For all its knocks and criticisms, I had fun playing Deep Ones. The relatively short length means the game doesn’t overstay its welcome and for the price of a pint in the city centre, you could do far worse. It’s a rough and ready release in need of an update or two, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Deep Ones is dull, uninteresting, annoying and poorly designed. Make no mistake about it, this is a game that will test your patience much more than it will your skill. The price tag may well be generous, but even then you’re practically paying to be constantly frustrated.

Unfortunately the Deep Ones doesn’t do that and all it ends up delivering to you is boring and frustrating moments and that doesn’t change throughout your time with the game. There are just too many problems for you to enjoy this game and this is evident from the get go. As soon as you start you will notice that the controls are very awkward and the slow movement of your character isn’t helped by the unresponsiveness of the controls. The control problems also filter through to the combat elements that have been implemented in the game and the simple task of firing a gun frustrates you a great deal because everything just feels slow and tedious. If this isn’t bad enough the game’s difficulty curve makes things even worse. You will die multiple times and you just get the impression that the gameplay is unfair and this will no doubt put a lot of people off. Thankfully there is a bright spot in the gameplay and that comes in the form of the boss battles. These battles are actually pretty fun and I wish they would’ve taken this approach with the rest of the gameplay because the boss battles are the only thing in the game that has any sort of variety. The lack of variety is a major problem in my opinion because it combines with the game’s problems and this in turn makes carrying on a real chore. Whilst the price of the game is not excessive you will find that the game doesn’t have much content and that’s probably a good thing because the content that is included is very boring to say the least. Without a doubt my favourite thing about Deep Ones is the presentation side of the game. They have done a very good job of capturing the retro feel in both the visuals and sound design, and it’s a shame that they haven’t got much more right because this aspect of the game is really good. All in all to say that the Deep Ones is a very unforgettable experience would be a massive understatement and unfortunately I found it really difficult to find any positives with the game. I was disappointed with the game from start to finish which is a shame because I try and like every game but I couldn’t do that with the Deep Ones and in the end I recommend that you steer clear of this game at all costs even if you’re a massive fan of the retro games.
