A satisfying arcade off-road racer, with great graphics but with a not so good frame-rate stability. Its main single-player mode, Off-Road Masters, lacks a bit of spark and longevity, while the multiplayer mode looks too basic and scarcely populated, with long matchmaking times.

A pleasantly straightforward and playable racer, Gravel is capable but ordinary. [May 2018, p.80]

All in all, Gravel, despite its best efforts, isn’t a bad game. It’s rough, annoying, hard on the eyes, and unpolished. But it is still fun to play and for a quick and dirty arcade session, there is a lot worse out there.

Gravel is a fun game that I siphoned a lot of enjoyment out of during its brief stint. I wish online was more populated and I wish the single player was a bit more meaty, especially at full asking price. Still when it hits a deep sale Gravel is worth a look for those that enjoy the off-road arcade racing we used to be flooded with on consoles.

Gravel is a lot of fun, offering an enjoyable arcade-racing experience with oodles of sideways flare. It's well presented and has plenty of appeal for fans of single-player games that just want something they can pick up and play without much of a learning curve...The lack of HDR is disappointing, but at least the Xbox One X has been considered, though personally I'd trade 4K support for 60 FPS every day.

It's never going to overly impress you, but it lays solid foundations for a series that could go somewhere. With its stunning scenery and fairly open track design, I'd love to see Milestone throw caution to the wind, add a boost button and go all-out arcade. Just then, we might have a worthy successor to Motorstorm on our hands.

Gravel is a true arcade racer. The game has a lot of cars and types of events to keep you going for some time. The problem is that the tracks look very similar and that the most tracks are rallycross tracks. More tracks would create more diversity.

Gravel is a game worth playing for despite its technical shortcomings. Although the result is generally good and promising, it is still affected by a very rough graphic background and an excessively simple game development.

Gravel is entertains for the most part but outside the career mode the game lacks longevity. Coupled with some odd omissions such as leaderboards it's a competent racer and not much else.

Gravel attempts to create a full arcade racer with a serious side. It feels like a welcome amalgamation of a number of familiar arcade titles, distilling the racing elements and doing away with distractions and diversions. While this allows the player to jump into race after race after race, it makes it feel one-dimensional at times. However, the arcade racing is certainly fun and engaging, and it's fully adaptable to any racing level. Fans of old-school racing games should certainly enjoy Gravel. Milestone has created something that's been missing in the genre, and though imperfect, it's a good start to what may be a new recurring franchise.

Gravel is Milestone's answer for those who want arcade racing game. It's a good attempt to approach a different game to this genre, but perhaps the result isn’t as attractive as they'd like. Technically poor, the game offers a poor experience. Gravel could be enough for some players, but certainly, it could be better.

It’s a competent and occasionally pretty pick-up-and-play arcade racing game at its core, but it has the whiff of a game released in the wrong era – a scent it just can’t shake.

Gravel has come out to change that and thankfully it’s a very good addition to the genre, and despite it suffering with a few shortcomings it ultimately provides you with some brilliant racing. Racing in the game has a true arcade feel, so don’t expect too much realism because they haven’t gone for that approach. The racing on the whole though is very fun and the best thing is that it feels great whilst also offering you a challenge. In terms of vehicles there is a huge amount for you to get to grips with and each vehicle feels considerably different, which is great. There is a decent array of circuits for you to race on and each circuit is packed full of variety which without a doubt keeps things fresh for a lot longer. Gravel offers you a pretty decent career mode and it can be very enjoyable at times, unfortunately though there just isn’t enough of it and that’s basically the biggest problem with this game. There isn’t enough in terms of content as well and if more modes were added I could see myself playing this game for a very long time because everything else has been done extremely well. They do offer you some online multiplayer offerings and this does give the game some much needed replay value. As far as the online multiplayer goes everything holds up really well and I didn’t suffer with any noticeable problems, which is great. Hopefully they keep adding content and make the online multiplayer bigger because that will without a doubt keep the game relevant for a lot longer. The presentation side of the game is something that tickled my fancy quite a lot. Visually the game can look beautiful at times and the effects when going into water have been done very well. The sound design is also pretty decent and it does more than enough to keep you satisfied. At the end of the day Gravel is a game that I’ve been looking forward to for quite a while and thankfully it exceeded my expectations in a way. It may not be perfect and it may be lacking on the content side, but what’s here works well and most important of all it provides you with a true and fun arcade style. Fans of arcade racers will definitely find something they love in Gravel and with me being a fan of arcade racers I appreciate the effort that’s gone into the game and I hope Gravel gets bigger and bigger.
