If you’re fond of the genre, and are prepared for a challenging (even frustrating) experience, Mars: Chaos Menace might be just what you’re looking for. However, the average player will almost certainly be alienated (pun!) by the staggering amount of retries it takes to make progress.

Mars Chaos Menace is too hard to recommend due to being chock-full of cheap deaths, awkward level presentation, and poor design choices. To the game’s credit, and a forefront necessity for any shmup, its handling remains fluid and responsive throughout. That, however, means next to nothing when much of the difficulty within is relayed through little more than its incompetent development. Simply put, it’s a waste of digital space.

I started playing Mars: Chaos Menace with very little knowledge about the game overall. I did know it was a twin-stick shooter (one of my favorite genres) so I did have interest in the game before my time with it. Unfortunately this interest dwindled somewhat quickly while playing though, and I just ended up getting more disappointed as I progressed. Games in this genre are supposed to be rewarding, but I never got that feeling from the game’s overall presentation. The gameplay lacked character and the repetitiveness became a chore to play. You also have to battle with bosses that take forever to kill and it just feels unfair because you die almost immediately even if you think you’re covered. In terms of content the game doesn’t have much for you to sink your teeth into. The overall content lacks of variety and basically frustrates you throughout. There isn’t much to saves this game in the end as the only thing that really stood out for me is that the tight controls. This however is not enough for me to give the game a recommendation. Mars: Chaos Menace just gets too much wrong and in the end there’s just too many game’s in this genre to settle. Expand
