Despite being a hell of a challenge, the speed of the action combined with some awesome heavy metal music made Grood a hard title to put down. I’ll likely never see the end of it, and yet I can see myself coming back for a quick session in between other titles simply due to how fun and frantic it is.

If you are in the market for a very hard but rewarding shooter, GROOD on Xbox One could well scratch that itch. The action is non-stop, the sectors that you fight through are all very different, and with both the time of day and weather dynamically changing, it’s unusual to play the same looking stage twice.

When it comes to shoot 'em ups, Grood is a capable indie although it doesn't do all that much beyond the very basics of the genre.

Despite the fact I'm.a hardcore fan, I’m really the kind of player to dominate these style games in one credit.. It’s hard. Really hard. I was warned by Claudio Catalano, the developer, when I received our code, and boy were they right! When starting up Grood we a given three difficulty options; Hard, Harder, and Hardest. Just in case the message wasn’t clear enough, Grood is a challenging gaming experience. Yet, also one that I can't walk away from. A large part of that was due to the fact that the action is immediate like games of retro. Some of of the scrolling shooters ease you into the opening stage Grood isn't here to play around, making repeated plays feel a bit slow while our improved skills and knowledge of the level allow us to breeze through. Grood isn’t having any of that. Within seconds there are enemy ships galore; smaller ones that kamaikaze their way towards us, while bigger gunships let off fast moving rockets in our direction. Bumping either the top or bottom of the play field also damages us, so there are very tight spaces to maneuver around in order to not get destroyed. Our ship has 3 green lights on the side of it to indicate a health gauge, though often times it’s all but impossible to keep track off due to the speed of the action. Also not helpful is that once a certain amount of damage is taken the screen displays a cracked effect that distorts it slightly, as well as draining progressively more colour from the gameplay too. The more we’re hit, the harder this already challenging game becomes. Health pickups come along occasionally but only replenish some health, so if we’re particularly hurt we need to get a couple in a row to bring us back to full health and power. Fortunately our ship isn’t one to go down without a fight so we start begin a ultra high rate of speed gatling gun that makes quick work of the smaller enemies. Stage 2 brings in a shotgun style weapon that has a slower rate of fire, but way more effective and stronger at wiping out groups of enemies more quickly. Later an upgrade for the gatling gun is acquired as well, and I imagine more weapons and upgrades too. Moving the ship around is fast and responsive and when I hit that zen-like zone where I was ducking and dodging almost instinctively it really is a blast to enjoy. I did feel as though sometimes my ship took damage when there was no real cause possibly bad hit box detection, but again it’s all so fast and hectic it’s possible I was just missing hazards. Despite being a hell of a challenging game, the speed of the action combined with some awesome heavy metal music made Grood a hard title to put away. I’ll likely never see the end of it eventually, and yet I can see myself coming back for a quick improvement in between other titles simply due to how fun and frantic it is to enjoy these remade retro stylized grass on Xbox One. The price is great and so is the game. Expand
