While there is a lot that has gone awry with Eternity: The Last Unicorn on Xbox One, there is still some enjoyment to be had. The game is by no means terrible and the main meat – that being the combat – is more than serviceable, and although it is dragged down by some serious issues with backtracking, the world itself can look nice. Overall though this feels like a frozen relic of the Xbox 360 era.

The developer should be absolutely ashamed for releasing the game in this state. There’s several faults in Eternity: The Last Unicorn that couldn’t possibly have gone unnoticed during QA. It’s buggy, it’s ugly, it’s boring, and even with its countless issues to the side, it’s got almost no likability. If you’re an absolute sucker for nostalgic RPGs, pick up any recent legacy Final Fantasy title. They’re decades old, and a hell of a lot better than this waste.

The flaws outweigh all positives. I enjoyed the world and the idea behind the story, but it’s nearly unplayable. I just don’t think it was ready to launch when it did, needing vast improvements in the most important areas. There were several occasions I force quit the game to take a break from the mess. I couldn’t even start to name every annoyance I had while playing. Even the starting screen makes no sense. You’re always on “New Game” and must scroll down to “load game”. Why would I want to start new? It should not be my first option. I’m really disappointed. I think there was a total miss on what could have been an exceptional adventure.

The scenarios and the level design are really cool. The story is interesting. Yes, the camera angle is fixed and it would be better if it were free, but I still don't see that as a problem. And the game has a certain degree of challenge as dark souls- It's not just crushing buttons. Expand

As a pureblood elf, Aurehen, your quest is to find and free the last unicorn to preserve Elven mortality, by taking you through various locales with an taste of Eternal Darkness in the play and feel of the game. Play as two different characters an elf and warrior and traverse the dangers that await. Eternity: The Last Unicorn will take you on a grand adventure. Norse mythology is the lifeblood of Eternity: The Last Unicorn’s story. Plenty of story surrounding various Gods and legends to go along the way, Eternity is a full fledged, immersive fantasy, that aims to really pull you into it’s fun and danger filled world. A massive plus in the soundtrack, really taking you to that far away land, and bringing you back in for confrontation when you come across it the musical score really gave me an inviting feeling throughout my adventure. Fixed camera positions, reminiscent of classic survival horror games of years past, draw you to focus on your environment, gently nudging you to take a closer look and interact with the things you see. This can be a bit of a hassle at times especially if you are a newer gamer not appreciative of the approach taken with this title. Sometimes paths that are hidden by the camera or an about face in the middle of the retro set-up, but I have to admit, in Eternity: The Last Unicorn, this type of camera grows on you quite quickly with the controls of the character’s movement being done very fluidly. In other words, I really felt at home and was able to have fun with the game despite the control issues present with risk taking retro/classic survival horror set-up. The combat has all the elements that it’s meant to: you have a camera/aim lock on to encounter your enemies or gates, which allows you to cycle through and prioritize your battle with a basic hack and slash attack that seems to be very capable and a finishing move to execute if you choose to use during the battles. I found myself skipping the finishers in the midst of larger battles and utilizing your magical power move at every opportunity as during your leveling up within the game, it became easier to destroy the enemies that cross your path. The animations that are coupled with these actions are quite basic, even though they do translate well on screen and feel immersive for the formula that's intentionally been utilized in game. Enemy spawning points can be a bit challenging paired with the fixed camera angle, you can find yourself in situations where you’re thrown a cheap shot every now and again but again this is nothing new to a formula that was used for classic survival horror genre for many years. Enemies are nicely designed and are on the whole, very uniquely and interesting to battle with enough variety to maintain a freshness among the play style used. Fantasy creatures made out of twisted shapes of reality, you’ll find interesting marriages of things you recognize put together to make sort of a theme to the enemies and how to approach them in battle. They come with a fair amount of attacks styles that really drive home how threatening one should battle them and know this, the fire trolls with be your arch nemesis when battling other enemies if not handled in the proper way enemies that are easily deferrable can take you down without proper execution on and battle. There’s control issues that need addressed in Eternity: The Last Unicorn to really polish itself. Interacting with certain objects like chests and pots can be tightened up a bit as you may find yourself struggling to find the sweet spot to even interact with objects at times or to even battle a boss because you are unable to shoot your bow because the jump command is awaiting your response but you just wanted to dodge or shoot and not jump. Despite these issues Eternity: The Last Unicorn is an extremely enjoyable game to play on the whole, it really has an addicting qualities to it that I didn't want to put down. It's a value priced title I found worth throwing myself into for hours on end, and it was unusual that a game so quirky captured my attention so well. I fully recommend giving Eternity a fair shake as there's a lot of fun to be had here despite the little problems I encountered in my countless hours enjoying this fantasy action adventure. If you remember Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube or the lovely classic Resident evil games, you will easily look past the faults here to find an adventure worth the times the controls feel broken because you just want to see what awaits you next on your journey between 2 characters that never really work in the same vein, they just tie together like the many characters in Eternal Darkness did. I chose my rating due to fun factor, immersion, and retro feel it offered me. Sure there's a ton of little problems but more adventure and fun that you easily look past these problems for the journey awaiting! Expand
