Huntdown is a 16bit 2.5D Side-Scrolling Run and Gun. Anna Conda, John Sawyer, and Mow Man set out to try and eliminate the gang leaders under the direction of the Wolf Mother. Each character starts with their own weapon and special move, but this doesn't change gameplay a whole lot. Run and slide into cover, or dip into the background and meticulously trade bullets with you enemies. This game oozes 80's arcade from its bi-directional firing to its incredible 16bit graphics and animations. The soundtrack keeps pace with the action and would blend in smoothly with the chaotic bustle of an old arcade. The rest of the overall aesthetic is a neon edged dystopian war zone. The stages are short and fast paced but it doesn't detract from the fun. Enemies are well placed, and the AI will utilize the same environmental advantages you have. The bosses are unique, anf will pose a challenge to those not watching anf thinking. Huntdown takes everything good from its genre and adds a few new things along the way. One of the best Retro Run & Gun games to come out in a long time, add this one to your collection! Expand

I'd actually give it a 10 if you could shoot up and maybe even diagonally too, but at least up, and if there were a few more gameplay types in some of the levels just to mix things up, such as a level or two with you riding in a hover car and shooting baddies from there, or bosses that have you shooting into the screen to hit them rather than always left and right and that kind of thingI'd actually give it a 10 if you could shoot up and maybe even diagonally too, but at least up, and if there were a few more gameplay types in some of the levels just to mix things up, such as a level or two with you riding in a hover car and shooting baddies from there, or bosses that have you shooting into the screen to hit them rather than always left and right and that kind of thing (think the alternate stages in something like Contra III, just something to mix up the gameplay a tiny bit and not have it always be about running and jumping and shooting left and right for the entire game). If classic run and gun games are something that piques the interest, Huntdown is a must buy. I am glad the amazing trailer was for a fantastic game. A throwback that doesn’t reinvent the wheel but works out some of the finer kinks of the genre.

Outside of some cheap boss battle tactics that arbitrarily crank the difficulty up, Huntdown is an excellent retro styled action game. The combat is fun, brutal and often funny, the visuals and audio are top notch and each stage is just short enough to keep us feeling like we’re moving along nicely.

Huntdown on Xbox One is a game with immense personality and presentation, featuring a 2D action campaign that is built around memorable boss encounters, and plenty of them too. With so many games out at the moment it’s easy to let things slip by, but don’t let Huntdown go under your radar, lest there’s a bounty on your head for doing so.
