DragoDino is a cute and colorful collect-a-thon adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The price-tag is well set and there’s no denying that you’re getting your money’s worth. Though issues with its punishing death penalty, lengthy loading screens and somewhat repetitive gameplay, will inevitably test your patience in the long run.

I want to like DragoDino more than I do, but the truth of the matter is that even though it’s a well thought out collect ‘em up with some clever ideas, the overall mechanics let it down. A platformer can only be as good as the physics that hold it together and this is a serious problem for DragoDino.

The presentation is cute and fun, and most of the gameplay is generally challenging without being too difficult. As a player, it is quite satisfying to puzzle your way through the roguelike levels defeating all of the foes, uncovering the secrets and grabbing all of the collectibles. Unfortunately, all of that hard work feels short-changed when the difficulty spikes so sharply at the end of a multistage level.

Don’t get me wrong you will have definitely played better games in the genre, but it’s very easy to look past this game’s shortcomings because it has quite a bit of charm and in some ways a bit of uniqueness about it as well. Obviously the most important aspect in a game like this is its platforming elements and thankfully they get them spot on. Everything remains fluid and responsive throughout and that kept the frustration levels down which is very important because the game can frustrate you from time to time. You will find the most frustrating moments to occur when you die and the main reason why you get frustrated is because when you die you lose all progress and items. They try to combat this frustration by including a two player local co-op option and I must admit that I didn’t get nowhere near as frustrated when playing in this mode. Another thing this mode does is give the game quite a bit of replayability, but I still recommend you to play the game in short bursts. The main reason why I say this is because there just isn’t enough variety in the gameplay to play it for long periods so if you keep the playing of the game to a short period then you won’t find it to become as tedious. Thankfully the game isn’t lacking in variety in all areas and I must admit that I was quite impressed with the level design in the game. There are a number of levels for you to tackle and each level feels as though it has a purpose and that’s mainly down to the amount of variety and creativity each level has been gifted. I think the levels would’ve been even better if there was more of a story before you start each level, but unfortunately the story is bare bones to say the least. One thing that makes me really enjoy a platformer is its presentation and thankfully they’ve done a good job here. Visually the game is packed full of colour and charm, and the accompanying sound design also has quite a lot of charm which in turn keeps things interesting and makes things become more enjoyable somewhat. At the end of the day DragoDino gets the most important aspects correct and without a doubt this will please fans of platformers. I would’ve have liked to have given the game a higher score but some of its problems do take away from your overall experience from time to time. That being said it gets more right than it gets wrong and as far as platformers go I think it’s a pretty decent addition to the genre. Expand
