It's a good game that builds on Doom 2016. Nice graphics and smooth gameplay. For me, it's too complicated, contains unnecessary systems, and the gameplay is all about cooldowns for armor, health, etc... Also, the jumping puzzles are bad and don't belong in a fast-paced shooter game like this.

My flaw with the game remains similar to the last, with the lack of variety (pew-pewing) but this time, the platforming is way better, with the ability to instantly try again, and climbing is way more intuitive, and actually, everything is just way more intuitive.

Exploration still feels like a little bit of a drag, as there aren't any puzzles or anything cool to explore in the first place, but I will say, the upgrade system is way better along with the tone of the game being better than the last.

Overall, the game is great, I highly recommend it and I'd rather play this game than the first one, any day of the week.

This is going to sound counter-intuitive, but there are too many weapons, power-ups, and special abilities in Doom Eternal. All the weapons, and weapon modes, and grenades, flame belcher, chainsaw, crucible sword, blood punch and when best to use them is annoyingly complex. I love the original Doom for the simplicity of blowing up things without thinking too hard about it.

There's a lot of cut-rate RPG lore added here that expands upon the history and various factions in the world of Doom, and it's very unwelcome. It's some cheesy paint-by-numbers world-building that reminds me of Diablo's story, and it's unnecessary and just drags the gameplay in Doom. Again, I don't need to know why I'm blowing up demons. Why are they making this needlessly complicated.

There's also some light puzzle-solving of the Uncharted/Tomb Raider variety added in that I have mixed feelings about. It seems out of place for the franchise.

This version of Doom is too much of a lot of things that make the game lose focus. Less would have been more.

I enjoyed this more than 2016, more bite sized levels. The online is pretty sad. Events and skins are a bit over the top for this type of game.

It took quite a while to get into this game, mostly because the easiest difficulty is still ridiculous. I really do wish that game developers would understand that some people don't like to get frustrated by dying over and over. In some circumstances it does provide “Sentinel Armor” if you die in specific places, but THAT should have been your easy mode.

You play as a mute (mostly) super duper soldier that steam rolls over anything in his path. For some reason he has to save earth (even though the place is trashed worse than New Orleans the day after Mardi Gras). There is a group of alien/robot priests trying to cramp his style so he's got to straighten them out first. More story than I expected, but it's still basically going from arena to arena surviving demon hordes.

I kept putting this game down in the early levels, only to pick it up again weeks later. Then I'd come across two Mancubus' and feel like I was shooting harsh words for all the damage I was doing. Eventually, you get a few better weapons (Super Shotgun is pretty neat.) At that point it finally becomes a bit more bearable. The infinite frag grenade and ice grenade deserve a mention, as the upgrades really made those helpful tools.

There are a few issues that I had with the guns that I realize are more mechanics than flaws. Like weapons sharing ammo. Usually one weapon outshines the other, which results in sticking to the three or four weapons that actually do any damage. Also, it really took away from the crazy super weapons toward the end of the game that they were such limited use with rare ammo. I wound up not using them at all because I was always saving them for what might be around the corner.

As far as graphics and sound the game deserves a lot of the praise it gets. The sound track was great and the look and sounds of all the guns makes them feel powerful (even when they are not). There were many times that I had to stop and appreciate the landscape or a giant demon walking through the background. Those parts were outstanding.

I get that the game is supposed to be like “combat chess” and that is a really neat idea- that every enemy has a weakness that can be exploited but the come at you so fast that you have to keep moving and think very quickly. It just seems like (on easy mode, at least) exploiting a weakness shouldn't still take an entire weapons ammo stock to kill the demon that can destroy you in three hits. There are a lot of enemy types that tip the scale from challenging to frustrating very quickly.

Lastly, the platforming. It's not that it doesn't belong in this type of game (it doesn't) but that it is clearly designed to be frustrating and slow you down in an otherwise very fast paced game. It really seems like a failed experiment and you will be cursing whoever thought of it.

Once you get the hang of the game it does make you feel very skilled and the levels do become pretty cool as they progress. It's a bit light on story, but the only thing really holding it back from being a great game was the frustrating difficulty.

This is maybe the best Doom have to offer, in scale and variation. I love that you can upgrade everything, and you have to fight like hell for it! And cool cosmetics for armor, weapons and demons. Fortress of Doom is excellent, and the action is awesome! But too many rooms of the same enemies, lack of enemy intros and timed missions are things that ruins some of the fun for me.

I loved the last Doom however I found this sequel frustrating. I only really have one gripe but it kinda ruined it for me. I never had enough ammo... ever. It seemed like most of the time I was running around looking for ammo rather than actually having fun with the game. It seems like such a small gripe, but it really impacted on my enjoyment of the game.

You can tell a lot of passion went into this and was created with gamers in mind rather than shareholders. The one negative I have about the game is a huge one & is so frustrating that I probably won't reinstall & had to forced myself to keep playing through 1/2 the game. On the bright side Best Buy was sold out of the Deluxe edition so I only threw away $60, not $90, & no season pass.. I saw gameplay before buying with Doom Guy falling, dashing in mid jump, to double jump on a dime then dash to climb up disappearing floating rock maze before the pieces sink into lava & remember how gravity works as soon as you touch them just like Lara frikin Croft. It made exploration look more frustrating than it's worth & iD said the games environment encourages exploration so i figured the NES Ninja Gaiden sequences probably arent required to progress the story. The few clips of rage inducing, platforming I saw prior to purchase seemed like filler activities for achievement hunters & completionists, Every hint of immersion was abruptly met with another abyss to traverse & then I realized finding extra lives was pointless when they're used up by taking more fall damage than from bosses in combat. Imagine Mario in the Brotherhood of Steel....Mario 64 with power armor from Fallout and the Witcher 2 map thats how it feels to navigate this thing. I only rated as high as I did because it is good at what it sets out to do.... So I hate platforming but that doesnt make it trash because its no longer the formula that I loved. However, I hope this review saves at least one person $60 just to learn that Mirrors Edge wouldnt have been any better if it had a bad ass soundtrack & glory kills.

Oh, and the multiplayer! I I cant suggest buying just for multiplayer mode, but it is the highlight of the game for me. Its original, and creative...not just more team deathmatch, capture flag generic modes. Level up demons, unlock skins & in game customizations without loot boxes....just by playing the game, That's crazy......next they'll me that you can still play Doom Eternal without signing into. bethesda.net account.

    Cons:

    - Way too much jumping & climbing, it slows the game far too much. Some of these sequences border on the ridiculous.
    - Bullet sponge enemies, The Marauder is a pain and feels completely overpowered compared to most other enemies.
    - Set-pieces, the game feels less like a DOOM game and more like Fallout. Action sequences are spread out way too much.
    - The plot, an attempt at a back story was made but it's not particularly interesting.
    - Length, About a dozen missions, length of these varies. A fast travel system and level select allow you to replay to get all the collectibles, no replayability other than higher difficulty settings.
    - Value for money, at £60 for the basic version this could have been half of that and still not got your money's worth.
    - You MUST have a Bethesda account to play.

    Pros:

+ Action sequences, when they do come around they're fast and frantic and force you to think about the best strategy for the situation.
+ Upgrades, there's a tonne of upgrades for weapons, the suit, and skills. They use different methods/items to do so.
+ Cheats, you can replay previously completed levels with cheats active, can help with quickly replaying levels to find missed collectibles/secrets. It's a novelty though, you will get bored with this too.
+ Soundtrack is incredible, the best part of the whole experience.

    Summary:

Not as bad as I had originally reviewed it but there's no getting over this is a major disappointment compared with its predecessor, fleeting moments of high octane-action don't make up for the time wasted climbing up walls or making insane jumps across chasms. One jump in particular almost broke the game for me.

Replaying previous levels with cheats active is fun but hollow and the novelty quickly wears off. The best way to describe this whole experience is DOOM-Lite, the developers tried to change what this is at its core and it didn't work and what we're left with is a shadow of what a DOOM game should be.

Hollow, shallow, dull but with fleeting moments of intense action, at an eye-watering £60 this one release you should wait for in the sales. Avoid till then.

Then there’s the changes in combat. Way too much focus on the weak point system. Again, maybe my fault, but I’m not that good of a shot. Chainsaw for ammo, flame thrower for armor. I had to laugh when I got to the first rune, encouraging players to figure out their play style when the game clearly wants you to play one specific way. I might come back to this game later, but I think I’ll have a better time hitting up the back catalog in the time being.

I'm the DOOM Slayer, not George of the f***ing Jungle.

Like DOOM 2016 you move through the levels and hit demon hot spots where you are locked in combat for some time until everything is dead. The combat is uber fast paced, almost too much so for controllers (use mouse and keyboard if you can). My problem with the game though is the low ammo count offered you start out with. I am constantly having to chainsaw small enemies to get ammo, so I'm never able to actually chainsaw the bigger demons.

Also the low amount of health and armor items available force you to constantly time shots to cause enemies to stagger for glory kills. I absolutely HATE when games do this, force you to play their way (the developer's way), not your way. I want to run around slaughtering and wrecking demons like every DOOM game to date was played, not be thinking about avoiding hurting them too much that they die without allowing me to get the glory kill to keep my health and armor up.

I blew through DOOM 2016 in a couple days. Couldn't stop playing it but this game is such a disappointment I'm only playing for maybe an hour at a time and I go to something else. I'll keep it out of the red with 5 cause the combat can be fun and the soundtrack is metal as ever but I won't be recommending this to fans of classic style DOOM (again, which DOOM 2016 did much better at).

Unfortunately this addition to the series introduces platforming, scaling of walls and portals which do nothing but slow down all the things that make the game enjoyable.
By the end of the game you are sick to death of stumbling across yet another jumpy puzzle that feels desperately out of place in this iconic all action series.

It agonises me to agree with the wife (when it comes to computer games - good save) but i just feel it could have been a bit darker too. Its more of a nit picky criticism but this sequel felt more cartoony than previous versions.

All in all a good game but you cant help but feel it could have been so much better without the unnecessary platforming just comes across as a bad call that the developers persisted with.

Dont believe the hype from some reviewers giving this a 10/10 and branding it the best shooter of our generation, along with many other nonsense statements. Its not.

Overall enjoyable with several questionable design decisions from the devs. If you played Doom 2016, you already know the strengths. A fast pace, unapologetically hyperviolent , power shooter. Since there's already a litany of praise, I want to take some time to focus on the flaws with this sequel.

    1) There's a very clear 'right way' to play this game. Unlike Doom 2016, the developers all but force you to play Doom Eternal their way to have fun. If you don't routinely and proactively use the Chainsaw to get ammo, you'll consistently run of ammo leading to frustration. If you don't use the flame belch feature for armor routinely, you'll die quickly to heavy and super heavy enemies. If you don't exploit and memorize enemy weak point with certain weapons, enemies feel very bullet spongy and your guns feel weak. After you've mastered the 'dev approved way' to play the game, it's really fun, but it is a frustrating, miserable chore up until that point. This makes me caution casual shooter fans against purchasing this title.

    2) There's a ton of tutorials. After watching several developer commentaries on Doom 2016, I thought the devs understood how important it was to maintain a consistent, engaging pace and gameplay not bogged down by tutorials especially in the beginning. Apparently, I was wrong. By default, Doom Eternal provides you with a tutorial with your first encounter with every new gun, enemy, and ability. This leads to a pace consistently brought to a halt by menus. Since the devs have created a 'right way' to play this game, you need these tutorials to enjoy the game, but it really harms the feeling and pace when a new super demon burst onto the scene for the first time, and you're greeted with a mandatory tutorial telling you exactly how to defeat said enemy. Can't help but think of how other titles like Dead Space use a weak point focused combat without relying on tutorials.

    3) The narrative is again hidden behind codex entries. If you're interested in who the heck are the Sentiels or King Novik or the downfall of earth or the Makyrs, it's all in the codex in the menus

    4) The multiplayer, Battlemode, is a disaster. With assymmetrical multiplayer shooters, the main challenge is balancing the different classes for the devs. In this respect, Doom Eternal's multiplayer may be one of the most poorly balanced assymetrical multiplayer games I've ever experienced...certainly from a AAA studio. There a 2 demons vs 1 slayer which already provides a numerical advantage. The demons can spawn other demons consistently furthering this advantage. The demons have no ammo limitations just timers for abilities. The demons often have mobility advantages/can fly. To win, the slayer must not only kill both demons, but also do so within 20 SECONDS of each other...or the 2nd player controlled demon respawns with half health. Due to these truly awful design decisions from the multiplayer lead devs, the difficulty between playing as a slayer and demon is not even close. The lead designer on the multiplayer is borderline incompetent. Do not waste any of your time on this mode.

A good game, a somewhat disappointing sequel. Mechanics and controls hold up very well, shooting is precise and fast paced and the action is on point. Seems like all the studios that made games when i was a kid, stopped giving a **** about their die hard fans. Expand

This is a platformer with FPS elements, not the other way around.

In DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. Here they have simplified it for some reason. Even after looking at the selection of a new weapon, before you took it by actually lifting it from the body or picking it up from the floor. This gave realism, immersion. And now some ridiculous weighing icons in the air. This kills the whole atmosphere of the dive. AndIn DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. DOOM 2016 was head and shoulders above DOOM ETERNAL. All the good stuff was just flushed down the toilet. Yes, it's good. Killing demons is fun and the new mechanics are good. But the presentation of the story and simplification kill the whole atmosphere. Expand

And because of this you will get trapped between a demon and a hard place or another demon and die helplessly for more than you would like. And if you think that was where the problems ended you are so very wrong. ALL DEMONS RUSH YOU AND WILL VERY RARELY MISS THEIR SHOTS, so you will never have full health and always be on the run, never having time to strategize or just waiting to die so you can try and make a perfect run in order to pass one part of a level. In fact because of this doing glory kills which made doom 2016 so great is as pointless and detrimental as they are in duke nukem because not only do you lose all the health you gained but you will die immediately after the fact because of the body blocking and high accuracy the demons have at their disposal now. The rocket launcher is back for some reason despite being the worst gun in DOOM 2016 aside from the pistol and does self-damage for some reason again, which screws you over a lot considering the body blocking demons. Also, there is a weak point system in the game that was executed terribly. You would think the developers of this game would take pointers from something like the dead space franchise since the developers for that title perfected limb cutting mechanics. BUT YOU WOULD BE WRONG, only the HEAVY CANNON WITH THE SCOPE ATTACHEMENT RELIABLY CRIPPLES DEMONS, unlike dead space where every gun offered a tactical advantage. Which btw if you do not cripple demons you will die easily and immediately because they will overwhelm you with their multiple guns CONSTANTLY firing on you with no reload animations to give you a breather, let alone their larger hitboxes from said multiple guns makes it easier for them to body block you. This new weak point system makes all other guns (aside from the heavy cannon) pointless and useless except for when you run out of ammo for your heavy cannon, forcing you to have to play a specific way despite the developers praising themselves for their "diversity of combat" in DOOM eternal. Also you have to move slow and stand still most of the time to pick enemies apart with the heavy cannon which will kill you super quick because as I mentioned before YOU HAVE TO KEEP MOVING CAUSE YOU HAVE NO HEALTH AND DEMONS CONSTATLY BODY BLOCK YOU IF YOU DO NOT. There are loads of puzzles which get frustrating and old super-fast because unlike Metroid the only way to backtrack in doom IS TO RESTART THE WHOLE MISSION. Which would not be so bad if it was only collectables you lose from these puzzles on no, these bright individuals decided in a doom game that what players really wanted was too play cranium puzzles in order to get essential upgrades you need for your weapons and armor so you do not die easily and more pathetically then you already do. Which would not be so bad if there was not a useless interactive environment system that did not add insult onto injury. It tries to encourage you to kill enemies with it, but it kills you more instead. This system lacks any proper mechanics like in the game Bullstorm unless you get upgrades later to make it mediocre at best. Oh, and best part is there is a “lives” system like for arcade games, I guess the developers somewhat realized how terrible their design choices for combat where, so they implemented a token system to balance it out (which btw is not a bad idea for ultra-nightmare or arcade mode even if combat mechanics where not terrible). So, if you were looking for immersion in this game you will not find it. I have not even finished the campaign yet because of how unfun and frustrating it is, I tried to play multiplayer but that was even more of a train wreck. “BATTLEMODE” as they call it is just team deathmatch despite the developers claiming it is not. Their adorable little twist is that it is a 1 vs 2 team deathmatch where a human character with unique powers fights two player-controlled monsters with unique powers who can summon minions and debuff you, this goes on for three or so rounds and you unlock new powers for each round after the first. This is clearly a totally original system and never has anything similar or exactly the same ever been done before in any other game such as: dying light, evolve, left 4 dead 1/2, aliens vs predator (the 2010 game), battle born, overwatch, every single moba every, and more. This multiplayer idea is not only completely unoriginal, but it is incredibly unbalanced to the point where the only people who will get enjoyment out of it are masochists playing as the human and sadists playing as the demons. Then again if this was no accident considering bdsm is viewed by certain people of faith to be evil/satanic than this is an incredible design that is very lore friendly. Expand

The game is gorgeous. The sound/music is fine enough. The gameplay is where things start to fall apart. The combat feels tedious. The platforming is passable most of the time, but there are some poorly telegraphed spots that were somewhat annoying. I will likely never play this game again, which is a shame because I have played through the 2016 Doom MANY times over the years. ThisThe game is gorgeous. The sound/music is fine enough. It may not reach the sublime heights of its predecessor, but Doom Eternal is bursting at the seams with hellacious action.

An absolutely spectacular game, and one of the early highlight games of 2020. Doom Eternal will make you think as you kill, pushing your mind to its limits. That’s not a bad thing. It’s the perfect trip to hell.

Doom Eternal is an outstanding entry in the series marredby a few setbacks. There is a ton of content including one of the best shooter campaigns I have played this generation. The push and pull method of the combat is addictive to master and a blast to play. Everything looks and sounds fantastic and this is a game that makes me smile as a fan since the beginning. While the generation may be coming to an end, Doom Eternal is one of the games that will send it off with a bang.
