I Am The Hero is a love note to retro gaming, ripped from the fuzzy memories of the developer's childhoods and seasoned with a wild passion for fighting games. I am the Hero takes elements from both the classic beat ’em up and the traditional 2D fighter. The end result makes for a slightly unusual brawler that seems especially out of place as far as its combo system is concerned. Bear with it though, because underneath its somewhat confusing design, rests an accessible, action-packed journey that’s as varied as it is stunningly detailed.

I Am the Hero isn’t the best example in the genre, but it isn’t among the worst, either. The story is forgettable, but it compensates with appealing, well-animated visuals and a varied musical score. Combat offers a galore of options, but the overall difficulty is just too low to incentivize their usage.

There is a decent amount of enemies for you to face in the game and each one has variety which in turn kept things fresh and interesting for longer. It can be fun when played on your own for me the game is at its most enjoyable when played in local co-op with friends. The combat elements work surprisingly well and I always got a satisfying feeling when chaining together decent combos to defeat the enemies. Being able to unlock different moves during your time with the game gives you a massive reason to carry on and I’m pleased to say that each move packs a punch. The story in the game isn’t up to much and there wasn’t really anything that stood out here.
Technically the game suffers with a few issues every now and then which can impact on your experience a little. I Am The Hero does a brilliant job of meshing retro offerings with a modern touch and whilst it’s not the best Beat-‘Em-Up I’ve ever played before it’s definitely one of the best I’ve played in recent years. I don’t mind admitting then that this game exceeded my expectations quite a lot and in the end it provided me with a very enjoyable time whilst keeping the repetetiveness down to a minimum. It kept the repetetiveness down by having an array of varied enemies and bosses to fight and it also had the added bonus of being able to defeat these enemies with an array of different moves. The combat on the whole then is very satisfying indeed and whilst at times it suffers with a few technichal issues every now and then you tend to forget about these issues quite quickly because of the decent combat. In terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to be getting on with and you can enjoy this game in both single player or local co-op so there is some replaybility present as well. At the end of the day then even if you only have a slight interest in the beat-’em-up genre then I fully recommend that you give I Am The Hero a go because it gets all the important aspects spot on and it remains satisfying and rewarding throughout your time with the game.
