Pretty graphics, dated art direction, lacking any destructability and physics. The open sections are empty and pointless, game in reality is the same old gears we have seen many times before. HDR is a highlight and is very well done and the game is definitely a step up from Gears 4.

I wavered between a 6 and 7 on this game. I was a huge gears fan from the original through gears 3. Gears 4 was decent with the exception of the random loot boxes and the season pass. Hardly any skins for characters, weapons, and only about 7 maps. Content has been added since launch though, but problems remain, such as a broken ranking system. The Gears 4 loot box horror is over, but the micro transactions are still bad. Initially Gears 5 was pushing their iron currency, but then later changed some items to cash only. Buying iron early on with cash while it was on sale only to see that some items went cash only, was pretty crappy. Gears 5 reminds me of a free to play game that survives, maybe thrives, based on some gamers buying micro transactions. Problem is, they sell the game for normal price, unless you use game pass. Maybe the fact that it released for free on Gamepass is why it was so stingy at launch with content. Expand

The game is incredibly glitchy. Some funny, others game breaking. Story good, albeit predictable and spoiled by the marketing materiel at points, and the gameplay is solid. The open world is empty, the puzzles are shallow. Graphics are good. The servers are kind of bad as of posting this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The coalition finally gave us the Gears of war game we deserve. If you're a Gears of war fan (old or new) you should definitely pick it up, it's the best Gears of war game since Gears 3 seriously. I just finished the first Act and i can tell you that this act alone beats Gears 4 in its entirety. Action
PACKED with great new mechanics (not highlighted in gameplay videos) exploration, the story looks interesting, with good dialogues, emotional moments, great score. And for the multiplayer, I just tested KOTH and Arcade, it plays way better than Gears 4.everyone think it is, her story is interesting.

The sheer amount of bugs in the game warrant significant score decreases alone. Since launch I have been unable to complete a full Escape or multiplayer match without being booted from the game due to the shoddy online service being woefully unprepared for the game's (staggered!) launch. The power taps in Horde mode often drop under textures making them impossible to interact with -- the problem sometimes corrects itself when they're destroyed and can be respawned. The same thing happens with some of the fortification textures. Campaign is not free from bugs either, from the infinite load bug (which requires a full console reset to fix) to the X interact not functioning bug.

That's before getting into the lackluster story and so-so gameplay that's more schizophrenic than ever. The Coalition couldn't decide whether they wanted a linear cover shooter (which is what made Gears popular in the first place) or an open world collect-a-thon, so they tried to incorporate both. Poorly. Cross-play multiplayer between console and PC in Gears 4 was a crapfest, so it comes as no surprise that all of the same issues (and more) exist this time around as well.

Sure, it's still decent, even with the political pandering being wielded like a bludgeon by the story writers, but is it on the same level as the original three? Not even close.

Unplayable at launch for PC players...

I already regret purchasing this title. I can think of nothing more frustrating than not being able to play your game when you intentionally setup your day to do so. Some of us don’t have 7 days to play because of work. Regardless of where things go from here, the experience is already a bad one.

Look anyone who likes Horde tends to compare it to Overwatch now in Gears 5. I'm sorry but I'm not looking to play Overwatch, I never will be looking to play it and I personally hate they are trying to put overwatch style mechanics into Gears.

I’ve been a playstation guy my whole life, Ive never owned an xbox, but thanks to Microsofts decision to make their exclusives available on pc, im able to experience this side of the tracks, and I was so excited to do so, I never played a Gears of War Game, so I sat down on youtube, got a story recap and hopped in…
This is a 3rd person shooter that takes places after the events of gears of war 3 and 4.. you get part of the story at the beginning of this game…
I wasn’t too attached or interested after the intial run down, but still hyped for the gameplay, the tutroal starts, the game is having me look up to determine my input preferences, that alone had me excited for how neat this game was going to be…
But I just never was blown away…
The story telling and level design is just so bland.. nothing took my breath away or made me feel like wow, this is what ive been missing all of these years… I do love the weapon variety.. but when it comes down to combat, controls here are so unintuitive that it just constantly pulls you out of the game…
its okay to have the same control scheme as call of duty… they have it down… I don’t want to hold a buttown down to run, let me just click my stick… the fast reload mechanic makes you take your eye off of the action.. all of the mechanic decisions just makes me feel like Im juggling as Im shooting.
Throughout this 12 hour campaign yo udo have a little squad with you that changes as the story progresses.. and these members can be controlled by real people locally and online…which is what I highly advise…
As the ai here is completely useless…
Dels the type of guy to yell “nows our chance shoot his back!” And not do ****
Amking these drawnout unfun boss battles even more unfun and frustrating at times as you die over and over…
Does the boss know where I am Del?
That’s probably because im the only one of use shooting any bullets.
Who isn’t useless though is your robot companion jack…
He sticks with you through the end as youre searching the world to upgrade his abilities that are unlocked as the story progresses…
back to the mechanics issues though.. shuffling through jacks abilities mid combat or even post or pre combat is unintuitive and feels like a jumbled jumbled mess
but jack is easily my favorite part of this game…
Its just a shame that jack is the only incentive to explore though…
The world and level design here in Gears 5 again is just so bland, so uninteresting and boring…
there are a couple open world sections of the game where you can go explore a little if youd like.. but again.. nothing about this world made me care to do so…
another giant issue I had with this games campaign is its awful progression indicators in story…
don’t dare pause the game and com back to it later, because youl lhave no idea what youre supposed to be doing… Gears 5 does put little markers on the map for you to go to… but I would much prefer they put them on items im supposed to be interacting with instead of running around in circles looking for a switch or door with a footprint or hand print on it… it breaks the flow, takes me out of the world.. its just bad game design…
And when it comes to performance, Gears 5 is awful on PC..
I ran into constant crashes and Act 2 made the game completely unplayable.. literally… after searching the internet, ive discovered that this is not an uncommon issue.. updating all of my drivers did fix the crashing issue for me, but the game still stutters when too much is going on on screen.. I missed half of the final cutscene because it was stuck… I had to go to youtube to rewatch the ending.. and wouldn’t you know their cutscene video was lagging too.
Online here is pretty typical fun third person shooter competitive stuff…
Entertaining, nothing really wrong with it but nothing here to keep me hooked.. I felt no urge to play after playing for review purposes.. again like the campaign really bland.
Gears 5 is a good game… But as a flagship exclusive from microsoft… I feel that xbox loyalists deserve better
Theres nothing here to incentivize a purchase other than the continuation of a beloved franchise…
And If you are buying to continue the story, I would recommend the xbox version over the pc so you can actually see it all.
    I give Gears 5
    a 7/10

New Gears does a great job of giving you a lot of challenges to take on together all while enjoying the beautiful and colorful landscapes peppered with the oil of drones you devastated and the blood of Locust you've fed some bullets. The plot is interesting enough, and the characters seem to behave very naturally which adds up to the credibility of the world.

But I simply couldn't enjoy the game because of how it's riddled with bugs and server issues. Every single session we had there were at least two times (often this number could go up to 5-6 times for a 2-hour session) we needed to restart the game because we've stumbled upon a game-breaking bug or the connection was lost.

I'm going to come back to the game in a month or two to finish the campaign and update the review. But for now, I can't recommend this title to anyone who was planning to enjoy it with a friend.

I've been in rooms where the mcguffin wouldn't activate, even though I could clearly see it. First time through on Horde mode, I got to wave 35 and the screen went blank and the game completely crashed. I would score this a 8-9 out of 10 if the servers were operational and the crashes were not happening. I will try this on PC, since I got the Game Pass.

Multiplayer on the other hands, I've always said the multiplayer is awful nothing changes at all. The type of gameplay is just a shotgun fest with no real skill, the different type of plays in the game i.e. mid-range and long-range combat seems to be completely ignored. The multiplayer is left very linear and unskilled in the action that you're forced to rinse and repeat i.e. hug round a blind sight and one shot someone who gets too close to you with the gnasher. The game will never really touch a high level remaining with this sort of gameplay.

Nearly a month after launch, Gears 5 is still very buggy, with characters getting stuck in scenery, easily getting sucked behind unfinished invisible barriers, and triggers that don't activate. The new 'third player' slot, Jack, is responsible for most of this, with his triggers not appearing sometimes, and his "floating" movement being so poorly programmed that he gets stuck on level terrain in places. Mind you, this is a character that doesn't ever touch the floor. Not to mention cutscenes that don't even trigger if you're playing as Jack.

The story is worse than Gears of War 3. There's no plot until over halfway through, and all the plot that's introduced about 4 hours into the game just works up the presumed protagonist for Gears 6. Gears 5 is so bad, however, I would think only Microsoft's cash injections could save the series from the scrap pile. In any case, the game introduces or reintroduces side characters, kills them off, tells you to be sad about it, and then they're never mentioned again. Rinse and repeat for nearly every chapter. Ultimately, it ends on the worst cliffhanger I have ever, ever seen.

The multiplayer is standard Gears of War fair with introduced casual modes that take the original Gears of War flavor of 'getting destroyed by the host' and uses server pockets to make the ping variation between players less frustrating. Being another third person game, however, with barely any competitive scene, I have no idea why you'd chose to play this over Fortnite, which runs on the same engine and has effectively the same gameplay besides building and "rodeo running."

Gears 5 is an odd thing; it's neither a grand leap forwards, nor a complete rehash of what came before, and therefore sits somewhere in the middle of the two. On the whole, the improvements do outweigh the negatives (the non-linear approach to campaign levels and the small changes to horde mode being some of the most notable), and while The Coalition still has some work to do to really make the series its own, this is a far bolder and more varied approach the relatively safe Gears 4. If you love shooters and you want a good place to jump back into the series, this is perfect place to work the rust out of your lancer.

Gears 5 proposes a breathtaking solo campaign and a generous array of multiplayer modes. Even if the recipe remains classic, we really want to go through with it. The characters are rather well written, the environments are often spectacular, and Jack the robot adds some salt to the gameplay. A visual feast and glorious action game that perfectly demonstrate Xbox One X's true power.
