Your appreciation of Mahjong Adventure DX on the Xbox will depend on two labels that should have been slapped on the box art: ‘not actually an adventure’ and ‘turns into a memory game halfway through’. In our case, the latter was a dealbreaker: it felt like going for a light stroll but being forced to stop and do push-ups. You come to Mahjong for relaxation, not mental gymnastics.

Great fit for players who love games like brain puzzles, crossword, chess, mahjong, word search, solitaire, match-3 and puzzle brain games. Develop your mind and patience and strategy skills. I’ve been playing the Mahjong games dating back to SNES and I’ve seen the formula in many different variations. Mahjong Adventure DX intrigued me more than most because of the adventure in the title, and I am a personal sucker for the matching game for a long time. As much as the removing tiles from a grid is enjoyable, it can prove old to some, and an adventure thrown in would sooth the repetition for some gamers. There’s nothing in Mahjong Adventure DX that you would classify as an adventure though. In fact, there’s possibly less choice and variation than you would find in your average Mahjong game, as there’s only a single mode and it’s linear in design. You are moving from tile-clearing puzzle to puzzle, and you’re doing them sequentially. That’s the facts but here I still found myself battling the clock for the Gold medal on every level. The power-ups or “cheats” if you will are awarded based on performance and are about as common as ammo in the original Resident Evil. None the less the challenge in the game had me coming back over and over and there’s a fair amount of levels to conquer in the “adventure”. If you are a fan of the genre or the Mahjong games in general you’re definitely going to want to pick this one up. If not you know what to expect here. As a fan of puzzle games in general I am always excited when treated to a new one on the Xbox family of consoles. If you ‘re like me you’ll no doubt enjoy the game to the fullest; if not there’s no need to add this one to your Xbox One library. Expand
