You start the game as a Great White Shark, with a taste for carnage. Learning how to control your Shark, you wreak havoc on the local waters and get the attention of Scaly Pete, Legendary Shark Hunter. After a fierce battle, your Shark is finally defeated, but that's only the start of your game. You were actually a baby, near ready to be born into the world, as Pete kills your mother, he cuts you from inside, and you exact part of your revenge as you take on of his arms. From here you're tossed into a bayou and left to survive and grow. To grow you must eat, and the water is host to many edible animals. The game is a constant push to grow larger and acquire Evolutions. I assume the waters that you travel are host to the wild evolutions you gain throughout the game, as some are seriously polluted, and some toxic with nuclear waste. You gain all sorts of wild abilities from being electric to massive, sharp armor plating covering your body. There are Grottos scattered around the various maps, these are safe havens serving as a retreat, and home to your shark, and are the only place you can change evolutions and skills. Once you make it to open waters, then the true fun begins. The more havoc you create with humans the higher your infamy level gets, and this will bring the shark hunters coming until only one arm is left to catch you, Scaly Pete's. Great fun, and loaded with things to find, those who enjoy a bit of carnage will love Maneater! Expand

I love the narration throughout too, it’s like you are in the middle of a TV show but from the perspective of the shark, very unique. The graphics are good as well and I’ve had no frame rate issues, also I haven’t ran into any bugs so far. I wish there was a stat section where it showed how many of each fish and enemy you’ve eaten and how many deaths you have and what killed you, I think that would be cool and I don’t think it’s gonna be the longest game ever, but it’s only $40 so I wasn’t expecting it to be. I hope this game does well so they can expand on it with DLC like multiplayer perhaps. I haven’t completed the game yet, but after playing for 4 hours last night I feel like I can safely recommend this game to everyone. There are plenty of $60 games I’ve bought and not had even close to as much fun as I’ve had already playing this game. Expand

Yes this one is pretty basic but what a fun game to play. One of my favorites this year. The humor graphics and gameplay are very good. Next to that you want to continue playing and evolving. I’m rooting for dlc (quick)

It's a great game when working, has some flaws but I can't fault the fun factor. I genuinely love the game when it's working.

HOWEVER it's currently overheating consoles to the point they shutdown (Xbox One S/X & PS4 Pro) meaning many people can't play at the moment. There's also a save corruption issue that has resulted in many players getting near the end but having to restart. No ETA

A revenge story that is told through a reality tv style…
here you swim the swamps and oceans on your quest to become a mega shark.. and really this is just a game about dumb fun,
eating other animals, battling your way up the food chain, completing quests and finding collectables to progress through the story…
And again this is just a dumb fun game.. it’s a nice distraction.. as maneater overall is pretty repetitive and tedious after a while… a game that’s more fun with breaks in between a new rigion… I never really found the exploration to be fun or even aquring new skills or leveling up the different equippable upgrades.. this game is simply swim and either take on a hunted animal in that region, take on an apex animal which is a regions boss fights, do some population control or eat some humans… rinse repeat all the way til the end of the game..
Maneater is its most special during its first few hours as youre flaing with all the cool things you can do.. hopping on shore to snack on some human flesh.. antagonizing bounty hunters to come out and play so you can eat them and aquire a new upgradable item to increase your stains or gain a new ability… all of this is a blast… but it remains a blast to the past afterwards as maneater doesn’t really do much to keep you entertained beyond those first few hours..
eventually it just feels like a map cleaning game..
Ultimately though maneater is fun distraction… despite the tedium I thankfully had a revenge story pulling me through, and a progression system that actually felt like It mattered..
    I give maneater
    a 7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So....Maneater (Played on Xbox One X)

Of all the games I've been looking forward to come out this year, Maneater was the one highest on my radar. I love sharks (and shark movies, including the really bad ones lol) and I played the hell out of Jaws Unleashed in my youth so I was REALLY looking forward to this release.

    Did it disappoint? NOPE!

This game is absolutely fantastic. Literally could not put it down. Finished it in one 12 hour play session when it came out last week and got 100% completion in about an hour or two the next day, so overall played 14 hours...and hell, I still play my 100% complete savefile to just cruise around the ocean eating anything in my path, it's THAT addicting and Zen inducing to me.

The story is a lovely spin on the killer shark plot, using a Deadliest Catch/River Monsters style TV Show as a narrative device (the "show" is called Shark Hunters vs Maneaters), with a revenge plot woven in between the player shark and the games antagonist, Scaley Pete. Nothing award worthy, but certainly very entertaining (Certainly a better revenge plot than a certain AAA title)

Graphics are quite nice for the most part. The surface of the water and human models could've used some more time in the oven, but everything else looks fantastic, especially the models of the player shark and the Apex Predator bosses. Now, as for the meat and potatoes of the game, THIS is where the game truly shines. You start the game as a little baby level 1 pup and you work your way through 8 locations of a fictional Gulf Coast city called Port Clovis until you become a level 30 Megashark. You go from a swampy Bayou, to an overly littered and polluted lake, to a canal filled golf course/luxury home complex, to the open ocean and more. You battle/eat sea creatures and people go gain nutrients for upgrades and gain xp to grow. You also have the typical open world grindy bits like landmark collectibles, sidequests that require eating a certain creature and/or a certain amount of people, XP filled "nutrient caches" and more. Sure, it's grindy, but so was Spider-Man PS4's open world and I loved that game, too.

Combat is very fun, if a bit simple. You have a few basic attacks ranging from a lunge/ram (that only counts as an attack on boats if I recall correctly), to a tail whip (which you can use in tandem with holding something in your mouth to "whipshot" animals/people at other enemies like a projectile) to your basic bite (and when you hold something in your mouth you can shake the right stick to thrash your prey like a proper shark). The game uses a soft lock-on system that locks onto enemies as long as the camera is reasonably centered on your target. Many people have problems with this lock on system, but I haven't had much difficulty adjusting. Really all you gotta do is practice good camera control to keep your enemy in your sights and you should be just fine.

Now, when you eat one too many people (or destroy one too many boats, whichever comes first) you trigger your "threat level" (think wanted system from GTA) and Shark Hunters start to come after you, kill enough hunters and you gain an infamy rank and fight a named human hunter boss. Kill that boss and you get a unique evolution. Hunter fights are for the most part very fun and engaging. I literally spent hours just grinding away, killing hunters until it got too difficult for my current setup, and then I would lose the hunters and go back to the main objectives until I evolved enough to repeat the process. When you killed enough of a certain fish/marine animal (the missions being called "Population Control"), the area's Apex Predator would appear for a boss fight. These range from a Barracuda to an Alligator to other Sharks to even whales! Defeat these bad boys and you also get unique evolutions for your shark. Absolutely loved these bosses. They looked so unique compared to the "normal" versions of the same animals roaming around the game and they were a fun challenge to overcome!

All this praise, but do I have any issues? Of course, but they're mostly technical ones. Not nearly as bad as other less fortunate players, but this game IS rather glitchy, that much is true. Ran into a few game crashes here and there (thankfully I didn't lose any progress as some players have reported happening after crashes), and there would be times when I died and respawned and I would restart at the very beginning of the game's tutorial (though I would "fix" it by going back to the main menu and hitting "continue"). It also makes my Xbox scream like a banshee occasionally, though thankfully my Xbox hasn't overheated from the game yet, as I've seen reports by some players happening.

Overall, technical issues aside, this game did NOT disappoint in the least bit. I highly recommend this game for anyone who loves sharks, monster movies, open world sandboxes where you can cause chaos, and just plain fun games in general. Check it out!!

Level design is good and accommodates the completionist gamers style. With a little higher budget, this game could have done some truly great things. Story is what it is. We knew this was never going to be a serious game... you're a shark. The only performance issues I have had is frame rate issues above water when taking on a LOT of hunter boats.
All in all, this gane is just good, no thinking fun, for when you need a break from the serious stuff. I could come home drunk at 1am and happily spend an hour just munching stuff up and upgrading.

Gameplay.... now this is what let's it down but I mean sure, how much can you really do with a shark game and anyone buying this with more than 2 braincells should expect it to be repetitive i can't imagine anyone picking it up or watching a trailer and thinking "hmm there's surely more to this ". The "story" (using that loosely) is cheesey and I kind of quite like that. Its clear they wasn't trying to make a serious game which alleviates some discrepancies I've seen.
Overall yes I enjoy it but maybe only a couple of hours in a sitting ill happily play it through, collect all the collectables to 100% it, but I'm sure as hell not doing it in a weekend.
As some sort of guidance on length its going to be a lot to do with how much you explore, if you go back and collect the items you couldn't get as a baby shark (do do do do do do) and how much you enjoy pissing off the shark police. Ive spent the best part of 2-3 hours per area so far and nearly completed 3 areas (except the stuff I need to collect when I get to be a daddy shark(do do do do do do))

I suppose some readers may want to know if id recommende it?
Simply ...... yes i would. Its great fun with over exaggerated killing which can provide a lot of entertainment. Its not a triple A and the game knows it, its priced accordingly and I feel I've had my moneys worth from it and still have over half the game still to go looking at the map.

For example, I wish they added more chapters after defeating Scaly Pete and allowed you to level up higher than 30 once you reach Mega. The chapters give similar tasks, which makes the game seem pretty repetitive. Also, they should have added a manual save button! There were so many times where it failed to save the game, even after swimming to a grotto or completing a task and I had to start over again.

The shark works surprisingly well as an RPG character considering that it is a blank slate personality, but also you follow the shark from a child to an adult (and beyond) which made me quite invested. Having cool armor sets really helped, as well! The bone armor is particularly bad ace.

It is also really well set up in the level variety. Starting out in the swampy bayou and moving from seaside resorts to the deep ocean is excellent. And each area having an Apex Predator boss is a cool idea! There are some boss encounters with a particular human as well, which were the only glitchy bits that I encountered. Both times the visuals cut out completely except for the HUD and I had to restart.

The only criticism that I had was that the game does get really repetitive. That's the only thing dragging it down, really, but it's a big thing. You will be doing the same missions over and over in each area (Kill 10 of this fish, hunt this target, etc.) before you can move on to the next. It gets really old quickly, especially considering that you only have three combat moves so you're mostly just swimming up to something and hitting RT over and over.

The game does have a solid story that is pretty funny in places. Particularly Chris Parnell as the narrator does an excellent job. While the game does a great job not overstaying it's welcome, it does seem like the repetitive missions could have been replaced by proper story missions to make it a better experience.

For areas you get a running commentary on how humans have treated the oceans badly and are now suffering. If it wasn't a fun game this would have been annoying.

Early on you are going to struggle to kill even the simplest of predators but by about half way through the leveling you really become overpowered. The only encounter I had any issues with were the whale apex predators because they could grab you and kill you quickly. Beyond that most everything was easy, even the named hunters.

Overall this is a fun, quick and easy game to play. Compared to open worlds and complex systems with achievements that require mutually exclusive choices this was a pleasant game to play just for fun, as all games should be.

I hope the devs create another game like this.

On line hints were largely useless as to how to go about defeating Scaly Pete and I just had to rely on trying many strategies before hitting on one that finally worked. Expand

An action where you are a shark eating anything that moves. Presented as a reality show. Sounds fun, and is fun. Granted, this game won't set the world on fire in any real way, and there are some annoying bugs in there. But by the end of the game, when my shark was a swimming tank monster, I had enjoyed myself more than enough.

12 hours for 100% after 3 hours you will do always the same things. It was fun at the beginning. Really good! But after a few hours...

There are some cool places under water. But you can't do anything with it. You can't even destroy the hot dog stands! The game looks like a game from 2010 when you look at humans for example

This is not the shark game you thought it was. Such wasted potential.
High score's for Shark Documentary style narrative and the Shark Evolution's, Low score's for practically everything else about the game. Watch my Review here : https://youtu.be/dkx2nr4fhTY

It has been slightly over 14 years since we have had a game of this style which should relatively take you about 10 hours to 100% the game. Unless you want to count the WII attempt at a jaws game where it was nothing like Jaw Unleashed. Unless you want to count the WII attempt at a jaws game where it was nothing like Jaw Unleashed. So what do these games have in common? 3rd person view with full control of a shark, they both have a dash ability, and can use their tail. This is kind of where the similarities end though, don’t get me wrong some other moves are similar but have completely different uses in either game. Jaws can do a spinning attack which is useful on some bosses, while in Maneater, that same spinning attack is a dodge mechanic.

With these out of the way I want to get into the RPG aspects of Maneater. You start as a level 1 pup right after you play as the mother who is brutality killed by a hunter. The phases you go through as you group up depends on the level. They go from teen, adult, elder, and then finally mega. Don’t get me wrong the names are good but don’t get fooled by the title of mega. You will not really be that large. The level caps off at level 30 which means you will fall short of most bosses, equal the same level of another, and fall short of a certain other underwater dwelling see monsters by about 5 levels. So the level aspect of the game can lead to some interesting encounters which may become easier over time. At the same time I do feel a bit disappointed about the level concept when you have the added change of different equip able items.

The game appears to call them “mutations” but for the most part they are a bit weird, but give added benefit depending on which you wear. The ultimate goal of the game is revenge for the death of your mother which comes with voice over from Chris Parnell. I’m not going to lie when you hear him and his random moments or when he is describing the random exportable items in the water. One you will remember from the gameplay reveal is the mob dumping bodies which is very much the same. His voice in the game is a welcome distraction to repeating the same action like most RPGs, but for some reason it feels much more repetitive then any RPG I have played before. On top of finding flying humans in the water.

No they were not in the water they were flying almost 6 feet above it. The game has some issues. While the camera getting stuck on you in tight corners making moving impossible to the game getting you stuck and unable to move between 2 pipes. Beyond that and the feeling of mid ad dashing making it feel almost impossible to do with the camera. This game does have its faults but you cannot deny its simplistic nature and the ability to just jump in it and have a chomping good time.

Ultimately I give this game a 6.2/10 it’s not a game you should buy and hold onto by any stretch of the means because there is no planned DLC at this time. If you have the opportunity to pick it up for $25 it’s a grab it before its gone kind of a deal. I bought mine new on release day for $30 with some deals from amazon for Xbox. At that price it felt about right because the $40 dollar pricing seemed to be a bit much for what this game has to offer and the glitches and issues I’ve run into.

Writers note: This game may appear hard at first but there is a technique you learn in game that will make it so easy you could probably beat it in less than 10 hours. I just didn’t learn it until near the end.

Excellent game in terms of fun being a shark. I’ve had my problems with the game but as with all games a little patience and time with it will definitely give you a fun experience. My main complaint would just be lack of end game content and very grindy missions but other than that the story is very fun as well as the Apex predators.

Surprisingly good game. Not too long. Some side missions out stay their welcome and come too repetitive but other than that the game looks and plays great and most of all is different than anything out there.

Its awesome to play as a shark and just see the shark evolve and in the end you can lay waste of everything. There is even a story in this game. Great job from the developers they

I certainly don't regret my time playing Maneater, but I am left slightly disappointed overall. The novelty wears off very quickly on almost everything presented in this game. The world is interesting enough, even beautiful at times, until you've entered the exact same deep coral cave for the 20th time, or completed yet another "Kill x amount of these fish" quest. The world is interesting enough, even beautiful at times, until you've entered the exact same deep coral cave for the 20th time, or completed yet another "Kill x amount of these fish" quest. For what is essentially an RPG, it is unfortunately quite bare-bones, especially when it comes to customisation and upgrades. There are 3 unique sets, with a handful of other individual upgrades, most of which are acquirable later on in the game when you don't even need them anymore, as there's absolutely nothing left to do once you 100% the island after about 8-10 hours of gameplay. Your overall level is maxed out at 30, which I reached after about 6 hours of gameplay, yet you continue to fight enemies up to level 60. I also encountered a significant amount of major bugs, including one where my camera would glitch inside my shark every time a new Infamy Hunter would spawn, causing me to have to die continuously in order to reset it, rather than closing my application and re-opening it as the autosave function was inconsistent to say the least. Despite all of this, I actually enjoyed my time playing it - like I said, the main issue was that it simply became way too repetitive after around 2 hours, with nothing meaningful to obtain and no post-main story content. Scaly Pete bumps my score from a 5 to 6, I thought he was a real highlight and the only thing in the game that didn't wear off on me, in fact I wanted more of him! Expand

It may only be single player, but treat it more like the Witcher than a party game: you are the shark, this is your time to rise as queen of the ocean. It may have a slightly bumpy start, as most games of this style do, but once it opens up the world is your… well, ocean. That sounds less dramatic when it’s literal.

If the idea of zoning out and basking in the serenity of being an unstoppable predator sounds appealing, then consider this an inviting summertime snack.
