Genesis Alpha One is a tremendous roguelike that rarely holds back. Its many systems are well balanced, its plethora of unique objectives remain fresh, and its random generation solidifies its already impressive variation. There’s room for minor improvements, and there’s some slight visual blemishes across the entire board, but this takes little away from the constant uncertainty that the game relays at a tense and frequent rate.

Genesis Alpha One knows how to mix different genres to find its own identity. The Result: a fun and addictive game.

Genesis Alpha One, once it grabs you, is a hard one to put down. Dripping in atmosphere, exploring and building your own space-ship and then visiting strange new planets has all the wonder you could hope for. The added tension of wondering if your crew has been infected by some sort of alien parasite – and then watching as your ship slowly becomes a scene from sci-fi horror film, is exhilarating.

Whilst initial moments are slow to take hold – and your first few runs will end in confusion and disaster – should you be prepared to throw everything you have at it, and are ready to take a good few hits in the process, then you will easily be rewarded by a mammoth game that delivers ship building elements, gunplay options and exploration in spades.

Genesis Alpha One is a great idea and a very interesting and entertaining option in the genre of space exploration.

An interesting way to mix exploration, the addition of new parts to our starship and shooter sections with fast encounters. This game really pushes us to save the human DNA...

This is a very interesting mix of space exploration and crafting, with some roguelike and shooter mechanics, although its complexity and its confusing menu system makes it only recommendable for big fans of the genre.

It’s a testament to the game’s staying power that, even when your ship has been destroyed, you’ll come back for more. Just don’t go sticking your face in any oversized eggs.

A very successful blend of management, base building and FPS mechanics, partly ruined by an unbalanced and frustrating rogue-like component.

Genesis Alpha One is an interesting experiment that works in all its components despite it needs some more refinements that need to came from the developer support.

The game works within its microverse but it has a tendency to get locked up in its gameplay loop. When nothing is happening apart from routinely harvesting ore, it takes persistence to keep the expedition going on. I can imagine a real space travel Genesis Alpha One portrays in its video game terms being rather uneventful. Heck, you wouldn’t even want anything unexpected happening but being safe and sound even at the risk of getting bored. So, as odd as it may sound, uneventfulness is the game’s biggest virtue. Otherwise, you’d be desperately running and gunning around corridors until you run out of ammunition and crew members and start your trek all over again.

Genesis Alpha One has some really cool ideas going for it, unfortunately they’re outweighed by repetitive busywork that you easily get bogged down in. Sure, it’s an interesting strategy game at times, but the grind is just too damn much!

By trying to be all things to all people Genesis Alpha One loses any sense of identity. There is some really interesting ideas at work, and cool aesthetic in one portion of the game, but other areas feel underdeveloped.

Genesis Alpha One is a game with some good ideas but no elegant way to execute them all. The merging of ship building and exploration is quite good once you understand how to do it. DNA splicing is also a neat little touch, but it doesn't fix the fact that the clones are as dumb as bricks and about half as useful. Planetary exploration feels fine, but the gunplay is undercooked. All in all, there's a decent title here if you're able to overcome all of its issues.

In conclusion, Genesis Alpha One is a decent way to spend a weekend, but it will wear out its welcome not long afterwards. Building, upgrading, and defending a starship is compelling enough. There are also those times when a large-scale invasion generates some real excitement. However, a lot of time is going to be spent performing mundane tasks. Although this does an admirable job of streamlining most of them, boredom will eventually set in. Still, the unique premise might be reason enough to check it out.

Losing progress in a roguelike is meant to entice you to hop back in with new accessories to change your next run, but Genesis Alpha One doesn't have the mechanics in place to make these variations interesting enough to experiment with.

I really enjoyed the presentation side of the game and without a doubt both the visuals and sound design create a sci-fi atmosphere that’s very compelling. They have done a great job of combining different genre’s together because each genre throws something different in the mix keeping things interesting throughout. Exploration always feels rewarding and the easy to pick up and play style means the gameplay never gets too overbearing.
You’re allowed a great sense of freedom when building and creating your ship and this makes defeating your enemies even more satisfying. There isn’t much in terms of a story present and the story that is available to you is a little on the basic side. As I first started playing I did get a little frustrated because the gameplay was a little too difficult, and it did feel unfair at the start. Genesis Alpha One is a game that combines a number of different and in some ways unique genre’s together and whilst some games may have failed by doing this Genesis Alpha One shines bright because of this. The main reason why it shines bright is because each genre present feels equally important and when you combine that with the decent amount of content available to you you’ll find this to be a game that you return back to time and time again. At its core then this game is mainly about survival and even though some games of this ilk can get a little complicated this game doesn’t go down that road. Instead it features an easy to pick up and play style with a lot of freedom thrown in for good measure which makes looking after your ship very satisfying. I will warn you though that the game can be quite unforgiving at the start and it does feel a little unfair during this time but I recommend that you look past this because it does get easier and it does reward exploration quite a lot. At the end of the day then Genesis Alpha One gets a lot right and if you like the sci-fi style then you’ll thoroughly enjoy what this game delivers in regards to the presentation side of things. Recommending this game is quite easy then because it has very few problems and despite its lack of story it still takes you on a intriguing and very enjoyable adventure. Thumbs up!

I found this game by chance looking over the digital “Black Friday” sale and it’s description and subsequent trailer looked interesting. I’d say that the high 60’s Score that the game gets across the board on Metacritic are somewhat fair, but I think a lot of the bugs have been patched after it’s launch. This game is a pure 10 for me. I’m tired of every game being a “Souls” game. Especially the indie games. I’m tired of the “collect all this stuff” massive sandbox games. GAO has a super in-depth spaceship building mechanic that has you searching for materials on planets and in debris/wreckage. While I found this unique it’s so familiar and simple to pick up that it’s my new go to game to zone out and have a good adventure as a space captain. If you are into any of the Sim style games and “space crew management” with “invaders” and your own “clone factory” sounds fun then check this game out. Human models aside, the graphics are good overall. They even boarder on great when you are planet-side and the atmosphere of the game holds up if you are a Sci-Fi fan. Full Review »

Genesis Alpha One –
