    It’s rare to see a game that can set the tone right or make the experience feel complete or unique. Impact Winter is however a game that ticks all the right boxes and with gameplay that engages the player from the very first moments to the very last, this is one adventure that deserves plenty of praise.

    Impact Winter, as far as survival games go, remains quite accessible throughout. The time management mechanic sits well with the item and character management systems, which further bolsters the genuinely tense gameplay. Sadly, however, technical issues such as framerate inconsistency and the occasional freeze, ironically, pulls this game just shy of greatness.

    Team survival is tough: that’s what Impact Winter teaches the player. Which is fun. But the slow-paced action, added to the lack of dubbing and a badly shaped interface will surely discourage most players.

    Impact Winter can be an immersive survival game for those who are able to look past the technical issues that could possibly hurt the gameplay for some. Stepping out into The Void in order to scavenge numerous locations while trying to keep your team alive means having to brave the constant stuttering. Discovering new landmarks is addictive, but the odd loading screen slowdown along with some other grating issues threaten to overshadow what should be a tense and gripping experience.

    I’ve seen and heard mixed thoughts about Impact Winter since it released back in 2017 on the PC, but that didn’t stop me from looking forwardI’ve seen and heard mixed thoughts about Impact Winter since it released back in 2017 on the PC, but that didn’t stop me from looking forward to the game’s release on Xbox One because I quite like survival games. From the moment I started reviewing Impact Winter I realised straight away why it got mixed reviews because it gets some things right and it gets quite a few things wrong, but thankfully it got more things right than it got wrong. Obviously the most important aspect of this game is its survival elements and thankfully they’ve done a pretty good job here. The mechanics hold up really well and they do a good job of keeping you on your toes throughout. I was however expecting more depth from the survival side of the game and if you’re looking for more tasks and methods then there are better games out there for you to pursue. Thankfully though they combat the lack of depth in the survival aspect by offering you some decent quests. The quests in the game have a lot of variety going for them and that made each quest both interesting and exciting, which in turn makes you want to carry on and it also gives the game some replayability. There is a story that’s present as you make your way through the quests and sometimes it can be quite interesting, but it does have a drawback. The drawback is that there just isn’t enough of a story and this means the characters aren’t as interesting as they could’ve been, which is a shame. One thing they do make interesting though is the world in which the game takes place in. The world is full of secrets throughout and exploring the world is very fun because you don’t know what you will bump into along the way. Whilst I found the world very enjoyable you will come across a few technichal issues as you progress. None of these issues are game-breaking but there are quite a few of them and they can frustrate you which ultimately harms the immersion levels somewhat. That’s a shame because the presentation side of the game creates a lot of immersion and I really enjoyed this aspect of the game. The visuals and sound design combine together extremely well and without a doubt it gives Impact Winter a certain charm which stays with you throughout your time with the game. At the end of the day Impact Winter has many enjoyable moments for you to find and it’s a pretty decent game, but the shortcomings stop it from reaching its full potential and in the end there are better games for you to try out in the genre. Fans of the genre though will find a lot of things to satisfy them and most of its problems could be sorted out with a patch so it still does enough to get a recommendation from me.… Expand
