    Element Space is a very difficult game with good intentions but poor delivery. So much time was spent crafting out a storyline, using voice acting and putting some innovations into this genre that the main functionality of the game slips down. With clunky controls, high difficulty and such slow pacing, only experts at the turn-based strategy will make it through to enjoy the storyline. But they would need to be a glutton for punishment and have a lot of time on their hands.

    Element Space on Xbox One is a game that apes two of the giants of sci-fi gaming – X-COM and Mass Effect – and instead of using this as inspiration and building on them, instead tries to ride two horses and ultimately ends up falling down the gap in the middle.

This turn based stratagy rpg game is the latest game in this genre that shoots for the stars but ultimately falls short under their own weight. Element: Space offers up challenging turn based gameplay that will force you to use your wits and every bit of strategy you can muster. You play as Captain Pietham, shortly before his ship is to be retired from the fleet and to be used to house summit talks it is invaded by a mysterious advanced group who then frame Captain Pietham, as you go on the run to uncover the truth and clear your name all before the summit begins you will engage in combat in enemies, while this is fun for a while it does get repeatative rather quickly and any mistakes or bad moves are punished quite harshly, without a checkpoint prior to each fight you may need to reload and replay a battle or 2 to get back to where you was. Unfortunately, I felt the dialog between your allies didn't feel convincing and bland and while some character development was there it felt rushed and as such I never really felt that invested in my characters other than who is better in what situations. While this game does have tedious gameplay at times it does have several redeeming qualities that saves it from being a flop. The game does provide simple controls and a nice UI that doesn't take long to get the hang of and it does strike a balance nicely between fuctionality and depth that can often be a falling point for these games that either too simple or too complex. However general movement outside if combat can sometimes be a touch buggy and require a bit of spamming to move over a bridge etc.
    Visually Element: Space is where it does win you back, boasting detailed enviroments and nice cover damage animations, along with good character designs and great kill cam animations, I think plenty of effort and time was put into getting the visuals just right. Overall: It's no XCOM, however, Element: Space does provide a interesting story and will provide plenty of hours of gameplay for somebody who enjoys this style of game. I would suggest if new to the genre try elsewhere, should you be a vet of the genre pick it up to add to the collection, it does have some redeeming qualities that warrant adding it to the collection.    … Full Review »
