Ikenfell on Xbox One is a special release; one of those games that will be appreciated more in hindsight years down the line. Anyone willing to give it a chance in 2020 will find it to be one of the most unique and memorable RPGs of the year.

Ikenfell is a game of good intentions. The take on RPG combat is both satisfying and interesting with enough options, both with in-game tweaks to characters and strategy and also directly within the settings, to help tailor it to your preferences. It just drags on a bit without feeling like anything has actually really happened until its final moments. The nice variety and wholesome vibes present a lovely little world to explore and save. There are just enough little pitfalls in the story and execution that can be quite grating when I wanted to feel immersed.

Downloaded it through GamePass with no expectations, but I like turn based RPG's so why not try this one. Why would an all girl witch school where your sister has gone missing be anything more then a side story. They found a way to tell the story in such a humoristic but serious way (with running gags that they stick with) that you almost have to love it.

The battle system is quite nice. Next to the usable stats and turn based stategy's (speed vs defense for example), you can do more damage (or take less) if you time your attacks or defenses. After a while this gets a little repetitive though.

The puzzles are a bit simplistic, but a nice distraction from the battles. What's a bit strange is that all characters seem to be gay. But it doesn't feel forced and maybe also needed in a game that plays in an all girl witch school.

If you like RPG's, I highly recommend you try this beauty.

You play as Maritte, an Ordinary, unable to harness the power of magic. You've lost contact with your sister so you travel to Ikenfell, the School of Witchcraft, where your sister Safina goes to school to find it on lock down. Now with help from students and faculty that knew your sister you set out to find her. The situation surrounding her disappearance is causing issues with magic, causing reliable magics to malfunction. And Maritte finds that she can harness powerful pyromancy. The Story is rich and full of twists to roll through, and to tell you much more would be unfair. The combat takes place on a small grid, and emphasizes on proper placement, so you will find yourself moving, taking aim, cancelling your move and adjusting your move to get the proper aim. Like most RPGs the first chunk of the game is very limited, granting access to only the simplest of move sets. Later game introduces characters and abilities the start making every combat a game of chess, intricately positioning your team to keep them all from being targeted at once, but not singled out and still able to focus as a team. The small battlefield keeps combat intense and ensures you are in the action with every character every turn. A fun and unique Strategy RPG that provides a great story and fun combat system Ikenfell is a great grab for almost any RPG Fan! Expand
