Forced to fight dangerous fantastical creatures, with very deliberate skill based sword combat system where you need to read enemy attacks and counter them accordingly. Driven Out may technically be a side-scrolling beat ‘em up but it’s definitely no button masher – the combat is entirely skill based, with no character progression and no loot. It takes place in a medieval fantasy world and follows a sword wielding heroine who must fight knights and fantastical creatures after she is forced from her home. The combat in Driven Out is a little reminiscent of the early 2D Prince of Persia games, with each encounter with an enemy being a high stakes duel that requires you to read the enemies movements and block/parry in the correct direction accordingly (high, medium and low), then attack while they’re open. You can only take three hits before you die, but you can place checkpoints that you will respawn at. The only problem is that the checkpoints are destructible – so if an enemy attacks it then you’ll lose it (and your progress if you die). The tactical skill based combat of Driven Out takes a little getting used to but once you get to grips with it it’s a very impressive game. Each encounter is a high stakes duel to the death where it only takes a few slip-ups to send you to your grave. The pixel art animation is gorgeous and each new enemy has a different set of attack animations that you have to learn so you can predict their and counter them. See if you’ve got what it takes and get your sword out in Driven Out.… Expand

    Driven Out on Xbox One presents an interesting swordplay fighting system within an open 2D adventure design. While it deserves some credit for producing a variety of locations and enemy types, the core character and combat system remains basic and unchanged throughout the adventure.

    The core gameplay of Driven Out proves solid and satisfying, and is enhanced by some super nostalgic retro sensibilities. Yet, the combat just seems a touch too slow on your part and imbalanced in favor of your AI opponents, which tends to make it tough to stick with the basic, somewhat repetitive gameplay in the long run.

    Driven Out is a very challenging game and offers good enemy variety and will test your reflexes. But with no backstory or any kind of storyline, it is hard to bond with your protagonist. There is some fun to be had in the sense of achievement by progressing in such a tough game, where it can take you an hour or more to progress past the same 3 or 4 enemies. But constantly dying against the same foe grows old very fast.
