Criticized for its repetition and lack of narrative, it was considered to be a disappointment. But after a stream of constant updates, the game greatly improved. With the release of The Taken King a year later, it finally began to fulfill its promise. This edition includes the main game and three expansions. It's a good collection although it does not include 2016's The Rise of Iron.

A combination of Halo, World of Warcraft and Mass Effect, this first-person shooter can be addictive. Although it does not surpass Halo, it's a solid effort that rewards players with plenty of loot. While the narrative is weak (pre -Taken King), the gameplay and presentation are quite superb. The campaign features a "Choose Your Own Path" structure, while competitive matches play out like a sci-fi Call of Duty. Ultimately, it is the excellent Strike and Raid missions that distinguish Destiny from other similar shooters.

Taken as a whole package, the game is good, but not great. There is plenty of room for improvement mainly due to the lack of a narrative. The sequel needs to include a real story with fleshed out characters to involve the player. Without a proper story mode, this installment feels like it is missing a major component. Nevertheless, it is a stellar FPS that fans of Bungie and action-based RPGs should enjoy. Despite its faults, I'd rank the Legendary Edition with an 8.3 out of 10.

The RNG loot system has been dumbed down, so you get good loot as a reward for your hard work, not because you got lucky! The new missions are way more fun and interesting, with inventive boss battles, compelling cut-scenes, and a final boss that towers in scale and difficulty. The only problem is that you have to buy DLC for what you should have gotten the first time round. F@# you Activision! Full Review »

It handles well, it looks great, and feels great. There are so many beautiful graphical flares to distract you until you realize how hard it is to aim with so many flashes and bursts on the screen. In all, it's like a beautiful cake, it's great when you're consuming a single slice, but gets gross when you try to eat any more.

The missions are uninspired, with virtually every single mission comprising a series of "press X button to activate the computer, defend area while computer works, move to the next computer." It's an endless stream of linear room-defenses. I can't help but compare it to Mass Effect where the missions felt unique and challenging, with great voice-acting and plot in every sequence. All of that is missing from Destiny. Peter Dinklage is the only voice you hear, and there's only so much dynamism he can add to the game.

The MMO elements leave you scratching your head, since there's not really all that much of a shared experience beyond your own 1-3 man fireteam. And since you're instancing into any PvP and most co-op worlds, it's not clear why Destiny needed to be an MMORPG rather than just a MORPG.

Usually when a game has only three classes, you expect them to play very differently, but in Destiny the classes are almost indistinguishable in gameplay. A different grenade type, a slightly different jump style, and a different flashy (but ultimately indifferent) heroic ability, make very little difference to how you execute in combat. I initially picked the hunter class, which is cast as a loner/sniper type of character, but as with so many MMORPGs, long-range combat just doesn't seem to work and most engagements take place at close range. I also tried the Warlock (mage) class, and that felt almost exactly the same. The weaponry is shared across all classes as far as I can tell, and your abilities make only superficial differences. As far as gameplay is concerned, it's just one coat of paint away from Halo.

Destiny feels like it really yearns to be written into a great sci-fi novel or movie script. It feels almost tailor made for exceptional machinima work. I've played maybe 6 hours, I keep thinking about playing more, but every time I sit down in front of my tv, I'd rather just watch Netflix.
