Looking past the new and interesting "The Journey" mode (which ends up lasting not as long as many might have hoped), the game suffers from frustratingly bland career mode options which seem to be left behind in development in the game each year. So what do EA do during the year they have to create their game? Yes, it seems that they have been able to upgrade their graphics to make the game look a little bit more bright and colourful, but honestly other than a few tweaks to gameplay to make it a more pacy experience, the game lacks any real innovation. I don't see how they can continue to push away from improving their game modes and adding beneficial new features. Why does customisation lack so much? Why can't we create our own teams in the game? Why not allow us to create a team that can be used in manager mode, or simply add the ability to customise kits and sponsors throughout the years in manager mode? These are only small details that could help the game out. The game could be expanded on so much more, yet the game is stuck in the past. Despite the large sale numbers, FIFA continues to disappoint with a real absence of any substance to keep you interested. Expand

The gameplay is honestly amazing and doesn't have many flaws, but if you play online, the scripting completely ruins the experience. I have never see such a scripted game in my entire life. Absolutely infuriating. Command lag, server side input lag, passes going astray or massively under hit. Playing this game is less enjoyable than catching gastric flu and being stuck on the toilet until you can only pass digestive juices. EA are a bunch of money grabbing con artists.

    Dissapointing

This should be FIFA 18 Beta. Everything has so much to be worked on it's insane. The Journey is the bigger dissapointment. He doesn't seem real and barely any of his teammates seem real either. Apart from Bernard and Gallo at the start. But Gallo seems to just dissapear and the only living characters seem to be your family, your agent, Danny Williams, Bernard and Walker.

The GAMEPLAY is awful too. It's so easy to pierce through the defense with just a few passes, and the defense don't have a chance. If you get close enough to the goalkeeper you should score, BPL teams are all that it takes to have a good team so there is no creativity in the squads this year at all. I'm in division 6 at the moment, but GOD have I hated playing this. This is a downgrade from FIFA 17.

Complete trash, whatever you do, do not buy. I have been playing every FIFA since '98, and I can say this is the worst one to date. Completely nonsensical, illogical AI and situations designed only to follow a script, care absolutely nothing about quality of the actual game. DO NOT SUPPORT this garbage, trust me.

I dislike the fact that my opponent can easily walk into my player and win every tackle, I dislike the fact that my full backs rush to play as a left/right midfielder, even when I have my tactics for them to stay back whilst attacking....

I dislike the fact that even though having people like fellaini in my team I'm being outmuscled by bloody Walcott! And the fact that mertesacker is outpacing mane/aguero/remy is utterly shambolic.
It doesn't matter on any goalkeeper you have it seems he could be a bronze 64 or a gold 88 he will somehow keep parrying shots to the opponents seconday striker for an easy tap in or failing that feel that scoring an own goal would suffice instead.

This game is dead what's worse is that I hate pes also so this year with "modern warfare" you know the one that should be "modernised"....but instead is set in bloody space and has no relevance to modern warfare whatsoever, games seem to be on a decline modern warfare....crap....pes....crap....Fifa 17....shocking

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. How a game that is released year after year after year can still have the same faults it had a decade ago is astounding. Instead of fixing issues with the game, EA have added half-baked features like the journey. Unskipable cutscenes in the match. Players taking a lifetime to get up, when there is an opportunity for an easy goal, because of some scripted nonsense. The physics in the game are poor at best.
The only consideration EA seems to have is for ultimate team, because thats where they make the most money, forget the people that only want to pay for the main game, why care about them. they've already paid. I've heard people praise the journey mode, and at first it seemed okay, but it became clear that what you do is irrelevant, you could score 15 goals a game and still be on the bench, still sent out on loan, because "you're not ready". It is scripted nonsense, nothing you do makes a difference, your responses, fiery, cool or balanced, make no difference to the story. I know this because, out of curiosity, after completing it once I decided to play through it again just to see how the story could be different. It wasn't, I chose a different club, a different position, and went for all fiery responses instead of cool/balanced. Everything was the same. You get told your wages and value at the end of each match, its pointless information, you can't spend your money on anything. The only choice I got all season was what colour boots I wanted to wear. Towards the end of my first season I was 26 points behind the team in first (I was at leicester), and 4 games before the end of the season a random, never before seen, woman comes into the dressing room to give everyone a pep talk about how if they can just win the last few games they will be champions. How everyone in the room could be heroes that go down in history, giving the fans of the club something they had never had before. Clearly this woman is awful at maths, because we didn't have 9 games in hand. Once the season was over there was a scene where Alex is moping around upset because of just how close he had come to winning the league, losing it on the last day. We finished 6th, 24 points behind. Then thats it, 1 season, thats your lot, it then tells you to carry the journey on in ultimate team. It was at this point that the constant mentions of chemistry throughout the season sunk in. It's just a marketing ploy to get the few people that aren't playing ultimate team to start doing so. If not for a morbid sense of curiosity I would have put the game down after about 4 hours. The only redeeming factor is that the skill games are alright, but they've hardly changed too.

So I finally decided to buy a fifa game after years of playing FM i just wanted something bit easier and fun, but i have a rule of not buying EA games because of the cashin approach to making games. but as they're one of only 2 who make football games i decided to give it a try.

my overall feeling is its typically mediocre and scripted, it looks fine but once you start playing the frustrations come to light.
its trying to simulate football rather than be fun,
defending is so frustrating, watching opposition just walk through your players even though the ball is right there and your player kicks it but nothing happens.
and the reverse is annoying you turn away from the opposition but they're able to just tackle regardless if you keep yourself between them and the ball.i think i made 1 successful tackle every game and missed every other despite getting my self right next to the ball.
its feels like a dice role more than a mechanic.
also ive played over 40 games 33 in FUT and the rest in career and only had 3 free kicks and 1 penalty, the AI never gets fouls called against them but i always get fouls for any tackle, **** annoying. but 3 free kicks in over 40 games isnt right!

and the controls aren't consistent, I was practicing penalties with a good player with high rating.
and i would press the same direction and almost the same power around 2 bars and the ball direction would vary wildly. sure small amounts but not that much. and im not complaining because i was bad or couldnt win often, i had a record of 30 wins and 2 losses, its because those wins felt like it was more the AI allowing me to win and when i lost it felt like i couldn't win no matter what i did. its scripting basically.

but the MT are the worst sin, not that they exist but i have never bought stuff with MT before and for once tried it thinking it would be worth it, spent $25 NZD and got nothing, NOTHING!
whats the point if i get better cards just playing the game normally.
i wasn't expecting PTW but i was expecting a player over 85 at the least from the 5-6 packs i opened. never again in any game will i buy MT. NEVER!

I should have got PES but the lure of playing as ozil or sanchez got the better of me.
overall very mediocre, and not fun to play. frustrating and scripted.

FIFA 17 also has the worst input response time of any game I've played, which for a game which should be fast paced, is unacceptable. The amount of weight you put on a ground pass is almost entirely irrelevant, with players massively overshooting passes, losing possession beyond the players control. Now let's talk lag; it's worse than it's ever been, which on FIFA's standards is unbelievable. It is clear that FIFA 17's menus routinely drop below 20 FPS, making it very choppy, it simply looks cheap. The lag is also from the terrible matchmaking, which is inexcusable considering the funds EA have to spend on servers, as well as the tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of other players to match with, getting matched in a game on a 2 bar connection is ridiculous.

Somehow, Pro Clubs still has the same matchmaking system that it has had for years, I won't get into it, but it is idiotic, and lazy on EA's part.

There are more problems with this game, but I am done spending time on anything to do with such a worthless game. Maybe for FIFA 18, they'll wait until they actually finish the game before they release it.

Now, unfortunately, the cons: Virtual Pro is gone! What the hell EA? I can think of no reason why this was taken out, other than they felt it conflicted with The Journey. So no virtual pro customization, no gameface. Major screwup. Also, set pieces are abysmal. How these made it out of testing I have no idea, but penalties, corners and free kicks have been reworked and are now terrible. Particulary corners where the target moves around of its own volition, I thought the whole idea was to be able to target where you want the ball to go, but no. Free kicks are shocking as well, you cannot now tell where you are aiming.

It looks like most of the focus was on The Journey, which although interesting, does not have replayability and is not really a major game mode. Other than a few tweaks and wrecking the set piece system this is just FIFA 16 in new drag, with all the same problems that had. Its PES for another year for me then.

Now it's time for the annual pro evo comparison.
Does FIFA have deep a deep customisable tactical mini game that really lets you stamp your mark on a team? Of course not, it's the same as all the other years.
How about being able to play the ball exactly where you want it to go based on your skill? nope it's like a magnet ball, the same as all the other years. And the passing has a slight delay... Which for any football game lover, such as myself is a cardinal sin.
Do players still randomly fall over, yep of course they do.
Do the players look better than they do in PES 17? No not even slightly, in FIFA they honestly look like clay models. The sweat and dirt effects and how the pitch rips up looks really good though.
The journey is a welcome addition and is really fun.... Until you have to play some football, I feel they have tried to hard on the journey and making the visuals look like sky sports. Doing that they forgot about the important bit.... The football.

I'm sure if you haven't tried this years edition of PES you can find some enjoyment in this, but after playing PES 17 you notice that FIFA 17 is lacking the love of the game which PES totally has.

Konami knocked it out of the park with pro evo this year and it was up to EA to try and win back the real football lovers. But they haven't, rather than fix the issues that have been annoying total football lovers since 12, they decided to try a distraction technique which, while at the moment seems to be working. In 4 months down the line when Alex Hunters journey is a distant memory, will I still be playing FIFA 17? No.

Sure, PES 2017 may once again rule the play through the midfield, but FIFA 17 has so much to offer off the pitch that it’s difficult to not be satisfied. As long as you can get your head around the possession-focused style of play in FIFA, you’ll have no qualms with its gameplay, but it’s everything else that really sells it this year.

The impact of changes (new engine, story mode) is not so crucial at the end, especially for the course of matches themselves, but it doesn't change the fact that FIFA 17 is the nicest, funniest and, regarding the content, also the richest game in the whole series. It's just not a revolution. [Issue #268]
