Cybarian: The Time Travelling Warrior’s retro presentation was nostalgic for me as you know I have a soft spot for retro design. Cybarian: The Time Travelling Warrior reminded me immediately of the retro-filled games of my childhood and the presentation was easy on my eyes. Unfortunately the game suffers from some technical issues and is too short for my liking, however due to the low price of admission you must realize there’s still value here for achievement hunters and retro fans. There’s some challenge on occasion although the game can be finished in a matter of a couple hours for the average experienced gamer. If you suffer a cheap death the checkpoints are essential for avoiding frustration of repeating levels from the beginning. Technically the game delivers as the controls were spot on. The combat takes a little of getting accustom to but it won’t be long before you will find yourself settling in. Learning the combos is important because you’ll find yourself dying quickly if you don’t get these right which can be frustrating for someone approaching Cybarian: The Time Travelling Warrior as a traditional hack and slash. Cybarian: The Time Travelling Warrior reminds me of Rastan from the arcade ERA and it wasn’t perfect either but I did find enjoyment in what was present there and pumped a lot of quarters into it, and value here especially with Rataliaka Games pricing structure. If you like retro filled moments of your past and remember the times of frustration and still look to overcome a games shortcomings it may just earn yourself 1000 gamer score and a little bit of fun in the process. Cybarian: The Time Travelling Warrior on Xbox One is let down by a limited combat system and the knock-on effect that has on enemies. The short run time also means the game never gets going and there is no element of replay value to speak of.

I’ll commend the game for being faithful to the era that it attempts to adopt, but outside of a few decent boss encounters and some serviceable visual and audio design, Cybarian gets a lot more wrong than it gets right. The combat is far too bland, the game is littered with cheap deaths, and above all else, it’s chock-full of irritating design choices that make for an overly frustrating, somewhat boring trek. Less is not always more, as evident here.
