I am a HUGE Gears 3 fan! Especially the horde mode where me and several friends played for 5 years. The campaign was a lot shorter then I thought. About 8-8.5 hours. I also liked how they introduced a couple of new weapons. The overkill and buzzkill are awesome! It was very obvious they left it for another game or two which was fine by me.

I don't do versus mode so much but I do know a ton about Horde mode. As I said before, I thought Gears 3 had the perfect horde mode. Gears 4 is ok at best to me. I guess one of the good things about it is that they have pretty much forced you to try new things and take you out of your comfort zone. My beef is not with the class system as it is more with a couple of other key contents. One is the "build the barriers wherever you want" thing. The combat on normal is so hard (with 3 people) that the only way to be able to survive long enough, you have to set up at one end of the map all the time. You can't experience these maps for what they are because you can easily get run over otherwise unless you find a one way funnel. In Gears 3 you were forced to take residence one place or another and try and defend it. Here, you are lucky if you can defend two barriers. The other thing is the 30 seconds they give you before the waive starts. Are you kidding me? 30 seconds? With all the crap that we have to do to prepare, they should have at least given us 1 minute. You can't just repair like you used to, one button and your done. Here you have to have a engineer with a tool to repair everything. That takes time. Then you have to have all the guys go out there and pick up all the "money" from dead bodies. Then bring it back to the base. If you coordinate it well, you are lucky if you can get everything done in 30 seconds. It usually doesn't happen though.

My friends and I thrived on seeing how long you can go without using the turrets or Silverback in Gears 3. In 4, you can't survive unless you start using it at waive 8! Are you kidding me? And this is on normal. This makes the game very boring where you always are setting up at one end of the map trying to funnel them in and killing them with a turret or two. In Gears 3, we were well into the late 30's before we needed heavier weapons.

The other thing in Horde that was lacking was the variety of baddies. In 3 there were so many different kind of guys. Here, there are basically just a handful. There are basically 4 different types of Robots and 4 different kinds of Locusts. In 3 you could tell which was which by the way they looked and sounded. In 4 for example, the Big lumbering guys all look the same but carry different weapons. Same with the drones. That was not the case in 3. The variety was a lot more.

Again, I am basing this on playing this with 3 people, not the 5 online that most do. That is because we have found out that most people don't play horde the way it should be, as a team. They just go off running on their own being idiots and getting themselves killed. Gears 4 tries to address the team concept but I don't think it succeeded doing that. It just made it more difficult and tedious and not as fun to play.

I almost forgot, the whole card business that most game developers are going to is just so annoying. It is fun to open them at first but then after a little while you realize you keep getting the same crap. And they don't tell you how you make money in order to get card packs free. Once we played until waive 20 on horde and got $1000. Next time we played till 30 and got only a few hundred. What gives? Anyway, just another way for us to spend real money which there is no way in hell I will.

Gears 3 was the pinnacle of greatness in the Gears series. I just don't feel the pull to keep playing 4 like I did with 3 is there.

    Cons:
The cover mechanic in vs is janky but if you know how to utilise it then you have the advantage. This makes it HELL for first timers and the average XBL child/namecaller/overall **** will probably give you issues for trying to learn this game. Once learned however its a great multiplayer. Especially with friends.

There are some quick and infrequent burst of cinematic excitement, and adrenaline, but it quickly goes back to spray and pray. This game shines best during the windflares, and "cinematic" uncharted-like sequences ( like the bike and the mech), but those make up maybe 1/5 of the game. JD is also way more interesting than marcus, he actually has a fun demeanor to him, almost like nathan drake. Game also has a decent pvp, something I can see myself pouring some hours in, not the best, but very serviceable. To end, why wasn't the game more of act 5, and not 2-4? why didn't the game have more of the mech-sequences/ bike sequences/ even the that boss fight that actually has depth (the one where you shoot the generators..second to last?). Why was the majority of the game mind-numbingly boring spray and pray fest. I probably will never understand the gears franchise.. Expand

The game overall is very good and very close to the feeling of the Gears 1 which I adore. There are great and enjoyable "bruckheimer" moments like that improvised elevator or the plane chase and overall, everything feels fine tuned.

I didn't like the "wave" phase in the campaign: they are too slow to prepare with a strategy that could be summed up as "choose 2 barriers or one turret".

But the reason why I gave only a 7 is because I'm also rating the "story" that I found very weak and predictable if there was actually something to predict. It feels like the many boring netflix series where you watch a 40 minutes episode to realize that thing could have been told in 10 minutes without sacrificing the emotional charge. The characters (geek soldiers?) are not very interesting either but, to be fair, it's hard to measure to the original gears.

I'm not a fan of the new 5v5 in multiplayer I think gears works best in a 4v4 format. The micro transactions. There shouldn't be micro transaction in $60 game with $40 season pass. That's completely unacceptable. Don't like the judgment like wave segments in the campaign. That's what horde mode is for and it shouldn't be in the campaign. To me, gears 4 is a solid 7/10. A good comeback for the gears series but ultimately not the game I hoped it would be. Expand

I don't really see the reason why people are hating on this game. I actually think this is better than the first one.
Gears of War 4 is a beautiful shooter, with tons of over the top moments, plenty of guns, gruesome enemies and cool characters. The writing is a bit dull, the last act is pretty boring and the ending is bad. But that didn't break the entire game for me. I recommend it.

The difference between Nathan Drake and the forgettable protagonist in Gears of War is that Nathan Drake's banter is funny. The other characters are similar modeled after checking all the boxes, like Poochie from that old Simpson's episode. The best part of the game is when grumpy old Marcus Fenix comes back to complain about the robot army destroying his tomatoes.

Some of the set pieces in Gears of War 4 are pure triple A magic. The new mechanic is wind. You have to find cover from it, use destructible objects to take advantage of it, and then dodge lightning. (The world of Gears of War makes no sense.) The new enemies are robots. You might think you would start with the same old pasty faced grubs and move up to robots. No. You start with the new and interesting enemy and move down to the same old same old from 4 other Gears of War games. (Lest we forget Gears of War: Judgment. I know I did. Totally skipped that entire game.) Weapons are also the same old same old until you get the giant robot to pilot.

This is where Gears of War 4 is both amazing and a lesson in missed opportunities. Rather than spending hours upon hours crouched behind chest high walls, you could be stomping around in a giant mech. Gears of War 2 knew this, and had players pilot flying monsters, walking monsters, giant drill platforms, a tank, and finally, a helicopter. Gears of War 4 is for the most part content with walking around slowly. The environment looks great. After Halo 5, the Xbox One needed a game that looked properly next gen. What Microsoft forgets is that I have a whole beautiful world outside my front door. What I want is escapism. Crouching behind cover is not escapism.

I did not bother with multi-player. The game is a few years old and the population is probably circling the drain. I never much cared for the slow paced multiplayer in the Xbox 360 days. Besides, I picked this game up for $5 and the campaign was enough to get my money's worth.

All-in-all, Gears of War 4 is a good game. 7/10 good. For this generation of derivative sequels and micro-transaction laden trip, a 7 out of 10 is almost the gold standard.

Expand

Lookswise it did impress me considering the crappy hardware it was running on. The game uses dynamic resolution and on occasion when things got heavy you could see a drop in resolution and some tearing.
But the biggest issue when it comes to the singleplayer and the horde mode with the xbox one version is the low framerate. The game runs at 30fps except for VS multiplayer. It does hold 30 for the most part by sacrificing resolution when need be.
The lower visuals I can take, but it is just not up to par in such a game to run such low frames. Especially coming from the buttery smooth pc version playing this feelt like a substantial sacrifice to gameplay and I did not feel enticed to keep playing.

As for the game itself it is a Gears game, no more no less. It doesn't surprise and innovate really but it doesn't disappoint either.
The shooting and action is solid albeit a bit repetetive, the whole game is moving from one area to the next doing the exact same thing. The game does not reward exploration and it doesn't mix the formula or gameplay style for variety. But what is there is good.
Story is okay but got an abrupt ending wich left alot unexplained. I feel they could have fleshed out some bits a bit more.
The singleplayer took me around 8-9h to complete on normal. Quite short. But there is replayability here. I will play the campaign again on a higher difficulty in coop once my friend gets the game. And then there is multiplayer VS or Horde mode to expand your playtime if you are into that.

I would say that if you are a SP guy only and the multiplayer or coop does not interest you that much, then what this game offers might be a bit lacking and I'd rate it at around a 6/10 due to the short campaign and repetetive gameplay. But if you are into coop/multiplayer and because of the fact that it not only offers coop, it offers a full campaign coop to boot AND local coop even on the pc version... I will crank that score up a bit. However I also subtracted one point from this game on this xbox version compared to my score on the pc version simply because of the impact the **** performance on xbox one has in terms of gameplay. It is substantial.

In the end I would recomend the game on pc first and foremost, but also on xbox one if you have no other choice. It's play anywhere, so you get both versions regardless without any extra cost.

Story: now admittedly, I am brand new to the series so many aspects of this game or throwbacks are either brand new to me or go over my head. But I think I get the main idea of the story, many people are getting snatched away by creatures being called “The Swarm”. You play as Marcus Fenix’s son James, who is trying to rescue some of the crew. Later on you learn that these “Swarm” have some sort of connection with the old enemies called “The Locust”, however we don’t learn a whole lot in this game as it feels the developers are setting up for the story to really take place in a future installment.
Gameplay: this game handles extremely well. It strongly urges the use of using cover as often as possible and the weapons while varied all feel incredibly satisfying to use. Whether killing an enemy by filling them with bullets or ripping them in half with a chainsaw, you’ll be right at home no matter the weapon you enjoy using.
Conclusion: this game is really enjoyable. It was well worth the price and I am always eager to get in and try out the multiplayer modes in the game. The story mode while not being short didn’t feel like it dragged on too long, nor did I feel like it was ever a chore playing the game.
That being said I personally didn’t personally enjoy the three Fabricator segments in the story which are essentially wave survival modes.
Score: while this game does do a lot of things right, it is not without its flaws. The Fabricator sections feel like they breakup the story a bit too much and at times just feel forced on the player. As for the story, while being amazing, feels a bit like filler to prepare for a future game. I give this game a score of 7/10 (note: this score is purely personal opinion and you should try the game for yourself before passing judgement)

It really just comes down to if the series really needed this. I was very excited initially, but looking at Judgment and GOWUE made me think that maybe the franchise was doing this because it wants to appease a new crowd of people. Considering the veterans have mostly been long and gone from the franchise, enticing newcomers can be quite challenging and seeing the Gears legacy be brought down after 3 is very problematic. Gears of War 4 rekindles hope for the series, but it needs to overcome the stupid practices it has and really embrace new ideas if it has any hope of being the strong flagship it once was. Expand

Not a great game, but Kait Diaz makes the whole thing worth it. She is a great character the likes of which only Dom can compete with. That said, the main protag is bland, and Marcus isn't allowed to be the best he can be because he's not the focus. There also an obvious attempt to cash in on some nostalgia at the end for no real reason. With all that out of the way though, the gameplay is better than ever, and it makes the game at least fun, even if only one new character is worth anything. Hopefully Gears 5 will be announced this year and come out next year at the latest, and the characters will be fixed. Gears original trilogy got better with time, hopefully this one will as well. Stunning graphics, good controls; short and kind of dumb story. I'm not a multiplayer kind of guy, so that part doesn't really interest me, I bored out of it after 45 minutes.

GoW in general is very nostalgic for me, especially GoW2.
Sadly, for me that is, I still have lag to annoy me in GoW4, however there are different pros and cons this time.
    - Story Mode Most lame GoW story, with the exception of GoW5 with the "POLITICAL MESSAGE". I honesty didn't hate nor liked it. It's flat. Much like its characters. Much like its "new enemies" but with no variety.

    - Story Mode
Most lame GoW story, with the exception of GoW5 with the "POLITICAL MESSAGE".
I honesty didn't hate nor liked it. It's flat.
    Much like its characters.
Much like its "new enemies" but with no variety.
The main issue is that the developers had no clue how to make GoW again, since the Locust were defeated.
So instead making different enemies (like DB-Robots vs GOG), the tried to half ass their way to create a "new war" with the Swarm.

Now, the swarm, have barely no explanation for their existence and the game doesn't even at least display difference from the Locust.
They all go with skirts with shotguns screaming "human" instead of "ground walker".
There's literally nothing. Even the enemy that holds the Bow has no unique look to him.
Just a skirt and a hoodie.

The main "new" characters are .. K, I guess.
Kait looks cute (and in 5 looks like a FemiNazi)
JD Fenix is really bland and doesn't represent the GoW theme.
And Del.... is Finn for the new Star wars.

I have nothing to say, just play story once and leave it there.

    - Versus
Sweaty, Snarky and lots of old school MLG culture.
It's amazing how Halo, who once was flooded with the MLG culture, is now filled with a different community (for the better), but Gears kept both it's original audience + Esports culture.
I couldn't become an expect Gears play, since the Shotgun meta essentially revolved around connection speed and too much sweat.
Back in Gears 2 + 3, I just rocked the HammerBurst.
Now, since the sweaty community remained unlike the rest of us, the Hammerburst was removed from the default weapons category, and went back to be a power weapon.
The power of the community man.... it's something

    - Horde (the reason why I still play this)
    Gears 2's horde was... whatever
Gears 3's horde was in the right direction

And 4 just brings a whole new way to play Gears4 with the classes and fortification.
I honestly wish I could have my own premade team for harder difficulties of Horde, but I'm old now.
But It's fine, since I can play Normal mode casually and have my 2 hours fun.

The only issue is really with the playbase for horde, when total noobs join in, or mid quitters quit in the first rounds, it really sucks and when everybody leaves it's just no fun at all.
If you have a friend, and one that is good at playing Gears, play split screen, it's hella fun.

    Summary:
Gears 4 has it's different pros and cons, which are different from the other classic gears games.
It has the best horde mode from the 5 that have
It has an OK versus being dedicated to the OG fans
And it has a story mode.... which it's FLAT

    Get in Xbox Game pass.

The Coalition has managed to successfully bring every great elements from previous games into a new setting. Whether you go for single-player, multiplayer or horde mode, GoW4 hast plenty to offer. The visuals are stunning and the gameplay is the best in the series thus far; and despite shortcomings in the story and development of characters, GoW4 is easily one of the best third-person shooters of this generation.

The Coalition’s development team did a fantastic job adopting the Gears of War series. They’ve preserved what makes it special in our hearts and added in new bells and whistles which are absolutely welcome.
