Destiny is a first-person shooter in the style of Halo. Game play takes place online, so an XBox Live account is required. It has a lot of MMORPG elements to it, such as picking up PvE quests, leveling up your character, upgrading your gear, and joining PvP arenas.

The good -- The graphics and the interface are gorgeous. And the combat mechanics are top-notch; it's clear that Bungie brings a world of experience to the table, gleaned from their work on the Halo franchise. Leveling up your character and getting better gear are a lot of fun. Multiplayer is a great experience. Your character is already equipped with a vehicle; you don't have to earn it. Plus, the AI of the aliens are among the best that I've seen in a game.

The bad -- There is minimal storyline. Missions are small (kill x number of these, or pick up x number of those) and feel repetitive and purposeless. Maps are large, but the missions have you running back and forth over the same map, rather than progressing from one end of the map to the other.

The ugly -- Peter Dinklage's frequently-heard voice work is lackluster, and among the worst I've heard in a video game. And overall, the game feels a bit light, as if they were holding back a lot of content for the two expansions that have been announced.

Conclusion -- Like I said, the combat mechanics are excellent. This is a great game for people who are more casual than hardcore. I plan on buying this game at some point, but not at full retail. I'm going to give it six months and pick it up for half price.

I expected so much from Destiny - The adverts, the marketing in general made me feel like I was going to be playing an open world HUGE game with thousands of objectives.
It falls short of that massively, but didn't disappoint completely - which is why I giving it a hefty 7.

    - The game starts with next to no storyline, around 8 hours in (including repetitive side quests) I had no idea what the point in everything was - Cool the darkness is coming, cool im a guardian, so what? What's the point in "the traveller" and the massive orb in the sky that was advertised if nothing really happens there?
    - Gameplay is flawless to be fair, variety of guns + AAA feel to the gunplay, just repetitive shooting though, so it can get a little dull.
    - Music is perfect, brilliant theme + quality action packed big songs.
    - Quests - nothing to do OR repetitive boring gaming, no variety.
    - Monsters - predictable, im fighting the same 4 races of mobs, with the same predictable movements.
    - WHY IS LVL 20 THE SOFT CAP!? Make it lvl 50 with faster lvl ups - then the game wouldn't be completed in a day - DUDE IM LVL 17 AND IM ONLY ON VENUS!?!?!

Now then - lets see what could be added:
    - More open world
    - Varied Quests
    - More understandable storyline w/memorable characters that pop up
    - A MARKET SYSTEM!? HELLO ITS AN "MMO" KIND OF GAME
    - More player choices with levelling up
    - level system per weapon, maybe stats for mining in the open world etc to sell for money
    - more mobs with less predictable movement
    - more weapons to tailor the style of game
    - balance the multiplayer with loadouts so everyone has a fair shot - i get why they did it the way they did, but it's hardly fair guys...

This is a small review, loads missed out - but definitely a 7/10 - been playing for hourssss so I can't fault it for entertainment, here's to hopefulness on Destiny 2

Destiny is an enjoyable game for most fans of FPS games. However, it depends how bland you want it to be.

It gets very repetitive. There is no backstory given to the type of enemies in the game, i.e. - Fallen, Vex etc.

Perhaps the best part about the Co-Op experience would be that the Strike Missions have you battle through wave of enemies and bosses within 45 minutes. This gives you loot at the end of the Strike Mission which is usually pretty valuable.

The "free-roam" aspect of the game can be enjoyable, depending on your tolerance and addiction to getting better loot. You will be wrecking weak enemies on the plains of different planets all to find a single loot box. The loot boxes usually contain Glimmer (the game's currency) and an additional piece of loot which can be a gun, armor or something completely useless. This part of the games also offers "missions" but these are mind-numbingly dull - they require you to kill a certain enemy or pick up certain items for very little reward.

Perhaps the most fun part of the experience would be the Multiplayer (The Crucible). The Crucible offers 5 game modes - some of which I enjoyed (Control, Clash and Rumble), one which was awful (Skirmish 3vs3).

Leveling up is pretty quick, I got to Level 20 within 24 hours. From 20, you have to equip Armor which has Light as a perk to level up. I'm not sure what level you can get to yet, but I haven't hit a cap thus far.

If you enjoyed Borderlands, you'll probably enjoy this game as it requires you to do mind-numbing tasks to get more loot. The Multiplayer is more like Halo: Reach than any other Halo.

To Conclude, it's a fairly enjoyable game. I could see myself playing it further as long as there is a high level cap.

Great game, but the main storyline is disappointingly short. I've completed this after just 4 days - I was expecting a huge amount more. When compared to other games that give 60-100 hrs of gameplay, this just isn't good enough these days. I will continue to play to try more of the PvP content, but I'd much rather have more story and more different environments, and less linear gameplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoy Destiny as a fun shooter with tight mechanics and a decent amount of customization. The vistas as beautiful and getting into tense firefights (solo or with friends) is a lot of fun. Your character, although mostly silent, looks really cool in the well-designed armor and flair pieces (class-specific addons, color schemes, ship skins, etc.). However the story is so thin I think you'd find greater lore and depth in a game of Monopoly. Bungie has a beautiful universe with an interesting premise to craft an intriguing story however they fall flat. One of the first missions of the game you meet The Speaker who directly tells you "I could tell you about the battle against the darkness and the fall of the Traveler..." but then he doesn't! I want to know what happened beyond the simple "go kill some aliens."

No game is perfect and they all have some aspect of repetition. But things like lore, character development, and story help wrap the repitition is a pretty wrapper. Unfortunately Destiny doesn't do this. I am sure I'll be playing Destiny for a while simply because it is fun to blast aliens with friends. But as friends playtime slows down and I'm left solo, I don't know how fun the experience will be.

The other thing I'm worried about is the involvement of Activision and DLC. I can see several places where they will be adding DLC (the Grimoire has a card for Jupiter already) but I feel like it will be a nickel and dime situation...keep shelling out money for incremental advances in story or character development. Time will tell....

    Singleplayer :

The singleplayer is the weakest part of this game. All the missions circle around an idea which is ''Go there then protect your Ghost''. It's always the same thing! You protect your Ghost against endless waves of NPC's... how boring is that when you just killed 20 or 30 of the same mobs. The story is the most uninteresting ever. They will never explain nothing to you.

They will never explain nothing to you. There are some cinematics but they are worthless since they teach nothing of this world. The only good point I will say about the single player is the environment looks great as well as the enemies, they look awesome too. By the way, to being honest, I have never finished the campaign since it was repetitive. I stopped at the 4th world and then decided to go see a walkthrough. It is the same until the end so it saved me alot of wasting time.

    Multiplayer :

The reason why this game received 7/10 on my end. This is the half of the game that saves the day. This thing is good. Even if you feel underpower or you feel there's unbalance everywhere, this game has the ability to make you stay in the matchmaking loop for another round. I always want another game. Sometimes I suck, sometimes I win and it's fun! The only downside are the fact that everyone jumps so high, it's hard to keep up with a regular line of sigh. The classes makes the game hard to believe this is balance. Finally, there's no clear armor sets for PvP which is really hard for me to understand since I always look for a kind of sets or ability for PvP but I see none. You have to get some weapons from PvE to have a set that kick ass.

This game is fun, but lacking. The enemies should drop more similar to diablo and the story could be far more engaging. The worlds are not truly open as I am killed by architects all the time. It is fun and graphics are great but the city itself and the drops from enemies leave me wanting more. The missions are very repetitive as well. Still a fun game, just not worth the hype just yet.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Destiny looks amazing, from it's many vistas to it's stunning level design. But there's only 4 planets to explore, with around 5 campaign missions, 2 strike missions, and a patrol. (repeatable quests) Its levels are extremely linear however, and are truly bare, with nothing to do but shoot and sort of loot, sort of being that there really isnt many good weapons and gear to find. I'm not a fanboy i'm just open and honest, but literally every mission consists of traversing to an area, holding x so your ghost can scan/hack something then fight off a enemy horde, every time. the levels do have the odd gold chest in them, but ever lacking in promise. The story is extremely bland, no prominent lore, characters etc. The game has no multiple endings, optional dialogue, good/evil system, there are only preset colours for armor, little customization. The actual ending is less than 3 minutes long, you get a new shiny weapon (no choice) The game has a really annoying auto assist feature to boot, with no option to turn off, which is a game breaker for me, i'm quite insulted to know that the developers think we as gamers need it. You can at level 20 unlock legendary gear, but you need to acquire hundreds of vanguard marks (through patrols/strikes) and crucible marks (through competitive multiplayer) but by the time you are at level 20, you most likely would of completed the game, and therefore the gear is virtually pointless, because you are left with only the strikes and the crucible, which for me are not worthy enough of spending dozens of hours in acquiring the marks for, and farming the materials/glimmer in order to acquire them. Say i want to go back to earth and do a spot of patrolling (repeatable quests) but it's again pointless, being that i'm level 21 and the patrol missions are all set to a certain difficulty, earth being only level 4, all i'll be rewarded with is low level gear (naturally) the game is ironically restrictive being that you have to sort of do a mission when it matches your level, and oh no you can't jump over this cliff etc because all you'll be rewarded with is a halo-esque fall to you death. However the graphics are stunning, gunplay is smooth and tight, varied enemies, etc, but it just doesn't make a good game, great. plus there are dlc/updates on the way which might remedy some of my concerns, great casual game just mostly flash, little substance. I must admit the game is nothing spectacular, but I think people need to understand this is a new approach Bungie have taken making it a FPS RPG.

A lot of this is due to my previous experience with RPG's so it could seem biased.

    Pros:
    + Loot system. Randomized rewards
+ Environment. It makes you feel immersed and isolated. Mentally, you're on your own.
+ Limited communication. Whereas others hate this, I like it. A game like this doesn't need little kids spamming the mic. It would ruin the isolating feel of the game.
+ Incredibly smart AI. With modifiers, some of the smartest I have seen in a video game.
+ Music. Very melodic and sets a good mixture of moods. I love fight the Archon Priest simply because of the soundtrack during it.
+ Content. What it has to offer brings me in to play just that one more Strike. Then just one more after that lol..
+ Raids. Who would have thought that a console Exclusive goes to the extremities of putting raids? This was also a good addition and very challenging.

    Cons:
    - Repetition. Missions themselves are very similar to eachother. The Strike Playlist can cue you up with the exact same one right after. A lot more of them need to be added.
    - Crucible. Very unbalanced. People seem to run around and 1 shot people too easily. (hunter class especially) that super power needs to be nerfed. (yes I am another complainer about hunter)
    - Unfinished. Bungie seem to like bringing out new content due to feedback. This can be good for more variety, but its disturbing to know that on release, it could of been planned to be a finished game until the mixed feedback came about.
    - Story. Very vague and at times doesn't explain too much of what is happening.

    Mutual:
+- Bosses. Usually bullet sponges and doesn't leave you thinking creative. Yet you will get those moments where they will wreck you, forcing you to start thinking a bit more which makes them more intense and exciting to fight.

Overall it is a decent game, but nothing very memorable. It is evident that they are trying to push a series here, but they will have to pull a wildcard for it to be ground breaking in the future.
If you're a fan of RPG's you will probably like it, but be taking what could be better in mind.
Just dont expect it to be like Halo just because its made by Bungie. The only thing similar to Halo, is that its a shooter. Nothing else.

Bungie is, hands down, one of my top 5 favorite developers in the industry. After all, Bungie makes everyone of their games with such care and consideration to every aspect. Halo is also my favorite video game franchise ever. So of course, I immediately jumped on the hype train for Destiny the day it was announced, even though I'm personally not a fan of what it does to certain games. TheBungie is, hands down, one of my top 5 favorite developers in the industry. After all, Bungie makes everyone of their games with such care and consideration to every aspect. Halo is also my favorite video game franchise ever. So of course, I immediately jumped on the hype train for Destiny the day it was announced, even though I'm personally not a fan of what it does to certain games. The big, big, BIG question is (quite possibly the biggest question of the year in gaming): Does Destiny live up to the quality of Halo and can it also be the best game Bungie will ever create? To be honest, I absolutely adored Destiny the first week and a half. However, the more you think about the game and get deeper into it, you start to realise how many glaring flaws there are that put nasty dents on the experience. Don't get me wrong, though, there's a lot of damn good stuff here. But it won't last for long. Let's start with the good. Destiny gets the fundamental gameplay or shooting done perfectly. With the ability to double jump or glide and slide, the combat gains a new aspect of versatility, different from your other shooters. The game also has 2 abilities for each class that were cool and creative. I felt the core shooting felt a lot like Halo, which was amazing. Plus, when in combat areas, the game gives you enough room or cover to feel safe, but not too much to make you feel like you're stuck in a metal cube. Another stunning facet of Destiny is its graphics. Remember the jaw-dropping feeling you had playing Halo 1 and stepping out of the landing ship in the second mission to see the Halo ring in the sky and everything around you? When playing Destiny and just looking at the world around you, that same feeling comes up. The graphics are just so amazing. Destiny also uses loot systems with gear and weapons. While the loot system has some fundamental flaws (more on that later), it was a good gear game, and I always pushed myself to get better gear and weapons (EARLY ON). I also enjoyed the PvP a lot here and there. That's all the good. Now...THE BAD. Destiny takes inspirations from games like Borderlands or Diablo for its loot system, and it's not nearly as good here. Drop rates are very rare up until level 12 or 13, and the loot rewards you get for every mission complete are irritatingly random. On the subject of class diversity, I only played as the Hunter, and I had moderate fun with his abilities. The story of this game....WOW. Wait, did I say "story"? There's barely any at all! In the "story" missions I never felt as if there was a genuinely good reason of why I had to do this-and-that because most of the time, there wasn't any reason at all. There's only like 5 (maybe even less) cutscenes in the game, and when they do come around, they felt awkward and worthless. Halo is story-driven, and I get that Destiny is NOT Halo, but its pathetic that we would get this much storyline from Bungie. In terms of the mission structure, I kinda felt repetitive. I did say that I liked the PvP, but it can be unbalanced. Maybe about 40% of the time, I died from Super Charge abilities. CHEAP. The guns, though, for the most part, are balanced. Bungie has made comments saying the game "changes" after level 20. I got to level 22 before I stopped playing. You know why? The game becomes a complete, boring drag after level 20. To level up after that level, you must get gear with "light" on it. To do this, you'll find yourself in a constant grind for the good gear. When grinding, you'll be repeating missions a lot. The game just proves itself to be boring after that point. The game sprinkles in MMO aspects, but sadly, they don't go deep enough. I don't want you guys to think I dislike Destiny 'cause I sure as hell don't. However, the flaws take away big parts of the experience. You'll play the game for about 20 hours, and then you're just done. Simple as that. Buy the game at $45 or less. Expand

I haven't yet explored the entirety of this title but as a separate entity its not a shooter that should be passed up. It offers a lot of solid gameplay time and adequate gun battles. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game at first glance is quite good but it shows it's flaws eventually. The game drops you off right where the beta started and goes all the way up to where the beta ended. That's right, the missions in the beta are the first missions that can be done in game.

The servers seem to be incapable of doing their job as many players, including me, have had "network problems" which wouldn't be bad as it *sometimes* loads you back into the mission near to location you lost connection. However, 90% of the time you'll end up restarting the mission.

    The story:
The story is nothing to write home about, while there's a very small plot within the story it's just that, very small. Almost non existent. The missions generally consist of get to this location, deploy the ghost and protect the ghost, which can't be killed as far as I'm aware. Judging by the small amount of locations and the small amount of missions per location the story doesn't seem to be a long one. If you just want to play Destiny for the story then I'd recommend renting it as the short story is a clear indication of a focus on the crucible (The generic FPS multiplayer mode)

    Character customisation:
The character customisation isn't half bad. Again, it's nothing to write home about but you rarely see your characters face, which is what the main customisation is about, so it's not really a huge problem.

    Multiplayer (crucible):
As mentioned above the multiplayer mode is just your generic multiplayer that you'll find on other shooters like Call of Duty. The only difference being, you'll be rewarded with exclusive content (in other words content that can only be obtained through the crucible).

    Overall:
Overall, it isn't a bad game but it isn't something to get excited about. Developers like Bungie need to learn that hype is the most effective way to kill a game at launch.

bungee has signed a 10 year contract for expansion packs. the main game is very very repetitive and all the missions feel similar to the one you did before
THERE is no story and the game is incomplete and not =very exiting
    you don't understand anything
all it is is £50 for an unfinished game and expansions for 30 each Terrible AI, boring fetch quests and the same guns we have seen a thousand times in various shooters. Sure the environments are beautiful. Conceptually and visually Destiny is a stunning effort at originality.
but the game is bad but its

FUN multiplayer Is fun with friends better with more than alone

The AI is pretty intelligent ex: taking cover and trying to flank you not just standing and waiting to get shot. I have yet to play with someone as it feels more like everyone is doing there own thing rather then this massive multi player interactive game. The crucible where you play against other players is not that fun at all especially if you are starting out as you will get killed all the time from higher lvl players. The leveling is pretty cool and basic. Overall it is pretty fun to play with some of the best elements from halo and COD, but not some crazy unique experience they seemed to be promising. If you played HALO or COD you def have a feel for the game. If they greatly increased the look and feel of every individual mission on the planet it could have been a big winner. Expand

This is a great addition to the Borderlands franchise. I was a bit nervous when Gearbox gave the reigns to Bungie, but I think they made a fantastic Borderlands game. Go get Borderlands: Destiny edition!

There have been moments for me so far that say, yes, this game has potential. Getting caught up in a spontaneous system wide event (while on a mission) was a nice touch. Having to take down a Nomad with the help of others in the same area was a distraction in the good sense of the word. At another point in the game, I was in a tough fight and someone came along just at the right time and spent all of a minute helping me knock down the rest of the badies. Once over we both went on our merry way and not once did we have to communicate. So I get what Bungie wants to do with this game. I even get the "shared-world" shooter. A balance between co-op and competitive multiplayer that is always on.

It's a good game. It's well designed mechanically. However, it is way over hyped at this point. While there is plenty new, it's new in the sense that you mix elements of what has come before to get a new sum. It's not revolutionary. The back story takes a backseat to the action. I have a hard time understanding why I am doing things. The dialogue is ... weak, both in tone and content. I didn't expect an RPG style story that is 50% of the game. But even Halo had a sense of urgency to the story. Everything seems forced in Destiny.

As I mentioned, this game has many elements. It can be compared to a lot of games, SWTOR, Borderlands, Halo, and even Eve:Online come to mind. The last one because of what I think can make or break this game: community driven content. Without Bungie doing a complete overhaul over the next year - the only thing that I can see taking this game to the next level and keeping it afloat is how the community comes together. Unlike EVE: Online though, there are walls in this world. Matchmaking, whether co-op or multiplayer is done on the fly and automated. It will be interesting to see how much the community can drive this game in its current state.

For now I will keep playing. I've really been on the edge of my seat more than once. That alone is worth the price of admission. It's not a game that I feel personally vested in yet though. Time will tell.

Firstly i will discuss the negative. Multiplayer pvp. 6 vs 6 is not acceptable by today's standards for an online shooter. I also find the pvp experience not to be balanced and is frustrating. Maps never feel right. They feel too big or too small at times. I would not recommend this game a buy if you were looking for a core multiplayer experience. The Patrol mode is repetitive as said in other reviews. This is basically your explore mode as well. There are only a few patrol missions it seems and does get boring quickly for most I would think. I personally only do them when there is a bounty for it as I do enjoy the bounty missions. This also will yield you bonus vanguard experience. Exploring just feels bland as well. I find very little in the way of chests, dead ghosts, or enemies which is really the entire reason to go exploring in the first place. Those are really the only things that I feel Bungie just fell short on.

That being said, they got a lot right. The enemy variety is as good or better than any other shooter I can think of despite the other reviews. COD has more variety? Titianfall? Even Halo? I don't think so. There is plenty of variety as well as a variety of ways you can take them down. The world is large and gorgeous. I have spent more time looking around to take in the environment than any other game bar none. It is beautiful. Missions are solid despite the haters reviews. The biggest complaint is "go here and shoot this guy repeat" or "go here and push this button repeat". Is my memory failing me or is pretty much every shooter ever made a similar formula? The excitement is not the goal but the journey to the goal. To share the world with others even when traveling alone is great. It is fun to storm a base with fellow travelers. Public events is a great time and a wonderful way to meet new friends even if you were planning to go solo. Just something bonding about the experience. Can't put my finger on it. I typically am not a big social gamer but I have found myself grouping with more folks in this game than any other and loving it. Bounty boards are a fun. Some of the bounties take you deeper into the world than the patrols it seems and they vary much more. Lots of gear to level. I am only a lvl 18 warlock atm but have heard the leveling does NOT stop at 20 which is great.

In a nutshell this game is a 5/10 for multi and a 9/10 for single player / coop. This is why I gave it a 7 overall. I personally bought it for the SP so I am loving the hell out of it. It is a dangerous game to promote a game as hard as Bungie has with this title and not expect volatile reactions from the public but this is far from a bad game. Unless as I said before, you were only buying for the multiplayer. I hope this review helps a bit with you gamers on the fence one way or the other.

I'm so addicted that my girlfriend is at breaking point, but like a typical bungie effort I feel it's going to come to an end real soon. Why do the make such a big deal about a game when you know that the hard core gamers you are trying to attract are going to clock it in 3 days. I thought this was going to take forever like skyrim or boarderlands, I spose I thought wrong

Let's all be honest, Destiny is neither a zero nor a perfect 10. With GTA 3, Mario 64, or Uncharted 2 (in their day of course) being 10's and ET for Atari 2600, Leisure Suit Larry, and Fighter Within being zeroes, Destiny is a solid 7 overall, maybe an 8 if you ever heard "Leroy Jenkins!" in your headset.

Activision spent a half-Billion on this, so clearly there's plenty of polish.

Activision spent a half-Billion on this, so clearly there's plenty of polish. Undeniably it has excellent control mechanics, smooth gameplay, powerful visuals, and Peter Dinklage, so it's certainly better than average.

But a 10? Come on people, spit out the Kool-Aid. I actually enjoyed Titanfall, so clearly I don't need a story to enjoy a game. But this was not only Bungie, it was Bungie unshackled from Micro$oft for Traveler's sake! Every gamer with a triple-digit IQ was expecting a magnum opus, an epic as powerful as Star Wars to a 7-year-old in 1977 that still goes to Comic-Con dressed as Boba Fett. Instead we got Phantom Menace. WTF Bungie!? You broke hearts. That's where all those zero ratings are coming from.

Destiny is a multi-platform release without significant exclusives...So those zeroes aren't fanboy trolls; they're tears falling on keyboards imagining what Bungie should have and could have done with the gross national product of a small country.

Again I don't require a story to enjoy a game. But if you're going to include a story, hire an award-winning actor, advertise becoming a "legend" in primetime...did I mention spending $500 Billion with B...for the love of all that's holy add a plot with a twist or two, sprinkle in some character development, write some clever dialogue, put some emotional weight on in-game decisions. Instead Destiny's storyline has the gravitas of a Disney channel Halloween movie! The "Darkness"? Really?

Every game publisher needs to take a clue from Far Cry 3 or Uncharted; grab the audience in the beginning. Make us care about the character we control and understand his motivation. I don't have a problem with the vague "you've been dead for hundreds of years" intro, but within in minutes you're fully armed, grinding through bad guys with ease as extremely atmospheric music tries to make your heart pound. Far Cry 3 & the last Tomb Raider did a wonderful job of making you feel so vulnerable in the beginning and paced the power-ups very naturally and satisfyingly. Destiny makes it very clear early on that you have a LOT of grinding to do, and for no other reason than higher level bad guys merely have too many HP for your lowly weapons.

I so wanted to like Destiny and was hoping the emotionless start was just because your character (what's his/her name BTW?) just woke up and didn't know who he was or how to begin his hero's quest. I figured maybe the story would become compelling at the Tower. Meanwhile about an hour into the game, the "Speaker" or some such tells you the world is about to end but hey, you're level 2, have scrap gear, and just woke up from being dead a few hundred years, so why don't you give it a shot and maybe you can save the multiverse from the DARKNESS ooooooo. Squa?

That moment when your guy (what's his name and why do I care) looks over at his "Ghost" is perhaps the lamest cutscene since Final Fantasy X: Tidus Learns to Laugh. It's positively cringe-worthy. It reminded me of when I was embarrassed to admit I still enjoyed video games because they were clearly meant for children.

It was this moment when I realized Destiny is simply not a AAA title in spite of its AAA+ budget and in spite of Bungie. There were immediate clues. Right out of the gate realizing that race and gender meant absolutely zip was a disappointment. Wouldn't it be perfect if the robot made the ideal Titan, the alien best suited to Warlock, and of course a Human Hunter? And meanwhile mixed race/classes would add both challenges & some strategic advantages. That would instantly make the game deeper and more interesting.

Speaking of merely cosmetic differences...so you mean to tell mean that even though you & your flying Rubik's Cube discover and revive a friggin' SPACESHIP bristling with guns and you can buy all sorts of new high-dollar spaceships at the Tower and there's a blond space-mechanic that perpetually sits seductively on a space chest and fixes your spaceship for free every time you dock...and this spaceship is nothing more than a LOADING SCREEN PICTURE??? Are. You. Kidding. Me?

Bungie Bungie Bungie. You had us in the palm of your hands. You teased us with a game that could have done for gaming, what Star Wars did for motion pictures. So much potential. I hope you take those zeroes seriously. I think it's funny how slow the professional review sites are to publish. They see all the glaring flaws but have editors who could be sniffing that river of cash flowing out of a $500,000,000 budget. I fully expect them to shill 9's & 9.5's but we mature gamers should have higher standards and keep publishers honest. Last of Us is a 9, 9.5; Destiny is a 7.

STORY: The story has some cool moments, but they never reach anything that will leave you awestruck. The story is told almost exclusively via your Ghost, who explains the objective and motive of a mission as you're traveling to it. The story never feels like it's really going anywhere, and the resolution is disappointing and confusing at best (and let's not forget 'clichéd'). The lore or backstory in the game's universe is astounding, however. Listening to your Ghost explain past events and information on different alien races is a real treat, and it definitely shows that Bungie put a lot of heart and soul into this game.
MISSION STRUCTURE: It's true, the missions are incredibly linear, uninteresting, and almost identical to each other. Go to X, Go to Y, hold off the enemies while your Ghost takes forever to do something, kill a mini-boss, return to ship, repeat. That pretty much sums up every single mission in the game with the exception of maybe one or two.
LEVEL CAP: It's basically 20. I know people argue that you can level past 20, but it isn't really 'leveling'. Basically, once you reach level 20 (which doesn't take long), you cease earning experience entirely. Instead, you'll be rewarded with an item called a 'Mote of Light' periodically, which can be used to purchase legendary equipment. This, however, takes forever, as it can take over an hour to get one of these items and you need 25 of them per piece of equipment. Furthermore, your character's level can only go above 20 if you're wearing special equipment that raises your 'Light' level. Basically -- you don't level up, you just equip armor that raises your stats (such equipment is also very rare, mind you).
CONTENT: Just the fact that so many people have already completed the game and have reached level 20 should say all you need to know here. There are only 4 locations to explore throughout the entire game. That's right, only 4 planets, each with only 1 unique area to explore (though these areas are broken up into different regions, they're still small and linear feeling). Every mission on Earth happens in the same area, every mission on the Moon is in the same area, etcetera. Also, there are only a few Strike (Boss) missions. While these are quite rewarding when it comes to loot and leveling, having only 5 or 6 of these to play through means you'll be repeating missions far too many times. The game play is absolutely fantastic, though, and the mechanics can really make this game addicting to the point that you might not totally mind redoing missions you've played a dozen times.

Destiny is a beautiful, fast paced, action-packed adventure; but it lacks character and suffers for it. The game content is bare-bones, and it feels like the story was haphazardly slapped together. You'll enjoy this game if you enjoy FPS games or MMO games, or if you just enjoy shooting-and-looting Borderlands style. However, if you're expecting an amazing story driven campaign, you'll find yourself in complete shock when you complete the game in just over 6 hours of play time. Bungie certainly poured the heart into this game, but it's clear that they might have poured it into the wrong areas, leaving the story and content a barren wasteland that's bound to dry up soon.

I don't understand how these other reviews seem to be either a perfect 10 or a total 0. Those aren't helpful reviews.

Instead, what I feel like they accomplished is to create a safe and sound foundation for the future. The building blocks are in place and they have a lot of room to improve and grow upon.

Maybe they should have omitted some aspects of the game to focus more on the lore and reinforcing it's core because while people actually get a fair amount of game here.. somehow people feel cheated in a way. I've played lesser games and heard far less criticisms about them so the hype train clearly messed with a lot of people. This game is just spread out a bit different than a lot of games.

I love the lighting and graphics, the music, the weapons and their tongue in cheek descriptions but the story is so lacking and so are many of the details that game enthusiasts crave. After everything, we still don't know jack about the damn traveler and it's on the box. Weird. I also find it weird that at this very moment, my character's armor looks so close to being a spartan, it's ridiculous. He's shiney green and everything. He's a guardian.. and meanwhile halo 5 is named: Halo 5 guardians. They are totally connected, how can they not be? Big dead sphere... Didact.. etc... Thinking of this game in that universe does make me like it more lol

The bottom line.. I'm not hooked on the story or my character. I almost am... almost.. I feel like there should have been a revelation to tie it all together better but I am still confident that Bungie will build this franchise into something special in the future.

Destiny feels like the key elements of an FPS and an MMO gently resting shoulder to shoulder, instead of being fused together in a truly creative way. It plays and looks great, and offers many, many hours of entertainment to anyone okay with repeating the same tasks, but it isn’t exactly the game-changing science fiction epic we felt it was aspiring to.
