Disappointed with this game after Doom (2016) - this game is notably worse in almost every way. Balance is way off, heavy focus on weak points destroys the flow, story is really awkward and uncompelling (not to mention incompatible with the first game), music is mediocre

You spend more time farming ammo than killing demons, and even that feels like a chore. Never expected a Doom game to be boring. I keep turning it off or just walking off without even pausing because the gameplay isnt engaging at all.

ETERNAL add everything you didn't want into the game: way too many upgrades (at least 5 different upgrade points), HORRIBLE amounts of frustrating platforming with Super Mario cheesy obstacles (you're an unstoppable force of DOOM but can you do gymnastics constantly?), completely dependent on glory kills/chainsaw to maintain health and ammo as pick ups are virtually nonexistent, bullet sponge enemies, virtually indestructible heavies that are 10x harder than some of the bosses, endlessly spawning fodder enemies, combat is almost exclusively kill rooms, at least 4 different charging items during combat, precision weak points on enemeis???, and way too much Doomguy backstory. All of that but not a single new weapon? Even Doomguy's outfit suddenly went Gears of War... Power Ups, like Berserk, that made 2016 so fun are very few and far between. Really took the franchise from "have fun slaughtering your way through a sea of enemies" to "uber complex combat management" IMO, that's not DOOM. DOOM Eternal went completely the opposite of what made DOOM 2016 so much fun. Biggest letdown game in a long time for me. Expand

Things that made 2016 Doom a masterpiece, have vanished. I get that lots of players like this game, and that's fine, everyone has their opinion, but as a huge 2016 fan, this sequel has left me heartbroken.

    1. Simplicity has gone. FPS games were pretty stale in 2016, Doom showed that a back-to-basics approach, with AAA graphics and artist-driven soundtrack and simple controls, could be a welcome refuge from all the "innovation" we see from other games. It was a pure experience. Eternal convolutes things and so ruined its USP.

    2. Not as dark as its predecessors. Although Doom 2016 was satirical and subtle in its storytelling, the environments were extra-gory and the soundtrack evocative, but Eternal fails to hit those notes. The environments are smaller, and that detracts from the maze-like intricacy of its predecessor. In Doom 2016, the environments convinced you that everything was quite normal a half-an-hour ago, only for Hell to have arrived and smear blood everywhere.

    3. Combat is fundamentally different, and not for the better. Doom 2016 is the superior game because the player is given freedom in combat and movement. While platforming is more noticeable in Eternal, it isn't why we want to play. Its a "shooter" not a runner and a climber. While these elements are not inherently bad, they are not there to enhance the player, but rather to help the player escape. Doom 2016 was no reloading and no cover. Eternal effectively has both. Chainsaw mechanic is reloading, effectively, and the platforming is "cover". This is a fundamental change, and defys any game with a Doom label on it, by definition.

    4. The interruptions!!! Towards the end of a battle, the game opens a door somewhere, and switches from the FPS perspective to the door opening. Utterly pointless. The levels are linear anyway, there's often only one way in and one way out, so why tell us that the door has opened. For that matter, why tell us that we should explore for secrets when every secret is clearly marked on the map? The mystery is gone, the exploration non-existent, and the levels...compared to 2016...are poor.

    5. The Lore. The lore was a wonderful way to flesh out the Doom Universe, I think it's a great idea, but in Eternal the execution is poor. The font is wrong, the layout messy, the colours are all garish. It ruins the "dark" vibe from the previous game, and seems geared towards people who are into psychedelics rather than some well-executed hellscape. Rainbow coloured ammo? Just stupid.

The game suffers immensely because its predecessor was and remains singularly exceptional. It's not easy to top a game like that, and in truth, it rarely happens, but one thought it could with Doom because the formula was so simple and so good, and because the devs, like Hugo Martin, gave in-depth interviews about what they thought a Doom game should be. What happened?!

The low rating is an emotional reaction, I'm heartbroken that one of the best games in a decade or so has been trashed the way it has. Is it better than a CoD game? Of course! But it's not better than Doom 2016.

It's way overhyped. The developers lost touch with the Doom experience. The weapon mechanics are overcomplicated. Constantly farming resources is repetitive and boring. This game is not fun. I love challenging games, I really liked Doom 2016, but this is just a bunch of cheap deaths. This game is just frustrating. Even turned the difficulty all the way down, which I never do and this game still sucks. Not fun. Not good, hard pass. Very disappointed.

So disappointed with this game. I was expecting something that built upon the feel and atmosphere of the Doom 2016 release. This lacks atmosphere and doesn’t feel like Doom. The sound and music are excellent and the only thing compatible to the 2016 game. This feels like a step backwards. An unintuitive and frustrating experience; not hard, just frustrating.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has a very broken story, a total mess. They try and force bits of the story on you with the hope that you will follow up with the lore you collect throughout the game. Some demons, specifically the marauder, are completely unlike any other demon in the doom franchise and flat out makes no sense other than to make the game Nintendo hard.. make the game harder so it lasts longer. Speaking of Nintendo, there is a large amount of Mario-like platforming in this game that just seem ridiculous. This game isn’t bad, but it’s just not good. As a avid doom fan, this is the first doom game that I have played and regretted. Expand

    - Always low on ammo in order to enforce the first point. - Infinite spawn of enemies in order to address the second point.

Essentially a mess of a game trying to create a “thinking man’s action game” (said by the lead dev) out of what should be adrenaline focused, fast pace action. Ultimately what comes down to is that it doesn’t accomplish its own objective either because you will be just memorizing weaknesses and prioritize the high targets while keeping few fodders around for ammo instead of killing them indiscriminately like a Doom Slayer should be. They created a terrible mechanic for a game that didn’t need it. And to create the said delusion, they limit your ammo and your freedom to play. And to solve the low ammo issue, they introduced another dumb mechanic of infinitely respawning enemies. This approach is akin to say, The Elder Scrolls Six game hypothetically forcing players to do the main quest line first in order to promote “story driven game” by devs—destroying what made the previous series great. 0/10 to balance the fanboys.

I actually hate this game unfortunately! I loved 2016 and Doom 3. Even on the lowest difficulty I find it super frustrating! Please put in a Doom 2016 mode or an even lower difficulty with increased ammo. I will re-review if changes made. DOOM Eternal took most of that and changed things just enough where it's recognisable but just off.
Because of the changes to the way ammo and armour work the game now has to spawn trash mobs in every fight for you to get ammo and armour out of which just annoy and get in the way. This is compounded by the fact you are constantly running out of ammo and having to find a track mob to get some ammo out of. This change is a joke and makes some weapons useless, the chaingun can fire for maybe 3 seconds before it runs out of ammo. Why they made this change is beggars belief.

As soon as I started the game and saw it had a life system was a major red flag to me as they are an archaic mechanic that just screams "we couldn't balance the game" and boy my fears did not go far enough. Nearly Every single thing that they added in this over 2016 is worse, apart from the dash. The underground tentacles are just annoying and not fun to fight same goes for the Marauder and the handfull of other new enemies. Playing through this I was shocked at how much they had ruined from the previous game for no reason other than to be new, this game feels like the B team had to prove they were just as good. Not even mentioning Battle Mode because it's more of a joke than the multiplayer from the last game.

Doom Eternal is an outstanding entry in the series marredby a few setbacks. There is a ton of content including one of the best shooter campaigns I have played this generation. The push and pull method of the combat is addictive to master and a blast to play. Everything looks and sounds fantastic and this is a game that makes me smile as a fan since the beginning. While the generation may be coming to an end, Doom Eternal is one of the games that will send it off with a bang.
