Indiecalypse is a Cross-Genre collection of Mini-Games wrapped around a satirical Story. You navigate the story switching between the "Reality" of the story and the Mini-Games. The "Reality" part of the game is lost between a walking simulator and a Point-and-Click. The Mini-Games are all knock offs of different game titles and range anywhere between Guitar Hero and the Binding of Issac. This constant shift between genres keeps you on your toes, and I never knew what I was to expect next. The story is seriously dark, and the humor crept though a few shadows itself. There is a lot of crude and vulgar language, but it's all well placed, adding to the atmosphere of the game. If you can't take a few dark jokes or violence for humor, then you may want to stray from this title. If you enjoy the occasional cringe-worthy pun and constant pop culture references you can find a lot of that here too. Indiecalypse is definitely an experience, keeping a smile on my face the whole way along. This game will be enjoyed by those looking for a wild ride through videogame genres, who enjoy quite a bit of dark humor. Expand

It seems simple enough, a wacky comedic adventure game that lampoons indie games and the people who make them. While an interesting premise, it's wasted on a clumsy mess of minigames that range from difficult and glitchy, to insultingly simple, all wrapped up into a mediocre, bare bones point and click package. Every gameplay segment is a parody of a video game that may or may not still be relevant today (like hey, remember 'Shower With Your Dad Simulator!) and are mostly forgettable.

One very questionable design decision is the lack of checkpoints, the game is made up of 7 chapters, in each chapter you navigate several point and click environments and play 3-4 games, your progress only saves if you finish the chapter, so if you for some reason need to reload because the mini-game you're up to has been rendered un-beatable (thank you 'Binding of Isaac' parody) or you've had enough and want to play something better, then guess what? back to the start of the chapter for you!

The only thing more sloppy and awkward than it's gameplay is it's writing, with it's heavy reliance on shock humour and spontaneous violence, it's a tonal mess that isn't sure if it wants to commit to being a game for 'adults' or edgy 10 year olds since it's quite inconsistent with it's self censorship of course language. For a mostly surreal plot, the story makes less and less sense the more you actually dedicate thought power to it. It even goes for multiple twist endings that are not remotely earned or effective in any way.

The visuals and music are about the only good thing the game has going for it, but nowhere near good enough to distract from it's laundry list of problems. The fact that the developers are Spanish could be the reason at least behind the writing, but this isn't their first game (although funded by kickstarter) so there's no excuse for this many technical issues.

Do not buy this game, not if it's on special, not as a joke, not even for free, it'll still cost you precious time you could be spending playing a much better game, like any of the games it parodied here for example.

Indiecalypse on Xbox One tries many things, but for the most part it fails. Throughout my time with it it has regularly required restarts to fix its minigames, its humour is grating and fails to show any depth, and it only really takes a couple of hours or so to finish.
