Mable and the Wood on Xbox One provides a solid game that will especially appeal to fans of Metroidvania type fun and havoc. It needs you to be skilful and inventive in your decision making, but should you be able to work with that then you will find a lot of game to be had for your buck.

Mable and the Wood is a pleasant adventure with a cleverly thought out combat system. Execution is not always perfect, and the game isn’t without its flaws however overall is still an enjoyable adventure. This is a nice little platformer where you are free to make your own decisions and choose the kind of hero you want to be.

Mable and the Wood you play as a little girl summoned by a cult in the woods. To them you are the chosen one set to rid the world of it's beasts. With that being said it's still all up to you. You can choose to kill or not kill. The entire game can be completed without destroying a enemy, but it's really tough to do so. You are a shapeshifter you can transform into many different creatures as you defeat them. That is where it makes things tough because these also can become attacks. Like your sword will follow behind you and such so if your trying to do a no kill run easy yo accidentally kill a enemy in the process. I like this development. It's a really original concept. This game was really well developed, and kind of gives me a "Zelda: Link to the Past" meets "MonsterBoy" feel.
It looks and sounds super Retro. It plays that way as well. This could have very easy been a classic back in the days of NES and SNES. everything really feels that way. The controls are really , really spot on except for sometimes when you have to make quick transforms it can be a issue. I also experienced a few issues with falling through the map. Not anything bad enough to make me put the controller down though. I like difficult games, and at times "Mable and the Woods can be more frustrating than fun. During the Lava levels I could see a lot of casual gamers throwing in the towel Trust me though it is possible, and certainly worth not giving up. It does all pay off with a really fun adventure worthy of your time. Comical NPCs, Really unique and fun bosses, original game design, and beautiful backgrounds really make Mable and the Wood worth the time and effort you invest in it.
Is it for you? If you like a challenge, and you love retro gaming I don't see how you could pass on this one. This would also be a really nice game to add to your speed running library. I really look forward to when the modern consoles are considered retro, and seeing all these little small indies resurface as speed running games. I think Mable and the Wood will be right there in that mix.

    Pros: Awesome Retro backgrounds
    Hilarious NPCs
    Fun bosses
    Original concept and developmental ideas
    Really unique areas, and beasts

Cons: Can get frustrating shape shifting quickly

Overall: 7.8 Mable and the Wood is a modern retro throwback just begging to be speed ran. It's original ideas and concepts really deliver something new and fresh in a retro looking and sounding package

You start the game being summoned into the world and set out to... well explore and kill Monsters. You are Mable, a small redhead girl with an impressive sword, catch is you can't swing it, for it's far too large for poor Mable so she simply drags it around. Her power lies in the ability to shape shift at will, but the only form you can take at first is a fairy. Mable leaves her sword behind and has the ability to fly for short periods, and then she transforms back into a little girl. During any point of this Mable has the ability to call her sword back to her hand, and it tears through anything in it's path. This is how you fight your enemies, making every encounter a puzzle. Each boss you defeat grants you a new form to transform into, allowing Mable more mobility, and fighting options. The game is challenging in a way that makes every victory feel like a victory, and most of the time you know it was you that caused your demise. Some of the combat can get frustrating as sometimes you will need to shift quickly between forms to find victory. I enjoyed this game immensely and recommend it to anyone that likes a fun platforming challenge that brings a new dimension to the Genre. Expand
