The sheer amount of bugs in the game warrant significant score decreases alone. Since launch I have been unable to complete a full Escape or multiplayer match without being booted from the game due to the shoddy online service being woefully unprepared for the game's (staggered!) launch. The power taps in Horde mode often drop under textures making them impossible to interact with -- the problem sometimes corrects itself when they're destroyed and can be respawned. The same thing happens with some of the fortification textures. Campaign is not free from bugs either, from the infinite load bug (which requires a full console reset to fix) to the X interact not functioning bug.

That's before getting into the lackluster story and so-so gameplay that's more schizophrenic than ever. The Coalition couldn't decide whether they wanted a linear cover shooter (which is what made Gears popular in the first place) or an open world collect-a-thon, so they tried to incorporate both. Poorly. Cross-play multiplayer between console and PC in Gears 4 was a crapfest, so it comes as no surprise that all of the same issues (and more) exist this time around as well.

Sure, it's still decent, even with the political pandering being wielded like a bludgeon by the story writers, but is it on the same level as the original three? Not even close.

With Gears 5, there’s a lot to love, but it's not all guns and glory. The campaign is solid, making bold pushes in brave directions, and continues to be a hoot with friends. Escape is a worthy addition to the roster of modes, oozing potential for more creative players to realise. Versus is back in a big way, helping newcomers find their feet, while keeping loyal fans of the franchise happy with classic game types and the thank-god-it’s-not-terrible shotgun. If you’re any kind of shooter fan, this game has earned your attention. Sadly the story seems kind of underdelivered again and the new open world areas are mainly just empty filler. Expand

    Cons:
    - Kate is boring.
    - I found it also attributed to me finding the story boring. Second half of the game dragged on.. i just wanted it to end.

This game almost changed my opinion of the gears franchise, but alas the second half was dreadful.

Gears 5 could very well end up being among the best in the series over time, but only if Coalition manages to patch its many problematic technical issues that is currently destroying an otherwise excellent package. As of right now, I just can't recommend it at full price. It's fun when everything works, but this may be the buggiest launch of any triple-A video game this year.

I've always been somewhat indifferent to the gears series. I play it because I really enjoy Horde mode.

Look anyone who likes Horde tends to compare it to Overwatch now in Gears 5. I'm sorry but I'm not looking to play Overwatch, I never will be looking to play it and I personally hate they are trying to put overwatch style mechanics into Gears.

I’ve been a playstation guy my whole life, Ive never owned an xbox, but thanks to Microsofts decision to make their exclusives available on pc, im able to experience this side of the tracks, and I was so excited to do so, I never played a Gears of War Game, so I sat down on youtube, got a story recap and hopped in…
This is a 3rd person shooter that takes places after the events of gears of war 3 and 4.. you get part of the story at the beginning of this game…
I wasn’t too attached or interested after the intial run down, but still hyped for the gameplay, the tutroal starts, the game is having me look up to determine my input preferences, that alone had me excited for how neat this game was going to be…
But I just never was blown away…
The story telling and level design is just so bland.. nothing took my breath away or made me feel like wow, this is what ive been missing all of these years… I do love the weapon variety.. but when it comes down to combat, controls here are so unintuitive that it just constantly pulls you out of the game…
its okay to have the same control scheme as call of duty… they have it down… I don’t want to hold a buttown down to run, let me just click my stick… the fast reload mechanic makes you take your eye off of the action.. all of the mechanic decisions just makes me feel like Im juggling as Im shooting.
Throughout this 12 hour campaign yo udo have a little squad with you that changes as the story progresses.. and these members can be controlled by real people locally and online…which is what I highly advise…
As the ai here is completely useless…
Dels the type of guy to yell “nows our chance shoot his back!” And not do ****
Amking these drawnout unfun boss battles even more unfun and frustrating at times as you die over and over…
Does the boss know where I am Del?
That’s probably because im the only one of use shooting any bullets.
Who isn’t useless though is your robot companion jack…
He sticks with you through the end as youre searching the world to upgrade his abilities that are unlocked as the story progresses…
back to the mechanics issues though.. shuffling through jacks abilities mid combat or even post or pre combat is unintuitive and feels like a jumbled jumbled mess
but jack is easily my favorite part of this game…
Its just a shame that jack is the only incentive to explore though…
The world and level design here in Gears 5 again is just so bland, so uninteresting and boring…
there are a couple open world sections of the game where you can go explore a little if youd like.. but again.. nothing about this world made me care to do so…
another giant issue I had with this games campaign is its awful progression indicators in story…
don’t dare pause the game and com back to it later, because youl lhave no idea what youre supposed to be doing… Gears 5 does put little markers on the map for you to go to… but I would much prefer they put them on items im supposed to be interacting with instead of running around in circles looking for a switch or door with a footprint or hand print on it… it breaks the flow, takes me out of the world.. its just bad game design…
And when it comes to performance, Gears 5 is awful on PC..
I ran into constant crashes and Act 2 made the game completely unplayable.. literally… after searching the internet, ive discovered that this is not an uncommon issue.. updating all of my drivers did fix the crashing issue for me, but the game still stutters when too much is going on on screen.. I missed half of the final cutscene because it was stuck… I had to go to youtube to rewatch the ending.. and wouldn’t you know their cutscene video was lagging too.
Online here is pretty typical fun third person shooter competitive stuff…
Entertaining, nothing really wrong with it but nothing here to keep me hooked.. I felt no urge to play after playing for review purposes.. again like the campaign really bland.
Gears 5 is a good game… But as a flagship exclusive from microsoft… I feel that xbox loyalists deserve better
Theres nothing here to incentivize a purchase other than the continuation of a beloved franchise…
And If you are buying to continue the story, I would recommend the xbox version over the pc so you can actually see it all.
    I give Gears 5
    a 7/10

Its also one of the best looking games of the generation, with at times, awe-inspiring art design.

Coalition took some interesting steps for this sequel, but sadly, they fall short of previous iterations. The newer characters, despite now having two games to be developed across, are far less interesting than the originals (Del and JD are both such a bore). This impacts the narrative also, which despite some interesting story threads, does not hit home in the same way because of these characters. The game is just not as gritty or as dark as previous games. Furthermore, the new weapons added this time around are far less satisfying or useful than previous additions. The open world design in the game's two biggest Acts, like the case with Metro Exodus earlier this year, ruins the tempo and has little genuine benefit to reward the exploration. Jack's ability's, although neat, are far from necessary to progress.

The variety in multiplayer modes, a strength throughout the series, is maintained here. Each offering something different. Having only 7 maps in Versus is a real disappointment however, and these multiplayer maps are missing the dynamic features seen previously, resulting in Versus specifically, feeling like a step backwards. Lastly, there are very few customisation options at launch.

Overall, its a good game despite my criticisms, and nice addition to the series. Its just moved away slightly from what i believe made the series so great.

The plot is interesting enough, and the characters seem to behave very naturally which adds up to the credibility of the world.

But I simply couldn't enjoy the game because of how it's riddled with bugs and server issues. Every single session we had there were at least two times (often this number could go up to 5-6 times for a 2-hour session) we needed to restart the game because we've stumbled upon a game-breaking bug or the connection was lost.

I'm going to come back to the game in a month or two to finish the campaign and update the review. But for now, I can't recommend this title to anyone who was planning to enjoy it with a friend.

Expand

The Gears 4 loot box horror is over, but the micro transactions are still bad. Initially Gears 5 was pushing their iron currency, but then later changed some items to cash only. Buying iron early on with cash while it was on sale only to see that some items went cash only, was pretty crappy. Gears 5 reminds me of a free to play game that survives, maybe thrives, based on some gamers buying micro transactions. Problem is, they sell the game for normal price, unless you use game pass. Maybe the fact that it released for free on Gamepass is why it was so stingy at launch with content. Expand

Gears 5 is an odd thing; it's neither a grand leap forwards, nor a complete rehash of what came before, and therefore sits somewhere in the middle of the two. On the whole, the improvements do outweigh the negatives (the non-linear approach to campaign levels and the small changes to horde mode being some of the most notable), and while The Coalition still has some work to do to really make the series its own, this is a far bolder and more varied approach the relatively safe Gears 4. If you love shooters and you want a good place to jump back into the series, this is perfect place to work the rust out of your lancer.

Gears 5 proposes a breathtaking solo campaign and a generous array of multiplayer modes. Even if the recipe remains classic, we really want to go through with it. The characters are rather well written, the environments are often spectacular, and Jack the robot adds some salt to the gameplay. A visual feast and glorious action game that perfectly demonstrate Xbox One X's true power.
