Liftoff: Drone Racing is bringing simulation drone racing to consoles without missing a beat. While Liftoff: Drone Racing has been tough for me to wrap my head around control-wise I still had fun. With more time I know the first place finishes would start rolling in but even as noob to both virtual and real life drone flying, I had a good time and I’d imagine enthusiasts and general sim racing fans would as well.

It requires specialist equipment and the local resources necessary to actually conduct a race. Liftoff: Drone Racing makes for a near-impossible game to review as it boils down to how well you like the content the game is based on or if you don't. Basically a love or hate relationship forms between each individual player. Before you can do anything in Liftoff: Drone Racing, you have to be inducted through the tutorials. LuGus Studios knows that their game is idiosyncratic, so they hold your hand a fair amount. You’re taught two control sets. The first is semi-automated, and is for the want of a better word – arcade. You can hit things and bounce off, and the drone hovers without any input. In terms of Liftoff: Drone Racing game modes, there’s a career mode that takes users through the history of drone racing, which is a nice touch as it provides a good background to the sport, and a couple of multiplayer race types to try online. One problem with Liftoff: Drone Racing is that it can cause motion sickness in susceptible players. The quick jerky movement of the camera moving on screen combined with the ability of the drone to suddenly switch direction or even flip upside down can lead to some dizziness or nausea. Recommending Liftoff: Drone Racing to anyone who doesn’t have a strong interest in the sport or drones in general is difficult. To get the most out of the game, players will have to master tricky controls and put up with potential motion sickness. If this is your type of game dive right in, if you are new to the genre I would highly suggest a great deal of practice to hone your skills before just jumping in to try to play. Full Review »
