For whatever reason this game has drawn a lot of false reviews…most likely placements from competitors. I played the Alpha, Beta and just got through playing 3 straight hours of custom games (where you can be the monster and still chat with your friends) and me and my friends had a blast!! The matchmaking is fast, the maps are great, the gameplay is fluid, the various roles complement each other very well. It is true you must like cooperative, team-based play because that is what this game is all about. And it is definitely best to play with your mic turned on so that you can communicate with your teammates. Also, for some reason many reviews are comparing this game to Titanfall…they are not even in the same league. If you are a hunter, then Evolve forces you to play as a team if you want to win…and if you are the monster then your strategy is to escape, evolve, and then kill all of the hunters. In Titanfall you can around and Rambo…no need to play as a part of the team at all. Don’t fall for all of these negative reviews…they are from people who haven’t even played the game and for some reason are trying to damage Evolve’s reputation. Evolve is in fact great cooperative based fun!!! Expand

It's not a 10 and it's certainly not a 0. How can any game be a zero especially on day 1? Come on guys - be rational and give it a chance.

It's a fun game - good class abilities with some interesting characters. The monsters are fun and varied enough for variety. The maps are cool and alien with some pain in the ass wildlife - just like it should be. The DLC is kind of a suck but

The DLC is kind of a suck but don't buy it if you don't like it..... Pretty simple to me. Like it or not DLC is here to stay because quite frankly - people are ponying up the cash.

Played in the Alpha and Beta. Love the game. I don't believe in 10s. Perfect games just don't exist in my opinion. I'd give an 8.5 if I could. The game is exactly what it says it is. No broken promises. The game meets ALL of the expectations it set for itself.

A lot of people have clearly reviewed the game without playing it. Which is kinda silly. They say they played and got bored

A lot of people have clearly reviewed the game without playing it. Which is kinda silly. They say they played and got bored quickly and then they go on a rant about DLC. Reviewing a game you have never played because you don't like the way the company does DLC is ridiculous.

The game is balanced pretty well so far. Last I checked the win ratio was 50.1 to 49.9 favoring hunters.

For 60 bucks you get 12 Hunters divided into 4 classes. Each Hunter has 3 unique abilities and 1 class ability. You get 3 Monsters with 4 unique abilities. Monsters spawn stage 1 and can go up to stage 3. Each stage gives you three ability points to put into your abilities. Each ability can have a max of 3 points in it and you get to choose how to spend your points based on how you like to play. You get 12 maps and 4 Game modes. All future maps and game modes will be released for FREE.

The DLC is honestly a bit of a pill. Each future Monster will be 15 bucks and each hunter will be 7.50. The Hunters can be purchased in a pack for 25 bucks. I purchased on xbox live and got the Digital Deluxe version for 80 bucks. That gave me the 4th Monster and and the next set of hunters. You will see A LOT of people complain about the Day 1 DLC monster. There isn't one. The only thing that was available Day 1 were skins which I honestly do not care about. These prices are a bit high. But keep in mind that all the future maps and modes will be free. TRS did this so the community would not be divided up. I know I paid 15 bucks for 4 maps in Halo 3 or 4 and only liked 2 of them. How is that not a bigger rip off? And if my friends did not have those maps we could not play together. Let's say that I use the 4th monster for my game but I have to quit or get disconnected and you join to replace me but you did not have this new monster, YOU will get to play with him. Same goes for all future hunters. If you join in progress on a character you did not buy then you will be able to finish the match as them.

The game REQUIRES teamwork on a certain lvl. A good monster will beat you if you do not work together and communicate. This is not a point and shoot kind of game. You do not all have machine guns to blast the monster with. The Medic for instance generally does not do much direct damage because it is their job to HEAL you.

I would not trust reviews from people giving 10s and posting a one line review. I would also not trust the people giving the game 0s and 3s and 4s. A game not being to your liking does not make it horrible. A fair number of the low scores are from people who did not play or did not play correctly and decided to fight the monster 1 on 1. Do not trust reviews (for any video game) if at any point the review said they quit after 1 match or 10 minutes or even an hour. Most games are not that easy to get into. Someone who writes a review on anything after doing anything for 10 minutes is just trying to spread negativity or ignorance.

People like to say that Evolve is not a full game. What makes a full game? I beat Bio Shock 2 in 8 hours and the multiplayer was a joke but I loved the 8 hours I put into it. I had no regrets. The average time for a lot of story mode only games is like 10-12 hours in my experience and the stories a lot of the time are not as good as the game play. Xbox One actually tells you how long you have spent playing a game. Last night when I found that feature I found out that I had played Evolve for 22 hours already. In 3.5 days. In the beta I estimate that I played for about 24 hours in a 4 day period. A game not having a story mode does not mean it is broken or half a game. Mario Kart games do not have real story modes and people eat them up. 60$ for 10 hours of 3rd person shooting or 60$ for a CoD game that comes with a 6-8 hour story that you may never play (I know I never played them). I am not getting down on CoD either. I played it a lot when I was younger but I only played it for online multiplayer. No one really buys those games for the story. If Evolve had a well made 5 hour story people would still find something to complain about.

Watch some twitch streams and YouTube videos. If you like what you see then maybe buy it. I have never reviewed a game before. I wrote this because in 6 months when I have beaten Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight I will want to have strangers to play with or against in Evolve.

    Summary:
It is not pay to win.
There is no significant DLC out yet (Only skins.)
20 hours of Multiplayer seems to balance out well against 12 hour story mode games.
    Free Maps and Modes forever.
The DLC is pricey but not mandatory and not so bad when you factor in free maps and modes.
I dunno. Just make an informed decision.

I didn't learn to appreciate the depth of flavor of, say, a truffle crusted piece of salmon, or the multi-faceted dynamic of a good wine until I had grown up and left the crystalline childish desire for pure sugar, salt, and fat behind.
I have over 200,000 online kills in the Halo series, and I played Left 4 Dead 2 for years (and still do, very rare to keep an old game around this long.) I did my time in the dopamine laced halls of gaming and now I have little patience for filler and have grown to enjoy only the best of the best in most things I am enthused about.
Evolve is new. It is fresh. It is not what you are used to, and - like chess - at first glance, can look boring, or too different, or weird, or challenging to be able to enjoy, and if your gaming diet still consists of Cheetos and Mountain Dew, you probably won't care for it because it's simply not designed to appeal to a simple, CoD, pick up and play style. It requires work to enjoy, and time spent learning new skills to glean the true entertainment Turtle Rock was shooting for. As did the Halo sniper rifle, Mario's super jump, and Dig Dug's air pump, you needed to put time in to fully appreciate the mechanics.
Evolve is excellent, because it's deep. The different combinations of Hunters vs the different Monsters lends the gameplay to many, many variations of experiences.
After reading a few reviews here, let me address a few concerns.

#1 Drop day DLC: There are no Pay to Win items, so this is moot. Spare me your empassioned gamer rage. Game making is a business, and Turtle Rock and 2K have every right to deliver options - OPTIONS - to players who want to throw down a few bucks to stand out from the crowd. Until you start a gaming company and spend 100 million+ on developing a new IP (finally!) you have no basis for your rage.
#2 Controls are slow and clunky: When I first learned to walk, I was pretty slow and clunky too, until I spent time getting my own controls down. The more you level up and get the rhythm of the individual character's movement down, the faster you will traverse the terrain.
    # 3: No story: This is totally false. Look, the focus of this game is gameplay, and has been from day one. What Evolve did was reveal the story through bits and pieces of pre game chatter, hinting at the greater picture. It's like defining a shape through shadows instead of light. What you DON'T see helps define what is there.
And if you want real back story, some of the Hunter's stories are available on Turtle Rock's forums and they are very well written. This isn't Mass Effect, but it ain't Destiny either.
#4 Too much running around, not enough fighting: Not enough Mountain Dew! Not enough Cheetos! If you can't understand pacing and balance, I can't help you here. It's a great balance of anticipation and manic, emersive, totally over the top fighting. When playing with good, thoughtful players, the Monster doesn't have much time to hide...
#5 It's excessively team oriented: Duh.
#6 I hate team oriented: Then go find an FPS Deathmatch somewhere and enjoy that cotton candy. You earned it!

This game isn't for everyone. I like a deep experience, with it's 30 seconds of repeated fun over and over. Evolve does this well, and it's a rock solid start to a new direction. I have great matches over and over, with different experiences depending on my role and character. My personal fav Monster is Wraith, personal fav Hunter is Caira, with Parnell a close second.
But it took time and effort to get to that level, and no one says you have to do it.
I still occasionally like Mountain Dew...
...but man, wine is so much better.

A multiplayer-centric title that pits four hunters against one big monster in 4 vs. 1 matches. It's a game that requires intelligence and teamwork. The balancing is impeccable. Unfortunately quite a few flaws get in the way of what is otherwise an enjoyable game.

The best way to play is with friends. Teaming up with your buddies to hunt down a monster controlled by another person can be a blast. Especially since you can coordinate with them. With each character class playing a different role in the fight, making use of all of their abilities effectively is the key to victory. If everyone just goes in guns blazing, ignoring strategy and not helping one another the team is sure to lose against even a decently skilled monster player. This makes just jumping into a random match online hard. You have no idea if you are going to get paired with other players who know how to utilize their class, have mics, or are interested in helping out the team at all. When you are flying solo playing as the monster is the way to go.

Despite their intimidating size and powers, playing as any of the monsters requires just as much strategizing as the hunters. Monsters start off rather weak. Stealth is a big part of playing as a monster. Get spotted by the hunter players early on is sure to lead to a quick death. You have to stay a step ahead of the competition and hunt down local wildlife in order to "evolve" and get stronger. Once you do you can take the fight to them. It's really cool how things like making sure to not leave tracks or sneaking past birds in order to not leave the hunters a trail plays a role in it all.

Again, the balance is truly fantastic. Even facing off against a fully evolved monster and winning is possible. Same with fighting four enemies at once as a monster. The game strikes a perfect balance between over-powered and outnumbered. Matches are decided by player intelligence and skill.

Multiplayer is definitely the focus of this title. The single-player options are limited and rather boring. All you get is bot matches. It means you have something there is you just don't do multiplayer, but it raises the question why bother? If you aren't a multiplayer fan then this isn't a game for you. However that brings up one of the game's biggest problems; there aren't many people online anymore.

And who could blame them considering the rather bare bones offering we are given? With only a handful of modes there isn't much to sink your teeth into. That wouldn't be so bad if matches had a regular frequency of being fun. Like I said before, playing with friends does a lot for this game. There's no guarantee you are going to be thrown into a fun match with strangers.

The main mode of the game is "hunt mode." It makes up the core of the game and is easily the most fun option. Four hunter players try to track down the monster player while he or she tries to avoid them while hunting animal in order to evolve and then kill them. One side comes out on top and that's the side with the best strategizing and skill. The mode soars with friends and lags a bit when playing with random people.

The other two modes are evacuation and arena. Evacuation consists of five matches, each with different objectives. The next match is always effected with random elements based on whoever won the last one. Unfortunately the side with the most wins can kind of stack the odds in their favor by getting more changes that lean in their favor. It's not too bad though, but given the range of strategies that must be adopted based on what objectives pop up, it's another mode best played with friends.

Arena is a close-quarters mode that is focused more on direct action. However given the much smaller map size it is kind of skewed in the hunters favor. The aren't any hunting option so evolving isn't an option for monster players. Luckily monster players are already given the stage two evolution (there are three in total) so it's not terribly unbalanced. I had no problems pulling off a win as a monster. This mode may ditch the strategy required in the other modes, but it's the way to go if you are looking for more immediate and direct action.

Evolve is an ambitious and unique title that ultimately has enough flaws to keep it from reaching it's full potential. It's a blast with friends, but suffers when it comes to random matchmaking with strangers. There is also a noticeable dearth of content. Yet, despite it's flaws Evolve is still mostly fun in what it does offer. It might not be the next Left 4 Dead, but there are reasons to check it out if you are interested in the content. Just keep in mind it may leave you wanting more.

    I give the game a 7.5/10.

The games use of team work does not only make the game more fun in general, but I feel gives a much greater sense of accomplishment to the players as well versus just playing with some other computers/robots. Sure it does kind of stink that you have to pay for SOME extra DLC later, but that is a given with any game you buy today I.E. Map Packs, Season Passes, New DLC weapons. Hello people this has been happening far before Evolve. I myself can say I will be paying for any new DLC coming forth as I am sure this game is going to sky rocket even more and the game has the ability to become a classic like Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress...... With that being said I can express the amount of fun it is to play this game with your friends and the amount of laughs we have had together sharing stores and facing off against one another. The graphics and play style with the game is completely new and the world looks stunning and is always throwing surprises at you even after you feel like you have dominated the map it can still turn for the worst no matter if your a monster or a hunter. Along with the draw of friend fun, the want to complete challenges is a lot of fun for those of you completion-ist out there like myself. Ive played for 128 hours so far and im still addicted to Evolve. I dont know how they did it, they made a game that is purely multiplayer, even offline with bots controlling other characters, only has 5 different play modes, has no plot or campaign, and made it a masterpiece. The hunt of tracking down and fighting a giant beast is genius and epicly executed.

After a briefing on your objective on a space craft like ship, and air dropping onto the planet Shear, the first moments of the hunt begin. And these moments are IMPERATIVE. The monster is weak in its starting form but can and will prey on the wildlife to eat them and gain stronger from each kill. As it shreds through the environment, you must track this beast like any hunter. It's tracks or footprints can be followed, birds scattering in the air, the sound of growls or intimidating pound of its gait are just a few primal methods of tracking. You can also use advanced technology such as drones, audial alarm like sensor devices, a tracking dart pistol, or a pet trap jaw named daisy, which is basically an iguana dog that leads you to the beast. You must race to apprehend it to entrap it into a mobile arena, a device that creates a dome force field trapping the monster in a small zone with you. Which sounds like the last thing you'd want to do, but catching it at its weaker stage makes the difference of winning and losing. As soon as it evolves to stage three, or even stage two, the challenge is two fold. It will try and evade and escape your efforts to go after it until it becomes immensely stronger, twice as tall and twice as powerful, and then the hunters become the hunted.

There are 12 characters not including the DLC hunters. 4 classes: assault which deals most of the damage, hunter which tracks and traps the monster in the dome, support which provides aid to hunters in form of "buffs" such as shielding allies from damage or amplifying damage dealt to monster, and finally the medic which keeps the hunters alive. All are uniquely diverse and fun to play as, and the 3 of each class are also surprisingly diverse all with different weapons and abilities. You level up as you play, after each match, and earn upgrades, like damage or defense boosts, one of which can be chosen to strengthen your character. Character mastery, 3 stars to be fulfilled in each character (for example as assault you need to deal X amount of damage) for your primary and secondary weapon and class ability. After gaining a star in each you will unlock the next character and a stat boost to each item. This system creates a huge replay value and will have you addicted to boosting and leveling your hunters.

There are many maps and 3 monster, and one DLC monster. They are exhilarating to play as you leap from cliffs and annihilate and feast on wildlife to evolve as goliath, who brutally fights with primal tactics like throwing a massive boulder, leap smashing, fire breath, and charging. You can fly through the air and bombard hunters with a massive lightning bolt attack, kamikaze like close range explosive blast, spitting out a mine like blob that follows anyone near and explodes, and shout a hurricane force whirlwind to push anything in your path back sending them flying. As wraith teleport warp around your domain and outsmart any challenge by creating a duplicate decoy of the wraith which attacks anything jear and draws fire away while you are enveloped with invisibility. Unleash supernova and slash and rip apart anything in your path with super speed and dozens of attacks in seconds. Abduct and fly away with a hunter far from their team to kill them alone. And warp forward and kamikaze explode into foes. All monsters are unique and fun to play as and playing smart aka outsmarting hunters by having them follow your tracks nowhere by walking to a point and stealth backtrack leaving no tracks to ambuse them from behind.

Overall one of the funniest games I've ever played and in still can't get enough after 120+ hours of playing. In short if you like shooters or hell, even video games in general this is a MUST BUY!!!

Oh and this needs to be said........... If you don't have the money for DLC or don't want, don't buy it. People are giving this extremely low scores, and why? Because they disagree with the idea that you should pay for additional content of the game. I personally wouldn't pay $2.99 for a weapons skin for a character, but I'm not going to get emotionally charged and lash out and the developers by submitting an abysmal review. I am so appreciative for the DLC, which has added so much to my experience, and renewed enthusiasm in the hunt, but it did come at a price and a rather high one at that. If you have the money for it then its totally worth it, if you don't then don't buy it. Better they create the option to purchase extra content for the game then to not add anything.

The game definitely changes as you improve, and get more familiar with your abilities and tactics. Whether you lik ethe DLC system, or the cost, blame that on the distributor. The developers made an excellent game. Still a few bugs that will get ironed out, and balancing will continue (and already has been implemented since beta), so i'm looking forward to the future of this game.
When you start out, you'll find it difficult to hunt down a good monster before it has evolved, as you improve, so do your tactics, ad you'll get much better at it. This game improves as YOU improve. It has a lot more depth then people are realizing since they apparently have a knee jerk reaction to anything that isn't baby hand holding.
If you like thinking coop games, rather then mindless shooting and camping, this is a goer.

Dlc is there so that if you like playing a certain class or monster, you can buy a different skin and change up the way your class or monster looks instead of the same regular skin, essentially making that class or monster your own. That rant aside, I'm a little disappointed with this game. GREAT idea. I was tempted to give this game an 8 just because the concept is cool and I feel like anything new and different should be lauded in a gaming industry that wants to crank out something half-baked and then charge me for content that should be included. I didn't give the 8 because 2K took a cool concept, paired it down and included about $60 of Day One DLC. Now I wish I hadn't bought this. Clearly, the rest of the game will be issued over the next six months at $20 a pop, and by the time their is a complete experience, you'll only be able to enjoy it with a bunch of rich 15 year-olds with unlimited access to mommy's Amex, because everyone else will have long since tired of what amounts to a really well done demo.

In terms of actual game play, the monster is cool in theory, but the controls just don't feel tight. Maybe I'm just not very good, but the close combat feels chaotic to the point of being incomprehensible. Maybe that was a conscious design choice but I feel like my input is disconnected from what's going on in the game. Playing as the hunter is pretty boring. March around following prompts for 5 minutes. Spam attack a huge target until the monster escapes, repeat until you get bored and pop Dragon Age back in.

FFS, people. Get a grip. The DLCs have little to no impact on the game. 90 percent of them are cosmetic vanity items and they don't "flesh out" the game as much as many of you pretend.

The game play is fun but not without issues. I'll try to keep it short:

    PROS:
    - Thrill of evasion or hunting when in well-balanced groups
    - Asymmetric design
    - Large levels and intricate environments
    - Hunters must work as a team to survive
    - Lots to learn for every hunter and monster
    - Games with friends are often a blast because of a natural tendency to work together and die together
    - Periods of quiet searching moments are punctuated by intense "I SEE IT! I SEE IT!" moments and the thrill of the hunt.

    CONS
    - Steep learning curve; bad monster or bad hunters means unsatisfying, sometimes boring games. Those intense "I SEE IT" are missing in favor of a yawn-fest.
    - Excessive loading screens and downtime between games, sometimes I wait through two minutes of loading screens to drop into a game in its final minute.
    - Hunters must work as a team to survive; strangers don't always work well together
    - Games with pubbies are a mixed bag tending toward the negative experience. Game doesn't offer enough incentives to work as a team, other than winning. Why not include extra upgrades and incentives?

Silly review points that other review make that actually don't matter:

"The game's too repetitive." It's a team-based shooter by the L4D developer. If you thought L4D was "too repetitive" because every level was about shooting zombies, then you probably won't like this, either. The hunters are asymmetric--something L4D never attempted, and there are so many nuances to play that many players will never bother to learn them.

"The DLCs are ridiculous." It's not pay to win. All map add-ons will be free. You can buy an extra monster and some extra hunters, but NONE OF THESE ARE NECESSARY TO ENJOY THE GAME. The people that go on and on about this are just reading headlines and not thinking about their words. If you're a completionist freak that simply MUST buy every DLC, skin, and medal, then guess what, it's YOUR problem. not theirs.

"The environments aren't interactive enough." Meh. Find me a shooter with interactive environments that's not called Battlefield. This isn't a team-based military blow-s***-up shooter. It's methodical and slower-paced than most other shooters. They took risks with this title, rather than just make another CoD or Battlefield.

"Content is poor and shallow." I'm not sure what this means. I think it's supposed to mean that there aren't many levels and the game play is too repetitive. I don't think these people have played the game, or they played it for five hours and then dismissed it because it wasn't CoD. Guess what: It's not CoD. The perfect game of Evolve has more quiet than firefights, with a slow build between each encounter. The worst game of Evolve has ten minutes of the hunters failing to find the monster until the end, or a monster that dies in the first three minutes. Most games fall somewhere in between.

Summary (I failed to keep this short):

BUY THE GAME if you liked L4D or prefer methodical, team-based games. This is a thinking man's shooter, not a twitchy "who can put the crosshairs on the target faster" shooter. And I'm not saying those shooters are somehow less, just that they are different. Also buy it if you have a few friends online--friends make the game significantly better.

IGNORE THE GAME if you are impatient, hate learning curves, or don't have many friends online. Do not buy it if you prefer adrenline-shooters with unrelenting action because Evolve won't give you that. It's a slow burn--the monster has to evade the hunters to be successful for the first few minutes, and it will succeed about half the time!

The game consists of several gamemodes; Hunt, Nest, Rescue and Defend. All of these gamemodes are then putogether in a playlist-type mode call evacuation which consists of 5 days, the first of which is always hunt and the fifth is always defend, but the other 3 are voted for by the players. When the game says there are 800,000 different options and outcomes, that is true, I must have played around 30 evacuation matches (yes they're very long, I'll get to that) each of which has had different map effects to keep the game fresh and interesting. the time it takes to completely max out each character and monster in the base game will most likely take you over 100 hours, if that's not worth £40/$60 to you, no offence but that's cheap.
However, there are some issues with the game, it does require patience, as I've said evacuation matches can go on for up to an hour, but you get a good XP payout so it is worth it. If you're not someone who goes for the 100%/Plat then you're going to run out of things to do around 50 hours into the game, but even then that's over an hour per £.
This game is for multiplayer fans, if you do not like multiplayer, there is a single player mode, but I'd imagine it would get boring very fast. The future dlc has been quite controversial, but I don't see it that way as there's more than enough base game content to justify £19.99 for the season pass later down the line. They also have said that they'll be giving out new maps as free dlc in order to prevent the playerbase from splitting, which is pretty damn good. Overall 8/10

There are a lot of so called gamers sadly lying about playing Evolve and giving it a lower score than it deserves. I liken the people complaining about its single player content to the people who buy a fighting game for its single player. For what's actually offered, there are enough characters and monsters to unlock and master that makes the experience well worth the purchase. If you are not a fan of reall team based strategic gameplay, mastering each role including the monster like you would if you played fighters seriously. Then this game might not be for you. Going though people main gripes about this game DLC while the monster DLC is expensive none of the DLC is needed nor will it make the game any bigger. everyone is still able to play with everyone and new stuff will come to you the only difference that cool new hunter you wont play as but maybe your friend got it and he can play as it with you.

as for the game itself it does center on both sides knowing what to do which in todays world might be asking alot. When you play online with randoms on your hunter teams many times people like to run off alone or play it like their playing a deathmatch game of some other shooter and that spells disaster for the entire hunter team. On the flip side playing as the monster players dont realize that the monster relies on stealth in the beginning to get stronger in order to be the powerhouse that can on the hunters. When you get people who know what their doing though this game is fast thrilling and leaves you on the edge of your seat as you chase and fight it.

While some of the maps share a similar feel (forest at night by factory) most of them are different and they all have unique ambush spots bottlenecks and getaway routes

visually the game looks breath taking to really immerse you into the hunt and the audio is superb making you feel in the middle of the forest or wherever you may be.

People are complaining its not enough content for 60 bucks but if modern shooters such as battlefield and COD can get away with having generic stuff and guns that have been in games for years. then there's no reason evolve with 12 unique different characters and 3 equally unique monsters doesn't deserve the same.

on the subject of classes i have never played a game that has put as time into balancing character yet making each one epic and unique as evolve. each hunter plays differently even the ones in the same class. for instance medics Val is a nimble healer able to bend her healing ray around corners while also setting weak points on the monster and slowing him with darts. she cant really do damage but she can help the trapper chasing the monster and shes the best healer of the 3. Lazarus on the other hand is the worst (his only healing is the group heal they all get ) but he keeps people in the fight by being the quickest to revive and ability to revive people from death. He can still sets weakpoints but no darts instead he has a cloak allowing him to revive those that need it. finally theres caira a medic that actually packs a mean punch while also being able to heal. Her grenade launcher cant set the monster on fire and does a good amount of damage. In addition she can switch her launcher to fire healing bombs allowing for long range multi healing once you get the hang of it in combat. Finally she has a acceleration boost allowing all hunters around her to boost forward with increase movement to chase the monster. theses are just 3 of the 12 characters

with more modes coming and whats here being thrilling and exciting evolve is shaping up to be a great game. playing at launch had no issues (a rarity today) and its great to see a shooter not following the same overused model and actually giving us something new and unique

The developers were ahead in time with this game. This game is repetitively boring when in every round you chase the monster for 10+ minutes. Anyway, I believe if the developers keep this IP and do a Virtual Reality version 5+ years from now, the VR version would have the potential to be a hit.

While I will admit the gameplay is solid and the level design is fairly good it has the major problem of having huge signs saying "Hey I'm unfinished, look at me!" Many maps feel the same as the others, the monster skins are really half-assed and not worth the money(at least the 1st batch are), left trigger is set to eat and climb so every now and then instead of eating something you killed you'll just climb the wall instead wasting a few of the precious seconds you have. The hunters and monsters are balanced very well both against each other and among themselves. Each hunter and monster class brings its own set of skills to the table. For example the one monster is agile and has moderate health and armor but isn't good at causing large amounts of damage but has many aerial effect abilities and ranged capabilities, meanwhile another has very low health and armor yet is very tricky to track and is very good at escaping and taking down individuals. For the hunters one support is extremely effective as both a close-medium range combatant while another has skills and weapons more focused for long range. The gameplay is simply excellent hunters always have a chance if they know what they are doing and stick together and he monster always has a chance to win if they play smart. Hunters should always stick together because alone they are nothing the monster can insta-kill a lone hunter and so can many of the creatures around each area. The monster can be played numerous ways. Do you fill your armor and stalk the hunters early trying to sneak attack them, if you get detected do you just try to get away or do you run just far enough that you can kill something every now and then and eat and run? There are just such great options and these options are for every play style I can think of. One major issue though is that there is no story here, you are basically thrown in and told kill the monster or kill the hunters and that's it. Textures sometimes don't load(you will see them after a bit but until they pop you will see an untextured mess), sometimes they outright glitch in the middle of the game(only seen this for shadows and lighting so far) and the game has issues, such as the one that led me to write this review, that make the game outright broken. The one I speak of happened after I had taken out 3 of the 4 hunters, the problem was the final hunter was on top of an area that you aren't supposed to be able to get to(at least the monster can't) I spent 2 minutes trying to find a way up but there wasn't one so I just turned off my console and simply put, until a patch that removes this issue or any similar ones I will not play this game again. I would recommend this game, I would have given it an 8 out of 10 if it weren't for the issues I ran into. But until a few patches roll out, I can't recommend this game to anyone who has an issue with game breaking issues such as the one that led me to write this. Expand

The environments are lush, there are so many things that can alter the gameplay and trip you up. This game is well thought out and well executed except for a few things. I'm going to harp on these and then Ill get to why I love the game.

#1 DLC - Seriously? WTF The game comes out and same day they're already asking for more money for skins and other BS. This attempt at monetizing a game that has already been purchased by your customer is utter crap. I had pre-ordered before I heard about this bc I read so much about it in different gaming mags. no mention of the DLC crap platter. There's no campaign! Just multiplayer! Why nickel and dime your customers?!

#2 Level Grind - Why? With 12 characters why is the level grind so slow and ridiculous? Why even have it? I dont mind earning unlocks but this is a bit much and really really is annoying. However once you get past it the game opens up and the intricacies start to shine. Unfortunately some will not have the patience for this. Probably most that havent played the beta.

#3 Certain modes only in Custom - Again why?! My options are either just Hunt which lasts for anywhere from 5-15min or evacuate which goes thru all modes and takes a long while. I would like to play the other modes as a stand alone without having to get a friend online to play with me. I dont mind playing those with random strangers. Solo mode sucks.

    # 4 No consideration for the state of online play - This one really isnt there fault but is does hurt the game. It's difficult to find people with mics! People seemed to have stopped talking long ago bc they're tired of the 10yr olds screamin profanities into the mic or the dick wad that streams his music into the mic. Without people to communicate with the game gets boring bc there is no cohesion, no teamwork.

Why I still love the game - Despite these flaws once the grind is done with and the characters are fleshed out seeing which hunters. trappers, medics, and supt work together best is and building that team and learning to work together gives you a chance at kicking that Monsters ass. When everything comes together its great. I've been lucky enough and spent enough time searching for like minded gamers, some who I don't even know to meet up and play which also allows us to explore the custom modes and play stand alone modes not readily available. This allows us to get better at those modes for when we have the time to sit down and run thru the gauntlet that is evacuation. When all this comes together the game is amazing fun!

This game was heavily advertised as multiplayer from day one - what do you expect from a 4 vs 1 console game that relies on teamwork? Teamwork with the AI would be a massive shortfall on the developers part and I think they have executed it really well! This type of game thrives on the mechanics of multiplayer and the unlocks and upgrades work as promised. You learn one guys skills then unlock others with all new skill sets - I have just upgraded the Trapper and am now learning the changes to my role. Its just enough change to be challenging, but not enough to make it punishing.

The story line could be better, but its far from weak. If you bought this game for a fun, fast paced multiplayer experience you wont be dissapointed. The promise of future DLC can easily fix this and all those complaining about the DLC are going very OTT. There is no in-game benefit to the micro-transactions (mostly cosmetic) so these are just to buy 'if you want' and are not required to become a better player.

Any game hyped as much as Evolve is going to get a hate crowd at launch - my advice is to ignore them and have your own experience. Many of these negative reviews say "I got bored after a few hours" or "Its multiplayer only" - I'd ask those people to research a game before they buy it as all of this was very clear at launch. I knew exactly what I was buying and think Evolve is freakin brilliant. The 4vs1 concept is a brilliant leap in the gaming industry.

I've played many hours already and would highly recommend it - if you like multiplayer then its a 'must buy' in my opinion. I'm going to give it an 8 purely based on the fact that there is more to come, but I hope the servers stay full as I feel I will be playing Evolve for a long time! :) :)

To get the most out of this it takes time to play it and learn different tactics and strategies. For example, as hunters do you fan out and comb a specific area together or do you split up, finding the monster more quickly but increasing the risk of being obliterated by being caught out on your own. Granted, it won't be for all type of player but if you are prepared to play the game as intended, talk to your teammates and actually spend time to get acquainted with the game then you will enjoy it. Any low scores coming in from people who have played it once and didn't get on with it are invalid, as is the preposterous notion of giving a game a '0' because of not agreeing with the DLC (the vast majority of which is optional customisation There is one set of hunters and an extra monster coming for about £20 - the rest is alternative skins and lets face it, that stuff is pretty common place these days). This is a thinking persons game and one that does benefit playing with friends. If you have regular gaming buddies then I would say this squeaks up to a 9. A little mentioned fact is that every new map will be free to everyone so I would say for the basic package this is a well rounded, enjoyable AND value for money experience. Expand

I had the standard pre-ordered at GS but then my brother gave me money he owed me so I used that $60 and figured, "well, I already $60 set aside for the standard. Might as well use 20 of it to get all the goodies.". With this being the case I didn't look TOO much into what I was getting, just knew it unlocked characters that I would've had to work for other wise.
With that out of the way, I get the frustration behind the DLC and all the add-on packs. However, this should not be getting hate. Game companies have been doing this since the 360's heydays. DLC is created when the budget allows, very few companies will start production of a product with money that isn't there.
Let's also look at the DLC that is causing such hate. Most of it is cosmetic, it's nothing you need to play the game. None of the DLC characters we're OP. In fact the characters that came with it seemed pretty OP comparatively. The DLC uproar is moronic, if you want more out of the game you will get it. I don't have the time it would take to dedicate to getting the characters that came with the LE version (another reason I bought them. But they don't drastically change the game at all.
With the controversy out of the way on to the actual game. The game is great, however watching it does NOT do it justice at all. You don't feel the fear of someone right behind you.
The intensity behind the split second life or death decisions you have to make. For instance, one v one against the monster is not a fight you will win, however if you see the monster running and you are the trapper you have a choice to make, peel off of the group and have them catch up so you can trap him, or wait for them to catch up and risk loosing the monster because your team doesn't utilize jetpack fuel efficiently. If you choose the former you will be trapped with him by yourself for a few seconds that will feel like hours if he pounces you. Its a very good game and unlike 87% of the releases this year, it does everything it promised to do. Turtle rock knows what they are doing, they are the reason Left for dead 1 is better than the sequel. These 4 on 1 scenarios seem to be very balanced. Just because the monster is level one does not mean it will be an easy fight. One key trait of the monster that I haven't seen mentioned to much is the maneuverability. The monster can get away from you fast, all of them can if played right so it is key that you keep an eye on it and as the trapper or medic keep him slowed and in your sights until you can use the dome. Another great thing about this game is that the AI is actually good. when playing against (as the monster) the AI works together and can be quite difficult to evade while trying to evolve. When playing as one of the hunters and the rest are AI it is also challenging. One thing of note though is that there were several occasions where I found the monster, shot him, trapped him, slowed him all while he just stood there. Slight bug that doesn't occur so often that it takes away the difficulty but it does slow down the pace of the game sometimes.
    TL;DR:
This game is solid, a great one of a kind multi-player experience. It is balanced in almost every scenario (INCREASE FLYING COOL DOWN FOR KRAKEN!) even when odds against you it is still doable.
Pay no mind nor money to the DLC if you don't want it. It is not required and does not make the game any better, just prettier.
I would advise buying it if you don't have the time to dedicate to unlocking all the characters.

I feel like they gave us a lot of content with this game. The monsters and other hunters are all unlockable via regular gameplay with a lot of bonus perks to unlock as well which allows a lot of different combinations and strategies to be implemented. The current DLC is cosmetic.

I've been playing since launch and I'm not tired of it. I only see opportunities with this game and encourage people who are on the fence to try and find a copy to at least try! It really is a lot of !@#$ing fun!

Some are just cosmetic skins and future use of Monsters, but if day one already has some DLC, I am sure you know what to expect. Watch a youtube video and within five minutes you will get the gist of the game. Use special abilities of each character to hunt down a large powerful monster and then run or separate when he charges you. Also..please take the time to look at the people who rate these games a 10. These people made an account today or a week ago and have rated this one game....coincidence? C'mon. I know Metacritic is full of trolls and idiots, but some honest personal reviews are on here too. Please, for the love of gaming and all that used to be good, avoid buying this game so 2K and the rest of the fat white bastards that run gaming companies start to understand that we are not all 12 years old, willing to pay 60 dollars for DLC every six months.

P.S. Please look at Pergatio and diablohitman and their recent reviews...please just do it.

So one thing I'm noticing people criticize about the game is that it has no flavor, no variation. I can say that the game itself has come a long way in assuaging player fears of being too complicated to pick up or too similar in so many areas. I just can't say as a gamer I agree with that. In a time where half-finished games like Destiny are hailed as huge successes, I feel like games like Evolve are just gonna get punched in the mouth by bitter cynics looking to drag down anything they can because it didn't have the ONE feature they pined for.

So far the biggest cons with the game are the convoluted DLC plan, and the AI seems a little on the novice difficulty for solo games. Otherwise Evolve is the FPS I've been waiting for all my life.

The idea is sound and could offer interesting ideas and future development. The biggest flaw I found was running around in circles with only a glimpse of the monster every few minutes until the monster was levelled and came back to annihilate my team. With so much going on around me with flashing screens messages aplenty and wildlife attacking every few steps it was extremely frustrating to play. I haven't been as disappointed with game like this since destiny. Little did I realise that I only received part of a game and would have to pay for the dlc on top to receive the full game. Something I can guarantee I will not be doing anytime soon. I will play the game some more and will return to update the review as appropriate. Expand

End of Story. I believe TR could've scored a major coup and sold Evolve for 14.99, and then sold a BUTT LOAD of a DLC. Instead of Free to play, try out Cheap to Play....I bet I'd have wound up spending $40 or more on Evolve had it started out cheap, and then just offered more stuff.

A final nail in the coffin about whether or not I'd make the plunge and purchase the game: I have well over 100 folks friend and followers, and I am not exaggerating when I say -- there isn't a single one who bought this game. For me to have FUN with a MP only game, I like to play with friends.

I played both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 and loved them. I was really looking forward to this game based on reviews i had read online from IGN and Gamespot and just cannot believe how misrepresented this game is on those reviews.

My first issue is that the controls feel clunky, especially as the monster, and the weapon selection controls don't work for me. The visuals are average but i experienced a lot of textures missing (they did eventually fill in) and shadow issues, and all the levels feel small and look the same.

Once i started playing i was bored within the hour, i like co-op online only games but this is just plain boring. If you're the hunters you spend ages just walking around trying to find the monster and when we did i just felt like i was button bashing and its very hard to make sense of whats going on and how much damage you are causing. There is a lack of story line and the characters are dull. At first the dialogue is amusing but it quickly gets repetitive.

I don't normally write reviews but i cannot believe how much of a disappointment this game is and just don't understand how reviewers can give it 8/10!?! Maybe i'm just crap at it, but in my view this is one of the worst games i have ever bought.

I would suggest to anyone considering adding Evolve to their collection to take a long hard look at the landscape of video gaming, and recognize that with it's corporate oriented, bottom-line disposition towards risky endeavors, that as the years go on, this game will be remembered for breaking away from the standard shooter/co-op/multiplayer paradigm prominent in less financially risky productions like C.O.D, Battlefield, etc.

Give the game a chance. Block out the white noise of jaded gamers who weren't around during gaming's golden age when Nintendo, and Sega were pricing games ranging from $50.00 to over $110.00, depending on the level of technology and expenditure involved in it's production. When companies are stuck in a market of arbitrary $60.00 charges for games, the one's that are spending more and taking more risks are going to need to recoup their costs or cut corners with game-play quality.

I think Evolve is fantastic, challenging, and a joyful way to engage other gamers in a way that other games rarely try.

And being repetitive is not a problem for me. What most of the whiners don't understand (because they are usually high school level intelligence) is that repetive play is the core formula and foundation of every single successful game. They capture an element that is fun, keep it progressive, with a rich story, make it increasingly challenging, and you have every single major hit released since gaming began...

I would have rated a 9 if you didn't have a season pass and dlc to purchase. That is just an excuse to take more of our money for less work and content. We are literally getting less for more. THAT IS BS.

PS my score may drop if I find out any of the purchased content give the man with the money an extra advantage. THAT IS BIGGER BS... Happy Wars I'm looking at you... That was a free game though. Free to play, pay to win. I like to develop skills not bills.

The reasons the game is getting a lot of negativity is because of two things :

A beta that people have based their opinion on, this is a mistake, the game needs a little bit of time to fully appreciate the different roles of classes and how they play. Much like Left 4 Dead, if the hunters try to Rambo their way through the game without teammates they will fail, you will also fail if playing as the monster and trying to take on the hunters early on without building his power up.

The second reason for the hate is because of the whole DLC argument, there are reviews in this very section claiming "oh it's pay to win" well let's get this straight IT'S NOT!
The DLC, and yes there is a lot of it, is purely cosmetic -all skins to make your monster or gun look different, it will not give anyone an advantage whatsoever.

So if you are happy with the core game and it's 3 monsters, 12 hunters and multiple maps (all new maps will be free according to the developer) then you don't have to buy anything else at all and will not be at any disadvantage.

Great game getting an unnecessary bashing from people not checking their facts.

    • It REQUIRES teamwork
    • Patience is a necessity
    • It will be frustrating
    • Monsters SEEM overpowered
    • It is a difficult game
That being said, in 70 matches as a hunter (I'm an absolutely terrible monster) I've won a little over 50% of those matches. Is this really that uncommon to find in a FPS? Does this really seem like the monsters are OP? And this is, by no means, a run-and-gun game. The teamwork and strategy alone are enough to push away those who play major FPSs, which I believe made up the majority of the buyers for Evolve.
This game has stunning visuals and, for being an online multiplayer, it render quite well. Also, I've played only a few games where I've had lagging issues or something went wrong with the graphics rendering. Now that's impressive for the amount that goes on in each match.
I can understand this just not being the type of game some people want to play, but rating it less than a 5 seems a little unmindful. Just on the impressiveness of visuals and nearly seamless online play alone warrant this game at least 5. And if you don't like it beyond that, then okay but at least you can agree it's impressive in those aspects. I don't at all believe this game is perfect (there are some characteristics that I don't agree with, like the Wraith's speed... I hate that damn Wraith) and it just barely came out so I expect a more fine tuned Evolve to get only better.
A personal take, the frustration from this game begins to make you loath the monsters and long to beat them. (It's about to get meta) Which is the same emotions the developers are trying to give the hunter characters. This, kind of, puts the gamers in the game and grants an unexpected connection between game characters and gamers.
Alright so, I really enjoy this game and believe it to be one of the better games to come out for the Xbox One, behind GTA V and Far Cry 4. It'll be interesting to see where this game is in a few months. I'd definitely recommend it.

In Evolve, one of the greatest unique strengths it plays to as a game, is the intentional imbalance between teams: Four Hunters versus one Monster. This sets the stage for perhaps one of the most dynamically thrilling and frustrating games you'll be able to play. Variables align in the mechanics of teamwork, monster player skill, stage mechanic variants (optional buffs or debuffs for either team that make their job easier or harder), native wildlife that can hinder progress for either side, and an array of possibilities with character selection for both Hunters and Monsters.

What some players may notice from the get-go, is that the game itself is not heavy on story or narrative. The premise is simple: 12 Hunters are enlisted to save colonists from a planet, Shear, from hyper-accelerated creatures they refer to as "Monsters." This is pretty much the breadth of the plot, as everything else is either shown in small cutscenes or spoken in dialogue between characters (which itself is random and unique depending on the characters used.) From this point on ward, as the match starts, it's incredibly imperative that two things are pointed out that can alter the gameplay drastically: Skill and Luck.

What I mean by this is, both Monsters and Hunters take practice to use. No one using any of the characters is going to pick up the controller and instantly know what to do. Much like a MMO RPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing game, akin to World of Warcraft or The Old Republic) you have skill sets that you must invest in and master to truly become attuned with your character. Just like in those games, you must also learn what works best when, and get down a certain pattern to your method in order to reap the madness (and fun) that Evolve can provide.

This being said, Evolve is a different beast, in which players of both team affinities will have to work to perfect their art, spotlighting that the match you play will only be as good as the dynamics between the two forces.

Truly, to understand Evolve, you must PLAY Evolve, as on the surface, it seems like a basic cage match of Four-versus-One, and that's it. But with each monster playing in drastically different ways, the Hunters able to switch up their tactics just by varying one character while keeping the rest static, or the level (and gametype) itself lending to a stroke of bad luck, or a chance for sheer brilliance.

With a total of four game types currently, this helps keep the game from getting too bogged down by the "Come and Get Me" vibe that some onlookers may feel it emanates. The modes feature as Defense mode, in which it operates like a MOBA (ala League of Legends or DotA) in which the hunters must defend a series of power relays and survive until the end of the match. Nest offers the Hunters to go on the hunt for not only the monster, but it's eggs. Eliminating the monster OR the eight eggs on the map will net the hunters a win, while the elimination of the hunters will give the victory to the monster. Rescue is the polar opposite, having the monster hunt down colonists that the hunters must locate and escort back to a safe zone. And finally is Hunt, the most highlighted of the game modes, a high-action version of "Hide and Seek." All of these game modes are wrapped up in small mini-campaigns called "Evacuation" which offer multiple variations and random instances where map variables and balancing come into play to offer a five-match series that will offer a more consistent connection between matches as opposed to a series of one-offs.

In the end, what Evolve means to you truly lies in your own tastes. Currently, as this review is written, the community is vastly split, between either condemning the game to the abyss of the worst games ever, or praising it for it's ingenuity and gravitas to do what most games won't. The execution of this game is sharp, the graphics grimey, and beautiful, each map feeling a bit different than the one before it but keeping a familiar feel, that reminds you that you truly are on a wild world.

Some games are gratifying straight out of the box, and in my opinion, this is the same for this game, but in a different light. While some games give you everything you need to know straight-forwardly, leaving little in the way of surprise further down the road, Evolve truly lives up to it's names, letting it linger in your mind for you to consider and alter your way of playing and yearning to know every combination available in order to maximize your effectiveness.

The game is bold, different, and dynamic, as well as intriguing. With a little bit of time and patience, as most multiplayer games, Evolve truly shines through once you give it time and you learn that the beast beneath the surface is far more engrossing and dangerous than you gave it credit for.

Only way I will play this in the future is if I get 4 friends to play with. Worlds are bland, there is nothing impressive about the graphics, Left 4 Dead at least gave exciting game play. Most of the time in this game you will be running, your fights with the monster are rare, and as I said if you don't like to aimlessly run towards signs of the monster then this won't be fun for you. The other option for them is to probably delay it another month. Most games have a day one patch, this isn't anything new. There is a story, it has a 5 day campaign with 800,000 possible outcomes of bonus effects and game modes so in that there are 800,000 campaigns. Each monster is completely different and unique, has strengths and weaknesses. Each hunter feels badass in it's own way.

All in all, all the haters out there complaining about DLC and "Pay to Win" have not even played the game and are full of crap. The hype train is real my friends and they are just jealous!

Ok, so the game is fun, aside from really requiring a group with headsets.

All the DLC, monsters, hunters, skins plus an actual campaign, would be about enough content for a 60 dollar game, but as it is, you pay 60 for the game, 15 for one of the next monsters, I'd assume 15 for the 5th monster, 6.99 for each set of monster skins, and like, what was it, 3.99 for the weapons skins

Listed like that, you're looking at nearly 200 bucks for all the content that would maybe be worth 40-50, total joke.

At least it's fun like I said, so if you already bought it like me, silver lining?

Now that that's out of the way, I've had about 30 hours with this game so far and I'm loving it. Definitely harkens back to Left 4 Dead except it's one long Tank fight with very interesting mechanics, maps and characters. Love the maps and graphics are amazing, especially the weather effects. The teamwork is also awesome to behold if you can get the right communicative team but even if not I can testify that the offline is really engaging too and the AI is actually quite clever.

Bottom line is if you want a fun, gorgeous and engaging asymetric shooter this is the best way to go this generation and I plan on playing it for a long while. Normally I would give this 8.5-9.0 just because I feel it could use some more game modes (hopefully that will come in the near future) but I have to combat all this hate. I can understand people giving it a 7 but any lower and I just can't fathom the reason other then they didn't play it (and giving it 0 is just ludicrous).

Honestly, this is one of the few times you should go out of your way and boycott this game because it's not just about DRM and privacy (which is still very important), this is about games and their ridiculous DLC costing WAY TOO MUCH going forward (from a selfish perspective, more expensive games means, well, less games I'll be able to play).

I really like the game but it has flaws. So it is true that this game is somewhat unique, but that doesn't make it immune to critique. My foremost problem is that if you don't have a team of four (or three) friends constantly online and they have time as well as want to play with you, you will miss out a lot of this game. And that bothers me dearly, because that is what this game requires "Teamwork". I often get into matches where half or more of your team is AI-controlled and the other times i got into games where my team consisted of players not up to the task. And how could they. The monster choses last and therefore you can't adapt to it. The matchmaking doesn't allow you to change your class/ type after the monster, therefore you are stuck with your character which isn't potential against this type of monster. For example if you're up against wraith - which still feels little OP right now, even nerfed - you need definetly Hank for shielding as well as Abe for slowing it down. But if you chose neither one of them because you couldn't foresee the monsters choice then you are absolutely in a disadvantage. Maybe other players will say other characters are better but the idea was that you can't adapt/ change your player based on the monster and therefore this game loses a lot. It is not a balanced game therefore. Don't get me even started on the balance. Yes, you can win against the monster and a skilled team is lets say in the first stage a clear winner but if the monster hasn't been detected and has full shield in second stage then you most certainly have a problem considering not everybody knows what to do which is often the case when you play random. Besides, the monster has to much of area effects. It only has to aim in your direction and most certainly will hit you even if not focused on you.

    Some things I recall:
There are the very long loading and matchmaking times. Usually it takes about 5 min plus to get into a game (the game itself not the lobby) and even more so to get into a decent one (reasons follow). Even if you have a group and or play only with friends customs it takes about 3 min to start a game. Sometimes joining doesn't work for friends you have to hard reset the game (like mcc) and even then it is bugged. You often join games which were started long before you joined (you take over AI), there is no choice you get forced to play the default character otherwise you get a 1 min ban. Everytime you quit a game even during the intro cutscene you get a 1 min ban. I get that they want to punish quitters but if you are in a game alone with three AI hunters and one player monster be sure to get your ass kicked because this AI is downright horrible. They have no initiative, but follow you everywhere you go. In a game that is focused on finding the monster fast, this is just boring. So you quit and get a ban (even not that long, but still unreasonable). Even though you can chose a preferable role you most certainly don't end up in it. I would assume in half of the games I played I wasn't what I preferred, and this is normal because others might prefer your character to so its roll the dice. But what is horrible is that I always put the monster last but ended up playing it more than I like in the end. This game forces so many things unto you. You can't change in the options that you won't join ingame matches but only those in search right now - so you could chose your class (which you could in Left for dead). I couldn't set up a private match with my friends because they where multiple times forced out of the lobby or the game crashed and I was left alone. Then they couldn't miraculously join my custom match. I mean this is not how its supposed to be. For a game that is focused purely on multiplayer - I don't recommend this game for any solo players only because the AI is worthless - this part should work. And it should at release not with further patches. For a game in development four years this is pathetic. The wildlife is too aggressive, i mean if you as much as come close as ten meters you get attacked even though you didn't behave aggressive but couldn't see it before. The traps for the hunters (megamouth, plants) are not easily spotted and above all, the creatures damage you too much. Almost as if the whole planet wants to kill you. This is the idea of the game but i come on if I but dare to look at a sloth it downright charges at me? I also noticed some graphic bugs where the shadows stick on your monitor for the whole game.
I could go on with this list really but running short of letters. Lastly I have to agree with a lot of people saying that four hunters and three monsters aren't enough. I unlocked all hunters in about each 5 playthroughs and the only thing changing is the level perks. Rent this game with some friends. Have about 1-2 weeks of fun but if you have seen all twelve maps - which look a (very) lot alike - and easily unlocked the characters, give it back.
    It was a great idea:(

It's certainly not the pinnacle of gaming, however this asymmetrical FPS shooter provides bucket loads of fun. The 'fun' element however, is scalable, depending on how many friends are playing with you and whether or not you have your microphone on or not. The gameplay is solid and there are distinct classes that cater for different approaches to hunting the monster depending on the player's strength and preferences. There is genuinely a sense of accomplishment when you are able to unlock new characters and although you'd think that unlocking the 2nd Medic character, it would just be a new skin and voiceover - think again, as every character regardless of class has different weapons and skills - providing a fresh new perspective when traipsing around large maps looking for your neighbourhood behemoth. Not interested in squad based FPS? Fine. Play as the monster. Completely different skillset and strategy from the Hunters. I initially (having gone through the tutorial) found the monster too complicated to play as and decidely stayed clear - until one evening I was accidentally placed in a match as the monster. The anxiety of being chased, the vulnerability whilst feeding/evolving, the abject glee of catching a hunter who has strayed from his friends - the game takes on a whole new lease of life completely separate from being a hunter. As I said, this game is great fun but not for everyone. Is it perfect? Not really - there are a few minor bugs that don't occur often but the greatest negative aspect to this game is the current issues facing matchmaking. If you're in a party with friends and you're looking for 1-3 players more, you often wait a very long time and sometimes get ejected from the process altogether. Hopefully Turtlerock Studios are aware of this issue and working on a fix. This game is a solid 8. Expand

I've only played this game offline due to my bad internet, so keep this in mind. Every mode that can be played online can be played offline with bots, which I just love. I would love it if more games had bots. So this is a rare treat for me.

Teams consist of 4 hunters and 1 monster. You can play as whichever side you want and no matter who you use, no one feels too strong or too weak. This game does very well with balancing things out. Both sides are a blast to play as in my opinion.

Modes are few in number. There is only 5 game modes to choose from. Hunt, Rescue, Nest, Defend and then there is Evacuation mode, which uses all four of those. So things can get repetitive after a short while. But if you enjoy playing these modes, then that shouldn't be a problem.

The AI is pretty smart. If they are the hunters, they will use their class skill at appropriate times and the medic will keep you healed up (or the enemy if you are the monster). They stick together like a team and coordinate well. But it never feels like they are cheating or have an unfair advantage due to being bots. They do make mistakes at times and wander into traps or mistakenly use a skill on the Wraith's decoy. When the AI is the monster, it provides a decent challenge most of the time. It will attack those that seem to be more of a threat or run if it feels it's in danger. There have been a few times where the hunter AI would just flat out die from the wildlife before I even got them when playing as the monster. So they aren't perfect, but they are usually pretty smart.

Controls are a bit different, it took me a few matches to get the hang of, but once you do it is pretty smooth and works very well. Playing as the monster doesn't feel wonky or weird, just different is all. But different in a good way. It's easy to jump around, climb walls and unleash attacks on the hunters.

Graphics are quite impressive and always pleasant to look at. However some of the maps feel a bit small and make it a bit harder to hide as the monster.

Overall the game is really fun for those that enjoy the action of multiplayer type games. If you don't have good internet, don't worry about it. The game has bots for every game mode so you can still enjoy it. Modes will get repetitive after a short while. Graphics are nice and so is gameplay. Controls are a bit odd at first, but there are tutorials to get you going. Definitely worth picking up.

I rented this game since this is a "Multiplayer only" game. Which is partially correct, unlike titanfall you can actually play offline instead of being forced to play online. I heard the game was great, but I have this thing about playing around people, just because people want to play with their friends doesn't mean we WANT to play online.

I heard the game was great, but I have this thing about playing around people, just because people want to play with their friends doesn't mean we WANT to play online.

But anyways, let's get to the game. First of all, the matchmaking in here is pretty decent, you get hooked up with some high level people and some around your level when you first start playing. The graphics are obviously good, but I'm not gonna praise it because it has good graphics, you can't judge a game by it's graphics anymore. *cough cough* Ryse son of Rome *cough cough* But the game play and the idea of the game is GREAT, the game play is smooth, and the controls are good, besides the climb for the monster, that needs to be replaced with something else.

If you loved titanfall you will love this game, it is perfect for you. But as in Titan fall this has the same problem. I don't want to play the same thing OVER and OVER and OVER. I mean you are just upgrading your character to play the same mission again and again. For 2, I feel like the maps are WAY to small, I thought the maps would actually be pretty big, but to be honest, it's just a little area and nothing more. All you have to do with the monster to evolve is just run around the map, and keep your distance from the hunters. That is also another thing, the bot hunters-even when it favors the monster- find you WAY to fast. I barely killed 2 animals before they found me.

Would I recommend this? No, the lack of story and MAKING you play online is just repetitive and just annoying. I guess if you liked Titan fall you will like this one. I can understand the fun to be had here, but for the price it is-which I didn't buy I rented- is to over priced. What I would recommend is pre-order Halo 5, because they have delayed that game 3 times to make the game better, you see 343 is making it so that people will like Halo 5. Pre-order that, I could only recommend this game if it was 20 bucks.

Evolve is not a bad game. But it was a major letdown.
Before any fanboys try to tell me that I hate this game solely because of the DLC and Microtransactions, let me talk about the "positives" of Evolve. Not only does Evolve have a great concept at its base, the gameplay is very fun and is one of those games that encourages co-operation with teammates rather than everyone being Rambos.

Not only does Evolve have a great concept at its base, the gameplay is very fun and is one of those games that encourages co-operation with teammates rather than everyone being Rambos. Unless of course your playing as the Monster. All the Classes are very well balanced and offer something for all types of playstyles. Want to be the Heavyhitter? Go for the Assualt. Want to support your team? Be the support or medic. Choose the way you want to play. And it also looks and sounds great. There is also a great deal of balance in the game, I've noticed that there is usually a fair chance for both the humans and monsters. Great gameplay is something important in a game, but there are many things holding back evolve from "evolving" to greater heights.
Evolve is a game that requires teamwork with all teammates, so having just one bad teammate or lack of communication amongst players can end up in this game becoming over really quickly or a running simulator. Especially if the tracker sucks. I can't really pass this off as a major complaint since this is something lots of multiplayer games have, but it is very noticeable here. Evolves different modes and attempt at a campaign were nice but they really don't offer much. It's slight variations on the concept but I wasn't really a fan of many of these modes and they felt too similar. Also the campaign blows. I wouldn't even call it a campaign but it almost qualifies. But I wasn't even expecting this game to have a campaign so it's not even that big of a concern to me. Also load times suck.
BUT, Evolve's BIGGEST PROBLEM is its lack of Content. After playing 2-3 hours of this game I was able to see all this game has to offer which is a major bummer. The gameplay kept me going and I had a lot of fun playing with my friends, but after a while, I ended up getting bored of doing the same gameplay over and over after about 7 hours of playing. There isn't enough variation in this game. This a major problem because this game costs 60$ and something of this much quality and content imo Doesn't even come close to earning that much money. This could have been remedied a lot if the developers didn't take out this games content and put it in the form of some of the most Extensive and obnoxious DLC. And Evolve doesn't earn it so I didn't buy it. Yes, no one is forcing you to buy it, but imagine how much better the game would be with all that extra content. It would help to fix one of evolve's biggest problems. If this was a free to play with triple the amount of DLC and skins that were in this game, or had all the DLC in it beforehand and then added more down the line to support the game, this game would have been great, especially since the gameplay and concept behind this game is incredible. At full Retail price with it's lack of content put into the form of DLC, it just ended up backfiring.
If I'm going to recommend this game to anyone I would say wait until the price drops to about 20$-25$. Getting it right now at full retail price just is not the right choice for your average day consumer. Your far better off spending that 60$ to get some better pre-owned games. Now let the fanboys rage at me for not loving this game as much as they did and the people who are shredding this game apart for it's extensive DLC (Oh believe me that is worthy of a whole different argument), but Evolve is not a bad game, it just not that Great either. It's a good game, delivering truly intense action. However, it loses a couple points for it's dreadfully slow process for joining a match - it takes forever and tends to dull some of the excitement one can feel.

I've played some $10 indie games with the same amount of content. (which are sometimes more fun too) Not to mention even though the different game modes have different objectives, the gameplay still feels the same. Evolve is more like just the multiplayer piece of Left 4 Dead, and with less gamemodes. One upside of this game is the ability to play offline with AIs instead of actual players. (which is something Titanfall lacked) However, there is no single player story mode. The only story we get is one cut-scene when first starting the game. I give this game a 4/10 because there are other elements of the game needed to make it a full $60. Evolve needs a story mode/campaign, and some sort of survival mode type gamemode to make it a full game. The game also needs more modes to go along with it's multiplayer. My advice to anyone considering buying this game: borrow from a friend, rent it, or simply forget about it. I was only able to play Evolve for a week and a half before I lost interest. Save your money for a game that will actually make you say "This game is completely worth $60, not $15 like Evolve. Expand

The game runs at 30 fps with dips. Because of the nature of the game, this is unacceptable. Which is a shame because the concept is great, as are the many loadouts and possible tactics you can experiment with. Who knows, maybe they'll release a "definitive edition" in 1-2 years with the required 60 fps performance it deserves. For now, buy this on PC or leave it be.

    Cons:
    - Lack of content (limited to DLC) for example skin packs, season pass, with an exclusive content for a early buyer.
    - No meaningful story around main events (just randomly generated evacuation "story" and very lame ending) characters dialogue gets repetitive over time.
    - Character leveling does not satisfy enough, and only goal is just to reach the elite level, which unlocks elite skins for the characters (other skins only available with real money)

Evolve is a enjoyable game, but it gives the constant feeling that it could've been better without the microtransaction (I can't blame on turtle rock studios, 2K had control on them and decided how content was splitted) Evolve had potential to be the next ground breaking competitive FPS shooter.
The game broke apart when it got too repetitive and doesn't had any interesting story around the maps, characters or even monsters. e.g. From where monsters came from, characters talked about "secret agencies", abandoned planets that got dark and nobody didn't came back alive to tell what happened.
Evolve is a great fun for awhile, and I hoped I could understand more about the story and the world, but huge gaps around maps, characters etc.) ruins the experience a bit while you play.
You can only speculate what happened and create lores around maps and hunters.

This is my 2nd review, DO NOT take this too seriously. :)

The monster is a lot of fun to play as because it adds a lot more tension and gives you moments where you clench your butt cheeks. overall like i said at the beginning some will hate it and some will love it > (like me). There is so much here I wanted to love, and there really are some thrilling moments, but the moments are far too rare for the time it takes to get into a group, and then into a game. Additionally, getting to the better, or just different, characters and weapons is way too hard. It really requires so much time in the game that it's too tedious. At least for me.

What could have been an underground smash as a budget download has been spread thin to justify a AAA price, leading to grave concerns about its glacial progression, value, longevity and DLC strategy. Though still utterly fantastic under optimal conditions, Evolve asks far too much for an inconsistently enjoyable experience.
