the game back. However it is little details that can take a game from great to only good.

The linear gameplay style of this game’s predecessors suited them perfectly, allowing you to take in the great story as well as the enjoyable combat and environments. Metro Exodus however feels like a bad mix between the previous games and an attempt at an open world. The main issue with this, is that the open world feels really lacklustre at times, with the game developers opting for multiple small open world areas, instead of one large Bethesda style map.

The first playthrough however is very enjoyable, and fans of the series will enjoy the return of many characters that they haven't interacted with in years. Metro Exodus also expands on the first two games 'karma' system, effecting many scenarios throughout the game, as well as the way in which people interact with you, instead of just effecting the games ending. The games story is actually pretty solid, which keeps you invested in many of the characters. While trying to stay vague about the details, Metro Exodus involves the crew moving from these areas via the ‘aurora’, a large rail freight transport train, this however feels underutilised at times, with the player having no involvement in choices involving the train or its crew.

It should be noted that any subsequent playthroughs for the achievement hunters or anyone wanting to experience alternate endings will begin to become frustrating, with how often the game makes you watch long, un skippable and sometimes boring cutscenes or set pieces, with only the starting cutscene being skippable. This begins to kill the games pace, and drags it out much longer than it really is. As well as some of the chapters feeling overly slow, such as the 'Dead City' level. This becomes even more frustrating with the often ridicules loading scenes, especially when loading the game up from the main menu.

Movement can also sometimes feel clunky and slow, especially when trying to stealth your way through a bandit camp. A big positive however is how good the guns actually feel, unlike some games where the guns feel weak and fake, these feel powerful and real. The weapon customization is as good as you could ask for, however they seem to have failed at bringing in any new unique weapons, and a lot of the weapon customizations are reused from previous instalments. I feel a few more new weapons wouldn't have gone a miss.

Summary: Any fan of the series should pick this game up and experience very possibly the last Metro game, however anyone who isn't familiar with the series should probably give it a miss, or wait for a sale to bring the price down.

In terms of narrative, the game is a step up from the previous ones, with a genuinely engaging story built around solid characters that appear to share meaningful relationships. The gritty survival elements and concern for supplies maintain engagement at even the simplest of moments. The variety in locations, and expansive level design display the ambition of its developers.

The developers ambition also results in some problems however. The open world level design is a contradiction to the game's best moment, which in my opinion, are found in its more linear section. The game is a far more immersive and tense in these sections. In the end, the game is plagued by bugs, and at times, awkward gameplay moments that ruin the otherwise immersive experience because of the expansive level designs. Also, the choice to have a silent protagonist who also acts as the narrative is still strange to me.

There are some genuinely memorable moments, and i almost want to play through again, but in the end, the game offers frustration as much as it offers satisfying gameplay. Good game, but not quite what i had hoped.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The plots of the first two Metro games concern one particular species of monster: The Dark Ones. Unfortunately, this plot element has been dropped in Exodus. In the new game, Artyom and his wife discover that there are still survivors outside of Moscow, which had previously gone unnoticed. Artyom and his friends are then more or less forced to settle somewhere else, far away from Moscow. Because the plot is almost completely disconnected from the first two games, you don’t need to play them before playing Exodus.

What bothers me the most about Exodus’ narrative is its opening chapters. There is usually only one path forward, and that path conveniently leads to the location Artyom was looking for, even if he doesn’t know where that is. For the remainder, the story is simple to follow and very enjoyable. In addition to the overarching story of moving someplace else, each chapter also serves as its own mini-story, with a satisfying build up and conclusion.

Most important characters are introduced for the first time in this game as Artyom’s close friends. These will seem to have come out of nowhere if you’ve been following Artyom’s storyline, but that shouldn’t be a problem otherwise. Characters have long, in-depth conversations as you’re traveling from location to location, and about half undergo some kind of character development. Every character in the crew feels alive, like they're living their own story. Considering how large Artyom’s crew is, that’s impressive.

The inclusion of three open world levels is the thing I was most worried about. As it turns out, I was right to be worried. The open world levels kill the unique atmosphere that the other Metro games had. Monsters are no longer scary, because you can see them coming from tens of meters away. The feeling of claustrophobia is no more. In the older Metro games, downtime only occurred in the metro stations where humans lived. Here it occurs too often as you can safely cover large distances in a vehicle. This makes the open world sections feel boring and uneventful. Fortunately boredom is not a problem in the last open world, due to its slightly better design. Apart from the three open world levels, the level design stays true to the series’ roots. The game is full of tunnel-crawling fun.

The final problem that I had with the game was probably the biggest. Previous Metro games offered a good and a bad ending. This was based on the things you’d explored. For instance, listening to voices from the past in a certain level would get you closer to the good ending. Exodus still has two endings, but here it is based on whether you spared enemies in the open worlds’ story missions. This change is a real shame in my opinion, because it eliminates the incentive to explore; something that the open world levels are lacking in.

Ending on a positive note, I have to praise the aesthetics of the game. Some of the music tracks from the game (e.g. Exodus and Premonition) are amazing to listen to even if you decide not to play the game. The game looks absolutely stunning, with its varied environments, amazing lighting and realistic gas mask and gun wear. There’s also a photo mode to take full advantage of it, which shows that the developers had full confidence in this part of the game holding up.

All in all, I think this game is definitely not as good as Metro 2033 or Metro: Last Light due to missteps in innovation. However, Exodus is still a worthy play if you’re a fan of the Metro series, story-heavy first person shooters, or subtle horror. I’d recommend picking this game up in a sale or when its price drops.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

A good, old-fashion FPS game that is very beautiful. One has to keep in mind that this game was made by a very small studio and is therefore bound to have some glaring problems. Metro is indeed not the most technically advanced game out there, but i commend the developers for producing such a solid FPS experience. The game has a fairly captivating story -- altough sometimes it was a bit cringy -- and beautiful graphics. And while the gameplay is a bit clunky, and the AI seemingly retarded, the gameplay generally holds up in most situations without them causing any major problems. A pretty good bang for your buck. Decided to play with the original Russian language voice acting. First: people dont talk like that in real life. Second: acting is horrocious. Surely, there is a lot of effort invested in the game, and a lot of times I did enjoy it, but the pace is not perfect and the game feels really slow sometimes. Definitely could be a better experience.

I am not a Metro fan.
I have not read any book, however I did play all the games.

Also played the expansions, absolutely nothing to write home about, but still a nice addition to the base game.

Good game, not sure if the best in the metro saga but its worth playing. Good gameplay, great graphics, creepy setting but that fulfill their purpouse and very good characters.
7/10, recommend playing at least once.

Very disappointed in this game. I was looking forwards to it and expecting a sizeable improvement in quality over the previous games but this did not deliver. Very disappointed in this game. I was looking forwards to it and expecting a sizeable improvement in quality over the previous games but this did not deliver. The open World setting simply did not work for Metro, the game was very glitchy and quite honestly, did not look that great with the general exception of the occasional spectacular vista.

Metro games have always excelled in the darkness and looming horror of the Metro tunnels, which was only present in a couple of the game's levels (the better ones IMHO). Open World levels were much more the norm and not that exciting or interesting. I was reminded often of Fallout New Vegas (a game from 2010) in terms of graphics and general impression, but where FoNV had heavy rpg elements to bolster it, these are not present in Exodus.

Stealth was always the better way to play Metro games. If you can complete a level undetected, it is very satisfying, however stealth play is semi broken in that enemies can automagically detect your position from a non silent kill, even when you "should" have remained hidden. Alternatively, open combat is exciting, but ammunition is so scarce that this is often not a realistic approach to take.

Graphics are a minimal upgrade over the previous game, textures are poor and really not satisfactory for a current generation game. Sound is terrible, sure there are some very atmospheric sounds in the metro tunnel levels but voice effects are especially badly affected in terms of environmental modifiers (indoor echo and spacial effects being particularly awful). Game physics often produces mind-boggling effects and jitters. The world space is generally good, but I lost count of how many hovering objects i encountered, which really had me sighing in terms of how little effort had been put into quality control for the game.

Story wise, the game wastes 80% of its chapters and only gets going in the final one or two chapters. The final levels are excellent and just about saved this game from ignominy. They really do highlight everything that was great about the prior games in the series and left me wishing they had left the Open World behind and made "this" game instead.

Overall, I was very disappointed in Metro Exodus. Stick to the previous games, you are not getting anything "better" from the 2019 game over those that came before. Deep Silver really should have stuck with what made Metro games good.. the Metro!

    SRB:

The god-awful voice acting, the bugs, the slow and tiresome characters and the story. Hard pass. I lasted about 5-6 hours Great audio and graphics though.

A brilliant expansion of the Metro saga, Exodus connects sections of familiar claustrophobic, immersive horror with a beautiful semi-open world and a new twist on the fantastic and oppressive retro future vibe.

Metro Exodus may not be perfect; certain graphical inconsistencies, bugs and a flawed AI make sure of that. But a bleak post-apocalyptic world, along with a cast of memorable characters who populate it, lead to a definitive Metro experience.
