The Dark Souls series has a huge following and it’s easy to see why. This is a series that provides you with challenging and adrenaline-fuelled action from start to finish and the great sense of achievement you get when defeating an enemy is second to none. As you can imagine back in 2011 when the first Dark Souls game came out it was a game that hooked many and I was one of them many, so when I learnt that the first Dark Souls was being remastered I was excited to say the least. Thankfully they’ve done the first Dark Souls justice with this remaster and it was a pleasure to embark on the fantastic journey all over again. Without a doubt this is the best version of the game and you can see improvements throughout your time with the game, so if you’ve never played a Dark Souls game before then you’re in for a treat. Combat is obviously a major aspect in this series and thankfully it feels better than ever. In my opinion everything feels more fluid when in combat this time around and even though you will experience some frustrating moments from time to time putting the game down is very difficult thanks to its addictive gameplay. If you like lots of varied content then you will absolutely love what this game has to offer and with the added DLC that means you won’t be getting bored anytime soon. You will however notice that the content does have a few bugs and technichal issues contained in it, but thankfully whilst these issues can be annoying none of them are game-breaking so they’re not too problematic. There is however no issues when it comes to the new and improved multiplayer offerings. The multiplayer aspect in the game has seen quite an overhaul and to say I had fun when playing the game in this way would be a massive understatement. Unfortunately though the improved multiplayer is the only new thing really and even though I was more than satisfied playing the same and improved game again it still would’ve been nice to have seen a couple of new features included. I’ve always been a big fan of the Dark Souls presentation style and it was nice to see some improvements included here. Visually the game definitely looks better and in a way the improved visuals make you become even more attached to the gameplay. The same can also be said about the improved sound design because it makes the game even more of an immersive experience. At the end of the day as far as remasters go Dark Souls Remastered is a very good addition to the remastered formula and I really enjoyed experiencing this masterpiece again. They’ve managed to improve the game in a number of areas and even if you’ve played the game before I fully recommend that both newcomers and veterans of the series should purchase Dark Souls Remastered immediately because in my opinion you won’t regret it. Bugs aside, DS:Remastered is a phenomenal game that should be everyone's starting point for the franchise - if you've played 2 or 3 or BB then you'll likely find parts of the game frustrating and not nearly as polished as the later games in the series but it's still an immense role-playing experience that I'd recommend to anyone

One of the most enjoyable games of this generation (and the last). Challenging, but always fair. The world of Dark Souls is immersive, and the level design is incredibly well thought out.

I made a Metacritic account JUST to review this insult to the SoulsBorne series. Most of the critics are probably reviewing this game on the surface level and probably haven't made it to NG+. Let's start off with the good about this game as this review unfolds. Dark Souls: Remastered does not offer the graphical overhaul we as consumers would expect in 2018. Instead, there a few detail and lighting tweaks that make the game look a little bit better but it's not tremendously noticeable. Next up, added "patches". Some of the covenants now work properly and you can change your covenant right at a bonfire which is a helpful feature that was added. On top of that, by far the best good thing about this game is the reignition of the entire community. That is just about the only apsect that makes the game worth it's unappealing pricetag for a remaster. If you are either a returning veteran or someone who never got to experience the 2011 entry in it's full glory, then now is the time to pick this game up. That is, if you're willing to wait for a sale on the remaster. Another positive is: Blighttown is no longer an absolute disaster to traverse now that console has a solid 60fps. This was huge to me personally because Blighttown was absolutely dreadful on the original 2011 entry. Moving onto the negatives, I won't completely bash this game but I will be honest. After getting to NG+ (New Game +), I have never felt so disappointed in a remaster. Especially from a developer that I KNOW can do soooo much better than this lazy attempt at a cash grab. It's honestly saddening as a SoulsBorne veteran. This isn't the big "everything is fixed" patch that we were all hoping for. It's pretty much just a rerelease of the original 2011 Dark Souls. Many of the bugs such as ragdoll bodies that stick to the player model are still present. Chain backstabbing is still present, PvP has not been touched whatsoever, and the game is still riddled with it's initial janky feeling (especially in close quarters). The bugs are still largely in effect, anywhere from enemies dying and getting up to die again to getting backstabbed from the front (not parried). The remaster claims it has "dedicated serves" but you will still run into people online that seem like they have the weakest internet you could buy or live on the otherside of the planet. The biggest fix to online multiplayer that is a huge step for this game is that the player pool doesn't slowly build up anymore to a max of about 20 different people. But instead, the game offers many more people to play with or against. The player count has also been raised to 6. Finally, if you had played the original 2011 Dark Souls then you remember it's janky feeling. Anywhere from framerate drops, to the game feeling sluggish, to hitting your weapon on EVERY WALL IN THE GAME. These issues are still very much present in Dark Souls: Remastered. My advice to anyone looking to purchase this game is to wait for a sale. Otherwise, if you're like me and wanted to experience the original Dark Souls then this game is perfect for you. All in all, its comparable to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered on the same level that it is not a full remaster but more so a quick cash grab at your nostalgia for said game. Expand

As well, DS is a game undeniably tied to the graphical quality as far as player success goes. Environmental observation is absolutely crucial in this game and combined with lag or mechanical issues will contribute to failure.

I debated whether to buy it for the obvious reasons but I wouldve been a fool if i hadnt as I played it years ago (no dlc version), got it on sale and this version makes it a brand new game.

As for the game itself, Ive done a previous review but ill add that its a Genre-creating Masterpiece. A game without dimwitted handholding and idiot “accessibility.”

A unique game of the ages.

Buying this version is a no-brainer for the wise.

Let me start off by saying that this is not a remake, and I know that a lot of people were angry about that. If you go into this game expecting it to be drastically different from the original version, then you might be disappointed. In a nut shell, it is a better running version of the original with some improvements to the inventory system and pvp.

If you go into this game expecting it to be drastically different from the original version, then you might be disappointed. In a nut shell, it is a better running version of the original with some improvements to the inventory system and pvp.
While it may look the same as before initially, there are some noticeable graphical improvements. For example, the magic in this game is a night and day difference from before. Before, magic attacks would look like a colored mist, but now it looks like it has quality to it. Of course the biggest difference for people coming from the 360/PS3 versions is going to be the lack in frame rate drop in areas such as Blighttown. Another smaller change is to the usage of items in your inventory. Whereas before you had to use humanity or captured souls one at a time, now you can use as many as you want all at once, saving you time.
I can't comment too heavily on the pvp since I'm more of a single player kind of person and I only got invaded a few times. I can comment that pvp still seems to not run 100% perfectly like it should in a remaster, although you can now have 3v3 combat which is cool.
This is still Dark Souls, meaning it is one of the best games ever made. Whether or not people feel that these changes justify $40 is a choice they will have to make. To me, the frame rate upgrades were enough to justify the purchase, and having just finished the game, I have no regrets. If this is going to be your first attempt at a Soulsborne game, I highly recommend this version on consoles, especially since it comes with the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dark Souls Remastered

I finished the Action RPG Dark Souls in 44 hours and reached level 92 and 435 gamerscore. I had a lot of fun with the game, but it's more action than RPG.

    story

I got into the world very interested. The whole game starts with a good intro, unfortunately I have to admit that I couldn't really summarize the story adequately, because you don't really get anything explained (here you could have regulated more with smaller cutscenes). The story snippets that you then have to put together are mainly found in the descriptions of items, etc.

In my opinion, that's a bit of a shame, because the world building works really well and a more understandable story would have been really great. So all in all, I basically went my own way and the World Building still managed to make me feel like I was in my own story, in my own adventure.

    Gameplay

The heart of the review and also of the game. Dark Souls thrives on its action gameplay. It lives from the fact that the player learns more and more during the game and thus not only the character goes through a development, but also you yourself. Basically, it is relatively simple: Find the way to the next boss, survive this way and crush the boss .

Let's stay with the bosses for a moment, who for the most part are grandiose and are a lot of fun in their fights. But I have to admit that I imagined a higher level of difficulty. At least the main game is very simple for the most part (two-handed game rules). That's why the DLC surprised me so much. Here I had the feeling for the first time that you get really crisp boss fights (I found the final boss of the DLC difficult). So I didn't have a lot of trial and error attempts with the bosses. I still felt how nervous you can get with a single player game and how excited you are at the end of a boss fight (I only know that from earlier, after the DLC final boss the hands were shaking "a bit").

Another highlight for me are the backtracking aspects of the game. You are happy about every single abbreviation and repeatedly unlock new features or become stronger, only to return to old areas. The urge to explore is visibly rewarded and you are always motivated and driven further. The only thing I have to criticize at this point is that I missed more spectacular places (I know it is intentional, but I just didn't like to wander around for a long time) that serve as orientation. On the other hand, it was very helpful to think more closely about the structure of the world and to recognize that the fire band shrine is basically a node for everything. If you get this insight, which is also part of your own development while playing, it is still not perfect, but it makes it much more pleasant. In exactly the same way I even started to write down individual parts of areas that I still had in front of me and to dissect the individual areas according to the principle of exclusion.

The areas are varied and interesting enough filled with all sorts (as just described). You have to change your equipment in the different areas and react to the environment. Overall, I liked most of the areas (I only found this lava area to be very carelessly clapped).

For me, a much stronger point of criticism is the inventory and forging. For me, the game with weapons, for example. there was actually no reason to test other weapons, it would have been too stupid for me with the forging process and all the crafting, I basically didn't like that at all. That's why I simply upgraded my two-handed sword, which I found "relatively" at the beginning, to +15 and used the entire game. The forging is very confusing, not really transparent and there is also a not that cool inventory (I didn't use the bottomless box and didn't know). So my inventory was full of stuff and I would have wished so much that you could put on different armor sets. Because when it comes to armaments, I had to change from time to time, also because of individual areas, or to have different roles.

Still, Dark Souls has excellent gameplay.

    Graphics / presentation

The remastered version doesn’t pull up trees anymore, of course, but its look is perfectly fine. It creates a very specific atmosphere and especially the first look at Anor Londo is phenomenal. The areas already mentioned are sufficiently different and I didn't have any real bugs or glitches. The game ran smoothly. Highlights for me were in particular: Anor Londo, the DLC and the painting.

    Conclusion

Dark Souls was a lot of fun and I am already looking forward to the other parts, I was also told that the games increase significantly in difficulty (similar to the DLC). I'm looking forward to the rest of the franchise, Dark Souls Remastered gets 8/10 beacons from me.

Oh Dark souls. A shop employee told me it was like Skyrim on steroids and I wouldn't enjoy it. The gauntlet was thrown down that day. (2011) Still one of my top games all these years later.

It was elected the best game of all time for a reason. The best gameplay that you can find is right here. And thank god the fps is fixed.

I love Lordran gg from soft. You are genius. The map is one of the biggest architecture experience in the video game history

Masterpiece in game design and world building, now with all performance issues fixed to a solid 60fps.

think it's a very good game, identical to the dark souls of 2011. There are some bugs that are currently still active, such as duplication of souls, passing areas, etc. The game currently 2022 is good only those minimal details that if they were fixed it would be better.

Great game, good story, meh graphics and controls but that's to be expected with a game this old. Recommended, but it's challenging.

    Good:
    -Story
    -Music
    -Atmosphere
    -Game play
    -Level design
    -World design
    -Customization
    -Boss fights
    -Enemy design
    -Enemy placement

    Bad:
-There are weaker parts in the game in a sense of level enemy and boss design but its manageable and u can push through in and hour and a half
    -The difficulty is easy

A pretty lukewarm remaster of an extremely good game. It is honestly more of a port as almost nothing was fixed and they introduced even more bugs.

Definitely up there as one of the best games I have ever played. The combat is great with many ways to play as there are so many different weapons, spells and items to use. The level design is one of the best I have ever seen especially because the open world is so interconnected. The locations/areas all feel distinct with mostly well-designed enemies. The bosses are great but some can beDefinitely up there as one of the best games I have ever played. The bosses are great but some can be pretty annoying such as the bed of chaos- that whole area is quite annoying. My favourite area has to be Anor Londo and my my favourite is the final dlc boss- Manus father of the abyss or Artorias- both amazing bosses that are very challenging. Expand

Second most overatted game I've ever played only behind rdr2, so far the only from software games to actually live up to the hype are DS3 and Elden Ring.

Exacting and exhilarating, this slightly fugly remaster remains a challenging classic. [Aug 2018, p.76]

Dark Souls Remastered is exactly what the name implies and fans will adore it. I still suck royally at these games. I still want an easy mode so I can manage to get through them without frustration, but the game that spawned a genre is still finely crafted. The jump in framerate and added DLC make this the package to own. For new and old players this is the version to own.

Virtually every facet of this remastering enhances the experience of the original game, especially the performance. Despite this, it has some negative points.
