Sure you’re going to swear at the bubbled enemies that need to be hooked before they can be attacked, and you’ll die to an ‘unfair’ trap a hundred times, but you learn your lessons each time, improving as you progress. With tons of hidden collectibles and procedurally generated levels, there’s a huge amount of replayabiilty within, even if you do master your hook and become the best pirate in the whole galaxy. For a small indie title, I came away impressed, not with just the quality of each aspect of Flinthook, but that in the end, it was simply fun to play, even with its frustrations.

Overall there is a lot of fun to have with Flinthook. If you like fast paced action games with a retro twist, then this is going to be one of those five star games that you’ll love. If you hate these type of games, and you know who you are, I would say give it a go and persevere, because it does reward the effort. There is a lot of game here for an indie title and even though I’ve put in many hours, I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface. This doesn’t matter though, because I know I’m going to keep coming back, just to put on my space hook, get me some space pirate booty and complete a Raid or two.

Flinthook is a roguelike that actually wants you to win. It's definitely a challenge, and it will throw everything it's got at you, but it makes sure you'll have a fighting chance. It's always giving you new opportunities to better yourself, both through practice and upgrades, and always has a little bit of health to offer when you when it's most needed. Once this game has its hooks in you, you'll always be coming back for more.

Flinthook is a very special game. We are a space bounty hunter who ends up with pirates, assaulting their ships. We will have to go through each room, procedurally created, to find the leaders of the bands. Its gameplay is excellent and will delight the fans of roguelike and Megaman.

In Flinthook you will not stop jumping and shooting while you are looting spaceships. The game seems to be a usual platform title but it has depth thanks to its random generation of scenarios. No battle will be the same as the previous one only its playable formula ends up generating a certain feeling of monotony.

A challenging platform game with roguelike elements.

The gameplay is great, with the feeling of making a bit of progress with each loss.

I almost beatThis game is a lot of fun, it is pretty much a rogue-lite but without so much randomization dictating your current playthrough. I almost beat the first boss (as well as the first three stages) without any upgrades. However, with upgrades it made the process a lot easier while also adding more enemies and changing the overall stages a good bit. I HIGHLY recommend this on the Switch but it can be good fun where ever you end up picking it up. Full Review »
