Granted I'm coming into the game from Destiny: Taken King, which still doesn't have much of a story to speak of, so that may be coloring my opinion somewhat.

The multiplayer is a mixed bag for me thus far. When I'm matched with players around my level, it's great. Sadly, much of the time I'm matched against players far better than myself (even after my first 10 placement matches), which makes for a frustrating experience. Facing off against platinum players with 200+ games under their belt when I've got 12 games under my belt and I'm a silver/borderline gold player is frustrating. Hopefully this will improve as I learn the maps and more players finish the campaign and begin entering multiplayer.

Warzone is fun, but the requisition packs are frustrating. A player that spends money on these packs can gain an advantage over one that doesn't. That should NEVER happen in any pvp game, and I frankly expected better from 343 after how much I enjoyed Halo 4 multiplayer. In addition, the requisition packs are a little confusing. Some seem to get used up after one use, while others stick around no matter how often they're used. There also isn't any way to tell if it's worth keeping duplicates of a card, or if it's better to sell them for REQ points. Does keeping multiple cards give me any benefit? Sadly, there is no way of knowing. It seems microtransactions are going to be a fact of life for gamers going forward, even when we're shelling out $60+ for a game. If Star Wars Battlefront or Call of Duty Black Ops III can offer better multiplayer without microtransactions, there won't be anything holding me to Halo 5 when they're released.

Things start with the gameplay, which is by no stretch of the imagination bad. While out of place in the franchise, the smart link/iron sight aiming fits fairly well while the booster adds an extra level of useful speed to make fights more intense, but many of Halo's unique weapons have been cast aside and replaced with forgettable alternatives (I rather miss the Brute weapons and vehicles).

The plot's a bit of a disappointment as well, despite quite a lot of potential. It assumes you're up to date on the vast majority of Halo lore which isn't necessarily bad but doesn't help anything, it certainly raised more questions for me as I've only read a handful of the books (such as how Blue Team's there). On the whole though, plot and characters are handled badly, shying away from interesting moments that could use exploring. Blue Team aren't exactly complicated, but they're far less interesting here and even Buck and the Arbiter have stepped away from what made them awesome. I've no issue with playing as Locke (and I find the people who complain about it to be rather foolish), but he's not offering much of an alternative view point on the world, he's just another numpty blundering through the game's events.

Still, the game plays well and has good multiplayer. The lack of Forge at launch is annoying but I'm looking forwards to getting my hands on it. The aesthetic (ie look) of the game isn't quite as appealing as previous entries somehow and there's bizarre pop ins/textures changing at times to keep the game at a smooth frame rate, which is at least appreciated but doesn't help it's overall presentation.

Overall, it's a solid game that's well worth looking into. Just don't expect it to be the next coming or to remember much of it by January.

I have 4 days of play time across arena and warzone. This game is fun but its rough around the edges. The number of gamemodes, particularly social playlists are lacking, still no oddball!

This game will most likely improve as time goes on, but it's a just above average Halo, nowhere near the level of Halo 2, 3 or Reach in my opinion. Hopefully 343 buckles down and continues to provide updates for this game because as it stands, it is a 60 dollar experience, but the req packs will leave you needing to spend a lot more if you aren't intending on playing tons to unlock them normally. However, it's a catch 22 because if you're playing a lot, particularly warzone, you will want more req packs.

The req pack system isn't awful, but it's clearly designed in a way to get you to spend a **** load of money to get the stuff you want, and as somebody who has been playing halo since the first one, it is an unwelcome change.

Final Thoughts: If you own an xbox one, grab it it is a solid game. If you bought an xbox one for it like I did, reconsider unless you know you have multiple friends who plan to do the same. Teammates will make or break your experience.

I've even spawned right in the reticle of an opposing team member with a sniper rifle, I kid you not. The developers decided that the default weapon would be the assault rifle (which you can't change), a pretty useless gun. Plus, I don't understand how a grenade can go off right under the feet of someone that's one shot and it not kill them. Of course I've been killed by rockets that hit the wall 15 yards away but I can't kill someone with a railgun that hit them in the feet. Halo 5 exceeded my expectations. After the MCC debacle, everyone was worried that 343 and Microsoft would screw up the Halo 5 launch too. Quite the opposite. 343 gave us a pain free launch. Quite the opposite. 343 gave us a pain free launch. I’ve seen a lot of talk that Destiny is the best shooter out right now, but it has devolved into a blatant cash grab. And the multiplayer is a laggy mess. No thanks. COD is stale, and it’s arcady, campy gameplay appeals to the bottom denominator. For gamers sick of the COD, Destiny, and Battlefield bandwagon, Halo 5 is a solid alternative.

There’s a caveat. People not versed in Halo lore will be lost playing the campaign. But I didn’t buy Halo 5 to play the campaign because it’s overrated. I purchased H5 for the multiplayer.

Will Halo fans like the campaign? Maybe. Reactions will be mixed for sure. Halo fans have been completely inconsolable since 343 took over the franchise. So I’m sure many fans will launch into “worse Halo ever” rants. The campaign is OK, but it verges on uninspiring. With the exception of franchises like Fallout, Bioshock, and Half-Life, shooters are poor mediums to tell stories. If I rated H5 on just story, my final score would be much lower. That said, it’s still better than the trash Activision throws at us.

The campaign features co-op, so friends can enjoy it together. Be warned Halo fanboys(and girls), there is no split screen. 343 announced that Halo 5 would not feature it months before launch. So this isn’t news. I’m surprised how many gamers purchased H5 not knowing this. The lack of split screen isn’t a deal breaker since a proportionally small number of people use it.

H5’s graphics are unimpressive. It suffers from screen tearing and aliasing. Shadows are jagged. Textures are low quality. Pop in’s plague environs. Visually, H5 isn’t an improvement over Halo 4 except for one big difference: Halo 5 hits 60 frames per second. All 360 versions of Halo were 30fps. Competitive games perform better at higher frames, and 343 desperately wants Halo to reemerge as the de facto gold standard for competitive console gaming. There’s no doubt that visual sacrifices were necessary to maintain that level of performance. Still, Halo 5 doesn’t look all that great. The “dynamic” adjustments 343 talks about come with big sacrifices in graphic fidelity that are evident to anyone who plays it. The lack of split screen is another sacrifice.

Despite the above, H5 runs silky smooth. From a performance perspective, H5 is the best multiplayer experience on nextgen. Hit detection is accurate and consistent. Framerates hold steady, even in larger game modes. The move to full-time dedicated servers was the right choice, and ALL developers should be making that move. But servers are only as good as the netcode, and H5 delivers there too. In comparison to all the other major fps titles on nextgen, none rival H5 in performance or hit detection.

How about multiplayer? Well, it’s good. Darn good. For players wanting a casual shooter, don’t play here. H5 is brutal and the skill gap is much wider than COD. The gripes I’ve read about gun balance, spawns, etc. are over exaggerated. Those players want to complain because they couldn’t score 30 kills a game on day one. So they blame the game, not their lack of skill and patience.

H5’s multiplayer is divided into 2 modes: Arena and Warzone. Arena is reminiscent of older Halo’s. All play is ranked play. All players start with the same weapons and abilities. Power weapons spawn at set points on the map. Controlling these points can turn the tide of every match. There’s no voting. Penalties are imposed for quitting early among other things.

Breakout is the best game mode. It combines some round-based, tactical play with player elimination. So if a player dies in a round, he can’t respawn until the next round. Old school gamers will like this mode because it relies on precision, tactics, and teamwork. COD run and gun tryhards will hate it. In fact, the ones I’ve talked to do. That’s OK, Halo 5 is for the adults.

The much hyped Warzone is OK, but AI enemies are sparse and nothing more than bullet sponges. Titanfall is still king of this style game mode. I prefer Warzone Assault which dumps the enemy AI, so it’s more like Big Team Slayer.

The REQ system allows players to purchase/earn powerups for the Warzone mode only. Perks are easy enough to earn without spending real money. Perks can’t be used in Arena.

Of course the biggest perk is free DLC!! A grossly underrated novelty by Halo fans. Since launch, 343 has already released new maps and game mode.

My verdict on H5? It’s the best game multiplayer game on Xbox One because it focuses on things that matter: Connectivity, performance, and balance. Butthurt Halo fans need to shut up. H5 may not be the prettiest car on the strip, but its mp performance is second to none. 343 showed us it’s willing to learn and delivered the most balanced, competitive multiplayer on consoles I’ve seen in years

    CAMPAIGN
-The campaign is not as advertised. The whole epic Locke hunting Chief around the galaxy and having a stand-off campaign as shown in the commercials (even suggested on the cover art!!) simply isn't the storyline.
-In fact, there's barely a storyline to admire and of what there is, like with Halo 4, it requires a knowledge of the EU to understand the background/characters which is a bad decision imo (this hampered Halo 4 too).
-Playing as Locke for 80% of the time is also something I wasn't invested in. The Master Chief IS Halo. -Ultimately it's forgettable, the first Halo campaign imo to be so. I didn't like Halo 4's campaign but at least it was quite memorable. Makes me wonder what the hell 343 have been doing for 3 years.
-Level designs, like the story, are also pretty boring/repetitive, no major set pieces to enjoy like the double scarab takedown level in Halo 3 for example. Again this is was a similar problem in 4.
-Didn't care for the squads who were pretty unintelligent AI with 0 character investment.
-(I read about all of the above before playing so I was at least prepared for the disappointment and was conscious of it as a consolation).
-Also very short, 6 hours ish, for being 15 levels long.
-It does look great visually however, very slick. Prometheans are more enjoyable to face than in Halo 4. That's honestly all I can say is good about it.

    MULTIPLAYER
-Multiplayer is much better than in 4. The Spartan abilities are a welcome addition to the series (campaign too I should add), nice and fresh idea. Good way to solve the unbalanced armour abilities in Reach and 4. -343 have separated old from new too: Old style Halo is back - balanced, same loadout, weapons around the map type gameplay in Arena. And indeed it generally does feel like the old Halo days thank goodness with the new feature of Spartan abilities fitting in nicely.
-And then Halo 4 style unbalanced craziness in Warzone, taken to the next level with REQ packs, different gun sights as an example etc. This works in Warzone because the maps are huge, AI plays a part and it's 24 players hence the in-your-face, skill based competitiveness of Arena doesn't really come into it - it's more of a social experience so I think things being unbalanced actually helps the vastness of the maps become more hectic, more varied and hence more enjoyable on a casual level. Put simply, I like it.
-I'm pretty neutral on REQ packs
-Lobbies are horrible, no gamertags visible. I didn't think lobby design could get worse than 4 but 343 somehow managed to top it.
-Maps are visually very samey, hence boring and repetitive to look at. And a mere 3 Warzone maps. Some decent layouts however, particularly to suit the new abilities.
-Armour customisation aesthetically looks slightly better than in 4, again pretty bad though compared to Reach and 3's artistic approach.
    - Very few gametypes - why on earth so few I don't know.
    - Overall I like but don't love halo 5's multiplayer. I did not like 4's.

    SUMMARY
-Ultimately with 4 and now definitely 5, Halo has become an odd parody of its past self.
-Terribly disappointing campaign - I honestly have no interest in what's to come in Halo 6. None at all.
-Multiplayer is a decent outing which I will certainly play again and more than 4 but not religiously like I did with 3 and Reach (didn't have Live for 2), it's just not polished enough overall like the latter 2.
-I truly don't think I will buy Halo 6 until at least a year or so after it comes out when it's half price and then it will only be to see what has come of the franchise, not because I really want it as a fan anymore which really saddens me.

I never did a 4 review, would probably give that 5/10 for reference. The other main series games (CE, 2, 3, Reach either a 9 or more likely a 10). For this, I'd say 5/10 for campaign, 8/10 for multiplayer (7 overall is me being generous I'd say).

The marketing was great and as a long time Halo 5 I was really looking forward to what 343 will produce. And it is here and it was kind of a let down. Now don't get me wrong the game is great but it is missing so much. Where is big team battle and infection? Griffball and the other really fun game modes? They said forge will be released in December because they want to put time into it. Why don't you release the game with everything in the package and not leave one of the most used modes in Halo history. The campaign is a let down as well. The story is mediocre and the only thing keeping me interested was the really well done cutscenes and some of the great moments that occasionally happen during the story. And the marketing did not show what the story actually is, it showed a exaggerated version of what the actual story is. The multiplayer in general is good. Breakout is a great addition to the classic Halo game modes and all of the normal Halo game modes are there apart from big team battle. Which has been replaced by Warzone, which for me alright. There are now AI on the battlefield and you have to capture bases and then destroy the enemy core. Now this is all well and good until you find out how to get weapons and vehicles. You have to open packs. And there are micro transactions now. Great one 343. And to get armor you have to get them from packs. No unlocks or anything. No rank system either. But there are some great editions to the gameplay of Halo 5. You can now stop in the air when you aim so it is easier to get enemies. And you can now aim down your sights. Overall Halo 5 is a fun game that has flaws and needs to improve. When they add forge and big team battle which they are apparently adding, then the game will get a higher score. And add infection and griffball while your at it. It's not what I was expecting but I still enjoyed it and there is room for improvement. 7.5/10 Expand

It is a good game overall, but without split-screen, which is a trope in the Halo franchise, it holds it back from being better.

    Some other points are:

    Warzone is a great addition.

Much better after BTB has been added.

    Waiting for forge

    Arena gamemodes are great overall

None of the music seems to 'fit' what you're doing. My other half was in the room while I was playing the final few missions and she commented on it despite not really paying attention. Locke is an unlikeable edge fest and his character reads like an antisocial tween's Deviantart power fantasy.

Warzone is nice. I'm not sold on the Requisition system but it's not overly intrusive and the whole thing brings back memories of chaotic Big Team Battle games on Halo 3. The scoring system is a little off, it's possible for a team to control all the bases for the entire game and still lose because the enemy was just farming AI kills, but for a bit of lighthearted fun there's nothing wrong with it.

Arena is not competitive Halo, the maps are not designed well - they're far too big for 4vs4 and I think they've been deliberately enlarged to compensate for the continued existence of sprint. It doesn't feel like an arena shooter and the playlist name just rubs it in your face.

If you like Halo and already own an Xbox One, it's probably worth your time. Absolutely do not go out and buy an Xbox just to play this game, you'll be wasting your money.

Ever since Halo Reach that has changed.
In Halo reach 343 introduced a couple of shallow uninteresting characters, barely more than mounts for guns that were if they ever said something plainly talking annoying ****

My point is since Halo Reach every new Halo had a more dumbed down story.
A believable story transported by some likeable characters is all i ask for.
But since 343 has taken the responsibility of expanding the Halo Universe this is not happening anymore.
The short film series, the recent games and now this product of marketing research are just plain dumb and this bores me.

I dont care for a group 4 posers constantly blabbering **** and raising their eyebrows called team Osiris.
Although the Team Blue characters are not really introduced to the player they are more sympathetic because they are not posing idiot ****

The gameplay is fun though. Nothing special at all, a good all level based FPS. A little to easy at times and even boring as hell sometimes (warden eternal on legendary ...).

I would recommend this game to someone who really dislikes the first Halo. Someone who only plays casually and doesn't look for a challenge.

So for all you Far Cry, CoD, Battlefield, Battlefront players out there this might be fun to you.

THERE IS NO SPLITSCREEN CO-OP. In an ill-advised effort to sell more XBOX One consoles, Microsoft has done away with Splitscreen. If you want to play the campaign with a friend, they'll need their own XBOX One with an internet connection.

The Multi-Player: To help pay for future Multi-player content, 343 and their Microsoft overlords have introduced the Requisition System. A baloney way to sell you gambling packs that only occasionally give you the weapons you need. This essentially translates into Pay-To-Win for the new Warzone mode.

The Master Chief has saved the galaxy twice and yet, when he is "absent without leave" you get special forces to hunt him down. Seriously? What kind of story is that? Characters are bare and fail to connect to players. If Locke died, I'd celebrate. If Nathan died, I'd cry.

Most of them were placed when the enemy was in the player's face, causing an instant down. The last complaint is that the campaign is not playable on split-screen. Every halo game contained a split-screen, making it fun to play when friends and family come over or something.
I know these complaints I have don't sound very big, but it makes the campaign feel more annoying and frustrating than enjoyable for most of the fights. It makes me feel as if I absolutely need to play the campaign on single-player or four-player if I were to attempt legendary.

Noticing a lot of reviews that just focus on one issue rather than taking the whole game into account, so I'll throw my opinion into the mix:

Overall, Halo 5 is a game that was over hyped. Through the hunt the truth advertisement Halo 5 hinted at being an immersive story line of questioning whether Master Chief should still be trusted even after going AWOL. Instead we got a campaign that is short in terms of story progression with minimum ties to its predecessor, Halo 4, and a multiplayer that is fun at first, but fizzles out after a few matches in Arena and Warzone.

    Campaign:
The story itself has underdeveloped characters in a drawn out game with a disappointing ending. Halo 5 has a perfect opportunity to develop Master Chief's character and introduce conflict to make Master Chief and his crew more interesting, but fails to deliver as we focus on Team Osiris whose actions have little effect on the overall story, until the ending, which results in a cliffhanger for Halo 6
Consequentially, the lack of character development for any of the characters within the fire teams made for a less engaging experience, since none of the character's history and individuality are described except through a few short dialogue sections in the latter section of the game, where it is not necessarily needed.
The story offers plenty of lore and information either through conversations in-game, in cut scenes and through hidden intel in each of the missions. However as a casual Halo Player, none of the information was worth seeking out, since it often offers irrelevant conversations that have no relevance to the plot line. Any interesting plot holes that arose as a result of Halo 4 and Spartan Ops were either anticlimactic in resolution or dismissed entirely through a one-liner given to you. The story presented as a result felt, ironically, underdeveloped to the point where it feels like Halo 5 is just providing a background for Halo 6
The environment did look amazing with no noticeable frame rate issues, and the addition of the team revival was useful, however the campaign was clearly designed for a multiplayer experience, since there are an unnecessarily large amount of enemies for a solo player, and the A.I performance is not as good as it could be, especially in close range scenarios, where all three of the supporting A.I could be taken out with a successful melee swing.
Most of the game play is repetitive and tedious, especially on higher difficulties, making the campaign seem more like a firefight mode with a few in-between sections to save your progress. There are noticable exceptions, such as either a flying segment in one mission, or other missions that allow the use of vehicles to make killing easier, and more segments that switch up the kill enemies on foot should be implemented into further games.
The reward for beating Halo 5 on legendary is not worth the time and effort, and for the most enjoyment should be played on a lower difficulty, unless you have a coordinated group of friends and a weekend to kill.

    Multiplayer:
As far as multiplayer goes, it is fun at first. However, Halo 5 multiplayer does not hold out for the long run. The Arena section offers different types of games to play, but with some playlists having randomized games can make getting commendations difficult, since you end up playing the same type of game over and over again. Also, arena maps often feel cramped, leaving little possibility for long term strategy.
War zone is essentially strongholds on a bigger map. There is minimal PVE interactions, and are either at the beginning of the match, or out of the way of where the current action is taking place.

Overall the campaign feels underdeveloped in terms of story and character design with a multiplayer driven campaign that feels more like firefight, than an innovative campaign. The campaign will overload you with mostly uninteresting lore from intel and cut scenes, and any conflict from Halo 4 was easily dismissed, leading to a Campaign focused on the wrong person, with an uninteresting story.
The multiplayer is fun at first, but there is essentially nothing to work towards, since the Req system is slow and unreliable, and matches feel repetitive and often one sided in the case of Warzone

    Recommedation:
The game is currently not worth the $75 CAN price-tag it currently has. In its current state, it's value is more likely around $30 CAN, and is likely going to go down in value as people leave for other games and eventually leave for Halo 6

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had to experience Halo 5 because I played all other Halos (except Reach).
I only care for the SP campaign because I have no will to waste my time chasing children.
My opinion of the SP campaign is simple:
    Graphics are good for an old console, so I have to congratulate them for the work here;
    Soundtrack was not as I was expecting given past ones, but it was not bad. It was good and bad, depending on the mission, but a few moments were very good;
    Gameplay was very good, meaning the handling of weapons and so forth. Still, the weapons are few; I was expecting an upgrade in number of weapons in Halo 5, obviously without removing any traditional weapon nor changing the traditional weapons too much. However, the difference between Halo 4 and Halo 5 weapons is colossal, given that the first were pathetic, to say the least;
Story is bad. Nothing in the story makes sense. The character development is non-existent.
In short, the SP is reasonable, even good at times, and the MP the same.
The game was rushed and it is obvious if you play it; plus, this is a know fact by the community. Microsoft just does not learn from their mistakes. The MCC was rushed too and it was a disaster. These guys are incapable of learning with any mistake they make, not even with other developers' mistakes. This is embarrassing.
Game verdict: 6 out of 10. Trust me, this is a very, very generous score.
Price verdict: It is just too high for this game. 70 euros? No way it deserves any more than 30 euros.
Advice: I recommend you only buy this game if you are a real fan, but even then, only if you have money to waste, otherwise you are in for a gigantic disappointment, even with the MP because of the lack of content.

Halo has always been a series packed with gripping narrative, powerful interactions with characters and a whole lot of gunplay. While 343 Industries’ Halo 5: Guardians is no different, the characters we’ve come to know and love have changed. Sadly, that may not be a good thing.

This entry in the acclaimed series puts us back into the boots of the Master Chief, Spartan John-117, and he’s hot on the trail of his AI companion Cortana after the end of Halo 4. (Spoilers, obviously.) Long story short? She’s gone crazy and he still loves her.

Master Chief has always been sort of a silent hero with a tattered past, possibly the last of his kind. But in this game, he’s got Blue Team behind him. Followers of the Halo lore will recognize this Spartan squadron from The Fall of Reach novel.

While it’s wonderful fan service to bring characters like this back, the game lacks any sort of emotional attachment for new players. Where did these guys come from? They seem to only exist so the game can have four-player online cooperative game play.

While Halo: Reach didn’t stun by any means, players were able to feel for each of their squadmates. In Halo 5, you’ll barely remember that they’re there.

On the other side of the galaxy, players take charge as Agent Jameson Locke, a level-headed Spartan soldier tasked with bringing Master Chief home after his squad goes rogue looking for Cortana.
Locke’s team is mostly faceless, but their ambiguity is carried by stellar performances from Ike Amadi as Locke and Nathan Fillion as Buck (from Halo 3: ODST).

But at the end of the day, this is still Halo. The game is fresh, polished and a blast to play.
It’s a healthy evolution of the Halo formula, with things like sprint and armor abilities carrying over from more recent entries. One new feature is iron sights for most of the weapons, which seems odd at first but turns out to be a welcome addition.

Without giving anything away, the story ends up clocking in at just over 5 1/2 hours. While the game ends with a cliffhanger, players will have plenty to check out in the game’s multiplayer suite.

Sure, this is the first Halo game to not support couch co-op, but the competitive online multiplayer mode is still ever-present.

Halo 5: Guardians is a necessary step forward, but after the next game it might be time to retire John and crew and open up the universe to new opportunities for adventure.

In all good conscience I cannot give Halo 5 a pass because of how much I love the Halo franchise. This game is a bad Halo game, the absolute worst of the series and elevates Halo 3: ODST. There are some fun times to be had in the Warzone Mode, and if I can ever finish game with a positive k/d, I'm sure I could come to love it. New players be warned, after more than two years of the Halo community honing their skills, you will be cannon fodder.

My primary gripe with Halo 5 is the campaign. Replaying the campaign solo or in co-op was a major part of the Halo experience. Halo 3 was the high water mark of the campaign, and Halo fans like me would replay just to hear the different voice lines. Halo 5 starts off badly by removing split-screen co-op. You can play co-op with buddies on-line, but this far after release that is not realistic. Playing co-op with my son at home is be a no-brainer, if 343 hadn't screwed up so badly. The campaign itself is a mediocre sprinkling of enemies and weapons between point A and point B. There is none of the pacing and fun moments that set Halo apart from other games. With the weakening of the Spartans' shields, you might as well be playing a re-skinned Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The campaign is further hurt by the decision to sideline Master Chief in favor of a new protagonist, the terrible voice acting of the new protagonist, and the cut scenes that show you moments that are much more exciting than anything you play in the game.

The multi-player is a mixed bag. It's nice to have Big Team Battle back and the 24 player Warzone is a nice idea. However, I find myself having trouble with the shooting after 3 years of Destiny. You know Destiny. It's that Bungie game with the great gameplay and terrible story. Bungie used to make Halo and I remember when Halo had great gameplay that just felt good. I feel like 343 made the gameplay worse to increase the skill gap, i.e. to make multi-player more competitive and less casual friendly. I have 3 months of Xbox Live Gold left, and that might be enough time to adjust.

Fair warning to anyone with internet in 'Murica, the game is an outlandish 100GB download. I am now one tenth of the way toward my monthly cap. I cannot see how the game is so big when the graphics are so ordinary. Some of the canyons on the Elite home world look nice, but most of the textures are smooth metal and glass that show you how much worse the art department is at 343 compared to Bungie. Maybe I've been spoiled by the likes of Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Star Wars: Battlefront. As a showpiece for the power of the Xbox One, Halo 5 is a total failure.

I want to end this review on a positive note. The Forge mode looks fantastic and the Forge maps section has more maps than I could ever hope to play. If you can wrangle the friends to play this 2 year old game, I think you could have more fun goofing around on custom Forge maps than you would have in any competitive shooter.

I feel sorry for Halo 5. If the marketing hadn't been an outright lie, if the writer hadn't pulled a Rian Johnson and completely ignored Halo cannon, character traits (important events from Halo 4 Spartan Ops), people might have had proper expectations.

As it was, it even managed to disappoint me, and I'm a fanboy. The story isn't horrible (leagues better than Anthem or Mass Effect Andromeda, Destiny, etc) but its the weakest in the franchise thanks to a writer who fumbled the ball at every opportunity.

Gameplay is very Halo with the new ability to aim down sights, boost and clamber over ledges. Great variety in locations and some really epic fights but overall a little more restrictive in level design when compared with, say, Halo Reach. The Halo sandbox is still there and you can have different encounters every time you play.

Don't care about PvP, its not why I play Halo. Warzone firefight is fun but REQ packs (MTX's) keep it from being great - Heroic level enemies with very large health pools require vehicles/special weapons... which requires REQ packs. You can earn these but there's a moderate grind to do so. It keeps a lot of people from getting hooked on the mode.

Overall good game, fun to play, great in co-op. No split screen. Marketing was nothing short of a lie and the story was a bit lackluster (they pull a "Halo 2" with this game).

The advertising for this game made it seem like it was a very story driven game, but that is not the case. For a person who has never played a Halo game before, this story can be very confusing. The campaign is very short if you play on easy or normal. Legendary difficulty is pretty fun if you play with a couple of friends, but it can get boring if no progress is made. The biggest complaint I have with the campaign is the way the AI is, it seems too artificial compared to other games. The campaign for me is a 5/10.

The multiplayer is a lot better than the campaign. Warzone is fun with friends. Custom games is a blast. Arena is ok. But the req packs are a scam, it's just another company trying to steal money from you. The multiplayer mechanics are good, and are made for a competitive play style. But the mechanics get boring after a while .

Overall, this game isn't terrible but isn't good too. The campaign is what ruined the game for me.

All these new aspects are a breath of fresh air after playing Destiny and Halo 4. The story, however, is nowhere near as interesting as Halo 3's or Reach's. And it has a bulls@# cliffhanger ending. Another thing that pissed me off about Halo 5 is that 343 ripped out split-screen! One of the main reasons people loved Halo, and 343 say, NOPE!! f@# you give me money! Nice,Microsoft. Yet another infuriating thing about this game is that there are now Micro-transactions. Yes, Micro-transactions, anyone who defends Micro-transactions are idiots. Apart from that though, Halo 5 is a step in the right direction for Halo, and I would highly recommend it if Destiny left a bad taste in your mouth. Expand

A disappointing to a beloved franchise. Halo really needs to step back and re evaluate itself. Take a hard look at itself in the mirror. It seems now they are just rehashing same stuff over and over. Still really good gunplay and multiplayer.

Kein Splitscreen?! Nööö.... Danke. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR: Alright campaign but misleading, Fun multiplayer but lacks social playlists, Good forge mode but lacks a browsing system.

The game is honestly an alright game by itself but the campaign was quite misleading, the commercials all talked about "Hunting for the truth" when in all actuality the truth is known almost immediately from the start. Chief pretty much tells them where he is going, they hyped it up as if the Chief was going to go rogue and that it was going to be us figuring out the truth as to his reasons, or something like that. It is explained pretty thoroughly where he is going and what he is doing. It felt kinda cheap to get hyped about something that honestly didn't play much of a role in the story line at all.

I like that they tried to do what halo 2 did and introduce a secondary character to play as. I will admit that I can see why they're trying to at least tone down the Chief, as he has received criticism for being a bland emotionless character but that being said, the game pretty much revolves around him, shorting his play time down to 3 missions is a pretty bad way of introducing a second major character. To make matters worse the character they tried to replace him with is a bland emotionless character too! Humourless, emotionless, Locke was not a good choice at all. I would have preferred to play as Buck because at least he doesn't take himself so seriously.

The campaign didn't even bother to introduce anything new, other than terrible squad based combat, which usually involved you going down and your squad attempting to go after you at the last second, or your squad going down and leaving you to fight by yourself anyway. The new character had little to no story and the enemies with the exception of maybe one or two, were the same as Halo 4's. I was hoping to see flood, or maybe something new, but instead the story revolves around this awkward love story between a man and his expired A.I.

As for the multiplayer, well it's fast paced and exciting but tough to really love, seeing as there are a total of two social playlists, Big Team and a weekly rotation. I would like a living dead playlist again please, or more objective type playlists. Playlists like Griffball and such are no where to be found on the multiplayer, giving you the choice of trying to get a objective game on Big Team and most likely getting stuck with Slayer and on the same two maps over and over again, or trying out the weekly playlist til you grow bored of playing the same objective game type.

With over 20 multiplayer matches, I have yet to even manage to find a game of Assault, Oddball, King of the Hill, or Infection. I am a bit disappointed by the lack of playlists. The maps seem fairly decent and are nice, I must admit.

The forge mode is the most in-depth type of creation I have seen in a halo game. There is great potential for the forge mode but a lack of a file browser makes it difficult to appreciate.

    5/10. not great, not terrible

This was a Spartan Locke game with a glorified cameo by the Master Chief, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing this felt more like a pumped up ODST than a Halo Reach. The story was sparse, lacked the emotional impact of Halo 4 and felt like a middle-act of a film.

As for multiplayer online - I'm not a fan. If "run and gun" is your thing then Titanfall is infinitely more fun, to say nothing about more evolved multiplayer FPS's like COD and Battlefield.

In conclusion - looks good, runs slick and I'm glad to have played it but it's the first in the franchise since ODST that I won't be replaying. More "hollow" than "Halo"

Don't be mislead by the 7/10, to me a 7 is a good game with some flaws and that fits Halo 5s category with flying colors. Halo 5 has a strong gameplay mechanic that kept me interested as it was a fresh breathe from previous Halo's, usually I would complain about something like that but Halo 5 seemed to bring back what I loved about the older ones and still advance in new combat ideas. What Halo 5 does not bring to the table, is a satisfying campaign, with its misleading advertising which did hype me up for a huge battle that lasted around 2 minutes of a cutscene, brilliant work 343. The start, middle and end was sloppy, where is masterchief throughout the game? is that how halo works now? asking where the "protagonist" is, really? In a game like Halo 5 it is clear that multiplayer is the money shot now, screw the campaign is basically the feel I got off of this and that is dreadful because halo has always had a strong narrative to accompany a game with so many unique elements, Halo 1,2,3 and Reach are easily my most beloved games due to the campaign being excellent but also because they could balance concentration on the campaign as well as executing a top notch multiplayer. 343 industries hasn't caught on to that yet. Now Halo 5's multiplayer, is it good? yes, it is a fairly balanced multiplayer with qualifers to see ones skill and a gamemode called 'warzone' which is basically what it is called. I don't have a HUGE problem with REQ packs, i don't buy them because i don't need them to have a good time. 7/10 good; has strong potential for further improvements like say i don't know a campaign worth playing. A solid FPS, great multiplayer. Your money is up to your playstyle, want a fun campaign? buy the MasterChief Collection. If you enjoy competitive multiplayer, sink your money in because it is worth that alone, it single handedly pulls it away from an average rating Expand

The game can be completed within 5 hours and it has no multiplayer. The campaign however was trash. The multiplayer was really fun and if this wasn't a direct sequel to Halo 4, and instead was something like halo reach, then it could easily get 8/10.

This impact leaves you feeling like you're a naked human in a gunfight rather than the classic man of chaos conveyed in the original three games.
The art style is very messy as it negatively effects the graphical impacts of terrain, leaving it to be very blocky gray experience and at points of the campaign my nearby friend thought I was playing on a forge map.
The story was very shocking as I couldnt believe the classic Halo campaign had been turned into a sloppy underdeveloped campagn with some new spartans i've never heard of and didnt in the slightest care about, but my worst gripe is that the developer has created one of the worst plots i've ever seen and whats worse is that its ireversable.
Many say the multiplayer is fantastic but my view on it is that it's so average, it could be mistaken as any space shooter and isn't nearly as close as being as good as multiplayers in games such as OverWatch or Battlefield.
I am a fan of Halo but this game is totally disapointing and I haven't scratched the surface.

But let me make something clear first the story for Halo 5 is a complete mess. Like tell me what Tanka's role is in the game or something about her personality you cant because she and most of the team members in the game are boring and provide nothing to the plot. Other then Buck I do love Buck but that's because we've seen him before in another game and already saw his character before hand. Anyway like I said the plot is all over the place and while theirs a lot of interesting narrative ideas they are executed poorly and I would say the plot is certainly a step down from 4 which also had a a lot of interesting ideas but handled them poorly. Where the game does improve significantly from 4 is the gameplay while still no where on the same level as the older Halo games the gun play is much more fun to play even if it doesn't feel very Halo in its mechanics. Some things I don't mind like sprinting and aiming down sights these were gonna come sooner r later to the series I feel. But the ground pound and boost stuff are just kind of weird and also make the backs of Spartans all ugly because they all need this jet booster thing now. I guess this is a good enough time as any to say that much like Halo 4 I don't like the art style of this game but I do think it looks a bit better then 4. But the covenant still look ugly in this one just a little bit less so. When it comes to enemy AI they seem a bit better but still no where to the level of the old Halo games. But at the very least the Prometheans are a lot more fun to fight. You still fight them more then I would like but the class they have is better to fight and I like that they made the big knight's into a heavy class. Overall the gun paly is smoother and the overall gameplay is better then Halo 4 which is the most important factor for me. While the plot is a mess that the game doesn't like to explain all that well and levels you with a cliff hanger the game play makes it up enough for me that I can say Halo 5 is fine. Because while the campaign is lack luster the multiplayer is a big step up from 4 and on its own can b a lot of fun to play. Expand

    No recomendado.

Apart from multiplayer the gameplay feels amazing and weapon balance is decent. It mainly loses points in the campaign, lack of splitscreen, and microtransactions. The campaign is absolutely terrible. The characters are bland, the writing is boring and most of the story doesn't even feature Master Chief, the main character of the halo franchise. Apart from this lack of splitscreen co-op removes one major element of Halo that fans adore. Another problem is the lootbox system which bases multiplayer progression solely on luck and not skill. You need to unlock REQ packs(loot boxes) to get access to armor, assassinations, poses, and most importantly warzone requisitions such as weapons and vehicles that you can use in a game of Warzone. Despite the microtransactions the new forge and custom games system is mostly decent, with the only exception being the removal of map voting which takes away the player's ability to choose what maps they can play on. I would suggest this despite it's flaws as it is still a solid game and 343 has clearly learned from their blunders. Expand

The multiplayer has gone through so many updates, and though I’m not a fan of the new abilities and super high tech lookin stuff, it is so satisfying getting a kill, it makes this “badink” noise when you get a headshot kill and it feels great. The best playlist is still the halo three throwback one, which is basically taking all the goofy stuff from halo five, and it makes a game that lives up to the bungie games multiplayer. Also arbor customization is it horrible, Halo reach is better though. You have to play games earn points and buy packs to get a chance of unlocking a permanent weapon skin or armor unlock. Overall this game had a rough start along with MCC, but both games have redeemed them selves over the years. Now they are to the best first person shooters on this generation of consoles.

Decent campaign with no extreme highs or lows. Its a pity they removed split-screen from this game mode as it was a big selling point.

Solid mechanics but its not a halo game, lacks details on the water on vegetation on the story and so on. Is by far a spit on the face of people that loves the campaign of the previous entries. Like the Multiplayer but if not because of the multiplayer that i buy Halo games. If is just multiplayer that 343 cares about make a free to play multiplayer Halo and make your easy money.

To be honest, this is currently the weakest game in the mainline of the Halo series, and certainly not the best Xbox One exclusive to buy a console for. If we talk about a single company, then this is a very sad sight. The characters are very superficial and uninteresting, like the events in general, there are practically no interesting gameplay situations. Even in "Halo 4" there were more innovations than I saw here. No new enemies were added, except for the Promethean flying machine (a cross between the Wasp and the Banshee), and that's it. Very scarce.

But God bless her, with a miserable company, the multiplayer is currently empty. In a regular rotation, no one plays the infection mode or the team siesta of large teams, for some reason the rating system is divided into many modes, of which ten-play only the most boring massacre. And the cherry on this slop cake is the conflict zone. No one plays in this mode, there are simply no players.

This is a big disappointment, and 97 gigs were completely wasted. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone these days. Glory to Ukraine!

First off, I played this game as a palate cleanser after taking on Hollow Knight, so I played it on easy. Hollow Knight is hard enough that it made me look for something simple and popcorn-y to help wash it down after I’d spent 11 or 12 hours on it.

Halo 5 was great for that. It’s a simple game with an old plot, a plot that’s already been done a hundred times and will be done a hundred

Halo 5 was great for that. It’s a simple game with an old plot, a plot that’s already been done a hundred times and will be done a hundred more times before it’s replaced, but I didn’t mind it for that—there’s a place in the world for old stories coming around again. (I’m not sure that place is in the middle of a Halo series, with a technological giant footing the bill—it seems like those games should be a touch more revolutionary—but this is where we are, tech giants don’t want to take that risk.) I’ll just say this: If you dread seeing the same old archetypes repeated through a similar story arc as the action movie you watched next week, your worst fears will be realized here.

The levels were fine in the beginning, got really interesting, and then went back to fine. Everything worked and I didn’t encounter any bugs.

Now, I thought the music was above average (a special shout out to the French horns used throughout, especially when they were matched with trumpets over the top—really interesting scoring techniques used there) but the assets used and the general design scheme were nothing out of the ordinary.

I feel like I can’t really comment on the gameplay, because I played the whole game through on Easy. Normally to do a review I would play it on Normal, but, again, this was a palate cleanser.

Halo 5: Guardians is okay. Its campaign is rubbish, but the multiplayer is solid thanks to the foundation it’s built upon. Warzone is a really enjoyable experience, and while combat is still mostly about tossing grenades and hitting the melee button, the whole Requisition gimmick adds some much-needed flavor to proceedings.

The latest Halo is a big deal only for hardcore Halo fans. For me the single player campaign was unbearably pompous and despite 1080p and 60 fps the visuals are not as breathtaking as they once were in Halo 4. The game builds a solid foundation for Halo 6, but it’s not one of those games you absolutely have to play. [13/2015, p.48]

With a more accessible and engaging story and solid new designs for the Prometheans, Halo 5 is a major improvement over Halo 4. Warzone is a great addition to the multiplayer, though the mode seems to have some game balance issues. [Nov 2015]
