Hard Reset Redux

If you grew up with old-school shooters and you like a cyberpunk setting, Hard Reset: Redux deserves a try. It's quite linear and not too long, but gameplay-wise it's very enjoyable.

If you loved Hard Reset when it first released, give Redux a try, especially if you never played the DLC.

There are far worse and far cheaper games that you could buy for the cost of this game, but when you see the quality and effort that has been put into this title, you'll wonder why would you look elsewhere? Despite some faults, some flaws, and a few dings here and there, this is a quality shooter for its price.

Hard Reset Redux is a fairly competent FPS that channels the pace and tenacity of the old school shooters that inspired it. Unfortunately, there just isn’t enough meat on the bone for it to be great.

If you’re looking for some weekend entertainment and enjoy run and gun, first person shooter style games in a futuristic setting – at $15, you really can’t go wrong.

It may not be as polished or entertaining as id Software’s recent masterpiece, but Flying Wild Hog’s Hard Reset Redux still has a lot to offer, especially to those that have finished with DOOM and seek more exhilarating balls-to-the-wall action.

The big question is whether or not a game like Hard Reset Redux has a place in today's market... a market that has recently received the superb Doom. Whereas Doom took the essence of the franchise and smashed it, rather bloodily, into relevance, Hard Reset sticks firmly to its roots. There's space for both, but the old-school shooter is starting to show its age.

Hard Reset has a story which drives you forward, but ultimately it is a fun shooter where blowing stuff up is all that matters.

I wanted to love Hard Reset Redux, especially after coming off Doom, which had scratched that 90s FPS itch I have almost annually. There just isn’t enough here to satisfy. Gunplay feels weak, enemies are boring to kill, and the world wears out its welcome quickly. Nothing about this game is overly offensive to the senses, but it just never stands out from the pack either.

Hard Reset: Redux offers a fun time. After the initial hour of uninspired boredom, Hard Reset starts to feel like a good old school FPS with the fantastic lighting, vistas and effect work that start to appear the further you get into the game.

Hard Reset was a great game when it was first released in 2011. The Redux edition has a graphics overhaul and a story pacing rebalance it still retains the gameplay of the original. While that was great five years ago when old-school shooters were in decline, Hard Reset now feels somewhat dated.

If you're looking for another retro-inspired FPS to play through now that you've completed DOOM, Hard Reset Redux is a competent option. Although it's dated and doesn't compare to the polish, scope and grandeur that is present in its competitor, it continues to be a decent and challenging game.

A missed opportunity to exploit the exciting cyberpunk environment and story that was developed for it. The shooting is unsatisfactory, and the whole game has an old fashioned feel to it that doesn't sit well in comparison to other, more modern games.
