Pursued by the royal guard and ruthless conspirators, the brothers embark on a dangerous journey that will uncover the kingdom's shameful secrets, restore the honor of the Ulmer family and change their fate forever.

Many years ago, the prince of Griffinvale fell in love with a poor girl and -- against his father's wishes -- married her. The king, unable to reconcile himself with the hopeless union, sent his son on a crusade and, in his absence, drove his young wife out of the castle. The king had counted on the fact that the prince would eventually forget about her, but his plans were ruined when his heir died in battle, and the prince's beloved wife gave birth to a child and died in confinement. After the death of his son, the king sank into mourning, and the future of the royal line was thrown into uncertainty. The royal court was overrun with ambitions and conspiracies, from which a group of people loyal to the fallen prince decided to hide his descendant. As the royal knight Edmund Ulmer, try to find the missing heir and help him regain his crown and retake the throne of Griffinvale!

As far as point-and-click adventures go, Kingmaker: Rise to the Throne only really excels on Xbox One in the hidden object area, so don’t rush to get it immediately. It’s good, but not great.

Kingmaker: Rise to the Throne brings with it the usual drawbacks that we’ve come to expect from its developer and its publisher. The game’s poor writing and its shoddy voice work makes it hard to get truly invested in the story at hand, which at best, is only mildly entertaining throughout. That said, the game’s exceptional artwork, together with its fairly creative puzzles, collectively provide the journey with its much needed grip.

There’s a great deal of atmosphere created by both the visuals and sound design and this does make the story come alive in all areas. TheThere’s a great deal of atmosphere created by both the visuals and sound design and this does make the story come alive in all areas. The story has been well written and each of the character’s offer something different which in turn keeps things interesting throughout. I found the minigames present to be a great deal of fun and I think that was mainly down to the amount of variety present in each mini-game. At times the bonus chapters in these type of game’s fail to hit the mark, but that’s not the case here because I found the bonus chapter to be very enjoyable here. Each level in the game has a great deal of detail placed into them which meant exploring the levels felt rewarding and interesting at all times. This game is a little on the short side. I enjoyed the variety present in the puzzles it would’ve been nice to have been challenged more because most puzzles are definitely too easy. I always keep an eye on Artifex Mundi releases because I love their game’s style greatly, so as you can imagine I was really looking forward to getting my hands on Kingmaker: Rise to the Throne. Thankfully once again they’ve done a wonderful job with this new addition and even though the formula is getting a little stale I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. These types of game’s focus heavily on story and puzzles and I’m pleased to say they’ve done brilliantly with both of these aspects. The story is interesting from start to finish and the accompanying art style and sound design makes the story come alive in all areas. The puzzles also feel alive as well, and whilst I would’ve liked to have been challenged more I did appreciate the amount of variety that was placed into each puzzle. I also appreciated the amount of variety present in the level design as well because this did make traversing the map that little bit more fun. At the end of the day then Kingmaker: Rise to the Throne is a fantastic addition to Artifex Mundi’s game library and if you’re a fan of these types of game’s then you will definitely enjoy what this game has to offer, I just wish that the game was a little bit longer because what’s here is great.
