The plot follows Vinny, a millennial from London, joins a dating app for the first time while living in lockdown. From a choice of five interested women, the player can control who Vinny video dates and how he interacts with their very different personalities. The interactive story unfolds in a multitude of different directions, each exploring whether compatibility, chemistry and connection are still possible in a world where physical touch is no longer an option. Five Dates is a fast-turnaround rom-com project that has been conceptualized and developed during lockdown. Mandip Gill, who played Doctor Who’s companion in the last two series of the long-running UK show, is joined by Georgia Hirst (Vikings), Marisa Abela (who is a lead in Lena Dunham’s upcoming BBC project Industry), Taheen Modak (co-lead in Maisie Williams’ new Sky show Two Weeks To Live), and Sinead Harnett (UK singer/influencer) in the cast. FMV games are a little like Marmite; you either love them or hate them. But while others spin tales of murder mysteries, espionage or the end of the world, Five Dates is a grounded, human story about something we can all relate to: love. It’s simple, touching and heartening – and thanks to its excellent acting and low-key but on-point production, it’s a pleasure to experience. If you’re a softie at heart and love a good romance story, Five Dates will put a smile on your face.

Five Dates on Xbox One is a well-written, funny and endearing FMV game that manages to turn dating into a game without making it crass. Once you get over the awkwardness of choosing options based on what dates want to hear, you’ll be in the thralls of some fantastic actresses with engaging stories to tell. Swipe right on this one.

A game that was completely developed during the lockdown – and is about it – is worth the current price it is currently listed at. With a total of 762 scenes and several hours of FMV footage to be seen in the game, there are many hours here for the player to experience with various dialogue options leading to different responses and outcomes. I wouldn’t pass this game up if you’re a fan of the Visual Novel genre, as this game is not complicated and provides many laughs in a romantic comedy fashion while raising the bar for expectations for this genre.

Five dates enables player to experience digital dating during a lockdown through a full motion video interactive dating simulator. Quite similar to how we are living right now isn't it? The dating app is designed to match three dates for our millennial character Vinny then narrow it to two and then finally to one. The Five Dates are Maya, Grace, Saffron, Shaina, and Paige. There are ten outcomes to be found in total based on 5 dates and yes or no that's easy to do the math on I know. Maya is a girl who likes party, Saffron is a relaxed person with mystical energies, Grace is a serious lawyer looking for serious relationships, Shaina is a nurse looking for a family and Paige is a social Influencer. The gameplay is about making decisions via dialogue options, some of them are just about chatting and some of have big impact on the overall outcome of Vinny's dates. A single game takes about an hour or so but there are over seven hundred possible scenes to view so you can go back and restart the game many many times, you can skip the scenes you have already viewed if you prefer as well which is nice. The acting of the cast is decent they do their best but sometimes you can see unrealistic reactions and a few occasions of awkward writing but when you consider how quickly they developed Five Dates in lockdown it is normal. Five Dates is a fun experience but not a remarkable one. FMV fans will rejoice and those that don't like FMV games probably wont play it. I do have to admit it's the most fun I've probably had since Night Trap on the Sega CD. That's kind of saying something since the Xbox has had some pretty decent FMV releases. Yes some were quite good as FMV experiences but maybe this one I just found to be more fun and less serious which allowed me maybe to not react as I would normally in the real world. This led to some good fun early on just trying to bomb my dates. then I went through saying what I think they wanted to hear. Then I went thru as I would actually answer the questions as myself. Comparing the outcomes was interesting and with so many scenes with only 5 people to date it's a fun experience just not an amazing game, if that makes sense at all. So I must rate the fun factor and fun is what gaming is all about in the end Xbox One or not. If I lived thru the Sega CD FMV days of Night Trap, I'm lucky to have my eyes survive to play this FMV experience right? I hope you got the joke there. I truly enjoyed Night Trap the graphics/video just didn't age well, and I think thats the only downside of any FMV game. However I did hear there was a Night Trap being released in 2019 for Xbox One but it may have gotten cancelled even though I would buy it again Wales Interactive (hint hint). Expand
