Wow, talk about a surprise. This gem popped onto the Xbox store out of nowhere and was able to hook me in immediately. This gem popped onto the Xbox store out of nowhere and was able to hook me in immediately. I'm a big fan of rouge-like games, as well as the space shooters, so this was right in my wheelhouse. I sank quite a bit of time in the game Elite: Dangerous and have been waiting for another chance to get back into a cockpit and blast other ships into stardust. Little did I know that my first few runs of this game were spent dying almost immediately.

As like other games in the rogue-like genre (or in this case, rogue-lite), progression is based on the players ability to collect the necessary supplies credits to upgrade their ship in between runs. These vary from energy upgrades that are needed to power the ships weapons, defenses, and boosters, to making it easier to find rare loot or credits in future runs. This hub is also where you can customize the ship's color, and loadouts. Credits are not the only source for ship upgrades either; many of the most essential upgrades are procedurally generated in the world and will have to be equipped on the spot or salvaged in order to be utilized during the run. These will be lost once the run is over. Blue prints may also be obtained for crafting items that will be fitted to the ship in between runs. All of these upgrades will be needed in order to last long in one of the many firefights that will be encountered while jumping from sector to sector.

Gameplay in Everspace is really divided into 2 main parts: exploring each sector for valuable resources that are used for crafting/trading/repairing, and dog fighting. Many times when jumping to a new area, the player will be thrust into a fire fight with opposing factions, each time with more skilled pilots with increased fire power. Be prepared to be slaughtered early on in your career by small groups of ships, as it's easy for even low level drones to annihilate your health bar and shields with just a few bursts of laser and gattling gun fire. After a while you will be able to hold your own, and will be more capable of surviving more battles. Ship maintenance will be necessary during runs in order to keep moving forward. The ship will be subject to standard hull damage, as well as damage to specific parts of the ship that will stay crippled until repaired with collected items. This leads to tense moments when your life support system is slowly draining all while you desperately search the current system for necessary items to fix it. At the time of writing this, I've only made it to the 4th sector out of 7, so I can't say too much about the later half of the game. I imagine that it will take me several more runs to make it all the way to the end.

Everspace fits a certain niche of game that is highly addictive and rewarding once the learning obstacle has been passed. This game really is something special, and I'm really surprised that I hadn't heard of it before yesterday. The game is beautiful and the environments become more and more inhabited as you progress with factions blowing each other up in the distance that can either be joined, or looted once the battle is over. There is a story here that gradually unwinds as later sectors are reached, but it isn't particularly interesting and really just gives a loose premise on how the playable character can get blown into oblivion and still keep coming back. This is the Xbox One version of the game, and I haven't ran into any glitches, but I've had several crashes. This being a PC port, I imagine this will be patched soon, and I also imagine that this game will do very well on the Xbox marketplace. Plus, it's discounted price tag will bring in a lot of potential buyers. If you're looking for that next space shooter, or that next addictive rouge-like that will get its hooks into you, this is definitely worth a look.

Amazing space shooter rogue like experience!

I’ve played over 80 hours (around 50-60 hours before the DLC came out) and enjoyed the game to its fullest with all perks unlocked. The fast paced combat is satisfying but required some good 4-8 hours to get used to controls and inertia of the ships. Different types of ships give a totally unique gameplay style: from a close combat slow gunship with drones, to an agile long-range scout, to anything in between. The story unfolds very slowly, it took me a while realize what was going on, and closer to the end the process becomes a bit tedious and repetitive but all the ship options and especially the side quests from encounters kept me engaged for long.

I absolutely adore this game and ES2, although they are very different genres. Loads of content, fun gameplay loop and absolutely gorgeous., even in 2022. Word of advice, go to options and change to controller style C. The default controls are a total mess, but C feels very natural and should have been the default.

    Overall, it's a fantastic roguelite.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game felt like a modern re-imagining/spiritual successor of Star Fox for the Super Nintendo. From the Galaxy map, down to the funny characters with who's faces pop up in little boxes during dialogue. I almost never 100% a game and this one I have been diligently working to do so due to the amount of fun. I recommend this game, however I would say the expansion should have been included as a update and should be bought from the beginning before you even start playing. Expand

Another element to the game I found trying were the unique, almost Descent-like controls because it took some getting used to. My mind had trouble getting around using the left bumper and trigger for throttle. Strafing is performed with the left analog stick as is vertical boosting--functions I typically expect to find on the right stick. It took a lot of patience and practice before I got used to the controls, though I never really felt comfortable with it. As this is a personal gripe, your mileage may vary. In the end, these concerns failed to disrupt what amounts to be a nice, stellar spin on the roguelike genre. Everspace has the same one more run motivation that spurs players to reach the end goal and at the same time, offering a fresh experience with every run.

If you like roguelike games and arcade spaceships you are in luck. Everspace comes to meet the needs of the genre. It has great virtues that will give us many hours of fun at the controls of our spaceship as we go forward. Even so, it has failures that do not improve the final result.

A visually stunning space sim, with an arcade gameplay coupled to roguelike mechanics. Its controls can feel quite uncomfortable in the beginning and it could have used some more variety in enemy encounters and tactics, but it's ultimately fun and recommended to lovers of space fighting/exploration.
